Grinders
In Nick Rolovich’s rating system, new assistant coach Jacob Yoro received the highest compliment when he was deemed “another Simba walking on the door.”
Yoro fits the Warriors’ workmanlike criteria. He grinded his way through the coaching circuit, fueled by his passion for football and “a lot of ramen and a lot of ham sandwiches.” He said he received financial and emotional support from his parents. It also helped that there were periods when he did not own a car and lived in a coach’s basement.
But that’s not unique to this staff. Offensive line coach Chris Naeole worked on a ranch in high school. Rolovich worked in construction to supplement his part-time coaching job at City College of San Francisco. Legi Suiaunoa, Brian Smith, Kefense Hynson, Craig Stutzmann, Mayur Chaudhari and Abraham Elimimian have low-paying coaching jobs on their resumes. Marc Moody left a full-time coaching job to work as a graduate assistant at UH. Last year, recruiting coordinator gave a Facetime tour to a family, holding the cell phone while walked — and narrated — the UH campus for 30 minutes.
Yoro should be a nice fit.

Yep, you are seeing double.
Rolovich issued only double-digit jersey numbers yesterday. Rolovich said he borrowed the idea in which players must earn the coveted single digits.
David Manoa, who wore No. 3, said he liked the challenge. Tui Unga, who has emerged as team leader, said he found No. 97 in his locker instead of his usual No. 7. He said he is fine with any number, and his only focus is on the team’s development this spring.
Go warriors!
Go Warrior coaches !!! I appreciate your dedication and hard work. Last year’s turn around is testament to your efforts.
Toid! Great post, wanna see it all come together on the field. Chances are, Na’ole worked at the same ranch as his dad – Kualoa Ranch. As one of my Ka’a’awa brothers once told me, once you’ve worked as a Cowboy, no job is too hard!
GO WARRIORS!!!
*Nae’ ole that should read above.
Jason Yoro is another Simba walking IN the door.
A pride of Warrior Simbas to defend Pride Rock.
I like that the QB competition is open. I appreciate what Dru did for this team last year, but have heard high praise for one of the Cole’s. We’ll see.
Hope Rolo also puts the player’s name
on the jersey too…
And Rolo should give Cooke Field
a nick name, “Cookie Monster Field”
and expect his players to play like
mad men wanting to eat your cookies.
🙂
btw, how’s his plans for a mascot doing???????
The second string QB position is probably more open than the starting position but Dru should still stay hungry and improve.
THE PAST TENSE FOR “GRIND” IS “GROUND”, NOT GRINDED.
QB position should be an open competition. As good as Brown became, he still had a major problem with the rain and wet ball against New Mexico … I think we lost the game because of his inability to grip the ball. On the other hand, you have a pro type QB (6-4 Cole McDonald) with sprinter speed coming off a redshirt freshman year. As a senior he passed for over 2,300 yards and rushed for nearly 1,100. That’s a true dual threat. So I think you have to open up the competition … including for Cole Brownholtz and Kyle Gallup.
That all said, a QB with 10 games experience as a successful starter is hard to ignore. I’m still guessing we will see Brown as the starter for the next two years and then McDonald taking over for the subsequent two years. If there is a change … it will be earned the hard way on the field.
