Tryout for Blaze
Blaze Soares clarifies that he has a tryout, not a free-agent deal, with the Chicago Bears this weekend.
The difference, I’m told, is a tryout does not come with signing bonus. A free agent is part of an NFL team’s 80-player offseason roster; a tryout player is not.
* * * * *
We’ve seen it before.
Big game. Then big disappointment.
Not last night. The volleyball Warriors came back. And came back. Everybody had a role in the victory.
And now comes the other inevitable: After winning back the fans, the Warriors won’t play another home match this season. The MPSF semifinals and title match, and NCAA final four all will be played on Stanford’s home court.
* * * * *
The Warriors will need to win the MPSF tournament to earn a berth in the final four. There is little chance they will earn the lone at-large berth. As the MPSF’s regular-season champion, Stanford is likely to earn a berth, even if it loses to UH in Thursday’s MPSF semifinals. The tournament winner has an automatic berth in the final four. That means for the Warriors, beating Stanford and advancing to the MPSF final will not be good enough.
* * * * *
Jett Jasper lost in his bid for the ASUH presidency. But he said he plans to remain involved in campus issues.
* * * * *
I like what’s happening with the football Warriors’ defense, especially in the secondary. The corners — Lametrius Davis and Jeramy Bryant — are solid. Kawika Ornellas also has been playing well, and Lewis Walker was coming on before suffering some sort of injury to his right biceps yesterday. Walker has a doctor’s appointment tomorrow. Caution, I’m sure, is advised, because Bryant had a similar injury last year.
Quarterback David Graves is making it tough for the UH coaches to keep him out of the lineup. His work with the first team was impressive yesterday. Plus, his scrambling is very Colt-like.
First, baby! Was good seeing you today, ST. Guess I should have accepted your offer for the tickets, huh?
I ended up with four leftover tickets. I’ll get them autographed, then give them away on the blog.
3rd bebe!
happy aloha sunday everybody!
cheepono out.
Though not the official NCAA Final Four, with the top 9 Men’s VB teams in the country playing in the MPSF (according to the latest poll), I think we can sorta consider the semifinals at Stanford the unofficial Final Four. So, congrats to the Warriors for making it this far.
Congratulations to Coach Wade and the Warriors for the BIG, exhilarating win. Watching the replay now reliving the excitement. Some of us booked our air right after the game…next stop: Palo Alto! Go Warriors!
Does anybody know who the two basketball recruits who were with coach Arnold at the vb match?
from today’s ST column ….
• Linebacker Blaze Soares, in a text message to The Advertiser, said he will sign with the Chicago Bears.
Estes signed the standard three-year contract, (agent) Zuckerman said, with a five-figure signing bonus that “is one of the larger signing bonuses given to an undrafted player”. (Estes signing with the Jags)
Congratulations.
CONGRATULATIONS COACHES AND PLAYERS FOR WARRIOR VOLLEYBALL!!
What an incredible match tonight and it was wonderful to see such and animated crowd. Oops most of the animated fans were sitting around me…yeah baby!! Great to see all the Tsaikos in attendance also.
Next stop…Palo Alto!!
PP I just heard you say Woohoo! on TV. I’m sure that you were speaking to #2 FOY Maurice Torres…not even close to our #1 FOY Jonas Umlauft!! He was by far the best player on the court tonight…36 kills…match that #2!!
As a certain conversationalist would say….you are NOTHING!!
Congratulations to Coach Wade and the Warriors for the BIG, exhilarating win. Watching the replay now reliving the excitement. Some of us booked our air right after the game…next stop: Palo Alto! Go Warriors!
Interesting…seems like I read the previous post before…hmmmmm???
I just saw the Tsai-man interviewing Josh on the replay. Can you say Napa Valley???
Way to go, Volleybows! No quit- one more game! Just one more game!
Go Warriors!!!
mornin.
it seems like i was just here.
“Wish you were here, the weather is beautiful”
That would be an appropriate autgraph signing on those tix.
Can’t believe I missed such a good game, but family comes first. Congrats to the VB Warriors, just keep on keeping on, all the way to NCAA Champs.
awesome game, GO WARRIORS, GO BOWS, JUST GO………….

A fantastic SUNNY Sunday!
Yesterday and today are good days to be a ‘Bow/Warrior.
Whoo-hoo!!!
I do not understand why the Wahine article is down in the Isle File.
good job Brew,
i like that one 🙂
WM,
i should’ve said howzit at Ching field, but i was too anxious to give ‘the beast’ a hug…….be safe 🙂
It will be a warm one in the low to mid-60’s today!!!
Have a good flight Liz.
Was just looking at the UH website for the schedule this coming weekend an was wondering why UH doesn’t schedule the Na Wahine to start their Dbl header around noon and move the start time for the baseball games to around 4 so that the fans who want to go to both the Softball and Baseball games could attend both sports?
Want more fans at both venue’s how about if you attend the Softball games you get your hand stamped, show that at the baseball gate and you get some kind of a discount or maybe a coupon for a free meal or a couple of free beers for those that partake. Outside the box guys……..
On the plane for home. Ahhh looo haaa! Kakahiaka!
Sorry that I referred to Coach Arnold as “Gib” in a post last night. No disrespect meant. It’s just easier to use shortcuts when entering from a phone.
I was very impressed that Coach Arnold and his players stayed for the whole game. They really got to see the Stanley rock last night.
Good luck to Coach Wade and his team as they they journey to Stanford for the MPSF finals!
Pomai ~ Not a bad marketing idea. First you gotta get whomever is responsible, to take that silly box off of their head!
I know how you feel. Of all the matches I wish I could have attended, this is the one! Mahalo again to Jm2375 for offering a seat in the ultimate cheering section. Family first.
Great Morning All!
Hope the Traveling Tsaikos get their voices back by Thursday! Have a great trip; wish we could join you.
I like that Rolo is giving Graves a shot with the 1’s. The future looks bright! (and I no mean the too distant future at that!)
Pomai-
Wondering how many decision makers actually thought of that idea with the game scheduling. Then K5 can broadcast both games also.
To me, thats inside the box common sense.
ah, i get it…. rolling…. like nejc’s match winning serve off the net and down for the ACE!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDppSbom55A
Maverick,
Probably not enuf setup time for K5 to do both.
…plus get hard enuf time getting Papa Leahey to “move over” just in the SB booth….how you going get him to move all the way over to the Les in time? 😆
D-1 ~ Papa moves in mysterious ways…so cue the son!
Kekoa,
That would work!
Off to the big tool sale….
Maverick en d1 Lets see the choice’s are to watch/televise a team that is going for the WAC title an are 17-0 in their conference and 42 &11 overall or a team that is going for a winning season and are 4-7 in their conference and 24-19 overall. To me, an only me there isn’t much of a decision.
The Na Wahine Koa rule!!!!!!
Yahoo! Van Doornum”s HR ties it at 4-4! Tsigh, guess we’re in for another slug-fest in Ruston. Just hope they can keep crushing the ball.
Plus a shot at the National Championship
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Erm, ahem!
Kendall:
They were at the volleyball match last night.
Don’t tell me you didn’t go to the volleyball match?
As I understand it, this is the preferred way to address:
McMackin — Coach Mack
Rolovich — Rolo
Aranda — Dave or Coach Aranda
Shaw — Gordy
Coolen — Bob
Trapasso — Coach Trap
Wade — Charlie or Chuck
Arnold — Gib. (Coach Arnold is his father.)
Donovan — Donovan.
Leahey — Leahey
Curran — Bobby
Kekaula — Robert
Wai — Wai-Wai.
ST,
Okay, Gib it is. I guess Coach Arnold brings up the wrong images for some fans. As Gib says, he’d like to restore the Arnold name for UH MBB fans.

Battery Built, Battery Built
Wait: Is it Battery Built, or Battery Bill?
http://www.batterybill.com/db2/00125/batterybill.com/_download/BatteryBillFinal.mp3
Then again, I thought the lyrics to Tiny Bubbles included:
“Tiny bubbles, make me wanna hold her …”
Everybody else tells me it’s: “Tiny bubbles, make me warm all over …”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRfjv6uf95Y
Wahine article:
I did the rewrite for Friday’s game, but because the softball game ended around the time of the football practice and the free-agent signings, and because the window before the volleyball match was only 90 minutes, the desk had to do yesterday’s rewrite.
Rewrites are when you interview coaches and players (by telephone) after road games, then piece together a story.
Just so you know, a writer gets a byline for non-game road stories culled from telephone interviews. No byline road game stories.
Its Battery Bill.
Also, bylines aren’t just for giving writers credit. They’re also for making writers accountable. If there’s a screwup, you want to be able to say: “Tsai’s a jerk. I’m going to call him up and yell at him.”
I do notice that when I answer the phone, people are really nice to me. But when I don’t, they leave hostile messages. And, of course, we have caller ID at work, so when I call them back, they’re nice again.
Kazz:
My son’s phone keeps dying out fast. Do you think I should go to Verizon or to Battery Bill. Battery Bill.
Good article on BS
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=maisel_ivan&id=5089959
Arggghyhhh! Nate Klein is pitching Batting Practice for LaTech. How obliging; how disgusting too! 8 runs in one inning? Good grief!
Good morning, Tsaiko world!
Stephen,
Great story about last night’s game.
ST,
I think Battery Bill does heavy duty stuff. Maybe the do cell phone battery extensions but VZW has the extended batteries for cell phones for sure.
I’m still trying to *ahem* recover from that awesome game last night.
Brooks Baehr of Hawaii News Now was the MAN!!!!
He sat two rows in front of us and was really imploring the hand sitters to make some SERIOUS noise. He’s a true passionate fan no doubt!!!
Hmmmm I wonder if Ed Case actually attended the match? I’d figure we should consider he was leeching onto the UH fans by sign-waving right outside the music building in front of the UH parking garage.
I hate going to Verizon. Long lines. And they keep trying to sell me new plans. Wena and I are on T-Mobile, but our kids are on Verizon.
ST,
Really? Which one you go to? I’ve never had that problem with the VZW store in Pearl City. Maybe because I counter act all their attempts at cross selling with oddball questions on purpose.
ST,
You could do a Google search for an extended battery for your phone for online stores that sell such things if you want to avoid going into the store. Might be cheaper too.
Try http://www.androidcentral.com for your Droid phone.
Go to the one that advertises w/your company. They are the ones who pay the salaries and the bills.
Missed an opportunity in Ruston today.
Ah geez……..
Sorry ST, again I need to read slower. I didn’t see that its your son’s phone with the problem.
My battery keeps dying quick too but then again when one is too lazy to get out of bed to go online draining the battery on your handset is inevitable.
That was the match of the season last night, glad the turn out was so great, the guys deserved that. Jonas looked like he was having a blast and loving all the fans cheering him and the rest of the warriors. He really gets the crowd going after kills.
Any idea if any volleyball recruits were there?? Wish they all could have been there and experience that atmosphere. How could they not want to be a part of that??
Before I decide to function with society today…
Here’s a story I was saving:
So I was 24 HOUR Fitness last week and overheard spme guys talking about sports and getting their kids involved. One guy asks another “you go UH volleyball because I think you should take them, the team is pretty good and they just started playing in the WAC”.
Ok so like I said this happened last week and there are TWO things WRONG with that statement.
Right before I decided to say something to advise them to buy tickets for last nights game, out if NOWHERE the other friend says, wait “I think you are thinking of softball”… To which the other guy replies “No! They’re not even that good and besides who cares about softball? At least the baseball team is undefeated right now…”
After this cluster—- of a conversation I decided to correct them.
So I told them that the volleyball team is indeed just starting their season and that the next home game is on Wednesday night of next week.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Great match last night. I need to learn to pace myself. Was out of commission for the 4th and 5th sets.
Saw Gib last night at the game standing up and cheering. He was getting into it. It was great to see him bring his team over to support the volleyball team.
Next stop….. Palo Alto & Napa Valley!!
Stupid typos. I think this first version of the blkberry storm was worn out its welcome with me.
I love your post was really interesting, but I was wondering If the US senate has a hard time understanding the new health care bill from Obama how can common folks? When will we be able to understand what he has done?
vballfan1-
I couldn’t agree with you more! So much so, I think that I’ll drag this post over from last yesterday’s blog:

The Crowd .
The Band.
The Warriors.
The Rubber Band Man.
The Baton Twirling Wonder Girl.
The Garlic Fries.
The win!
There hasn’t a better, more exciting men’s college volleyball match played this year. Anywhere.
Nuff said.
Ok… Now I’m having grammar issues.
Time to step away….
Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana,
Have to add my amen to comments about last nights knock down slug out to the last point volleyball match. Such closely matched and competitive teams playing with such passion, speed and power!!! And the crowd and the band and Alan Hackbarth in the house and the shrieking volleyball teenage girls. Just great world class stuff although it was white knuckle time for a lot of the fifth game.
We usually have only gone to the women’s volleyball games. Even during the Yuuval Kaatz days, I just watched the men on TV at home. But Charley has made a believer out of me.
And the pricing was very family friendly. Our party of 4 adults and three kids will be back to watch key games next season as a result of last night.
I’m betting every Hawaii fan who attended last night’s game will want to come back and have another taste of that stuff, it was screaming loud up in nose bleed country on that last point!!!
Go Warriors!! Go Bows!!
A request was made to the coaches and to the Ahtletic Department’s top administrators over a month ago and re-sent again as soon as the Warrior Bowl time was set to make some minor adjustments to next Friday’s games schedule – start the softball game at 5:15 pm rather than 6 pm and pass out coupons at the WB & the softball game to get into The Les without charge anytime after the end of the third inning. The baseball game begins at 6:35 pm.
Probably the problem in shifting the schedule is the coverage on K5 or 1420 – maybe even the visiting media – but 45 minutes should not be that much of an adjustment issue Perhaps The Big Cheeses feel that people getting off work cannot make it to the campus in time for a 5:15 start.
In any case, we’ll be at the softball game and after that will watch the WB for half an hour or so before heading on into The Les.
April 25, 2010 Practice/Scrimmage Report
MR. TSAI AND THE TSAIKOS, FEEL FREE TO DELETE MY POST IF IT FEELS THAT THIS PLAY-BY-PLAY ACCOUNT OF THE SCRIMMAGE GIVE AN UNDUE ADVANTAGE TO THE OPPOSING TEAM. PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL STOP DOING THE PLAY-BY-PLAY.
One-on-one drills between the OL and DL
From what I have seen so far, DL really owns this drill. Pepa looks good. He and along with some of the first stringers who has been the most consistent on the OL on this drill. I have been impressed with J. Loeffler as a LT. He is the guy that have caught my eye during this drill. From the many practices that I have attended this spring, I don’t recall him ever losing a one-on-one battle. The guys that impresses me on the DL during this drill is Ryan “the beast” Eastman, and two DEs that have their jersey’s turned inside out. I know one of them is Earvin Sione and I believe the other guy is Waylon Lolotai. Ryan just seems to be able to find a way to get through. He has good techniques Not so impressed with one OL. I won’t name who he is but he just gets flat out beat all the time. He needs to move his feet.
Highlight of the day will go to David Hafoka. The OG was so blown away that Hafoka stopped going after the would be QB once he got passed the OG at the line of scrimmage.

Rolled out of bed around 11 this am.
That was such a great game last night. I’m still looking for my voice.
GO WARRIORS!!! EAT DEM BIRDIES!!
ST, PP, Stretch, Rob25 & anyone else going to the game (brew?) – have a great time. Bet there’ll be more UH fans in the stands!!!
Does UH have contemporaneous documentation for these injuries? 🙂
WarriorMojo,
Good to have seen you at practice. Sorry I couldn’t stop by. I had to get my Japanese guests to meet the Japanese coaches. They were carrying food gifts for the coaches from Japan. It sounded like the coaches were from the ‘University of Kona’, but ST needs to correct me on that. Come say HI! the next time you see me at practice. No be shy.
vball fan:
I think UH is done recruiting money players.
They’re into the preferred walk-on stage now.
One of the best runs came with Dragon Rawson serving.
I heard someone say, “this is just a bad rotation” for Pepperdine.
Actually, no, it wasn’t. I mean, with Dragon serving, UH didn’t have a libero in the lineup; the back row had Dragon and Josh Walker. To go off on a run like that with no primary passers in the back row was incredible.
And I like how UH’s block and defense took Maurice Torres and then Cory Riecks out of the game.
So, home game kickoffs will be 5:30 this season. 30 more minutes to t-gate! Woohooo!!
Re: # 66: Kazz, U wun rascal bugga!!
Hi, lopaka43!
I would like to express my appreciation for your post. That’s really great to know that there are such people like you who do their job very well and with such enthusiasm.
Hope to see Brew at the game this Thursday!!
Got new tools!
I show you mine next time DPK! 😈
Boy, crazy long line for checkout.
Battery Bill has all kine batteries….I’d check there for a replacement first.
Thanks BleedGreen808.
I doubt you giving away much to any opponent….what are they gonna discover? Hawaii throws a lot! 😯
Re: Baseball and Softball Telecasts – unless you have multiple remote equipment, you cannot just finish one broadcast and immediately set up for another in a different location in a short time frame. it takes several hours to do that.
Nice report, Bleed Green.
True that about the TV set up time.
While it’s going to be a mess Friday night, at least this allows the softball team to have a fond farewell on Saturday.
As for the mess on Friday … oh, wait, I’ll be in Napa.
what a match eh?
still buzzing about the game.
good thing i dvr’d the game for three hours.
got home in enough time that i could extend the recording past two episodes of “family guy”.
got to meet ryan “patrick” henry and zach “monster” masch this morning at services. in fact they were intro’d on stage by sam “kamu” kapu, III.
nice kids. the “monster” is huge and nary an ounce of fat on his ribs.
How’s Steven Christian coming along? Hope he has since recovered from the injury that kept him out last season.
Kind of worried about all those hurries and sacks noted in Bleedgreen’s report. I hope the O-line gets it right, the warriors will struggle to win games if the O-line has not improved since this past year.
Stephen,
Yup, didn’t attend the game had a family function over at my house. What made me sick was that we at dinner and just watched the game. Had I known dinner would turn into that I would have said let’s go out to eat and head over to the game.
Did you get a name/names of the recruits. I am excited for Men’s Volleyball, but I think the biggest turnaround could be made in basketball next season.
Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Good Morning/afternoon Tsaikos: Just finished watching the replay again. Anyone notice the postgame arena “tsunami” sirens blaring for the “Waves” ❓ 😛
BleedGreen,
mahalo for the kind words for ‘the beast’ 🙂 he’s just chomping at the bit, but knows he’s gotta wait for his chance. he would jump in with the 1’s if he could, but there is a pecking order and he is doing his ‘thang’.
the scout team will be a great chance for him to work against the 1’s and keep him ‘in the game’. just think, this time next year he’ll be good to go and will be battling for playing time and moving up the depth chart. the Offensive Center that he practiced against for the past 2 years Kyle Mucher, 6’3 310 lbs, all american, just signed a free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills 🙂
you know, i know, we all know…..speed kills, even more so at this level of competition 🙂
GO WARRIORS 🙂
I wonder if there will be any radio coverage for the game on Thursday??!!??
maybe a live feed from Stanford? not sure……dave would know, haha
or Stretch could post here on the WB as the game is being played.
ralph,
good idea, kind of like Kazz and softball right?
Ill be at softball for sure both Friday and Sat but I set my DVR for the softball Sat Senior Night tv broadcast and it was deleted.
I checked the listings and for some reason K5 has the softball game televised for 7pm and not 4pm…
What the???
I think I’ll be a little busy in between points to be posting on the blog. That’s the best time to have conversations with the players
Stretch: According to an barely-understood announcement immediately following last night’s victory, I believe I heard that ESPN1420 will be carrying the match. Whether it will be Scott Robbs or the Stanford announcers, I have no idea.
As for any Friday night tv broadcast – according the current ZIPZAP schedule, neither softball nor baseball will be on K5 Friday evening live nor will there be any delayed broadcasting. I assume that Don Robbs will be on 1420 calling the Basebows game as it happens.
If this is the case, then why cannot the start times be adjusted?
Mahalo for the great blog read! Back from PDX and sitting at Go. Ahhh, home sweet home!!!
I think that Stretch telling Torres…”You’re nothing” like an Mafioso…took Torres more out of the game. You should have seen him glaring at Stretch for the rest of the match while PP was taunting with her friendly wave and hellos!! 😳
Welcome home Liz!!!
Brew?? Where are you Brew??
Watching the replay AGAIN and saw Ric talking to that idiot ref Dan Hironaka even before Charlie comes to unleash the fury on him also. It’s just ridiculous that an official can be warned about this and still he doesn’t look or notice the positioning for something that was happening ALL game long. Incredible the amount of inept officiating we are forced to witness.
Okay…I will go back to my cave and stop the venting!!
Yay Liz!
You made it to HNL safe and sound. Now on to Kaua’i!!!

Maaan. I was following Twitter and this blog and FB last night trying to find out the outcome of game 5. It was after 1AM in Portland and I was having a 1 man celebration before falling asleep.
Thanks for screaming for me, Tsaikettes! I heard jm*.* is still voiceless 😆
Rob25- u are awesome!
Ok time fo Go!
Latahs!
I feel like Kazz for some reason!
Now time to check out what else is going on in this world.
Howzit Everybody,
Rob25,
No doubt on #108. I think I lost my voice just trying to yell at the ref’s from my seat in upper level AA. Man they started off o.k. but as the game went on both Hironaka and the up official started showing there age. Look like they needed to get there eye’s checked and maybe needed to take another nap because then went look tired after the first match.
By the way Rob25 and or Stretch if you still our there,
What one of the Pepperdine fan’s had one problem with you guys last night. I stay asking because I saw one guy that look like he was with Pepperdine come down and look like was trying to start some trouble. I just wondering what the heck he wanted cause went look like he never come down from his seat to say hi.
rob25…i knew that dan hironaka was not going to make that call after charlie ripped in to him. no official is going to allow a coach to publicly humilate him and get away with it.
perhaps charlie should have taken the “kill em with kindness” approach that have gotten him a call later in the game.
if i am reading between the line correctly…stretch won’t have to worry about the the espn radio broadcast because he may be viewing it live.
and no worry. dave will be there too.
I think sooner than not David Graves gonna make you forget about Colt Brennan. Not saying he’s better or anything cause he hasn’t played a down under the spotlights yet, but just saying… In his own way, he’s going to be big time! If Coach Rolo is holding out on the number 1 QB, it’s probably because Graves is the guy but wants to ensure he fully understands what he’s doing. He doesn’t have the experience but it’s only a matter of time… Sometimes I wish Coach Rolo still had a couple more years to play…cause that 2001 game against the BYU kittens is probably one of the most dominating performances by a college QB ever!
I sat in front of about half-dozen or so people clad in orange. When Charlie went off on the ref, they started yelling for a yellow card. 😈 These refs have been arounf too long. Brand X mentioned that the up official was the same guy who did the Wahine WAC championship game vs BYWho in 1998. We need younger refs.
Kendall:
Dayton Morinaga has the info you need. Call 525-8040 and ask the clerk to transfer you to Dayton.
I really do hope our secondary can get it together this year, always seems to be one of the weak points on the defense. I like Lewis Walker, he should crack the rotation if not a full time starter on special teams.
Da tutu has landed. Ahhhh.
Yay Liz!
Go Blaze! Forget the bonus — make the team!!!
Too bad for Jett.
#2’s try harder.
d1, ST, and Bulla,
Mahalo! I try to be as general as much as possible on my reports cuz don’t want to give away what’s going on at practice.
Mahalo with a shaka!
Yeeeeeeee Daaaaawwwwggggggyyyyyyyyy!
Congrats to Radford “the mighty rams” for winning the OIA DII championship!
Good luck in the state tournament!
Almost forgot…congratulations to Charlie Wade and company.
Congrats to the wahine SB for stomping on Nevada.
Also, congrats to the Baseball team.

BleedGreen808,
Was my tool showing? 😯
Good Luck Blaze!
Anybody want a DVD of last night’s volleyball match? I decided to make myself a copy. I’ll make one for anyone else who’d like a copy. Especially you mainland Tsaikos who weren’t able to catch the broadcast. Email hoherb at yahoo dot com. I should be able get it out in a day or two.
Colt was a scrambler? Bombs away….deadly accurate yes. Scrambler? not really eh?

BleedGreen808
Such a great addition to the blog! Mahalo for your posting on the practice. You paint the picture without getting into the details…should satisfy everyone including the censors.
Kazz
I noticed in this morning’s paper that the team was trying to shorten the game for Stephanie because she had been sick the day before. Kinda explains why Coolen started Kaia in game 1. Must have been some drama for Coach C and the team when they found out their ace might not be available. I very much liked the way they responded. Winning the first game against Holverson and then pounding the Wolf Pack 20-0 with Ricketts throwing a perfect game. After Holverson couldn’t hold the Wahine in games 1 and 2, Nevada was done. No spirit and enthusiasm. In the 3rd game, I could hear the Nevada folks go off… cheering their first BASE HIT.
Watched Kanoa Leahey’s recap of last night’s game and there was Rob25 in the first frame, lower left corner – right above the “2.” Haha! Yelling “Let’s Go ‘Bows” with the rest of the crowd.
Was it really that loud last night? I couldn’t hear. Maybe it was a few games this season sitting between A-joe and Stretch that made me deaf – or maybe because my ears are definitely smaller than my mouth. Wow, Maurice Torres sure got it from Stretch. Stretch got the “eye” from their star freshman a couple of times throughout the match. We really gotta bring it to Palo Alto – good thing Napa is AFTER the Stanford game. We are trying to get our NorCal friends together to make a bigger Hawaii presence on Thursday. Anyone else care to join us?!?!
Thanks Stephen. Hopefully he will have something in tomorrow’s edition, but if not, I’ll give him a call.
Kama – the Pepperdine fan was complaining about Hackbarth moving around the arena. He was trying to get the attention of Dan Hironaka, and I guess he forgot to put on his hearing aid along with his glasses. According to MPSF rules, it’s not allowed but if Hackbarth has tickets for different seats, I am pretty sure he is allowed to move around. I told him that and he told me to show him the rules that it’s allowed. I asked him to show me the rules that it isn’t allowed. He asked for my email address. I told him if he is going to send me the rules the next day, it don’t matter since the game will be over by then.
BleedGreen808,
Mahalo for the great play-by-play. Needed you at the last practice at Cooke Field. Didn’t have a line-up & had to keep bugging Slugger about who made the play, etc.
Stretch its called multitasking, talk all you want, you don’t have to look at your keyboard to type the play by play on the WB 🙂 Kazz doesn’t look at his keyboard when he is posting and jumping around the softball stadium
Emily Hartong and her teammates won the 2010 Northern Lights 18 Open Championship. She plays for the Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club Rockstarts 18 Open.
Jane Croson with Sports Shack wins Farwest Qualifier for JO. Laguna Beach with Monica Stauber and Keala Goodman finished third, also qualified for JO.
Stretch and Kama: Hackbarth is moving around during the time out period, not changing sides with UH team. So the wave fan and Hironaka have no say. 😕 And I don’t see anything to restrict one from having multiple seats.
Following taken from MPSF Rules
so why does the crowd chant “lets go bows”?
the official nickname of the volleyteam is the “warriors”. that was done years ago by wilton when he embraced the june jones’ change to warriors.
ralph are you employed by volleytalk?
no but I got his from Mizuno facebook, you got a problem with posters on volleytalk, its just a forum.
the mizuno LB volleyball club 17 open also won their division championship. Moenoa plays on that team and she verballed to UCLA
don’t know if Waber’s Elite 951 played in this week qualifier, but I think her team already qualified for the JO.
his=this
‘Cause it works?!?!
ralph are you employed by volleytalk?
Al you got a clone named Larry

This is a family blog…
Just joke…sorry, couldn’t resist.
Let me check
al,
Only to climb the steps….
somebody said he was moving.
I was cheering Let’s Go Warriors…I think that some people do also, but sometimes it’s easier to go with the crowd and say Bows. That’s what the cheerleaders chant…maybe someone should change their cheers.
By the way, where have the cheerleaders been…last couple of matches…none of them were there and the basketball team was there until the end. Hope they saw what it was like to keep playing until the end of the game.
robbie….ouch!
d1–
Nope, no tool showing. Saw you drinking a soda and wearing a white polo shirt with green stripes (might be an under armour polo shirt) and your wife is wearing a green t-shirt (she is to your left). To your right, about six seats, are two hecklers. One with a black hat with a white t-shirt.
What? And miss the greatest comedy act in town?
Rob25 – the girls said the cheerleaders told them that the cheer season was over. They asked them to be there for the game. I didn’t know there *was* a cheer season. Somebody needs to have a talk with whomever made this rule.
Perhaps a written request should be sent to Jim Donovan to conduct a series of opportunities – electronically as well as in person – for the public to talk about the preferred name(s) for the teams as well as more private discussions with the coaches.
We could have one name for the men’s teams and one for the women’s.
Aren’t the LaTech mens’ teams called the Bulldogs and the women’s teams the Lady Techsters? What other schools have two different names?
Don’t forget that the fund-raising arm for the entire Athletic Department – `Ahahui Koa Anuenue is literally translated as the Association of Warrior Rainbow. Sorry – I don’t know how to make the macron over the A in Anuenue using this program.
The chanting last night caused some temporary hoarseness for both of us today – we were sitting less than 15 feet behind the big-butt official and I was sorely tempted to toss something at him, but I didn’t want to create a situation in which Hawai`i might have to forfeit the game. The UH student fans sitting across the aisle picked up on our chants last night by the second set. A couple of times we got some serious stink-eye.
BTW- As of yesterday afternoon, I am now the proud owner of an IPhone. Still trying to learn how to make & receive phone calls and will be taking tutorials at the Apple Store in Ala Moana Center during the next couple of weeks to learn how to use the apps, send/receive e-mails, text, etc. Am really excited about being in the Second Decade of the Twenty-First Century.
Al…just keeping it real!
JM…WTH!!! There are still sports to cheer for?!?! Time for PP and I to make some magic!! Your girls in????
What do cheerleaders do in the off-season?
Congratulations WDoc. Look to see some technological wizardry real soon.
Rob25 – only for mvb. 😀 unfortunately.
They rest their faces and resume looking like normal people that don’t smile all the time with the weight of the real world punching them in the face 24/7/365…
I don’t know how those guys and gals pull off those demeanors even for only a 2-4 hour period.
Ahem …
http://www.jnagaoka.net/hawaiian.pdf
So you would type
Ānuenue
.wow Rob, Jm and PP as cheerleaders, worth the price of admission
Hmm, normally that works so I can show the code. I guess the software processes the HTML differently than I expected.
I think Charlie had to ask the band master if she would bring the band to the vb matches this season
Jason surfaces!! Almost thought he was a spambot. 😆
Great volleyball match last night. On to Palo Alto.
Kazz,
Yes. Ed Case was at the game. He was close to the action about 10 rows in front of us.
An incredible day in paradise! So enjoyable! Besides the weather, the mood was for sure set up by the awesome showing of the VolleyBows and SoftBows. Must have been a lot of sun today. My solar water heater was near 160 degrees.
G’night folks…I’ll check out volleytalk and see if Ralph is there before I go to bed.
Thanks Al, I actually heard about him on the wsn board, wondering who the other guy is. Is it Dominique carr?
Ralph…yes, Charlie wants the band, Hackbarth and the cheerleaders at the game. Changing the atmosphere for Men’s Volleyball by trying to bring the fans and the fun back to SSC!!
Make it an event like it used to be.
Stanford drew 523 fans to watch them play UCLA in sb and they did charge admission. Realistically, a half filled Na Wahine stadium would be about 500 fans, seems about the norm for college sb in the Pac 10. To say that we would lose fans if admission is charged is groudless, all sb venues do not have thousands coming to the game. Every little bit of money generated helps the UHAD balance the budget.
Nevada charged $7 for the UH series per Wolfpack website on ticketing.
It was funny watching Harkbarth(?) work the Pepperdine players last night.
We have a special show tomorrow. David Graves is the guest. It will start at 1;30.
Curiosity kills the cat. I’ve got a question from last night’s match: On one play, the Warriors hit a shot near the Pepperdine back line, the line judge signaled good, a Pepperdine player protested, and the ref over-ruled the line judge. I thought the shot was good. Did the replay confirm the original call or the over-rule?
Yes, I know it’s irrelevant at this point. But, I got very irritated at the Pepperdine player who tried to influence the ref on two other critical calls later in the match.
Rob last night was a good start to change the vb culture back to the Katz and allen allen days, too bad its come to an end in Hawaii. Something to build on for next year, Charlie needs to get Derek to promote the mvb team through out the year on the website and H Mail, a well publicized team should be able to generate a bigger fan base next season. People got to plan ahead on how they will spend their dollars in these tough times, so if people knew tickets will be on sale in 4 months or so, they can start saving. Not everyone has Stretch’s financial clout.

I’ll take your word about the tool. Please don’t attempt to show me.
We can’t rely on Alan Hackbarth forever.
Would like to see the “Bowzos II” in attendance get a little more funky in the stands… They’ve already got the costumes, but need the dance lessons I guess… 😆
Oh wait, no, the students get admonished when they stand up so I guess they have that working against them…
“Small world” revelation this weekend:
Freddy (my friend Ellen’s partner in the “Karaoke Madness” party & karaoke equipment provider biz) is a childhood friend of Al. Al told me and I called Freddy today to confirm. Yikes! I didn’t know he went to McKinley and was two years behind us.
I asked Freddy a few more questions about the Karaoke Contest that starts this week at “8-10” karaoke bars. These participating establishments will independently hold around 10 weekly contests and a semi-final in July.
The winners from each establishment (I am told 4– a male and female singer in both pop and country genres) will go on to compete at the finals to he be held at the Japanese Cultural Center in August. Winners there go on to Laughlin, Nevada (all expenses paid) for a week for a national contest. BTW, the songs are in English.
Freddy said the participating karaoke bars vary yearly. He also noted that the bars often hold their contests on different nights, so it is possible to enter at multiple places every week. 🙂
Art at Genji’s has invited the Tsai-kos to enter (no wonder Tina and Gaye have been leaving our private room door open lately) 😕 . Their weekly contest is on Monday nights starting at 7:00 PM (register by 5:00 PM)
This one is tough to call — it takes a lot of courage to enter these things (unless you are on a cruise ship and you won’t see the other people again). Hopefully some of the Tsai-ko 1st team Tsingers will step up. I know karaoke coach ST, always has some 5 star recruits hidden…
Good going Stephen regarding the Graves guest appearance. Do you concur with the growing list of fans who see David Graves as a very “special” quarterback?
Aloha to Rob Demello for his last weekend appearance. Go get’em Rob!

Michelle Waber and her 951 Elite team did qualify for the JO in the Northeast qualifer, April 4.
On cheering for MVB: I find it hard to distinguish what the cheerleaders are yelling if/when they are using the word “Warriors.” So that’s what they are cheering when it sounds garbled to me? It’s easier to hear “Bows”.
ST ~
Glad to hear that you are still having a Warrior Beat show! Is the HAMI group managing now? I read the SB sports stories & blogs today. I still think you are the best Sports writer out there. You are an excellent writer.
BleedGreen808:
Keep posting your practice / scrimmage reports.
Much appreciated.
Aloha.
Agreed Slugger….didn’t like the story on SB site. Stephen is the better writer, for sure!
Does anyone know the UH alma mater song? Here’s the youtube video.

I think the fans need to also learn the UH fight song. It would be nice for all the fans to sing it with the team.

And whatever happened to the victory song that was made famous by Lafaele and co. I would’ve thought it would become a tradition of the football warriors.

I’d like to see the team do the haka again.

Stephen was DEAD on about softball this year. Spoke with him late last softball season before thw NMSU series at home and Ill never forget how he said to look out for Kelly Majam when at that time I only knew about how she was first thought of as a possible pitcher.
Slugger, its no coincidence that the better stories are with the Advertiser. Stephen seems to have a better “channel” with the coaches.
BTW, the 2nd team Tsai-ko Tsingers are real close to the 1st team. But here’s the starting lineup on my Tsai-ko depth chart (my profound apologies if I miss anyone–it’s late and I work tomorrow)…

Hello. I appreciate this weblog. Just wondering if you want to make some cash from it? I recently signed up to a network that pays around 2 dollars each time one of my users do a quick survey to get access to quality content. Visit my website for more information. Think it is good for this weblog. Kindest Regards

just like austin did last year, graves may come out of spring camp a solid #2. if austin hadnt had that moped accident he’d of stayed at #2 out of fall camp too and could have seen a lot more game playing last season. as for thsi spring, like always we get to see the young guys more and the starters less. austin has a clear advantage at this point and rightly so.

You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your opinion.
Do you know where I can find any leads in NJ
I know that there is a large consensus that globalization is occuring at a rapid rate, but I am concerned that while communication and traveling large distances has improved vastly over the last two centuries, there is still a large disparity of wealth between the west and the third world. I am also concerned that we are assuming too much because trade had approximately the entire 19th century to flourish yet the disparity between britain, europe, america, etc. and the rest of the third world remained relatively static.
I recently started using hostgator, and found these coupons:
HostgatorPros

I know the coupon ‘1centhosting’ works good, but I’m sure the others do as well.
Best wishes.
I guess this is a good thing to have a revision for apps. I know its open source but there demand to be some sort of Approval seal for operating apps. I believe Google need to do this rapidly if they desire splendid apps to show up in Android.

Thanks very good for report, I follow your blog:-)
The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
bookmarked your post will be familiar with this latter . Regards, Mike
