Going the distance

Wideout Vasquez Haynes felt confident his broad jump — 10 feet, 3 inches — would stand as the best on a humid, windless Tuesday afternoon.

And then there was a roar — a loud roar — when walk-on Terrence Sayles soared 10-4.

A few minutes later, Marcus Kemp stuck a jump that was credited at 10-5.

And then Haynes, initiating his version of the re-entry rule, gave it one more shot. After a dramatic pause … Haynes was ruled to have jumped 10-6.

It topped a solid day of team testing for Haynes, who also had a 36-inch vertical jump.

ewaliko is a running back now?
perhaps he should audition for scott harding’s replacement.

  8. tommui July 30, 2014 9:01 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

tom-warriornation – thanks for all you do!

  9. al July 30, 2014 9:02 am

you know tom does a great thing for uh fans.
we did the san jose state thing two years ago and the seats were perfect. the camaraderie very enjoyable with fans from all over the place.

not sure if a tailgate mixer is planned, but, it was awesome.

  10. Stephen Tsai July 30, 2014 9:02 am

    Ewaliko is a running back.
And all the players say that Dominique Small, at least facially, resembles Emmitt Smith

  11. al July 30, 2014 9:03 am

two toms at the top of the morning.

  12. al July 30, 2014 9:04 am

boy if dominque small can run the rock like emmitt smith…”why I just don’t know?”

  13. maddog50 July 30, 2014 9:10 am

A-House, thanks for the kind words….I have had a chance to become friends with Kim and Joyce from Na Koa. I will also be fulfilling a dream by getting back to see 2 games, this year and plan on going to CSU…..Like I said it is good to be a Warrior……and again thanks for the kind words

  14. Pete Jek July 30, 2014 9:16 am

    Where is WR Keith Kirkwood?

  15. al July 30, 2014 9:21 am

is homesickness an ailment, disease, or an emotional stress?

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid July 30, 2014 9:29 am

    Good Morning Gangeez!;)

    Flying Warriors!!! Woohoo!

Thanks for the great pics Stephen, here comes Monday!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  17. bowwar July 30, 2014 9:38 am

UH’s QB situation is really starting to worry me…It looks like Woolsey will get the starting nod, primarily due to injuries to the other two QBs. The new QBs are still raw, so it looks like Woolsey will need to “step it up” we expect to win any games. This actually may affect our play calling to being more conservative than desired.

  18. RB July 30, 2014 9:48 am

ST the bottom picture is of Kawika Borden or Ryan Pasoquen? on twitter you have Kawika Borden and on here you have Ryan Pasoquen LOL. I believe it’s KB hehehehe

  19. Stephen Tsai July 30, 2014 9:55 am

Thanks. It is Borden, who’s still recovering from an injury.

  20. Old School Dave July 30, 2014 9:59 am

Used to look like those guys in the pics – some 40 years and one too many plate lunches ago 🙂

  21. Stephen Tsai July 30, 2014 10:30 am

It was really hot and muggy yesterday. Unfortunately, that’ll be the same time as practices this camp.

  22. jimmy the lock July 30, 2014 10:36 am

Maybe fortunately not all practices will be hot and muggy.

Make love not war, Hump day.

  23. Boolakanaka July 30, 2014 10:41 am

I once challenged Gwen Loud to a long jump–one of many major mistakes in a life filled with many mistakes–lol.

  24. Stephen Tsai July 30, 2014 10:52 am

    It’s an art.

  25. Dee July 30, 2014 10:55 am

Is Keith Kirkwood on the 2014 UH roster?

    25. Kirkwood is gone…

  28. al July 30, 2014 11:33 am

27…really too bad. I thought he was one who had great potential.

  29. tom-warriornation July 30, 2014 11:40 am

    Thanks Tom & Al.
Yes, a big Hawaii tailgate event is planned for San Jose this year; and local fans are planning Hawaii tailgates at both the Colorado & Rice road games. Let me know if you need Colorado tickets also. tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

  30. Dee July 30, 2014 11:55 am

    Did Kirkwood transfer to Rutgers?

  31. gobows July 30, 2014 12:03 pm

has anyone beaten ryan mouton’s 11 feet?

  32. Shoko July 30, 2014 12:30 pm

Hmm, in that picture Ewailiko looks like he put on some good weight. Might be pushing 200 pounds or thereabouts. Hard to tell actually.

  33. A-House July 30, 2014 12:34 pm

    tom #29:

our tour group has sent payment to Suh – waiting for tickets

    thanks for your help!

  34. bowwar July 30, 2014 12:37 pm

ST: Any further word on “transfers” still on the bubble getting qualified or enrolled at UH?

On another note, how is Colt Brennan doing since his football career is over? Is he still on Oahu and coaching at Kahuku? I only wish him the best, as he gave up ALOT to play for UH in his Senior Year and I wonder when we’ll see another player like him that will make an impact as he did on the UH scene.

  35. A-House July 30, 2014 12:43 pm

    #34:

if it occurs, al will be happy to see his “holy grail”

  36. A-House July 30, 2014 12:48 pm

“big OL at Kapolei” – probability of UH getting the top player is 0% when he mentions interest from USC

the “pull” of the likes of USC is too much for an 18 year old to say no!

then, this probably applies to many local athletes – especially in the area of golf or swimming or track or tennis or baseball or MVB

amazing that the ACC won the BB national championship – with all the hype given to the SEC or PAC10 or BIG 10 – BWC represented well!

  37. kawika49 July 30, 2014 1:59 pm

A house u already cost me over $500 to get us to 1000 Nakoa members…push for the next to get us to 1K.

  38. obachan July 30, 2014 3:01 pm

#23 hah boola – what were you thinking? As for me, no doubt – I excel in the short jump.

  39. hatakeman July 30, 2014 3:10 pm

Here are the passing stats from the spring fling:  Woolsey  14-24-1-164; Higgins 9-18-0-125 (1 TD);  Graham 0-1-0-0; Hughes 1-2-0-5. I wouldn’t worry too much about the QBs. Ikaika and Jeremy both looked pretty good during the spring. Losing Kirkwood will have small impact. Kemp and Pedroza both played well in the spring. Plus you have Harding at Slot.

  40. blaxican3120 July 30, 2014 4:14 pm

39 those qt stats aren’t very good! Especially since it’s going against a defense that just started learning their play book. Expect another rough season

  41. nutmegger July 30, 2014 5:07 pm

The QBs will step up. This is their time. The summer has given them a chance to get their timing and anticipation down. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. You gotta play the game to know who wins.

  42. Wes'side Warrior July 30, 2014 5:11 pm

    Howzit, Gang!

    Great pics, ST! Mahalo!

Finally got these titanium screws out of my foot. Now for the healing and rehab…

    Have a great day, everyone!

  43. Wes'side Warrior July 30, 2014 5:16 pm

Speaking of that Kapolei OL who mentioned USC…

One of my younger daughter’s former classmates in Georgia, a certain Tomon Fox, was recently recognized for winning the Class of 2016 DL MVP Award & The Coach’s Choice Overall DL MVP at the National Underclassmen Ultimate Elite 100 Showcase held at the University of Oklahoma! She used to help him with homework! Hahaha! I told her to tell him to come to UH.

    Again… fat chance, right?

  44. kapakahi July 30, 2014 6:17 pm

    #36 & #43,

That Kapolei OL also happens to be…….cousins with some UH football players……the Sateles (Samson, Hercules, Brashton, Liko).

  45. kapakahi July 30, 2014 6:20 pm

Don’t think that SC will be offering…..but Boise State already did.

  46. Warrior Dave July 30, 2014 6:28 pm

Robert Kekaula announced that Taz Stevenson is accepted to UH. Can play immediately.

  47. Jack Flash July 30, 2014 7:25 pm

Howzit Tsaikos! Getting excited for a new football season- GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!

  48. kawika49 July 30, 2014 7:29 pm

A-house, I am now officially one of the less than 1,000 Na Koas. lets get our numbers up!
    Looking forward to my brewsky!

  49. A-House July 30, 2014 7:32 pm

    kawika49 your #37:

I have decided to support the “non-revenue” sports by giving them a cash donation every year not to exceed my past mortgage interest deductions.

I will continue to support UH football in many different ways.

  50. jeezy33 July 30, 2014 7:36 pm

Would be exciting to see Trayvon and Taz as our starting safeties…. Marrell took a big step back last year IMO.

  51. A-House July 30, 2014 7:36 pm

    kawika:

I have been a member of NaKoa over 20 years and continue to support them via donations and purchase of the parking pass at Aiea Elementary ever since they started doing this.

yep, gotta push Na Koa membership!

  52. Jack Flash July 30, 2014 7:37 pm

I decided to renew my Na Koa membership, and will still honor my pledge from last year of doubling it if the team goes at least 3 and 3 through the first 6 games.

  53. kapakahi July 30, 2014 7:52 pm

Besides Kirkwood, where’s Barker, Josey, Patterson & Stubblefield?

  54. al July 30, 2014 10:12 pm

the true freshmen probably listed when enrolled at the start of the semester?

  55. al July 30, 2014 10:16 pm

I think that we have a boatload of wr’s types.

  56. RB July 30, 2014 10:42 pm

    Kirkwood #89, Barker #80, Josey #82, Patterson #84 & Stubblefield #9 are all on the 2014 roster.

  57. G-money July 30, 2014 10:51 pm

No forget Haynes at WR. Showed flashes.. I think he’ll be better than Gant, who was our best threat game-in-game-out last year. I’m looking for Kemp to step up or step out as the true freshmen look poised to give the veterans some rubs. Harding is steady, however lacks breakaway explosiveness and and/or height. I’m also expecting a lot from Pedroza, as it appears like he’s playing with something to prove. Lastly, I’ll never forget how I thought, “who is that #8?” when Ashley Lelie first broke out, so who knows if a Bukowski, Sayles or Anguay can do the same?

Wishful thinking but if we’re going to run the read-option/spread, Ewaliko sounds like an extremely attractive ‘option’ at QB. Few are faster and more explosive combined with better accuracy, but wth do I know? We had better figure out a way to get the ball in his hands though as he didn’t look natural while moonlighting at safety. Frankly returning kicks sounds like a no brainer to me.. Unless, his hands are suspect which could also explain why we haven’t seen the staff try him in the slot as yet.

  58. G-money July 30, 2014 10:57 pm

    Sad to hear about kirkwood.

Question: why didn’t he leave sooner to get better adjusted to his new school? Regardless of the redshirt requirement, it would seem in his best interest to have been working out with his new teammates.

Unless, is kirkwood leaving football in entirety? Too bad, he had a chance to be really good here. Way better than Trevor Davis who ended up at Cal; and finally appears ready to play this year.

    Ohh well, once a warrior..

  59. hatakeman July 30, 2014 11:22 pm

KITV announced it’s official Taz Stevenson is a Warrior and is eligible to play immediately. The picture keeps getting better and better.

  60. oneseason July 31, 2014 5:52 am

SA news article this morning says “UH fires Manoa Chancellor Apple” … are hires him as a tenured faculty with an annual salary of $299,000. Considering that he had a performance clause in his contract, it sure seems like the taxpayers are the ones getting the boot.

“University of Hawaii at Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple says he was forced out as head of the UH system’s flagship campus Wednesday, two years into his five-year appointment.

Apple said he was removed “for alleged unsatisfactory performance” in his job.”

“Apple was hired in May 2012 at a $439,008 annual salary under former UH President M.R.C. Greenwood, who recommended he be appointed to a five-year term through June 30, 2017, “subject each year to successful annual performance evaluations at the level of satisfactory or above.”

  61. A-House July 31, 2014 7:03 am

unfortunately for Apple, MRC is no longer his guardian angel – he would Chancellor if she was still Prez
