Game day: Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Norm Chow addressed the estimated 600 UH fans who attended today’s tailgate party:

It’s back to the future for the Rainbow Warriors as they face former players (Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo and offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper) and the triple-option offense.

UH’s goal: Stop Noah Copeland, a beast of a fullback.

Quarterback Keenan Reynolds is very good, too.

J.J. Unga of the Baltimore Ravens was at yesterday’s practice:

  14. wafan November 9, 2013 6:43 am

    Then . . . BINGO!

I hope the Warriors score a lot of bingos today, too.

  15. nanakuli November 9, 2013 6:49 am

Coach Chow needs to win. Another lost may mean 15,000 for retro night next week. I hope we see every trick in the book thrown at Navy today.

    Good morning everybody.

  20. oneseason November 9, 2013 7:16 am

Hoping for very few Rainbow Warrior runs up the middle. It was disappointing watching so many downs thrown away in the Colorado State game.

  21. Shoko November 9, 2013 7:19 am

I think today is the day. 😉

    Go Warriors!

  22. tom-warriornation November 9, 2013 7:20 am

GO WARRIORS! Hope you studied the game film when we beat Navy a few years ago; and stopped their option attack. We Believe!

  23. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 7:32 am

Just stuff the FB dive on the option, and the rest is manageable. Be aware of the deep ball because all option teams like the throw deep to keep defenses honest. I would play soft on the corners and don’t allow anything deep. Navy isn’t a good enough pass team to dink and dunk up the field like Fresno or SJSU, nor do they look to do so.

  24. UHfan808 November 9, 2013 7:40 am

Good game day morning, Tsai-kos and Lurk-ers! 🙂

  25. UHfan808 November 9, 2013 7:43 am

Hey, thanks for all the fantabulous pics, ST! Super good work! Super grrrreat shots! Hehe

Time to get ready for TV-gate! ‘See’ you all at the game!

  26. wasabi November 9, 2013 7:43 am

Good luck to the players today!

  27. LizKauai iPad November 9, 2013 7:47 am

    GO, RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  28. kev-1 November 9, 2013 8:00 am

Today is the day to stretch the field. Navy is going to run, run, run and control the clock the entire game. UH will need to rely on quick offensive scores if they want to keep up on the scoreboard. This won’t bode well for the defense, as they will get very little time to rest. I would rather have my defense on the field due to quick scores than for 3 and outs.

    GO (rainbow) WARRIORS!!!!

  29. Ipu Man November 9, 2013 8:02 am

Fill in all gaps. Just lay your body down…

  30. kev-1 November 9, 2013 8:05 am

No. Don’t just lay your body down. Tackle. Wrap up and tackle. Although, I get the innuendo, Ipu Man.

  31. kev-1 November 9, 2013 8:08 am

This time last year, we were wondering why Chow was sticking with Schroeder if we weren’t winning games, turnovers, 3 and outs, etc. I have been wondering that for about 3 weeks already. But, for some reason many have given him a pass. I don’t get it, but will ride my hopes on him again for another week. If he can’t get it done during the first half, I will be loudly calling for a change . . . for the rest of the season.

With that said, prove me wrong Sean Schroeder.

  32. RainboWarrior November 9, 2013 8:20 am

Going to the game today. Hopefully we’ll get our first W.
Hope to see all the other Hawaii fans

  33. Slugger November 9, 2013 8:24 am

    Good morning, gang!

    LET’S GO BOWS!
    LET’S GO BOWS!
    LET’S GO BOWS!

  34. Bryson November 9, 2013 8:42 am

Assignment football on defense will win or lose the game today,if there ever was a time for the defense to step up today is the day….what time is kickoff 9:30 or 10:30 our time?

  35. tommui November 9, 2013 8:56 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    GO BOWS!
    GO WAHINE!

And good luck and good passing, SS!

  36. kev-1 November 9, 2013 8:58 am

35 Papoloco . . . I respectfully disagree. I do think that SS is a leader and a good guy, but he has been given WAY more of an opportunity than either TG or IW, there is no arguing that. TG lost his job due to injury. Yes he started the season horribly, but was showing some (even if little) improvement, even with no confidence in his receivers. Let’s not forget that the WR’s were NOT making plays early in the year. They have proven that they can now, and that they need a QB with an arm.

Of course, this is just my view. People argue that TG is a bust. But really, what chance has he been given? You can’t excuse the frequent dead end drives, turnovers, etc. that are lead by SS because he throws a touchdown pass here and there. Can you honestly say that either TG or IW have been given that kind of chance? Have they been allowed to make mistake after mistake yet still get a chance to play? No. But SS has. That is why people think he is all we got.

I could be wrong, but that’s just what I think. I respect SS A LOT, as do I respect the view of those that think he should start. I just don’t agree. BUT, I will be the first to willingly eat crow.

  37. NYUHTx November 9, 2013 9:18 am

Didn’t SS lose his job to injury? Or was it to all the spin everyone was putting on TG? I would like to see TG starting because he needs the reps for next year but I think we need to get the win first and SS is probably the best bet for that.

Great seeing the pics of the guys in DC.

  38. NYUHTx November 9, 2013 9:18 am

  39. Stephen Tsai November 9, 2013 9:58 am

    It’s been a cool trip. I’ve learned a lot.
First time I was in D.C. was in the seventh grade.
Returned for a convention in 2004. But it was a convention, and I didn’t tour and I don’t remember much. But we all had a great time.

  40. kev-1 November 9, 2013 10:03 am

Let’s hope the team can use a little of the inspiration swelling from the foot of the Lincoln and MLK Jr. Memorials to fuel them to a win. It was very cool to see the pics of the team there yesterday.

  41. Stephen Tsai November 9, 2013 10:28 am

I knew MLK was a great man. I didn’t realize how great a writer he was.

  42. markazulu November 9, 2013 10:35 am

    Its game time

  43. sdbowfan November 9, 2013 10:42 am

    Three and out time…

  44. Shamen November 9, 2013 10:47 am

    [sigh] That didn’t take long.

  45. Maile Tsai–Russ November 9, 2013 10:48 am

    Another game, another immediate deficit.

  46. sdbowfan November 9, 2013 10:57 am

    embarrasing

  47. Shoko November 9, 2013 10:58 am

Can’t catch a break. Fumble on return and a missed field goal.

  48. markazulu November 9, 2013 10:59 am

Hawaii is moving on offense iosefa is a beast and the defense held but 1 turnover and we are down by 7

  49. oneseason November 9, 2013 11:00 am

#42 ST, I was much more impressed by the MLK memorial quotes than at FDR’s … “We must scrupulously guard the civil rights and civil liberties of all citizens, whatever their background. We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization.” … I kept looking for the “and sorry for that whole internment thing” addendum … http://www.flickr.com/photos/dscottmcleod/9370768112/

  50. Shoko November 9, 2013 11:01 am

Yeah, Iosefa obviously sorely missed in the run game.

  51. Shamen November 9, 2013 11:05 am

Missed 36 yard FG? c’mon, man

  52. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 11:07 am

King muffs a punt and leads to Navy TD… Missed chip shot FG by Hadden.

Such is life with a team that doesn’t know how to win…

Safe to say UH’s toughest opponent this year has been themselves. Unforced turnovers, dropped passes, bad penalties, missed FGs, and blown coverages.

Oh god, just saw, “What does the Fox say?” Music video for 1st time….

  53. sdbowfan November 9, 2013 11:08 am

I miss when they opposing coaches used to be asked the question “How do you expect to stop Hawaii’s offense?”

  54. Dan-O November 9, 2013 11:08 am

So….do we blame the coaches for a dropped punt return, poor hold on FG, missed FG?

  55. Shamen November 9, 2013 11:12 am

53 & 55: Maybe the team is (subconsciously?) telling us with their miscues that they want Chow GONE

  56. markazulu November 9, 2013 11:19 am

They are playing great today offense moving and defense playing well

  57. All Nuha Already November 9, 2013 11:20 am

Is it me, or has it gone way past sad, pathetic, and / or unfortunate, straight to embarrassing … ?

  58. Dan-O November 9, 2013 11:21 am

56….please, don’t think so. But, boy have we missed Iosefa. More than his running, take a close look at his pass blocking

  59. 3-Prong November 9, 2013 11:23 am

Iosepha’s blocking is also helping. We need 7 bad.

    Today IS the day.

  60. Shoko November 9, 2013 11:23 am

    Good grief.

  61. 3-Prong November 9, 2013 11:23 am

    What?

  62. markazulu November 9, 2013 11:23 am

They need to put it in the endzone

  63. Dan-O November 9, 2013 11:24 am

56…ok, maybe Hadden wants Chow gone

  64. 3-Prong November 9, 2013 11:24 am

Wasn’t the laces on that one.

  65. Maile Tsai–Russ November 9, 2013 11:25 am

FORGET THE FGs!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go for the end zone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hadden is killing us.

  66. 3-Prong November 9, 2013 11:25 am

Defense, please show them how to score.

  67. Dan-O November 9, 2013 11:25 am

Well…at least there will be no decision-making on 4th downs. We going for everything now

  68. Shoko November 9, 2013 11:26 am

I think its mental. Very uncharacteristic of Hadden missing two in a row.

  69. Da Punchbowl Kid November 9, 2013 11:27 am

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  70. 3-Prong November 9, 2013 11:27 am

Stuff the fullback, force pitch, hit qb hard, db finish it….repeat.

  71. Shamen November 9, 2013 11:28 am

Mental, as in…I think if I kill the team’s morale with another missed FG, we’ll lose again and Chow will get the boot?

  72. Shoko November 9, 2013 11:30 am

    Purely speculative.

  73. Inyoface November 9, 2013 11:32 am

    Lose money

  74. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 11:34 am

    Do UH bring another kicker?

Pretty sure no more FG attempts the rest of way.

  75. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 11:35 am

    “Did…”

  81. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 11:38 am

  83. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 11:45 am

Breakdown on 3rd & long after two good defensive plays….. seen this way too much this year.

  84. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 11:50 am

4 critical plays against UH already… There are usually 6-8 critical plays per game that swing the game one way or another. Teams on wrong end of this are usually the losers.

    1. Muffed PR
    2. Botched FG
    3. Missed FG
    4. give up 78yd run on 3rd & long

UH cannot give up anymore of this big plays or it’ll be a loss.

  85. Shoko November 9, 2013 11:50 am

    Can’t seem to stop Iosefa.

  86. Shoko November 9, 2013 11:52 am

    TD Warriors!

  87. wafan November 9, 2013 11:53 am

    Whoo-hoo, again!

  88. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 11:53 am

  89. Slugger November 9, 2013 11:54 am

    GO GO BOWS!
    LET’S GO BOWS!

  90. Tarheel warrior November 9, 2013 11:54 am

Joey is a beast, over 100 yards rushing.

  91. Jonj November 9, 2013 11:58 am

Mack’s shitty recruiting gave us iosefa! Kids a beast!

  92. Stephen Tsai November 9, 2013 11:59 am

Yep. Schroeder is 15 of 16 for 135 yards. Iosefa is first 100-yard UH rusher this season.
    Iosefa makes you coach better.

  93. Shoko November 9, 2013 12:01 pm

Alright. Continue to force Navy to respect the run in the second half.

  94. markazulu November 9, 2013 12:03 pm

    Iosefa is gashing navy

  95. Whats up November 9, 2013 12:03 pm

Losing Scott Harding is huge but Joey Iosefa is a beast! Hopefully the freshman RB’s are watching how is Joey finding the holes and burst though them and not go down with arm tackles. The boys are playing some football today, the defense showed up big time. Tyler Hadden is missing way to many FG this season, something needs to be fixed about the FG attempts.

  96. All Nuha Already November 9, 2013 12:04 pm

Wow, could THIS be the day and shock us all….?

  97. Shamen November 9, 2013 12:05 pm

Joey is a difference-maker, no doubt. Glad his foot issue finally got sorted out.

  98. Stephen Tsai November 9, 2013 12:06 pm

Give Marrell Jackson credit. He’s playing the option one-handed.

  99. Dan-O November 9, 2013 12:09 pm

Give O-line, WR and TE some love too….good run blocking. Langkilde as FB looking good too.

  100. 3-Prong November 9, 2013 12:10 pm

    You guys still get signal?

  107. gobows November 9, 2013 12:30 pm

tape it up and send that zebra back in the game

  108. Shoko November 9, 2013 12:32 pm

That roughing the passer call was crucial in stopping Navy on that drive.

  109. Inyoface November 9, 2013 12:32 pm

That was karma for a bad call! Lol

  110. Buffoman November 9, 2013 12:33 pm

    We handed them that one.

  111. Inyoface November 9, 2013 12:38 pm

    What was that?

  112. Maile Tsai–Russ November 9, 2013 12:39 pm

Our kicking game is awful today. Guzman’s punts are pathetic.

  113. Whats up November 9, 2013 12:39 pm

Here goes Hawaii and the slow start in the 3rd quarter, again!

  114. gobows November 9, 2013 12:39 pm

what the hell is wrong with the punter? 25 yard average, that sucks.

  115. Buffoman November 9, 2013 12:39 pm

  169. sdbowfan November 9, 2013 1:56 pm

The announcer hit the nail on the head when he said “This team is a reflection of the head coach”

  170. Jonj November 9, 2013 1:56 pm

Who cares about the 3rd qt?!?! Most stupid comment of the night. Hard fought game but not good enough

  171. Maile Tsai–Russ November 9, 2013 1:56 pm

    Awful special teams today:
    Fumbled punt return
    2 missed short FGs
    27 yd avg on punts
    Fumbled KR

Demo needs to give some other people a chance to produce.

  172. Marleysdad November 9, 2013 1:57 pm

What a waste of a great game by Schroeder & Iosefa.

  173. Shoko November 9, 2013 1:57 pm

Oh well, be back for the basketball game tonight.

  174. Babo November 9, 2013 1:58 pm

Now will you fire Chow? Please?

  175. Inyoface November 9, 2013 1:59 pm

Special teams and that call on yap, critical.

  176. Jonj November 9, 2013 2:01 pm

Scott Harding injury lost the game! Maybe should jus make him the pun returner and punter

  177. Marleysdad November 9, 2013 2:01 pm

Those retro uni’s are horrendous. GHEY!!!

UH is now on a 0-21 streak as the “Rainbows”

    Unicorns & cupcakes……

  178. gobows November 9, 2013 2:02 pm

joey needed 1 moa carry. another failure.

  179. Marleysdad November 9, 2013 2:03 pm

178, Yap lost the game. Not not having Harding.

  180. obachan November 9, 2013 2:03 pm

    Chow: “Our boys played hard.”

  181. Jonj November 9, 2013 2:05 pm

Marleys dad u r quick to point fingers! Chow lost the game in the 3rd. Plain an simple

  182. Marleysdad November 9, 2013 2:06 pm

    Singlehandedly responsible for 21 points.

Roughing the passer 3 seconds after he threw the ball on the pick.

2 missed backfield tackles on 3rd down on scoring drives.

  183. Marleysdad November 9, 2013 2:07 pm

    Aren’t we all pointing fingers?

  184. gobows November 9, 2013 2:08 pm

    rollover baby, 5 more years.

  185. Jonj November 9, 2013 2:09 pm

Then what about hadden or Donnie king fumble or Brendan Daley offsides or Moses Samoa couple offsides

  186. Jonj November 9, 2013 2:12 pm

I think numba 1 son is to blame for the lose. Bachi! Haha

  187. My take November 9, 2013 2:18 pm

That many mistakes is a reflection of the coaches. Just weak coaching. But I still blame the search committee. It’s on them!

  188. obachan November 9, 2013 2:22 pm

188 – Please don’t blame my good boy Ichiro.

  189. gobows November 9, 2013 2:26 pm

#190 see #104 its his fault for sure.

  190. gobows November 9, 2013 2:34 pm

wahinebb looking awful at asu trail 71-29.

  191. Numba 1 Son November 9, 2013 2:37 pm

Too much superstition. However, I guarentee that if we play like this the rest of the season we will win the rest of our games. Ride Iosefa till he drops!!

  192. Wes'side Warrior November 9, 2013 2:40 pm

    Howzit, Gang!

Dang it! Just got back in and was hoping for a positive outcome to the game. I know we all want a win badly, but I’m sure the players and coaches want to get this monkey off of their back as soon as possible too.

Stick with it, guys. Put it all together and close out the season on a positive streak. CAN!

  193. Maile Tsai–Russ November 9, 2013 2:41 pm

Yeah #104 AND 142. If I can’t blame Chow, I gotta blame someone else.

  194. RainbowCliff November 9, 2013 2:49 pm

Tough lost for the Rainbow Warriors as they did play hard BUT Navy had too many weapons one of them being a SUPERB disciplinary team with knowing their strengths offensively and defensively as their quarterback showed how the game is played as he was just AWESOME running and throwing the football and making BIG plays when it was needed.

“Rainbow” name has NOTHING to do with it as you can’t make MENTAL mistakes defensively along with your special teams, missed field goals may be one I can understand but the 2nd NO EXCUSE as those were CRITICAL points that was needed early in the game as 14 should of been 20 !

The 3RD quarter seems to be the MAJOR problem for this team as being outscored and outplayed after 9 games into the season falls on coaches and players as the talent Hawaii has is good enough to WIN but when losing game after game after game becomes a MENTAL issue as just THREE games are left with Wyoming, San Diego State and Army are not going to be easy.

On the positive side Schroeder played well at quarterback but I was so impress with JOEY, man he reminds me of Larry Csonka as I now understand what so many of you were telling me about him and IF he was healthy the entire season the running game would of been establish from the get go not how it was for the last 8 games “INCONSISTENT or non existance. Joey is plain and simple a BEAST as I hope he remains healthy for the last 3 games and have a GREAT injury free senior season !

Finally, you can’t WIN playing catch up and when you do need more CREATIVITY in plays as I KNEW what was coming next as the team offense is so PREDICTABLE as throwing the BOMB at any time was never attempted as you have to STRETCH the defense out because you can go so far with bubble screens and tail back U as good TEAMS will figure you out and make adjustments. PENALTIES are just dumb especially in key situations which hurt Hawaii badly when they had Navy 3 and out up comes roughing the quarterback which gives them new life and what happen TOUCHDOWN !

The boys competed but moral victories don’t add up to NOTHING as it takes FOUR error less quarters from the beginning to the end as the Warriors have THREE games left to play a COMPLETE game if not then the inevitable will happen as that will be a SAD day in Hawaii football history. Safe travels for the team coming back as Chow stated “WE WILL NOT QUIT” as I won’t QUIT either !

Let’s Go Bows BEAT who ever !

  195. Numba 1 Son November 9, 2013 2:50 pm

    Plus.. I beat the spread!

  196. 3-Prong November 9, 2013 3:25 pm

Putting things in perspective, although we did not come out with wins on the trip, I’m sure the boys will always remember a great experience.

Let’s Go Bows. We Get ‘Em Next Week!

  197. Inyoface November 9, 2013 3:26 pm

I see some light and grit in this team but we have to recruit defensive guys highly for the offense we run. You need a stout defense with depth to play with the pro offense.

  198. Inyoface November 9, 2013 3:28 pm

    *pro-style

  199. 3-Prong November 9, 2013 3:30 pm

    Re: Being a fan

The boys haven’t shown any quit in them. Can you say the same about yourself? You are being tested too.

  200. Boya_jr November 9, 2013 3:33 pm

I started watching in the 4th quarter. We didn’t get rolled. The espn radio feed wasn’t working well. Too much buffering. My favorite player Iosefa is back! I missed seeing him run over people in the secondary. Makes me smile. Reminds me of 2011. We’re going to win this season.

  201. Inyoface November 9, 2013 3:37 pm

The obl thing is we don’t have Schroeder next year, so what’s next.

  202. Inyoface November 9, 2013 3:38 pm

    *only

  203. kapakahi November 9, 2013 3:56 pm

Can’t say that I blame JGW for being frustrated at the end of the game.

Just hoping that he’s not getting discouraged too.

  204. kev-1 November 9, 2013 4:06 pm

Marleysdad . . . watch it again. That was a bad call on the roughing the passer by Yap. You are fricken kidding me if you are going to put the game on him. That is the biggest load of c__p.

  205. kev-1 November 9, 2013 4:08 pm

We were down by 14 at two separate occasions during the game where I think Chow thought we were up by 14 so he decided to try and run out the clock with Iosefa.

The kid had a great game, but you don’t ride your RB when you need quick scores. STUPID.

  206. kev-1 November 9, 2013 4:08 pm

Also, SS had an efficient game. Far from great.

  207. kev-1 November 9, 2013 4:10 pm

    Well, there’s always basketball.

  208. kev-1 November 9, 2013 4:14 pm

Lastly, while Navy runs their offense really well, I find it to be THE MOST BORING type of offense to watch. Run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, pass, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, . . . . EXCITING!!!!!

  209. Numba 1 Son November 9, 2013 4:18 pm

I agree. Navy’s offense is boring. But it wins with the players they have. Rather have wins than excitement. Especially this year…

  210. kev-1 November 9, 2013 4:23 pm

Yeah, I’d rather have wins too. But I really am not clamoring for a return to the option offense.

  211. Maile Tsai–Russ November 9, 2013 4:23 pm

210: Yeah, but at least they’re not O-for-2013.

  212. kev-1 November 9, 2013 4:28 pm

213 . . . Now that is a creative name. Good one. And you’re right.

  213. Old Diver November 9, 2013 4:29 pm

We are in the second half of the season filled with weak and mediocre opponents which was suppose to be Chow’s ticket to a bowl game. The bar has been lowered to; hopefully the team can win one game this season. Lowering the bar and claiming improvement is mere delusion.

  214. oneseason November 9, 2013 4:36 pm

  215. papajoe2 November 9, 2013 4:47 pm

When Chow came on last year, I thought he got rid of some players and instilled discipline on the team. I think they lost it with some ill timed penalties. I think the commentators said that last week against Notre Dame, Navy had only 1 or 0 penalties. I know its easier to call holding on a passing team than a running team, but where is the discipline this year?

  216. papajoe2 November 9, 2013 4:51 pm

#216 oneseason~ Good stats but I don’t understand what you mean by “Points Needed for Bowl Game.” Can you explain please?

  217. Numba 1 Son November 9, 2013 4:57 pm

Not too many negative comments on this blog today as opposed to recent memory. I think the trolls know what’s going to happen next week…..WE WIN!!!

  218. papajoe2 November 9, 2013 5:05 pm

I always thought you needed a 50% or better record to go to a bowl.

  219. oneseason November 9, 2013 5:21 pm

#218 papajoe2 ~ I should have written “Minimum additional points needed to qualify for a Bowl Game”. For 2009 and 2011, the record was 6-7 and UH lost games by only 1 point, so an extra 2 points would have resulted in a 7-6 season. For 2012, UH was 3-9, so would have had to win 3 more games. The three games that were the closest were against New Mexico (23-35), Air Force (7-21) and Colorado State (27-42), where 13, 15, and 16 points would have been needed for wins (for a total of 44). It is supposed to combine margin of loss with the win-loss record.

  220. kev-1 November 9, 2013 5:31 pm

That could possibly be the most meaningless stat I have ever heard of. No offense.

  221. kev-1 November 9, 2013 5:39 pm

Seriously. Our team is 0-9. 17 points away from a bowl game??? How about 1 win away from . . . well, a win?

  222. oneseason November 9, 2013 5:43 pm

#223. kev-1 … Could be. I was looking for a statistic that would help differentiate marginally bad versus abysmal seasons. It seemed to accomplish that, but I need to get around to adding some of the earlier seasons of infamy.

  223. alwaysarainbow November 9, 2013 5:48 pm

Anyone know what was wrong with the ESPN Honolulu internet broadcast?

  224. oneseason November 9, 2013 5:51 pm

#224. Yeah, we lost to UNLV 37-39, Fresno St 37-42, and CSU 28-35. Those were the 3 closest losses so far. So 17 points would give us 3 wins. Assuming we win the next 3 games (not something I would expect), those 17 points plus the 3 wins would make UH bowl eligible. The point is that, with the exception of the 2000 season under June Jones, and 2012/2013, UH has either gotten to a bowl or just missed it by a small margin.

  225. kev-1 November 9, 2013 5:57 pm

    oneseason,

I understand what you are doing with the stats. But it is wins that dictate bowl games, not points. Earlier in the season, I was very optimistic that we were losing some very close games. But you have to admit that we are in the part of our schedule where those close losses should have meant wins over the last several weeks. Instead, we have regressed (mostly defensively).

  226. kev-1 November 9, 2013 5:58 pm

An 0-12 season is abysmal, regardless of how many points you lost by. This team will go 0-12. They don’t know how to win. Unfortunately, I believe that Chow has taught this team how to lose.

  227. oneseason November 9, 2013 6:11 pm

    kev-1,

Yes, wins are definitely the only way to become bowl eligible. And I know that one statistic cannot capture a season’s challenges and successes. I was very optimistic last year after seeing the team dominate Lamar, but reality returned the next week. I would like to think a win against Army is not out of the question. However, the beginning of 2014, with UW, Oregon State, and even Colorado, looks extremely challenging no matter how optimistic I try to be.

  228. Kanole November 9, 2013 6:12 pm

The defense is terrible. Not only today. Off sides, roughing the passer, no assignment responsibility for the triple option. They made Navy look like the best team in the nation today. Chow got to do something. It makes him look bad.

  229. kev-1 November 9, 2013 6:26 pm

    oneseason,

We will be optimistic next year. No matter how frustrated I am now as a fan, I am always optimistic going into the year. I was also extremely optimistic going into this year.

Here again is why I suggest a different QB play instead of SS. One who will actually play next year. Because reality is, that is what we are playing for at this point. Yeah, maybe SS gives the team the best chance to win (although I don’t really buy that), but that is this year.

  230. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 9, 2013 6:37 pm

The WTF moment of the game for me was watching them play with ZERO urgency with about 5 minutes left in the game.

We go hurry whenever they hell we want, yet when we are 2 scores down with time ticking away, we play as though we are in the lead. I no can believe.

  231. erich November 9, 2013 7:07 pm

“Not too many negative comments on this blog today as opposed to recent memory. I think the trolls know what’s going to happen next week…..WE WIN!!!”

Or people have just stopped paying attention and are moving on to other things. Just like no one complains about a winless minor sport team.

Which is the big problem. People don’t want to read or think anymore about UH football anymore under Chow. More and more, people are tuning out UH football and they’re not gonna come back with Chow at the helm.

  232. Former UH Athlete November 9, 2013 7:09 pm

I’m still optimistic also for next year. The most talented defensive players on roster (JGW, Jackson, Yap, Samia) are back for their 3rd year of starting… That’s always a good thing. NeQuan has good talent but is inconsistent. Kennedy will be ready for full time duty, Malepai is back, and more DLinemen becoming eligible (Castro, Moana, Meffy).

Of course nobody expected UH to be winless, but preseason, I thought it would be a stretch to make 6 wins, especially when the schedule was released and it was front loaded with tough games.

Biggest concern for 2014 is obvious, OLine play and if Graham or Woosley can step up and take the reigns at QB. I’m doubting Tuileta will make an immediate impact. He’s a much better VB player than FB.

The team shows their potential in spurts but they just aren’t consistent enough to get a W. It’s been the self inflicted wounds that deflates the team when things are going well. Today it was a muffed punt return, then missed chip shot FGs by Hadden after quality drives. Then giving up a huge run on 3rd & 10 when Navy isn’t trying to convert by running a base run play. Then a bonehead roughing the passer that leads to Navy TD after halftime.

UH has been able to create a lot of good plays, but the untimely mistakes erase any good they did. That’s the frustrating part of this season

  233. WarriorFan November 9, 2013 7:13 pm

Today’s game had its bright spots. Joey Iosefa showed how much the team needed his talents.

We were in the game until the third quarter. We just can’t seem to adjust schemes or we lose any momentum. Halftime seems to be the doom of the team. Makes you wonder what goes on in that locker room during the half.

    Go Rainbow Warriors!

  234. Numba 1 Son November 9, 2013 8:24 pm

We are not going 0-12 this year. This game shows that the light went on for the palyers – at least on offense. A healthy Iosefa and Chow’s run 1st to set up pass worked exponentially. Having said that going 3-9 (I think they’ll win out) is nothing to brag about. But—if they continue to play like they did today for they’ll be ok.

  235. NorthShoreFan November 9, 2013 8:25 pm

Wasn’t able to watch or listen to the game today. Left the broadcast 14-14 tie. Was thinking this is the game. but total disappointment when I heard the final.
Reading all the comments/analysis tonight and me thinks discipline might be the problem. Not being able to carry out assignments correctly, mental lapses, too many big plays have got to be because of miss assignments.
How do you correct over pursuit, out of position, miss assignments etc.
Seems we have the horses to get us in the win column but every game it’s something else or someone else who make crucial mistakes. Winning football games really come down to the small things.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  236. Numba 1 Son November 9, 2013 8:34 pm

That very last neutral zone penalty killed us. Gave them a first down. Instead od 3rd and four, the five yard penalty gave them a first down. Game over whether they scored or not.

  237. nanakuli November 9, 2013 8:47 pm

Chow needs experienced coaches next year. The players seem good, but are inconsistent due to young coaches learning on the job (except Demo). I wonder if Aaron Price would have made a difference?
