Game day: Michigan

ANN ARBOR — The day started with a glitch. Only two of the four buses scheduled to pick up the Warriors and their supporters showed up at the hotel. They had to go in two shifts: Team first, then the supporters.

Other than that, it’s been a wonderful game day: Nice weather, nice stadium workers, and really friendly Michigan fans.

  4. cappie the dog September 3, 2016 5:58 am

    Nice win for Paul Johnson.

    Luck of the Irish.

    Lou Holtz was here.

    A good omen?

If Hawaii has a lead after the 1st quarter, I’ll be satisfied.

  5. Moocher September 3, 2016 6:01 am

Steady boys,,take a deep breath,,we are ok. D line is getting a nice push.

  11. Boolakanaka September 3, 2016 6:17 am

Refs missed a clip on that screen…

  12. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 6:19 am

    Is JGW playing?

  13. z September 3, 2016 6:22 am

No pass rush. Our backs can’t stay with their receivers.

  14. Rodney September 3, 2016 6:23 am

    Oh my!!!!
    BC sucks!

  15. z September 3, 2016 6:23 am

    Ikaika needs to settle down.

  16. Rodney September 3, 2016 6:26 am

    Oh my!!
    BC really sucks!!!

  17. HawaiiMongoose September 3, 2016 6:29 am

Boola, that clip was right in front of the ref and he looked the other way. Michigan should have been punting, not scoring a TD.

  18. HawaiiMongoose September 3, 2016 6:30 am

At least they flagged the clip on the punt return.

  19. Inyoface September 3, 2016 6:32 am

What happen to Penitito? Talk about thin!

  20. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 6:37 am

Yikes… We can’t seem to get anything going on offense… And can’t stop anything on D… I hope we can turn it around…

  21. Rodney September 3, 2016 6:44 am

    Who are we running behind
    RT or LT ?
    What formation is Michigan
    D in?
    BC please describe?

  22. Buffoman September 3, 2016 6:45 am

We actually look worse than our outings to Ohio State and Wisconsin. I did not think we could. Maybe Michigan is just better than those teams were. Either way it just shows the difference between the haves and have nots. BTW, special team play still looks bad.

  23. Rodney September 3, 2016 6:50 am

    Bc
Did we blitz on that TD
    Oh my you suck!!

  24. Rodney September 3, 2016 6:52 am

Left to right who is on our D line? Are 3-4 2 Hugh?

  25. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 6:55 am

Yikes… I could have picked that off… He was staring the receiver down forever!

  26. z September 3, 2016 6:55 am

Late throw by Woolsey staring down the receiver equals touchdown Michigan.

  27. Moocher September 3, 2016 6:55 am

Geez, could you have locked on and telegraphed that anymore?

  28. Inyoface September 3, 2016 6:56 am

Put in Dru Brown or AZ

  29. Moocher September 3, 2016 6:58 am

Running plays only…3 plays and out no matter, just get that clock going to speed up the game.

  30. Buffoman September 3, 2016 6:58 am

It’s bad when we could see that pick coming before the throw. That stare down was like what happens in pre fight weigh ins for fights.

  31. Whats up September 3, 2016 6:58 am

Woolsey back, pick 6…. time for Rolo to bench Woosley and put in Zwalhen at QB. Might as well get Zwalhen some live game rep for the future.

  32. Rodney September 3, 2016 6:59 am

    AZ start warming up?
    What’s going on with slant
    route? Should we be double
    move our route?
    Were is Isaiah Bernard?

  33. 808warrior September 3, 2016 6:59 am

    Come on show some pride!

  34. oneseason September 3, 2016 6:59 am

When the commentators commented that the Michigan coaching staff saw something special in one of their 3 star freshman recruits and were playing him, I had to laugh. They seem like great guys and all, but they seemed oblivious that 3 star recruits are not the bottom of the barrel for a lot of team. The team isn’t quitting. Let’s Go Bows!

  35. Rodney September 3, 2016 7:02 am

    Punt the ball!

  36. 808warrior September 3, 2016 7:02 am

    Go for it!

  37. Buffoman September 3, 2016 7:16 am

Tackling is still needs work. Offense has been dominated by Michigan’s defense. I was hoping to a better showing, but you have to admit that Michigan is formidable.

  38. Markazulu September 3, 2016 7:16 am

That team speed of Michigan is just wow.

  39. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 7:17 am

Anyone else reminded of the USC game in 2012?

  40. 808warrior September 3, 2016 7:20 am

Great coaching opportunity for the team. Learn from the game and move on. Another day another game! Go warriors keep playing.

  41. Whats up September 3, 2016 7:20 am

I expected the porous Hawaii defense to stink it up today but the offense is looking like Chow is calling the plays with the same old inconsistent QB play by Woolsey. I had low expectations this season with a new coaching change but wow Rolo. Come on bench Woolsey and think of the future at QB.

Hopefully Michigan puts in it’s 4th string team or Hawaii might loss by 70 points.

  42. OCWarrior September 3, 2016 7:26 am

Not too surprised, I think Michigan is for real and I think they will make the playoffs this year. Harbaugh is arguably one of the best coaches in football. Won at every level (USD, Stanford, 49ers, and UM, with other coaches players).

  43. OCWarrior September 3, 2016 7:28 am

Team not quitting and now moving on offense. Something last year’s team could not do against Ohio St and Wisconsin even with backups in the game.

  44. H-Man September 3, 2016 7:35 am

    Sorry, Ikaika is being Ikaika.

  45. Inyoface September 3, 2016 7:37 am

More like the Florida game of 08

  46. SteveM September 3, 2016 7:43 am

    Ouch.
But good drive before the half. Building and I have more hope for the season than last year.

  47. oneseason September 3, 2016 7:53 am

I would expect UH Football under coach Rolovich and staff will exceed the conference win total of 4 from the last 4 seasons. I bet Michigan wasn’t happy to see UH move the ball at the end of the second half. It will be interesting to see how both coaching staffs adjust UH offense vs Michigan defense.

    UH conference wins
    2012 … 1
    2013 … 0
    2014 … 3
    2015 … 0

  48. burro sabio September 3, 2016 8:02 am

It’s not the QB. Speed kills.

The replay official had Michigan -33 at the half.

  49. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 8:06 am

Woosley is out. Drew Brown in as UH qb…

  50. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 8:12 am

Woosely shoulder is being looked at.
Dru is transfer from san Mateo.
I would have preferred Aaron Z.

  51. oneseason September 3, 2016 8:13 am

Keeping Woosley from being injured in the 2nd half makes sense to me.

  52. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 8:14 am

    🙁 interception td by Michigun…

  53. Inyoface September 3, 2016 8:15 am

    This is embarrassing!

  54. z September 3, 2016 8:15 am

Our qbs got 2 passing tds so far.

  55. Hawaii808 September 3, 2016 8:15 am

Might as well go to the next QB

  56. Whats up September 3, 2016 8:15 am

Put in QB Aaron Zwalhen please, Rolo.

  57. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 8:16 am

Ban on alcohol at Mich stadium.
    Nice.

  58. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 8:18 am

    Inyoface,
The Florida game—Yeah, that’s a good comparison… Hopefully the new QB will come in move the ball a bit…

  59. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 8:30 am

Little Saint Just not enough… fifth down.

  60. Inyoface September 3, 2016 8:30 am

    Dru Brown movin the chains

  61. Warrior Dave September 3, 2016 8:30 am

    Terrible 4th down play call.

  62. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 8:33 am

So far, I think the Play of the Day for UH is
UH interception on Mich’s first pass attempt.

  63. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 8:38 am

Do we have anyone that can stop the run? Our D-Line is so thin…

  64. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 8:40 am

    Yea, 4th quarter mercifully cometh…
Still I am enjoying UH effort. 🙂

  65. 808warrior September 3, 2016 8:43 am

The other UH is beating Okalahoma.

  66. Inyoface September 3, 2016 8:43 am

Can we score a point in the Midwest?

  67. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 8:47 am

    Well, yes… 🙂

  68. Whats up September 3, 2016 8:48 am

Sometimes I think Chow is up in the booth calling the plays, all the run dive plays up the middle is bring back bad memories.

  69. H-Man September 3, 2016 8:49 am

Yeah, first points against Big 10 powers in two seasons !! Attaway to go Rigo !!! Rolo has broken the goose egg.

  70. Inyoface September 3, 2016 8:57 am

QB competition should open back up.

  71. 3-Prong September 3, 2016 9:01 am

Go Bows. Heads Up. Finish Strong.

  72. kahuna September 3, 2016 9:01 am

I think going forward …..Brown should be our starter and here’s why. He just present more problems for opponent. He is said to be an accurate passer. He also has more athletic ability and speed than Wooslsey. He just lack game reps and experience. Ikaika had his chances for 5 years already. He should be way ahead of what he is showing now. Time to plan for the future. Give Brown more reps.

  73. H-Man September 3, 2016 9:02 am

Jeezy was right. Dru Brown is or should be the starting quarterback.

  74. OCWarrior September 3, 2016 9:11 am

The last time we went to the state of Michigan (Michigan St) early in the season and lost, we at least found our starting QB, Colt Brennan. I think that happened again, and yes, Jeezy called it awhile ago. I also think we should start Lakalaka and use St Juste as the change of pace.

  75. oneseason September 3, 2016 9:12 am

That was a nice throw by Mr. Brown.

  76. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 9:13 am

I don’t know if Brown is the right guy yet. Woolsey was playing against the first team defense of probably the top team in the country. You can’t blame him too much… He did perform against Cal…

  77. H-Man September 3, 2016 9:13 am

South Alabama, remember those guys? They’re on the verge of beating Mississippi St 21-20 with 57 seconds left in the game. Hope they can hold on for the W.

  78. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 9:20 am

Did Michigan even get to fourth down in the entire game?

  79. Whats up September 3, 2016 9:20 am

Got to give to the ESPN commentators they do understand Hawaii high school football and the challenges University of Hawaii Football faces in recruiting. They also understand that June Jones worked miracles in Hawaii Football. I hope Matlin didn’t make a mistake in hiring Rolo over June Jones, only time will tell. QB Dru Brown does have the great mobility and a good arm, I would take him over Woolsey any day.

  80. Nanakuli September 3, 2016 9:21 am

Only 19,000 coming to our home opener next week. Lots of parking to tailgate before watching our first win.

  81. Markazulu September 3, 2016 9:26 am

If im not mistaken warriorNY they did once but there was a penalty that gave them a first down.

  82. Rodney September 3, 2016 9:26 am

    Oh well
    Let’s get the next one.
    Imua Bows

  83. Buffoman September 3, 2016 9:28 am

It would have been good to have AZ see some playing time when the game was out of reach, as Michigan did with their qbs. Also good for recruiting.

  84. kahuna September 3, 2016 9:30 am

The word I think best describe Brown is “POTENTIAL”. If you have a starter that is a career below 50% passer and an up and coming who has the physical tools…who would you pick? It was said that this offense supposed to be a better fit for Woolsey but I honestly don’t see any great improvement. Woolsey still predominately look right and throw right almost all the time. We have Ursua on the left and he is being taken out of the game if the Qb doesn’t at least glance that way.

  85. Inyoface September 3, 2016 9:33 am

Not sure why Rolo doesn’t just call the plays like June did

  86. Manoa Mist September 3, 2016 9:34 am

When all the laughter died in sorrow. Ikaika has had his chance. Let somebody else try. That’s all I’m saying. But Hawaii sucks because we have no D-Line. Two years already. We no more nothing.

  87. Rodney September 3, 2016 9:36 am

    What happen to the pistol?
    Our TE?
    Not sure of our 3-4?
    Imua bows!

  88. Rodney September 3, 2016 9:38 am

    Wonder what Qb dru
    would of done against
    Cal?
Maybe we have a Qb competition?

  89. oneseason September 3, 2016 9:39 am

Holy heck … 110,222 in attendance … that sounds pretty close to last season’s total
    http://www.mgoblue.com/gametracker/launch/gt_mfootbl.html?event=1403113&school=mich&sport=mfootbl&camefrom=&startschool=&

  90. Boolakanaka September 3, 2016 9:40 am

While that was painful, I think we found a more fluid and dynamic QB. IW is just so myopic in his reads, that he basically cancels 1/3 to 1/2 of the playing field–he also appears, for whatever reason, very robotic. So, yes, Jeezy made a good early call….

  91. Inyoface September 3, 2016 9:55 am

Houston seems to be the next mid major entering big time football ala tcu, Baylor, Boise st.

  92. Inyoface September 3, 2016 9:56 am

Dru Brown brings a Russell Wilson aspect to the game.

  93. Willie September 3, 2016 9:58 am

OK! Nuff already, #11 is NOT the answer at QB! TD to INT ratio abismall, completion percentage under 50% awful and these are his stats to date for all games played as a Warrior. Stares down his 1st option, not able to pick up secondary receivers, throw more wounded ducks than a flock of ducks and poor touch. #11 has that so bad “happy feet” syndrome. If the team is going to build for the future, Rolo please make the change now with a lot of games to go. He said from the start, he will make the tough decisions to let the best play, regardless of class or being a newcomer. Yes Rolo recruited him, he had his chance, now time to move on in the best interest of the team.

  94. warriorfan September 3, 2016 10:08 am

Never expected coming close today but there are some things that are clear:
1)another major embrassment on national TV, good God its getting hard to stomach.
2)Chow left us with no talent to even compete with higher quality teams, it remains to be seen if we can even compete in the conference
3)agree with previous guy, this offense looks like Chow is calling the plays, why is Rolo letting Smith call the plays? Where is the run-n-shoot Rolo said we are going to start seeing again? Love to hear Rolo answer these questions……
4)at least Rolo has them playing hard through 4 quarters and they aren’t quitting..
5)Woosley is not the answer, he has had his chance, please play somebody different, he has reached his ceiling and his record is 4-17, pull the plug!!!!

Lets get a win and some confidence next week, Go Warriors

  95. Old Diver September 3, 2016 10:15 am

    Looking forward to next week.

  96. Coach DB September 3, 2016 10:45 am

When your down over 50 points in the second half and you have no chance to win the game, GET THE SECOND TEAM SOME REPS especially on defense!!! Get these young guys some reps in the BIG VENUES so that the Mountain West will be a cake walk. Coach Lemp you missed a golden opportunity to get them ALL READY, were gonna need ALL HANDS ON DECK to turn this thing around!!!

  97. Coach DB September 3, 2016 10:51 am

Michigan had their 3rd string in today getting them some game experience. Gotta start developing these young guys, change the culture of it’s ok to loose NOW!!!

  98. Jonj September 3, 2016 10:54 am

Man im hearing the same people calling for IW head that called for bryant moniz to b benched in his first year and the same dudes who called for mack to be fired. U guys r all premature! IW as soon as he had time and WRs open he made the throws. With IW the playbook is open. We saw vanilla becuz dre brown knows vanilla! This is michigan we talking about… a team thet talking as contenders. Enough already! Players family n friends read these blogs

  99. Inyoface September 3, 2016 11:26 am

I don’t remember people wanting moniz benched his first year, he was money from the start. But then again I don’t think I was on this blog back then.

  100. Willie September 3, 2016 11:32 am

Got a glimpse of Dave Aranda on TV, forgot he is now the DC at LSU. Defensive battle in the 1st half. They got beasts on both teams.

  101. kahuna September 3, 2016 11:32 am

Look at it this way….If Ikaika is not getting the job done and the coaches continue to keep him in then the fan will see this as Norm Chow part 2 and lose interest.

I have always like Ikaika as a person. He’s top notch young man but this is about productivity and unfortunately he have not produced wins.

Rolo wants to change the culture and told everyone that. Well…he has got to make the hard decision and give fans hope. If he doesn’t make any noticeable changes then what will have to look forward to? Most of us have seen 5 years of this and we supposed to get excited at the same old same old??????

Next week is our first home game and its a perfect time to get fans excited about changes, Having Ikaika continue to start will excite no one, unfortunately.

  102. Willie September 3, 2016 11:38 am

#91, good points. However the key here is that Bryant Moniz improved. Take a look at the body of work IW has had here at Hawaii. More Int’s than TDs, completing under 50% of your career passes is good? He’s a senior, how much improvement will he show? He’s not around next year, he got his chance. If you’re going to build for the future having experience and growth for the key cog on offense, which is the QB makes sense right? A year in Rolo’s system for someone coming back next year is positive?

  103. islandman September 3, 2016 11:51 am

FG by Rigo, 55 yards. Is that a record for UH or close to it ?

  104. azwarrior22 September 3, 2016 12:01 pm

I’m with #91, IW has had his chance multiple times and he hasn’t delivered and doesn’t have the “IT” factor. Even the ESPN commentators recognized that DB has some skills, but lacks game experience. Rolo, make the right decision and start DB next week, so he will be ready when we visit UA in 2 weeks. I think we can beat UA with DB, but not with IW.

  105. st. anthony trojan September 3, 2016 12:13 pm

OMG…..why all the doom n gloom….we are still in first place in Mountain West.

    2 fumbles…..2 picks…..8 penalties…..killers !

    They do better next week…..

Travel 20 k miles in 2 weeks n expect to perform against top notch team…..maybe asking to much…..

    IMUA

  106. Whats up September 3, 2016 12:16 pm

After rewatching last season 2015 Hawaii vs #1Ohio State game. The Hawaii defense was stout for 3 and half quarters against Urban Meyer Buckeyes. They held J.T Barrett, 12 gauge “Cardell, RB Ezkiell Elliot in check. This years defense is atrocious. Hopefully Rolo can get the defense fixed because the offense looked like it did last year. A QB change is welcome, UT Martin is a good game to play Brown and Zwahlen and see who wants is more.

  107. Ipu Man September 3, 2016 12:16 pm

bc said on the radio broadcast that Rigo’s kick tied for all time
2nd place in UH history with Jason Elam… But they have to
check on it some more. Maybe the animals know…

  108. 3-Prong September 3, 2016 12:16 pm

In the last drive before the half Ikaika consistently hit his targets and the team moved down the field. He did it by hitting his primary targets in timing pattern. I do agree that IW may not be the best once the primary target is taken away and a second or third read is required. I did not see enough of Drews passing ability yet to determine if he is the answer. I did like his pocket presence, scrambling ability and quick decision making though.

Still encouraged… Next week!! Go Bows!

(P.S. Home Depot has twin pack charcoal for $10! Go Ash, Never Gas! )

  109. z September 3, 2016 12:30 pm

Michigan defenders know how to get off our blocks. Ours just seem to disappear. I am curious to hear from Rolo why he made the qb change and if he is going to stick with it? I really miss Julian on the inside. He had good instincts for finding the ball carrier. I saw some players who did some good things. I think Meffy did okay. And Kory. I still think we are soft up the middle. Need to find backers who can fill better. I liked what little I saw of Dru. He throws a nice ball. Could use more reps with 1st team. If he is the guy the offense will need time to get used to him being in there. At times it seems that our receivers gave up on the play. Kinda did that too in Cal game.

It was embarrassing when a commentator said that unless you are a Michigan or Hawaii fan there are better games to watch. This is how low we have become. It really is time for coach to take a look and make some hard adjustments.

  110. wow September 3, 2016 12:42 pm

The sky is falling the sky is falling, we are doomed, lol …..

  111. 808 September 3, 2016 1:03 pm

0 – 2. It’s still early in the season. Now if at the end we see 0 – 13, then we should be worried.

I think UH will win some games under Rolo. IW or DB? It’s nice to have competition at the QB position again. I just hope Rolo makes the right call before MWC play.

  112. 3-Prong September 3, 2016 1:09 pm

    Time to unleash KT…

  113. uhfan10 September 3, 2016 1:59 pm

anybody knows how to watch uh vs. ut martin live via streaming

  114. Moocher September 3, 2016 2:19 pm

A full playbook years under his belt IW who won’t be here next year versus a vanilla just got here but will be here 3 more years DB…

Gotta go with DB. Vanilla runned offense looks better than full package runned offense.

Most importantly, DB is the first QB we had in a while that we can actually develop and will be here for a few years to grow with the coaching staff.

    I’m miss Sean Schroeder.

  115. Former UH Athlete September 3, 2016 2:22 pm

IW only moved the chains when Michigan was up 35-0 and they dropped into a soft zone, no press and rushed 3. All the completions were under 5 yards downfield anything extra were YAC, which Michigan was more than happy to give until UH got into the red zone. Then Michigan started reapplied pressure and IW reverted back to his normal, then inexcusably drew an intentional grounding that ended the drive with no points.

We’ve seen 3+ seasons of IW and even if you give him more credit than his stats showed last week, he’s just not going to give you more than 60% completions on a good day. That’s not going to cut it at any level of football. He’s had more than enough chances to succeed, regardless of style of offense or whatever excuse anybody wants to give.

IW has produced one 3 TD game in 30 games played. He’s only produced one 60%+ performance when attempting more than 15 passes in a game. He’s had 19 games with more than 15 attempts.

    Next man up please.

The physical difference was like watching Punahou playing a school like Kaimuki. It’s tough to block, tackle, cover or get open against players that are bigger, stronger faster than you. Larry Price’s old adage applied to this game.

Woolsey seems more comfortable in a spread offense where the pass is used to set up the run. He doesn’t appear to have any running instincts nor aptitude to use his legs to extend plays. The QB run is a major component of the spread option. Brown appears to be a better fit for this offense but he’s had such a short period to learn the play book.

IMHO Rolo has to tweak the O to better fit Woolsey or go through Brown’s growing pains in fully learning the O and personnel. At this point I think Brown probably knows less than half of the playbook.

  117. islandman September 3, 2016 2:37 pm

99… The UH website said Rig0’s is 2nd after Elam and Jason Ayat’s 56 yd FG’s. But Rigo’s was good. It looked like it curved from the right to go right between the goal posts.
    ————————————————————————————
Watch out for UT-Martin who lost only 7-28 to Cincinnati on Sept 1.

  118. z September 3, 2016 2:41 pm

Biggest difference I saw besides the rushing yards was Ikaika 4 sacks Dru 0.

  119. z September 3, 2016 2:43 pm

Rigo might end up being the kicker with most tackles too.

  120. z September 3, 2016 2:54 pm

    105. I think the center snap killed that drive.

  121. Willie September 3, 2016 2:54 pm

#1 Alabama starts a Freshman QB against USC. They pull this guy and put in a true Freshman QB. Saban not shy on making a change. Yeah I know it’s Alabama with almost all 5 star recruits. But the word here is “change” to get the job done.

    Or like Kahuku playing Kalani.

Remember when the Falcons had to forfeit because they ran out of players mid-game?

    This must be around 1991.

  124. Boolakanaka September 3, 2016 3:17 pm

When I think of Kalani, I think of this gal named Mele Moniz…..u’i. If you don’t know ask someone…..

UMass hanging with Florida. Down 10-7 after 3.

  126. cocobean September 3, 2016 4:16 pm

I think our goal now should be to get competitive in our league. We have to separate ourselves from the bottom feeders and close the gap between us and Boise, Air Force and SDSU. Everyone outside of HI see us as the bottom of the MWC totem pole. Our goal should be to change that perception by winning t least half of our league games this year and improve our record each ensuing year. Rolo is the right man to do it. He just needs the support from the school and the fans.

  127. Arcumfortis September 3, 2016 4:26 pm

I understand the attraction of “big money” games for an impoverished athletic department. But not only is it demoralizing for the team and the new coaching staff to play these unwinnable games but I also wonder if it isn’t short sighted from a business perspective. You have a local fan base that is very tired of losing and many, many have simply lost interest. Games like this certainly don’t help to build on the interest that the “new start” has generated. I doubt the home opener will be well attended. All I can say is we better win with authority or the interest will wane more and quickly. So we make some money on these “body bag” games but get our butts kicked and lose the fan interest. We could be left with less money in the end and an unfortunate start to a promising new beginning. The 2007 team had the weakest schedule in the country. But we won games and generated interest and it was a lot of fun. No cares much about the weak 2007 schedule and Aloha Stadium was packed. Let’s play teams at our level and stop these sacrificial exercises. At least lets not plan three of four of our first games the way we did this year. It is probably a losing proposition all around. But I guess we are left with the results of the poor recruiting of the Chow era in terms of talent and the short sightedness of the Ben Jay era in terms of th schedule. The fan interest will return if we start to win again. I hope that happens before things deteriorate even further.

  128. islandman September 3, 2016 4:37 pm

Winning is everything. Ganot had a relatively weak non-conference schedule last season and was successful in part because he won most of those. Trapasso used to schedule a tough non- conference schedule in the past and got the fan’s wrath in return because he lost many games.

  129. islandman September 3, 2016 5:06 pm

Aranda returns to visit Wisconsin as No. 5 LSU’s DC and they lose 14 -16, despite giving up only 3 FG’s and 1 TD.

  130. WarriorNY September 3, 2016 5:23 pm

Don’t get too discouraged folks… Alabama is up 52-6 on USC midway through the fourth Q… My point is this can happen to anyone…

Goodnight and Safe Travels to all who made the trek to Ann Arbor…

  131. akuhead2 September 3, 2016 5:25 pm

118, 117, No, winning is not everything. You got to want to win, and you’ve got to want to win against the best. You got to love the game. That means you want to play with the best. It is all about change and changing in the right direction, continuously. And respecting your opponents for wanting to do the same. Out of respect, you want to play with the best. You want to win yes, but you’ve got to love the game. All the winners do.

  132. 808 September 3, 2016 5:56 pm

Michigan just had more talent than Hawaii. If this team keeps on losing against top power 5 conference teams and keeps on losing conference games because they are all worn down by conference play, the fan base at the stadium will get smaller. Who wants to pay for tickets, fight traffic to the stadium and then watch them lose.

I think more fans will go the route of PPV and watch games in the comfort of their own home.

A better gauge for UH will be the MWC. 2007 season was like a perfect storm. A weak schedule plus a seasoned team and a QB who could wing it and we saw UH’s best season.

I think fans just want to see wins even if some of the wins come from teams against the likes of Lamar.

Again, UH is 0-2. Who know’s with a DB as QB, UH may surprise some teams in conference play.

  133. tom-warriornation September 3, 2016 6:21 pm

ESPN commentators mentioned we were moving the ball toward the end of the first half when we went to the spread offense (ala June Jones). Why didn’t we do this earlier when we couldn’t move the ball at all during most of the first half?

I would have liked to see this spread offense for at least one series to start the 2nd half; but was happy to see that we have a potential QB that is a dual threat; which is what we badly need at this point.

  134. tom-warriornation September 3, 2016 6:25 pm

A QB that can hurt you with his legs really gives an offense a “shot in the arm” and brings excitement back to the fans! I am sure it can fire up the defense as well!

  135. Inyoface September 3, 2016 6:30 pm

Might need a dual qb system before conference play so we can figure out who really is the truth. Hopefully can see AZ in the next game too.

  136. Ohana Hawaii September 3, 2016 6:33 pm

    Go Warriors!

  137. Inyoface September 3, 2016 6:37 pm

#110 Yeah what was up with that rolling snap? I’ve never seen that before, I’ve seen it go over the head of the qb but rolling?

  138. Arcumfortis September 3, 2016 6:53 pm

121…AH…..I think you miss my point. At this time we cannot compete against “the best.” The power structure of college athletics has changed drastically and we (and the others not in the BSC conferences) cannot reasonably be expected to compete against the big schools. We did not play against Michigan as a method of challenging ourselves but because we need a big paycheck. I am simply saying that there is a consequence to accepting this paycheck. And this consequence is potentially further demoralizing our team and coaching staff and further alienating an already thin fan base. I am all for challenges and “playing up.” This is simply not the time to do it in my opinion and doing it repeatedly ( as we are in three of our first four games) is simply not wise from a competitive standpoint and it is also probably bad business because it probably further thins the number of people who are interested in following the team. This has nothing to do with loving the game and backing away from challenge. It’s about being wise in my opinion. I don’t think this season’s schedule is wise. If I show up at Aloha Stadium next Saturday and there are 35 or 40 thousand in the stands I will be dead wrong about this and actually……..be very happy to be wrong.

  139. oneseason September 3, 2016 6:53 pm

I guess coach Rolovich either forgot to ask the blog how he should coach, or he feels pretty confident he can handle it for now. Regardless, I see no resemblance to the style of play used during the previous four seasons.

  140. H-Man September 3, 2016 6:54 pm

iyf, I’ll try to explain the reason why the center “rolled” the ball. The ESPN broadcaster explained, as best as I can recall, a new center will tend to have his weight in the front for running plays. Sometimes, the football gets “stuck” because of the weight being placed on the ball. With only two weeks working at the center position, Leo K. is excused since the broadcast guy said this is fairly common for a new center.

  141. Ohana Hawaii September 3, 2016 6:59 pm

Go Warriors! That’s alright! Losing two top college team. Just try work harder next game!. Rich you should Woolsey bench him all throughout the entire year. See whatever your other three quarterbacks can do to help the team to win!. Because Woolsey never shown any for the pass four years at UH. You need a really seriously change at the QB!. Rich you seriously need a offensive coordinators!. Not the one you have now!. Go out and get one!. Because this is not a high school game!. Rich you are great head coach! And you gotten a great defensive coordinator staff!. Boston College is one!. What’s about other university for the offensive? . But anyway what happened to Kansas? University of Hawaii football should schedule Big time large university!. Otherwise Warriors you will get better then this year!

  142. NYUH September 3, 2016 7:00 pm

Take the money and run. Don’t look back.

  143. cappie the dog September 3, 2016 7:06 pm

Shouldn’t getting 7 wins by any means necessary more important than running a cost-efficient athletic department.

Hawaii is playing Tennessee-Martin next week, but it gives me pause that four FCS schools won today. South Dakota State lost, but they played like they could have beaten half the schools in the FBS.

  144. 3-Prong September 3, 2016 7:09 pm

    Go Wahine, Beat UCLA…

  145. steve P September 3, 2016 8:08 pm

Well its all been said, now and even before this. My only concern with these body bag games on National TV is the deleterious effects on recruiting. And do not think for one instant that potential recruits don’t think to themselves ,
‘Why would I want to play for this micky mouse loser program?”
This is primarily why we never really have a shot at real talent….geography is not any longer the issue…UH has met the enemy and its them!

  146. 3-Prong September 3, 2016 8:36 pm

  149. kev-1 September 3, 2016 9:39 pm

So Alabama is starting a true freshman at QB that they are really high on. Apparently, Saban does not usually like to play underclassmen, so this guy must be legit. Look for him to be a 4 year starter.

Is Tua making the right choice by choosing Alabama? Someone like him could go to a Pac12 school, or even UH, and start sooner than later. If he goes to Bama, he is going to have to seriously compete for the chance to maybe play as a junior or senior.

USC on the other hand looked like they could use some help at the position.

  150. cocobean September 3, 2016 10:02 pm

Did the team fly home after the game?

  151. Akamai Okole September 3, 2016 10:21 pm

Great Evening All! (Great Morning to those with me here in D-Town)

Watching the game replay on the U now and catching up on the blog comments.

    So much to respond to…

  152. Akamai Okole September 3, 2016 10:28 pm

Essentially, this came down to a physical mismatch.

UM’s strength as deduced by the ESPN color guy (don’t know his name but his background is a Pac-12 OL) is that Harbaugh has done the same thing at UofM as he has done elsewhere, most notably at Stanford (and even at SF in the NFL)…he built the OLine with future NFL’ers and had everything fall in line behind that.

Hawaii’s most glaring weakness is its DLine.

That mismatch was very evident early on.

  153. hitmanhart September 3, 2016 10:36 pm

ok the money games are over !! rolo knows what he was doing saving the young qbs for the rest of the season . think about it he had not thing to lose by putting Ikaika out there ikaika not going to be next season!!and if he did good all good if not rolo saved his young qbs for the season !! season start know !!

  154. Akamai Okole September 3, 2016 10:47 pm

Add on top of that all the A-A “skills” that UofM had on the field and it isn’t hard to figure out how limited the coaching options become for Rolo and his staff.

  155. Akamai Okole September 3, 2016 10:49 pm

After it got to 0-35, the success of the offense had more to do with UofM changing to a zone versus man press than what the TV guys said was because Hawaii spread it out. I think the latter came as a result of the former.

Before the D switched Hawaii’s receivers were blanketed by DB’s who already have hefty files put together by NFL scouts

  156. Akamai Okole September 3, 2016 10:52 pm

Why did UofM switch? It was their first game and I’m sure their coaches want to try out different things

  157. Akamai Okole September 3, 2016 11:06 pm

One dramatic difference between this staff and the last one (and it’s especially true of the HC) is there is no more pained looks, screaming and other antics when QB1 or any other player who screws up on the field comes back to the sideline.

    This staff won’t do that.

  158. Akamai Okole September 3, 2016 11:11 pm

The talking heads have said they like that Rolo has started his tenure with a couple of highlight games.

IIRC both of these games were inked prior to his selection; especially the UofM game which I have had circled on my calendar for years.

I think Hawaii keeps taking a couple of “money games” each season. Two sides of the argument based on if you win the games or lose. But how you going win if you no play?

  159. Akamai Okole September 3, 2016 11:21 pm

Anyway, the Good Lord willing, I’ll be in the stands on Saturday for the home opener regardless of how many others will be there, too.

And I’ll wave to all the PPVers and wish that they would join me in person.

    Pride Rock(s)

  163. akuhead2 September 4, 2016 2:30 am

#138, Aloha! Playing the big teams just brings out the urgency for improving. Thumbs up to urgency! I think rolo is making strides, and there are many here who believe. And if you love the game, you just simply don’t get demoralized. The game now, not the chatter about the game and stuff. That motor keeps running, even if you get knocked on your butt. You just know you need to improve. But you still love it.

  164. FearGod September 4, 2016 2:47 am

When they love the game…they become selfless…not about (I), (Me), but about my neighbor (teammate)
Majority will never get it..all they will do is keep that motor running, just as you described

161… right, UM flying around in a plane would have made up a 60 pt difference. I actually wish UM would’ve played a top tier opponet their first game. All of us in Ann Arbor knew they were going to come out like rabid dogs in the first one, just hope they maintain the effort/energy.. unfortunate circumstaces for Hawai’i with that and the travel.

Brown seems to have has moxy, he impressed me a lot more than Woolsey (albeit he had to play against the first string D). Good luck to you guys and kudos on always scheduling top ranked teams.
