Former punter’s son joins Warriors
When Shawn McCarthy was 7, he learned his father, Tom McCarthy, was not just an ordinary businessman.
“I was looking around and I saw a picture of him punting,” Shawn said. “He said, ‘Yeah, I used to play for UH.'”
Tom McCarthy, who averaged 40.7 yards during his UH career, also bounced around NFL camps for four years, with notable stops with the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks. He then returned to Hawaii, worked in real estate and now is a Wells Fargo senior vice president and complex manager.
Father and son. a 2014 Punahou School graduate, used to work out together when Shawn trained as a long-snapper. Shawn attended Puget Sound before transferring to UH.
“My dad used to play here back in the day, and he encouraged me to come and play special teams, too,” Shawn said. “I thought it would be cool.”
This week, Shawn McCarthy joined the Warriors as a long-snapper. Shawn, who is 6 feet 4 and 280, is a sophomore who must redshirt this season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules.
GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
And good morning Tim and Al!
Cool – that’s one huge long snapper. I remember Tom as being rock-steady back there. Always great to see someone come in as a legacy.
With that size, maybe he can also play center.
Great Morning All!
Welcome Shawn!
At 6-4, 280 if he had any aspirations of doing anything other than LS-ing, he would’ve done it at UPS…
…of course, the Wildcats in McMinnville woulda knocked the sense back in to him! 😉
Stay the course, young man. A long, stable future awaits an accurate and consistent LS at this and the next level.

Regarding the Blog Host’s wardrobe…
I believe most of his tops are designed by Charles Schulz 😈
Good day Tom!
Any great new burger joints?
I like it that the team showed face at the vball game.
That’s how it should be.
Welcome Shawn McCarthy!
Stephen Tsai, do you know why there are no video streaming options for this weeks home UH football game?
MauiBoyAlaska — what city do you reside in?
Al & Tom — I’m looking for a burger place with good onion rings…
Well I was gonna ask if there was a live stream of the game but I guess I got my answer from MauiboyAlaska. Its tough the only thing we can get are live streams here in San Antonio if its not on ESPN.

WELCOME HOME SHAWN! To the University of Hawaii football program OHANA! GO BOWS!
Great Morning All!
It’s Game Day!
Pomai,
56 – 14 Akamai Okole
Michigan today honestly is looking better than they did against Hawaii and that’s scary.
No stream due to rights being owned by OC. They have no way at the present time to block the stream coming back to Hawaii. It undermines their PPV customers. Does not matter but UCF is down 31 zip barely into 2nd quarter to Michigan
