Flag day

A flag football game involving former Warriors will precede the Warrior Bowl on April 27.

Asked why it will be flag and not tackle football, organizer Tony Tuioti, a UH coach and former defensive tackle, said: “We’re old.”

Still, passions don’t die away, and it should be competitive.

Interested participants need to call Tuioti at the UH football office: (808) 956-6508.

Quarterback Danny O’Brien has decided to transfer from Maryland to Wisconsin.

What the heck does this have to do with UH?

O’Brien will earn his bachelor’s degree in four years and, under NCAA rules, he may transfer to another FBS school without sitting out a season. O’Brien strongly considered the Warriors. After the new UH coaches evaluated their quarterback situation, they were impressed enough with David Graves and Cayman Shutter to withdraw from pursuing O’Brien.

  13. SteveM March 28, 2012 8:23 am

My last flag football game was in PE at Intermediate school. The fast and agile guys would fly past or slip around most of us. After being down 50-sumthin to zero, we were finally pulled their flags by tackling them first. πŸ˜‰

    Everyone wears flags? Linemen too?

i was looking forward to the revival of some rivalries in women’s sports in particular.

  24. Stephen Tsai March 28, 2012 8:58 am

Maybe like stocks, UH can keep splitting. Some teams go to the WCC, some stay in the Big West …

  25. Haleakala March 28, 2012 9:03 am

Marinovich would make an interesting interview though he doesn’t have any ties to the Warriors. He was raised from the time he was born to be a quarterback, had a successful high school and college career, and flopped as a pro when he had substance abuse and legal problems. Reminds me of Ryan Leaf. I read recently that Marinovich is now a successful artist and is turning his life around.

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid March 28, 2012 9:10 am

Our good buddy Midnight is making great headway since his big event last week Tuesday. His loverly wife Barb was about to take him for a walk when we got off the phone just now. Keep Korrageous Kal and Barb in your prayers!

  27. al March 28, 2012 9:10 am

the marinovich story somewhat mirrors the tate forcier saga wherein the kid was bred to be a quarterback from as soon as he could walk.

the pressure got to marinovich. forcier continues his journey and i hope he gets it one day.

  28. BigWave96744 March 28, 2012 9:10 am

BTW, ex Kansas QB Brock Berglund (2011 Valor HS graduate), who was recruited by Norm Chow to Utah, is still unattached and looking for a new school to play. He is 6’4″. Also prior assault charges against him were dropped.

  29. BigWave96744 March 28, 2012 9:13 am

ST, #19, that would be a great fundraiser for Nakoa.

$25 to play, $50 to watch us kill ourselves..

  30. kev-1 March 28, 2012 9:26 am

looks like Wisconsin is the “transfer here for one more season” school. Last year was the same thing with Russel Wilson. Seems to work out for them.

I was wondering who the QB they were no longer interested in was . . . O’Brien. Was he a starter for Maryland?

  31. kev-1 March 28, 2012 9:27 am

Marinovich is available for interviews for what?

😎 Bryson — please remind them that I am not a travel agent and any arrangements are strictly on their own… but please let me know if WSN organizes a pre or post tailgate cruise in conjunction with a UH football game.

Cruise tailgate is a 3-7 night tailgate that could run 24/7. Best part is that you do not have to buy/prepare food, drink all you can afford, and no need to drive home. I envision “choosing/designating” a lounge or public area on ship and all members can wander in anytime and meet others to talk football and use their laptops & phones. Since everything is open 24/7, the odds you will find someone there (depending on the size of your group). Spouse doesn’t want to talk football? Careful–keep her out of the spa. πŸ™„

With Russell Wilson last year, and Danny O’Brien this year, Wiscy has become king of the one and done QB’s.

    BIK

  39. BigWave96744 March 28, 2012 10:07 am

Danny O’Brien was the ACC Freshman of the year when at Maryland. In the last 2 years, Maryland has been a mess with many players kicked off the team or transferring on their own.

  40. ai-eee-soos March 28, 2012 10:22 am

That’s good news, regarding the caliber of our QB’s.

” … After the new UH coaches evaluated their quarterback situation, they were impressed enough with David Graves and Cayman Shutter to withdraw from pursuing Danny O’Brien. … “

  41. BigWave96744 March 28, 2012 10:25 am

Danny O’Brien will actually graduate in 3 years. He will have 2 to play 2 at Wincy.

  42. slenzi March 28, 2012 10:47 am

Don’t know about Danny O’Brien’s character, but its beginning to sound like he may have been another one of those “entitlement babies” who insist on being guaranteed things instead of competing for them. Good luck to him if he is. Let’s hope not.

Pacific leaving the Big West for the WCC… hmmm, what a downer. That means no road trips to Stockton, the Most Miserable City in America according to Forbes last year.

    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2012/03/the-most-miserable-city.html

Seriously, the Tigers do have a strong softball program, so that’s a loss. But in most other sports they’re middle-to-bottom of the pack in the Big West. And as a small (5K students) private school they’re a better fit in the WCC.

Also this will result in both the Big West and WCC having 10 members, which from a scheduling perspective is ideal for a non-football conference.

I suppose the only question is whether UH should change its name to UC Honolulu, since it will now be playing conference oppponents comprised exclusively of University of California and California State University schools.

  51. Kevin March 28, 2012 11:40 am

Congrats to former Wahines Stacey Porter, Justine Smethurst, and Clare Warwick for being named to the 2012 Open Women’s Team for Australia along with Kaia Parnaby.

They will participate at the ISF XIII Open Women’s World Championship in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada from July 13-22 2012.

  52. BigWave96744 March 28, 2012 11:55 am

β€œWe’re excited that Danny has chosen to attend Wisconsin,” Bielema said in a statement. β€œThe first thing we did when we were aware of Danny’s interest was to try and find out what type of person he was and if he would fit into our program. From our dealings with him and all the things I have heard from those who have been around him, he is a tremendous person and has great character. He had a fantastic visit and our current players who met him came away impressed. Having graduated from Maryland in just three years, you know right away that he is a smart kid.”

    A-House,

You’re thinking about the Olympics actually. Since softball is no longer a part of the Olympics until 2016at the least, no worries.

Kaia has been competing continuously for Australia in things like these since her arrival.

  62. whitey March 28, 2012 12:36 pm

We have had sum super “redos” in the past. Larry Cole, Golden Richards, Larry Sherrer, Colt Brennan, Tom Tuunei’s brother, and more. I trust the coaches to make the decision whether they accept one or not.

  63. whitey March 28, 2012 12:38 pm

Mark Tuuinei. dang, that was hard on the brain.

  64. Kevin March 28, 2012 12:38 pm

    A-House,

In addition to Kaia being a senior next season he’s signed lefty Loie Kesterson from California and MPI’S Keiki Carlos for the spring of 2013.

After that he has verbals for two standouts in California. Brittany Hitchcock and Heather Morales. Both girls are about 5’9-5’10 with TREMENDOUS ERAs in rhe 1.20 and sub 1.00 range and plus .400 batting averages.

Morales played for the Firecrackers, one of, if not the premiere travel club in So-Cal.

  69. Kevin March 28, 2012 1:19 pm

    A-House,

Most local softball fans are already familiar with Carlos. If you watched her battle with Leisha Liilii in the state finals last season, it was fun to watch. Carlos is not a big, physically imposing pitcher like Ricketts, but she had some good field presence in the circle.

Loie Kesterson’s profile from her travel squad’s website:

  71. Willie March 28, 2012 1:23 pm

BW96744, re: your #43 notes 3 years to graduate & 2 to play 2. But the Wisky news release says he graduated from Maryland in 3 years. In these situations doesn’t the player only have one year of eligibility left, does not have to sit out transfer year as a grad student?

Can see why Coach Chow opted not to take him only for a 1 year quick fix. For the long haul, future depth makes sense to trust Graves & Shutter.

  72. RedZone March 28, 2012 1:26 pm

  73. cheepono March 28, 2012 1:48 pm

willie: o’brien spent 3 years at maryland (1 redshirt and 2 active years) so he has 2 years left to play 2 seasons. no need sit out because he graduated. UH is in a similar situation with an o-lineman.

  74. Willie March 28, 2012 1:50 pm

Cheepono, appreciate the clarification & explanation. Who is the O-lineman and where did he start out at?

My brother and I went to this game. Sold out. People outside the stadium were willing to pay $200 cash for a ticket.

Marinovich and Seau were for USC. Rice, Watters, Rocket, Zorich, and Lyght were for ND. Classic match. First thing- BEEF in the endzone before the game. That set the tone. Everyone knew this was going to be a battle to the end.

I’ve always wished Hawaii fans could be as enthusiastic, dedicated, and loyal as ND fans are to their Fighting Irish. The entire stadium stood up throughout the entire game. Everyone knew and belted out every cheer.

Under JJ’s watch, I’ve always felt the key missing ingredient has been discipline. We’ve TOTALLY got it now under Chow.

I’m soooo looking forward to seeing glory days arise in Halawa! It’s gonna be awesome!!

2013???.take more dance classes to.extend his grad school, perhaps?

Maybe Garret, WarriorMojo, Duster, Nakoa Mike others at a higher IQ scale than me might know..

OK 3 guys was interviewing for an FBI job. The agent called up the first guy, a Hawaiian. He gives him a gun and said “your wife is in that room all tied up in a chair. Your test is to kill your wife with this gun. The Hawaiian responded, “sorry sir. I cannot do that. I love my wife too much. FBI agent dismisses the Hawaiian and calls the next guy, a Filipino. He gives him the gun and says “you wife is in the next room tied to a chair. You are to go in the room and kill your wife with this gun.” The Filipino goes into the room then silence. The door opens and the Filipino comes out crying saying “I am so sorry sir, I could not do it.” So the agent dismisses the Filipino. Then then calls up the last guy, a Potagee, and gives him the gun and tells him “your wife in the the next room tied to a chair. I want you to go in their and kill your wife with this gun.” So the Potagee takes the gun, enters the room and closes the door behind him. BANG! BANG! 2 shots ring out, then CRASH! THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!. The door opens Potagee comes out and says to the agent “Eh, the gun only had blanks, so I had to use da chair.”

Beautiful day in Hawaii. Have a great day everybody!

Mahalo to all the Tsaikos for the birthday wishes. I just got back from dinner with my wife and son. We ended up at Monterray (Sp?) Bay Canners in Pearlridge. Did you know that the birthday person’s meal is % off of the age of that person. Mine was almost free! I had a great day today and looking forward to celebrating the rest of the week for my birthweek

  110. Slugger March 28, 2012 9:34 pm

Bulla, thanks but I just turned 40. I was tired of being 39 for 19 years. Had to move on. πŸ™‚

I have been in a secret last-minute cruise fare stare down game for the last 2 months.

    Yesterday, I flinched.

So, will be on the Pride of America doing the 7-day romp from April 21, 2012.

The Maui Warrior practice will the same day. Shucks…one day off sync. 😐

    Sat: embarkation

    Sun-Mon: Kahului

    Tue: Hilo

    Wed: Kona

    Thu-Fri: Nawiliwil

…another scouting mission for updated intel for a future Tsai-ko cruise. πŸ™„

  119. Curt March 28, 2012 10:45 pm

It sounds like Pacific going to the WCC is actually a good thing for the Big West. It’ll be interesting to see what’s in store for San Jose State in the future. The WAC is sinking fast and San Jose State is probably praying that certain doors open up…and soon.

  120. Curt March 28, 2012 10:49 pm

What conference are Boise’s Olympic sports in?

  121. Curt March 28, 2012 10:52 pm

If the Big East grabs other western schools, the Big West could actually grow and become stronger.

  122. jm2375 March 28, 2012 10:54 pm

OK, SteveM, this scouting mission is starting to turn into a state feasibility study. What is this, your gadzillionth PoA cruise? πŸ™„ πŸ˜† j/k

jm2375 — well, it’s a training mission too. Have to familiarize a new cruise inspector with the area. Maybe meet some indigenous Tsai-kos too. πŸ˜†

Answer: That’s what people do. The same could be said for theology and philosophy. People on here constantly repeat nonsense about every topic on earth. Why should evolution be any different?
