Sanchez wins MW award

Rigo Sanchez — placekicker, punter, kickoff specialist — was named Mountain West’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

Sanchez has not missed a field goal this season, going 2-for2 in the 34-17 victory over San Jose State.

He averaged 44.5 yards on six punts.

And he kicked off, twice from UH’s 20.

“He has great talent, but he works at it,” Nick Rolovich said. “He’s always looking for a way to get better. And that’s why he’ll be successful in life.”

* * * * *

It’s a holiday, which means you’ll some time to come up with questions about the UH football team.

As usual, there are some rules:

> UH won’t discuss injuries or strategies.

> True freshmen are not available for interviews. (However, a coach can address questions about true freshmen.)

We’ll post the answers in Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser and the Warrior Beat.

Nick Rolovich will have questions for you tomorrow.

First? And congrats to Rigo being named MWC special teams player of the week!

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
My question for Coach–What are your expectations for the program by the end of your contract term? (presuming a 3 year term…which hopefully, is extended)

  3. Trey Oshiro October 10, 2016 7:12 am

Coach, what do you think of implementing a system of helmet stickers for future teams?

  4. Mitch T October 10, 2016 7:39 am

During the third quarter, why was the running game plan so focused on running up the middle versus on the perimeter to open the middle up a little?

  5. WarriorNY October 10, 2016 7:44 am

Will we ever get a solution to the online streaming problem? I wonder if a third party can purchase the rights for online streaming and blackout certain areas that would hurt ppv…

  6. football junkie October 10, 2016 7:52 am

Coach Rolo – You have three running backs with the ability to be successful in your offense. I would like to see Paul Harris get more opportunities. How do you determine each one’s playing time?

  7. tom-warriornation October 10, 2016 7:55 am

Congrats to Rigo! Rigo had a family group of almost 70 at SJSU; big families present were the Woolsey & Torres clan; Rolo’s mom & family; former player Daryl Williams, & the families of Malachi Mageo, Jamal Mayo & Jalen Rogers.

SDSU tickets still available (Nov 5 in San Diego for potential first place division game)–$25 (UH price is $30) sitting with 200+ UH fans on the Hawaii side: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com or text 415-324-0585.

  8. PONO October 10, 2016 7:59 am

The Koloamatangi family was out in force. They were roasting two whole pigs in the parking lot.

  9. Postmanke October 10, 2016 8:13 am

Rigo is a special talent and finally some recognition congrats! I like the momentum, it’s coming together.

  10. Down with.... October 10, 2016 8:22 am

hmmmmm…no questions for coach this week. Keep up the winning and good playing. Really enjoying the new team and efforts! Go Bows!!

  11. chawan_cut October 10, 2016 8:59 am

    Question for coach:
Is there a plan to have the players walk down the tailgate aisle into the stadium like in the previous years? Or do you guys do that near the North endzone tunnel? We tailgate on the South side and it was cool to have the band and team walk thru the parking lot and get everyone hyped up for the game.
    Mahalo!

  12. cocobean October 10, 2016 9:08 am

It’s time for the 12th man to show up. I think it’ll be a let down for the team if less than 25K fans show up for homecoming. The team is still a work in progress getting better every week. Any increase in fan support can only help. The players need to know all their hard work is appreciated.

  13. cocobean October 10, 2016 9:10 am

Eddie would go. June would throw. Nick would roll(the dice).

  14. Kanani808 October 10, 2016 9:11 am

Coach rolo and team good win keep up the hard work and momentum! Just a thought tho I wana see Paul Harris and Lakalaka used more especially when saint juste wasn’t playing so well nothing against him but all players have good and bad games, give the other running backs a chance especially since they are proven find the hot hand and givem a chance! Go bows!

  15. kev-1 October 10, 2016 9:12 am

    Coach,
Why do people keep asking you about the live streaming of football games?

  16. kev-1 October 10, 2016 9:16 am

Based on the tackling and speed issues our defense has had this season, are you considering different defensive packages against UNLV, who occasionally feature an option like attack?

Is this question too much along the lines of “strategy?”

  17. upchurch October 10, 2016 9:29 am

Just wanted to express my pride on what coach Rolo has done for UH football. I know you still have a long way to go but what you have done so far is energized my pride in warrior football again. I once told coach Rolo my experience with UH football and how I used to ride my bike down to the quarry with my pals when we were little kids to watch the football team practice.(disclaimer: a very, very long time ago) I’ve been a diehard ever since. It’s been lonely and a challenge being a fan these last few years, but I feel good about the future! Mahalo Coach- Hope you are here for a long time!!!

  18. hilorain October 10, 2016 9:30 am

Coach Rolo, is there ever a “good” penalty? For example, a holding penalty that prevents QB from getting crushed or a pass interference when a DB gets burned to prevent an obvious TD. Are there other “good” penalties?

  19. WarriorNY October 10, 2016 9:30 am

I’m not asking Rolo about streaming… I’m asking the general population…

  20. diamonds808 October 10, 2016 9:33 am

Congrats to Rigo – well deserved! My question to Coach Rolo – (going back to the “excessive celebration” rule, which I think is dumb!) How can someone Hi-5’ing little kids in the stands after a TD be “excessive celebration”? It’s not like he was taunting the other team or anything.
Can he ask the officials about that?

Geez – THAT is what takes the fun out of the game, now everyone trying to be PC and “not hurt anyone’s feelings”. Give me a break! Ok pau venting.

Other than that – Thanks Coach, staff and team for bringing excitement back to UH Football!!! 🙂

  21. Bryson October 10, 2016 9:34 am

Coach Rolo congratulations to the team and the coaches for pointing the ship in the right direction…

My question is do you plan to ask the MWC offices to review to game tape against SJSU where our team was penalized for excessive celebration and they were not?

  22. J-Dog October 10, 2016 9:36 am

    Coach Rolo,

Any thoughts on promos for getting the seats filled in the immediate future? With the product you are putting on the field, there’s no doubt the fans will be back eventually. But for short-term, why doesn’t the marketing dept get more creative? Like a increasing discount for multiple ticket purchases at a time? How about a family night where 2 tickets are free with every 4 attendees? Or build up our future fan base with a buy 1 adult get 1 under 18 free, etc. Might as well fill up those empty seats with people that might be inclined to spend money at the concessions.

  23. J-Dog October 10, 2016 9:42 am

    Coach,

What is the working relationship between UH and the Stadium Authority like? Does UH have some say in the marketing, inner workings of how the game day experience can be improved? Do you have ideas that will be implemented in the future? I don’t have much faith in the UH marketing dept. Especially when a former UH basketball staffer did way more to increase attendance and was a much better marketer than the UH marketing dept. ever was. Mahalo Coach and keep up the good work.

  24. Walter October 10, 2016 9:57 am

Can you ask what was Barker’s touchdown celebration dance? Looked like a mash-up of Victor Cruz and Ric Flair

  25. H-Man October 10, 2016 9:58 am

Can UH Athletics/football ask the business school/marketing/AMA to conduct a marketing research study to determine which market(s) pose the best/greatest potential to increase attendance at Warrior football games at Aloha Stadium? The study to include advertising, promotions, ticket pricing (structure and strategy), optimization of game-time parking and concession sales recommendations.

  26. Trey Oshiro October 10, 2016 10:14 am

Coach, what do you think of adding helmet stickers as part of our game day attire?

  27. Luki October 10, 2016 10:23 am

Congratulations on the win coach Rolo… Just wondering it there is a shovel pass in the playbook ala Brennan to Ilaoa from back in the day? That play was football’s version of Stockton to Malone. You know it’s coming and there’s nothing you can do to stop it…

  28. hitmanhart October 10, 2016 10:42 am

coach rolo ; saint juste is a good back lot dance moves but this past game was more of a Lakalaka type of game of hiting the hole fast & hard . even the pay preview game crew was calling for Lakalaka !! my question is who making the call what running back goes in head coach rolo or oc. smith?

  29. Mike96816 October 10, 2016 10:51 am

Coach, is Daniel Lewis going to red-shirt this season?

  30. Andrew October 10, 2016 10:53 am

Obviously student attendance has been lacking. Does the athletic department work with any student organizations to come up with ideas to attract more students to the games? Who would know better ideas than actual students themselves.

  31. warriorsanddolphins October 10, 2016 11:04 am

With Keelan Ewaliko’s size and speed, would the coaches think of trying him at strong safety or maybe a rush defensive end?

  32. papayalips October 10, 2016 11:05 am

Rolo, Will you bring back the awesome “reward” helmet stickers from the June Jones days?

  33. NorthShoreFan October 10, 2016 11:05 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Coach Rolo, Looking at how the season has gone so far, My expectation of this team going forward is (fill in the blank)______________.
(try to avoid the obvious responses)
Team starting to play like Warriors. Defense is shaping up. Seems like they starting to get comfortable with the schemes. Offense is starting to get Offensive. Special Teams is starting to be “Special”.
Looking forward to a hard fought W this week!
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  34. NorthShoreFan October 10, 2016 11:08 am

KE rides bulls, rope and wrangle cattle. He’ll put a hurt on ball carriers or receivers.

  35. Former UH Athlete October 10, 2016 11:31 am

    Rolo

After watching the Wazzu-Stanford game, WSU ran a few plays from an unusual spread formation that I found interesting… then again, Mike Leach is a different type of cat and unusual is par for the course.

It was spread 22 (2 WRs on each side), but with all receivers lined up outside the numbers. It was really interesting to see how far it stretches the defensive alignment. Stanford had LBs and Safeties that were lined up with nobody with 10 yards of them, plus it makes it really hard to disguise coverage when there’s 20 yards of space between the tackles and the nearest WR.

Any chance you will be taking a look to see if you can incorporate some of it since you use several spread concepts?

  36. Painbow Sore-ior October 10, 2016 11:57 am

Coach, has the fact that players from the mainland are no longer able to have their families watch them play football begun to hurt player morale or out-of-state recruiting yet?

  37. clyde October 10, 2016 12:06 pm

Coach, if it’s team sensitive, then please don’t answer this question: What is the status of Daniel Lewis and Jerrol Garcia-Williams?

Lewis might have been injured earlier, but JGW played against Nevada but don’t think he played at all against SJSU. I believe both were suspended for the opener, and I hope their situation is not somehow related to that.

  38. UH Fan for Life October 10, 2016 12:30 pm

Coach Rolo, congratulations to you and the team on the road win. This team is showing a lot of heart and is playing hard. Hope to see a good crowd at Aloha Stadium for the UNLV game. If the season ticket holders can convince at least one more fan to come to the game, maybe we can get 30.000 in the house.

My question is for coach Naeole and coach Elimimian – what do you see in the team that is different compared to last season? e.g. Strength, speed, chemistry, etc.

  39. A-House October 10, 2016 12:36 pm

we send our deepest sympathy to the Richard Lum family!

he was in a class by himself.

  40. A-House October 10, 2016 12:48 pm

    Coach Rolo:

I like what we are seeing in “youngsters” getting quality playing time and your statements in the sports section about recruiting players who are better than your crop of “youngsters” – that surely encourage them to continue training to become stronger and faster!

while we were in Australia, you received a commitment from one of the two Melbourne players also recruited by Michigan – I do hope this player keeps his commitment to UH — playing #91 and #98 now may tip the other player, 6′ 10” lineman, to your favor — that would be a recruiting “coup” over Jim Harbaugh.

what are the most daunting challenges in getting “down under” players past the NCAA hurdle(s)? is a single coach “charged” with this task? will this coach produce a “manual” others may use if he departs?

  41. kapakahi October 10, 2016 1:05 pm

    Coach Rolo,

Are you intending to schedule any official recruiting visits for mainland recruits (and/or even those from Australia & American Samoa) to Hawaii for any of the remaining UH home games (so that they can experience the home game environment first-hand)?…..and/or possibly even the year-end team banquet?

  42. kapakahi October 10, 2016 1:32 pm

    Coach Rolo,

Following these decisive back-to-back victories over MWC competition, what noticeable differences have the assistant coaches noticed in the level of interest from local Hawaii HS prospects?……..as well as from prospective Cali HS prospects (especially those also being recruited by Nevada and/or San Jose State)?

  43. hitmanhart October 10, 2016 1:32 pm

coach rolo why was there no shovel passing this past game? with the running game being stop in the 1st half?

  44. whitey October 10, 2016 2:24 pm

First of all congrats to the Warriors. Fans keep asking the same question each week to the coaching staff about why so and so is not playing and what is the reason. Unless the coaches have good reasons for not disclosing info, they should be honest with the question concerning why player isn’t playing. If the player is injured or recovering, why keep it a secret. Many fans have ties with the Warriors and am sure they would love to go to a game and see them play. For an average outer island fan to attend one game at Aloha stadium, the cost for game and overnight is $500 or more and you can imagine the cost for a family of 4. My question is why should I go to watch the Warriors on Oahu and incur the cost if my friend’s son is not going to play. I can watch the game at my friend’s house for gratis.

  45. Bryson October 10, 2016 2:43 pm

Coach Rolo I know you mention June Jones as one of your mentors have you reached out to him after games to talk or ask his advice about juggling the many duties of a Head Coach?

  46. Defend Pride Rock October 10, 2016 2:50 pm

    Coach Rolo:

When a recruit commits but “keeps all options open,” is he still considered committed? What changes occur in recruiting a kid once he commits?

  47. Maddog50 October 10, 2016 2:53 pm

Coupla tings-JGW is back on the game notes depth chart, believe he was nursing a leg injury. Also FYI the local FOX affiliate has apparently purchase the right for the game to be broadcast in LV. Could comment on non 808 fans being shutout but what good would it do-

  48. NotNasti October 10, 2016 3:32 pm

Whitey: If you’re a fan, you support the team, not only your friend’s son. If you’re supporting only your friend’s son, can’t you ask your friend if his son is going to play?

  49. orioles4eva October 10, 2016 3:35 pm

Coach Rolo, after the Nevada game I was expecting our run game to be more successful against San Jose St. What did San Jose do with their defensive fronts to stop our run game? Why didn’t we use the fly sweep or pitches to attack their flanks? Mahalo and keep up the great work.

  50. Boolakanaka October 10, 2016 3:41 pm

    Aloha e Coach–

I’m curious, how much recruiting overlap is there with UNLV, that is to say, it seems with the geographic region and many poly athletes, are we recruiting many of the same athletes?

  51. kalua pig October 10, 2016 3:54 pm

rolo, your player’s mailand family no can see their kids play without streaming.how do you feel about this situation?

  52. z October 10, 2016 3:55 pm

    Way to go Kenny.
    Way to go Navy!

  53. oneseason October 10, 2016 5:01 pm

AD Matlin: Could UH Athletics and/or the Aloha Stadium authority consider selling season parking passes for the upper and lower Halawa parking lots? This seems to work great for the SSC parking for volleyball, enabling faster entry into the parking facility. Personally, I would happily pay a 50% premium on the current $6 per game parking cost for the convenience.
Coach Rolovich and AD Matlin: From you interactions with students, do you think their attendance at football games could be significantly improved if they had the opportunity to sit in better seats? Today’s students could be the season ticket holders of tomorrow. Giving them a better experience during their college years seems like an investment in future season ticket revenue.

  54. cocobean October 10, 2016 5:09 pm

Rolo. A suggestion for an honorary captain. Someone who’s first year in the program was the same as your first year here. Someone who was here for the glory years. For the most part he was a fan favorite. I wouldn’t mind if Vili the Warrior made a cameo appearance. I think the local players would be fired up if Vili led the Ha’a, they all should have childhood memories of him. Nostalgic old futs like me would get a kick out his drumming and antics.

  55. kapakahi October 10, 2016 5:10 pm

    Coach Rolo,

How many prospects are being actively recruited for the 2017 Signing Class from Australia? and from American Samoa?

  56. Warrior Dave October 10, 2016 5:18 pm

I held my breath every time the defense stopped San Jose and celebrated. Maybe I was gun shy from the penalties against the offense. I loved it when the offense just shook hands every time they scored a TD. Any chance of bringing that back?

  57. Inyoface October 10, 2016 5:37 pm

We need a Vili type of costume mascot.

  58. Yoshi October 10, 2016 5:39 pm

    48…
Why some of you so hung up on Vili?

  59. cocobean October 10, 2016 6:16 pm

    52. Nostalgia that the players local players can remember.I made sure I used the word cameo. I am in no way advocating bringing Vili back as a mascot just a one time appearance. I know some people feel he’s burned too many bridges because none of his sons played here.

Most of the local players were in elementary school when Vili was in his prime they should have memories of him.

  60. BigWave96744 October 10, 2016 6:17 pm

Coach Rolo, did the officials explain why Ammon Barker was flagged for a TD dance, yet SJSU did not get penalized for a similar TD celebration?

  61. (Jesse)James October 10, 2016 6:36 pm

Diamonds808….#18. Apparently, the rule states any interaction with fans is automatically an unsportsmanlike penalty…Although I think it’s a stupid rule and have never seen it called before… ☺

  62. Uh4eva October 10, 2016 6:38 pm

A big shout out and mahalo to Tom Kitaguchi for all he does to help us mainland fans and to help UH. Tom tirelessly arranges for us to enjoy the road games. Even when he does not go to the games. Also Mahalo to Shawn Tanaka for arranging the AF-UH game tickets. See you in 2 weeks. Go Warriors.

  63. Carl October 10, 2016 6:40 pm

How much is being done to make sure there won’t be traffic on Saturday’s game like there was for the Pro Bowl?

  64. hilosuapman October 10, 2016 6:47 pm

    Coach Rolo?
With the under armor contract expiring is there any talk of a new company or maybe going back to Nike and to the Black uniforms you wore? Speaking of bringing it back, can we bring back the confetti during games?!

Congrats on another W, we can all sense the attitude of the players changing and its starting to hit the fans to. Sucks that no streaming games but I’ll be up listening here in the desert. I’m deployed and will be listening… no excuses fans, get your okole to the stadium! 30 K make it happen!

  65. 808_Ballin October 10, 2016 7:17 pm

Why no Warrior Walk this year?? I always thought it was a good idea to engage and connect with the fans attending the game.

  66. Ipu Man October 10, 2016 7:26 pm

Thank you for creating fun in the game for both players and fans.
But…how do you warn players not to hang too loose?
Can you reward them for fumbles caused and interceptions
and blocks resulting in tds? 🙂

  67. oneseason October 10, 2016 7:43 pm

#55 .. This sounds like the penalty, except it seems a stretch to say DB went into the stands … Page 97 of the NCAA Football Rules and Interpretations under Unsportsmanlike Conduct Fouls says … “Going into the stands to interact with spectators, or bowing at the waist after a good play” … http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/FR17.pdf

  68. clyde October 10, 2016 7:47 pm

Coach: What did you say to the blog host when you saw him walking toward the bench late in the game? It’s OK to give us the PG version.

  69. The Flying O October 10, 2016 8:13 pm

“My question is why should I go to watch the Warriors on Oahu and incur the cost if my friend’s son is not going to play. I can watch the game at my friend’s house for gratis.”

Whitey, then stay home and watch the game. Or tell your friend’s son to get good enough to be a starter.

  70. kev-1 October 10, 2016 8:27 pm

    #61 … GOOD QUESTION!!!

  71. tom-warriornation October 10, 2016 9:11 pm

thanks UH4eva! I want all Hawaii fans to get the best seats as close to our team bench as possible at road games; as the other teams usually gives the UH ticket office the worst seats. And have UH fans sit all together–it is no fun to sit in the middle of the other team’s fans. Also it pumps up our team to see so many UH fans sitting right behind them!

ps: when is Dru Brown, our OL & RB’s; & defense getting some MW awards?

  72. seewhy October 10, 2016 10:59 pm

    Congratulations to Rigoberto!

  73. seewhy October 10, 2016 11:00 pm

Coach, how many times have you had to discipline the blog host this season?

  74. whitey October 11, 2016 7:26 am

Wow, ST says ask question and Coach Rolovich will answer on Wednesday and I get my answer on Monday from the Coach or Coaches. Now that is speed. Thanks for a speedy reply. Now at least I know the blog names of some UH coaches.

  75. Former UH Athlete October 11, 2016 9:16 am

The Bow’s good form of late has been noticed by Vegas… UH is currently a 9 point favorite vs UNLV.

Don’t know why, but I that worries me slightly. Probably because it’s human nature to get a little complacent after a run of success. However, UNLV has a QB with only 2 starts under his belt as well. Sneed looked pretty good in their W over Fresno, but looked wretched in the L to SDSU last week.

  76. (Jesse)James October 11, 2016 9:39 am

#60….Oneseason…That’s the rule. I think the refs were being too liberal with their interpretation as it didn’t appear to me that Dru went “into the stands” but simply high-5d kids in the stands. Again, it think its a stupid rule.

Same goes for the AB penalty. He did a little move and gets flagged…. Other guys in other games during the day, as well as an SJSU player, did a hell of a lot more than that and no flags….

However, we have to be careful about that kind of stuff. Better to ere on the side of caution and just assume refs will flag us for any little thing so don’t give them any excuse. Like Coach Rolo said, it could/will come back to bite us in the butt one day… 🙂

  77. What??? October 11, 2016 9:39 am

FUHA are the people of LV happy with the job the coach is doing or has the honeymoon worn off?

  78. WarriorMojo October 11, 2016 9:41 am

O-Line has been playing fairly well, but any chance of Chris Posa getting PT? Does he have a red shirt option?
