Exit meeting

Spring football officially ends with this morning’s team meeting at the UH athletic complex.

The coaches will review the 15 practices of spring training, then detail the general goals leading to training camp in August.

UH is expected to release a post-spring depth chart before the spring semester ends on May 16.

This is that dreaded time where coach has to tell some scholie guys that they are not invited to fall camp. Happens every year.

  6. boolakanaka April 28, 2014 6:27 am

Actually while that is true for contemporary D1 programs, back in my day, even as a walkon, if you got an invite, and made it through spring and summer ball–you were on the team. Further, I don’t know one guy I played with who lost their scholly, cause they did pan out as a player–and there were more than a few of those.

  7. tommui April 28, 2014 6:47 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Good luck to all the players – thank you for your efforts and energy.

Interesting article about the facility upgrades and the money being invested into MW schools.

“Since 2006, Boise State has completed more than $82 million in projects, adding a skybox ($38 million), a football center ($22 million), an indoor practice facility ($10 million), a track/softball park ($6 million), a basketball complex ($3 million) and a football stadium expansion ($3 million).

Over the past five years, MWC brethren New Mexico has completed or announced plans for $75 million in projects; San Jose State $40 million; Wyoming $33 million; Colorado State $20 million; Utah State, Air Force and San Diego State more than $15 million per school; UNLV $13 million; and Fresno State $9 million.”

Idaho seems to be in the same boat as UNLV with APR issues.

“Idaho will not be eligible for a bowl game and will lose four hours of practice each week, time that must be devoted to study hall instead.”

    Good morning Tsaikos!

B$U has a softball park (?). They don’t even play softball. The Idaho Legislature should investigate it! πŸ™„ j/k

I think Boise State softball is in their second or third year since its creation?

    1. IF & WHEN A SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETE IS NOT INVITED TO THE FALL CAMP, WHAT HAPPENS TO THEIR SCHOLARSHIP…IS IT GIVEN TO SOMEBODY ELSE?

    2. HOW IS IT THAT ALL THE WAC SCHOOLS HAVE MILLIONS OF BUCKS TO SPEND ON NEW ATHLETICS FACILITIES OR UPGRADES TO EXISTING FACILITIES NEED HAWAII TO SUBSIDIZE THEIR TRAVEL TO AND FROM HAWAII? ARE THEY REALLY HAVING A HARD TIME SURVIVING IN THE SPORTS WORLD, OR ARE THEY KETCHIN US SUCKA?

  15. NorthShoreFan April 28, 2014 8:23 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

    Hah..we invest too….Sand Volleyball court……$4,000,000000000….

  16. st. anthony trojan April 28, 2014 8:25 am

JD…PAID with his job for us joining the MW….we got suckered…me thinks was to big a price to pay…should have gone independent…we have a bowl game to go to every year with a decent record…fill the schedule with the service academies…n humbolt state..n lewis & clark maybe…..

no money to upgrade…only time will tell the outcome…maybe 5 or 10 years from now sum will look back n say…was a good move…or what a ‘babooze’ move it was….only the ‘shadow knows’…as he serenades all with his rendition of ‘kane kane musume’…for whitey n his gang on maui he he he

  17. st. anthony trojan April 28, 2014 8:30 am

I know some on here like to deal in numbers…..wonder how much we spent last year …. n what is projected this year as travel expenses for MW teams ? ?

  18. NorthShoreFan April 28, 2014 8:48 am

    Waaaay Of Topic…

Merry Monarch was totally off the charts this year….just about every performance was one chicken skin moment for me.
Don’t know how they can judge the performances….all was excellent.
    All 500+ performers were winners.

  19. tommui April 28, 2014 9:10 am

    ST. ANTHONY TROJAN #16

JD had nothing to do with the $$ paid to the MW – he was playing the waiting game. The people that got us into the MW pushing JD out of the picture was Pres. Greenwood and Rocky Freitas.

They were worried about going down with the WAC and not getting on board quickly with the MW. Hence the deal.

However, there was supposedly an understanding that we would not have to pay travel money to teams that would join the MW after we got it … but we got stuck anyway with, I believe, BSU and SJ, who joined later.

  20. st. anthony trojan April 28, 2014 9:39 am

Yes Mr. TM….maybe me not make my self clear….when I say…’he paid for it’…lost his job over it…as he was iced out…of the deal n his job also…an in that case…. at least we know who
the ‘authors’ were for the paying of travel expenses of MW teams visiting here.

  21. boolakanaka April 28, 2014 9:41 am

14…Allan if a scholly player has his scholarship pulled, yes, it then goes back into the pool, and can be awarded to another player.

  23. SteveM April 28, 2014 10:30 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Repost from yesterday…

Planning to attend a UH Road Game this year? …even tentatively.
Please post here what game(s) you hope to attend or email me.
The 2014 Tsai-ko Road Game and get-together planner is posted at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/away14.html

This page let’s you know who else is going, who’s sitting where, what lodging location and time window for Cattle Calls. Also known pre and post tailgates.

If you are traveling by organized tour, such as Panda, be sure to include that for the list. (we once had two Tsai-kos who posted often but never met on the same tour and didn’t discover it until the flight home) πŸ™„

Only blog names are posted but I will send out a group email about a week before the actual game so you may optionally establish contact with each other. errrr…if I have your email addy.

  24. jeezy33 April 28, 2014 10:50 am

Apparently Damien Packer earned a scholarship… Hopefully he produces this year…

  25. hossana April 28, 2014 10:58 am

To all you yapping naysayers wondering how come other schools have monies to upgrade or build newer facilities, take a look at the support they get from their donations and this goes for other schools, also. Those fans are die-hard and win or lose they contribute and contribute heavily…here in Hawaii, fans are so fickle that they talk up a storm, complain, gripe and don’t even contribute or if they do, its such a small pittance that its hilarious…..stop yapping and complaining…if we had diehard fans that really contributed, then we could have the same type of modern facilities but we have couch potatoes that only look for the negative…griping about the coaching, being in the wrong conference, should disband div. 1 football…just so petty and one wonders why we don’t even have soap in the shower stalls…..win or lose we should be supporting the program…it takes time and patience but evidently, here on this rock, they want winners overnight…give me a break…it takes perseverance and dedication and timeless patience and open pocketbooks……i know, people will write in and complain about my comments saying why should they support a loser….well, those are the people that are losers themselves….oh, well…..life goes on….

  26. Andrew April 28, 2014 11:04 am

    25.

Donations and fan support plays a big part of it but I think most of their funding is coming from the support of their state governments that decided to heavily increase spending on University athletics.

  27. Shoko April 28, 2014 11:29 am

In addition to state subsidies, private and corporate donations and increased student fees are funding these projects.

  28. Inyoface April 28, 2014 11:29 am

Just bought a jersey online today, I’m not a big donor but try to do my part.

  29. Andrew April 28, 2014 11:39 am

Changing the revenue recognition situation at the stadium will be a good place to start for the State.

  30. Shadow April 28, 2014 11:48 am

My sentiments too Hosanna (#25). Good post!

  31. jeezy33 April 28, 2014 12:25 pm

    25. Yeah because the die-hard fans at Oregon sure put up a lot of money to get that engine running… I’m sure the fans at Oklahoma St. forked out a lot of their own money too..

AD is the key man in charge of seeking big donors to raise funding for the athletic program. No one said it was an easy job..

  32. PONO April 28, 2014 12:59 pm

I thought the TC Ching foundation donation would get the momentum going but then they F’ed it up with delays and the costs rose substantially. Our whole state can’t get it right.

  33. jimmy the lock April 28, 2014 1:46 pm

Spring fling is over, time to get ready for some summer luvin.

What’s happening to the teams that play with bats and balls? Slippery slope.

Anyone interested in seeing vids of the halau performance head on over to the K5 website.

  34. ai-eee-soos April 28, 2014 1:55 pm

Keeping up with the fresno boo’dogs .. maybe old news to some, but …

Fresno State: Tim DeRuyter has received a contract extension taking him through the 2018

season. The extension will also double his base pay to $1.4 million, with the ability to earn

up to $1.685 million through bonus’ and incentives.

  35. ai-eee-soos April 28, 2014 1:57 pm

    … and guaranteed, too …

Fresno State: Tim DeRuyter has officially signed a five-year contract extension through the 2018 season. He will earn $1.4 million in base salary in 2014, with an increase of $50,000 each following season. The buyout he would owe if he resigned before the end of the 2014 season is $2.8 million. That decreases to $1.4 million, $1 million and $700,000 in 2017. He agreed to the terms in January. According to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman,

the entire deal is guaranteed, and DeRuyter would be owed all of his unpaid salary if he was let go.

  36. gobows April 28, 2014 2:17 pm

    5

Can you recall the last player to lose a scholraship that was in good standing within team and school requirements?

The not invited are players beyond the 105 limit. Dont think any scholarship players are pegged that low on the coaches charts.

  37. st. anthony trojan April 28, 2014 2:55 pm

Hossana….very good point….however….it is the part of the UHAD to reach out to these people you speak off…n to try n start correcting their ‘miss-steps’ along the way…

There are n continue to have people down there…by ST’s account…who goes the extra mile n more when asked…n not complain…n we know what the color of there blood…n so many more on here…who no one can question what the color of their heart….

But when we start to look at the big n overall picture….seems to me ne way…those in control are 2 insecure in their work….to make changes…cuz their pay check is involved…

Look at Pono’s # 32 comment….read it carefully…I can only guess why that was allowed to go on…can never expect that to happen in the private sector…without it having multiple lawsuits before Mr. TM….

Advice is so very easy to give…but so very difficult to accept n follow…n that is why the old timer Hawaiians invented the word ‘Pakiki head’…

The first order of business is…FILL THE STADIUM… I mentioned that before…n had comments…can’t be done n reasons why…n I agree with some of then….nut pray tell…who would you hire as your marketing manager….someone of the mindset…that will move heaven n earth to try n fill it….or sumone tell you…nah…it can’t be done….can you please look closely at the difference…even it it was not filled…that was the goal…na positive person should be the one to hire your business…bar non…cuz you n your investors will at least have a fighting chance…The alternative that was espoused was what…close the yellow section…but thank god that was changed…

See about advice…surely many on here might say…take my advice n shut up…see me is ‘pakiki head’ also….that how it is…like giving Fen Jai advice to be ‘ nice’n accept my bet…it never happen..,BUT STAY POSITIVE….WE JUST NEED MORE POSITIVE THEN NEGATIVE HERE

    IMUA

Max you would look good in a warrior uniform!!!

  39. JF Byers April 28, 2014 3:26 pm

donors have walked away. Clarence TC Ching fiasco of being delayed and costs adding up while losing amenities only adds fuel to the fire of discussion and public opinion that donated funds at uh are not in the best of hands especially with large projects as these. What was once a shining achievement is now a β€˜black eye” on the university.

  40. jimmy the lock April 28, 2014 3:26 pm

Most anyone would look good in a Warrior uniform.

  41. st. anthony trojan April 28, 2014 3:43 pm

Here is a small example what I mean….click on this…is the site to sign in to UHAD.

NO WHERE ON THAT PAGE CAN I REGISTER….
IF I AM IN JAPAN…ALASKA..GERMANY THEY GIVE ME A 808 NUMBER TO CALL….

The thinking up there is Hawaii only….like we don’t have fans in Vegas or CA.
or ne where else on this earth…global thinking….is not in their dictionary or computer…
the one that made that site should be fired…cuz in internet marketing he/she must haa whole bunch off ‘incompletes’…

Go to e-bay….first thing you see top of page left side….sign jn or register….Amazon…even have a pop up to register…..

UHAD…E- BAY…AMAZON…N ALL OTHERS….all doind the same thing…they are trying to sell a product…we just not doing a good job….n shame…we have a IT school that should be teaching
some thing useful….thanks to boya jr…at least he is trying to rectify that…hope n pray he is not rejected…but my suspicions getting the better of me here….lets see ne way in a week or so if ne thing changes…

  42. bpiccolo April 28, 2014 3:46 pm

No one in their right mind is going to give money to an organization that can’t handle it. The delays are beyond embarrassing. UH is in a tailspin and unless accountability becomes the #1 priority , UH will keep sliding and the momentum will continue to increase. No one is minding the store.

  43. Don Weir April 28, 2014 4:21 pm

Tsaikos Going to San Diego for the UH/SDSU game
Good friends own Filippis in Little Italy: an original sicilian style pizza house.
If any of you are in town that Friday afternoon care to join up for some great pizza (they also have pasta and salads lets make this happen.
If we meet at say 4:30 I can have the entire patio section (under cover) reserved for us if the numbers are there. If not then they will reserve a number of tables for our use.
Please put this on the calendar and as we get closer will work up some numbers and see what works.

#41 st. anthony trojan…I don’t know what you are asking to sign-in at UHAD. Please clarify. Do you mean you want to get to a UHAthletics site? That site address is: http://hawaiiathletics.com/index.aspx
If you wish to contact the AD, his email address is found at the hawaiiathletics site. It is: athdir@hawaii.edu
Ben Jay’s tel # is (808) 956-7301. All are found under Staff Directory.

    Thanks though 4 ur concern…mahalo…

  49. d1shima April 28, 2014 7:27 pm

Geez….I’m tired or watching Spring games!

    How long yet?

    😳

    Great Evening All.

  50. d1shima April 28, 2014 7:30 pm

Remembering those in SEC Land who are dealing with the aftermath of another day of devastating tornadoes.

I guess some things are more important than football, eh?

  51. old808 April 28, 2014 7:42 pm

I do agree if I was a big donor to the UH, I would be very concerned with how the donation is handled. The TC Ching complex should have been completed years ago. The mismanagement at the UH has to stop and the culture needs to change. Too many bosses trying to run the show.

  52. old808 April 28, 2014 7:43 pm

The business marketing majors should do a thesis on the business practices at the UH. It would make a hell of a thesis.

  53. papajoe2 April 28, 2014 8:01 pm

Aloha Dennis Kamakahi. God bless you and your ohana.

  54. nutmegger April 28, 2014 8:18 pm

St anthony trojan identified two important points
    1) fill stadium
    2) web site deficiencies

The web site could use some improvements:
    a) I think the point st anthony trojan was making about registering is that it provides a mailing list of those that are clearly interested in UH sports
    b) web site is essentially one directional now – communications from UH out. A little interactivity could provide a forum for marketing ideas to fill the stadium or raise money

  55. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2014 9:49 pm

I was really surprised that the Ching complex jumped from $10 million to $17 million. With Ching’s initial $5 million investment, what was the interest on that deposit? And was the interest used to pay off other projects (i.e. debts)? I can see cost overruns of a million, maybe β€” MAYBE β€” two million. But $7 million? Really? Did the cost of concrete go up that much? It can’t be the labor, because they took their sweet-ass time putting the thing together. And am I the only one who thinks the complex isn’t that aesthetically pleasing? I guess they could get some paint. Hmmm. Anybody selling paint for $5 million?

  56. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2014 9:52 pm

It wouldn’t be so annoying except we all got to stare at three, maybe four, workers not do too much for a long time. Every rainy practice in the fall, we’d watch the project. And not much was happening.
On the other hand, go to the third-story parking deck at Ala Moana. Then look at the area that used to be Sears and the ewa parking lot. They must have 100 workers on that project. I saw one guy whose only job was to sweep dust that blew on the steel plate. Because dust is light and there’s, you know, wind in Hawaii, that guy spent a long time just sweeping a small area. But at least he was out there.

  57. st. anthony trojan April 28, 2014 10:28 pm

#42 mr. bpiccolo…spot on….however the problem ends there…after that it is a great big black hole…that no one will ever find out whose responsibility it was to see that project to fruition n on time…

Seems to me mr. BJ tried to look at the plans…or something of that nature…or look into the whole thing…but was denied…wish sumone correct me on this…..see the same problem….mr. anonymous rears its ugly head…n so it ends…who denied and or rejected him…does he/she have name…we can’t correct ne thing unless we know where to go or who to see…

We worst then the Malaysian government…not even knowing where to look…same with us….cuz…he (BJ) was turned away…(please correct me if wrong) as it was the best of my recollection on that matter…

  58. boya_jr April 28, 2014 10:29 pm

Fact: construction costs have gone through the roof over the past 24 months. 20%+ on the West Coast. Some of the ineptness was caused by the market. If this were a market rate project, one could point to the increased rent, NOI thus helping to absorb the higher costs with a higher valuation. However, this was a public facility that doesn’t make any money, so no good. New stadium would need higher ticket prices, if this logic follows.

  59. st. anthony trojan April 28, 2014 10:37 pm

    # 55…you remember…them dudes got caught with their hands in the cookie jar at the airport…with kickbacks in contracts etc….for me…this smells like the same thing…maybe your paper can investigate…

7 million can wipe out a lot of debt…maybe it was the plan all along…put 4 workers n stretch it out a few years…hope 4 another bowl game…. away…then jump on th gravy train…he he he possible…believable ??

  60. SteveM April 28, 2014 10:44 pm

    RE: #56

ST — your worker description reminded me of K.K. Kaumanua’s 1960’s comedy job description of the “water boss”. His job was to bring a cup of water or two to the stevedores working the holds of the old cargo ships. I can’t find a video of the Water Boss skit, but here’s a sample of the legendary pidgin english comedian…

Hossana, I could not agree with you more. I have for several years continued to increase my donation to Na Koa, I will be there for two games and the contribution comes with game tickets…..no thanks I will pay my way. I support this program and this team passionately and will continue to do so. Every little bit helps and the ease of doing it on line makes it simple…..lets pick this thing up and get it going in the right direction—-Go Warriors
