Elimimian invited to Bills’ rookie camp; Gansz dies
Former UH linebacker Solomon Elimimian today accepted an invitation to the Buffalo Bills’ rookie camp this week. The camp runs Thursday through Sunday. If he does well, he might receive a free-agent contract.

David Veikune is looking at a big payday. Last year’s 52nd pick — Quentin Groves, a defensive end from Auburn — had signed a four-year deal worth $3.3 million, of which $1.6 millon was guaranteed.
At UH today, Veikune waited for his girlfriend to pick him up.

Frank Gansz, regarded as one of the top special teams coaches — and a frequent speaker at UH camps and meetings — died today. He was on June Jones’ staff at SMU.
I spoke with JJ today, and he said Gansz “went in for a knee replacement (surgery). He never came out of it. It’s a sad deal. He was doing fine. That’s the shock about it.”

Chase signed as a free agent, Zorn didn’t draft him. From Washington’s perspective, getting Chase Daniels without using a draft pick (with little or no money to him unless he makes the team) is a great way to add competition at the QB position. I just hope they don’t split Colt’s reps in preseason with him.

It is interesting that the draft pick Miami used to pick a player that they want to compete with Bess was obtained from their trade of Samson. Teams normally don’t take players in the 4th round without thinking they will play soon, so this training camp will have a huge 3-player battle (Camarillo was ahead of Bess last season, and they now added Hartline) for the slot position.
Homey- Nah. I have respect for Boise St. football, and root for them when they aren’t playing us. I liked how classy they were when we beat them here 2 seasons ago. Although, the whole crybaby thing about wanting to get into the MWC knocked them down a couple notches in my book. Fresno St and BYU on the other hand… f#*k them!

I’m with YpoWarrior & others in wondering what’s happening with Adam Leonard. With all of the supposedly sharp scouts & player personnel out there, why aren’t there 1 or 2 akamai teams who were alert enough to recognize his play the last 2 years & especially his junior year? It’s an absolute travesty that he’s not getting an automatic shot. I’m confident Solly will make it in Buffalo.

Sorry to be devils advocate but I feel that one reason we haven’t seen Adam Leonard get any invitations is because he did not have as productive a senior season as he did his junior and in the pro-day he did not make a big impact. I feel that Adam will get an invitation to a camp but might not make it because it seems that he is going downhill. JMHO

Great news to all our football boys making it on NFL rosters. Veikune is well deserving of a big paycheck, he is one of the best lineman to come out of Hawaii and will be a terror as a rush end/linebacker for the Browns! I bet we’ll see Mouton at the very least on special teams returning kicks or punts this year for the Titans. Jake Ingram in New England, nuff said…I bet he wins the long snapper job hands down! Josh Leonard should’ve got drafted to but I’m happy he signed with the Texans. Jameel Dowling in Arizona with Aaron Francisco teaching him the ropes, I could see him making it. Solomon Elimimian to the Buffalo Bills, I hope he works hard and shows them that he’s a baller.

I still think Adam Leonard will get a shot somewhere. He was a bit bulky and had some slow times at the Pro-Day but regardless he did well in the linebacker drills. I felt with the skills he displayed in the drills and his production over the 4 years will eventually land him somewhere. I think the only thing I would say is hurting Adam is his speed and agility. He seemed a bit stiff in the mobility department during drop back and change of direction drills somewhat but to me he has game speed.

Even with Inoke in the backfield is it LWJ’s time to shine??? Bryant Moniz…will he unseat someone on the QB depth chart??? More high school players showed up for the scrimmage (high school track meets were held during the Junior Day, so some recruits had to miss it). Mac, JD, and Chancellor Hinshaw spoke to the group, and then the players met with position coaches.

besides using the fly swatter the keeds got to meet unc BG. he da man who teachers the wack’um technique.
the spring game revealed two things about this team. the offense is looks a lot better than last spring, and the the defense needs much improvement. i still don’t understand why our corners play soo far off the ball. even on 3rd and short, our corners are 5-10 yards back, and still backpedal off the snap. on a couple of plays, we just ran the slot into the flats, and it was an easy 8-10 yard gain everytime.

It is sad that they would have Warrior fans missed the opening home game to go on that cruise! I’m guessing that wouldn’t be a problem for some fans–the D-IAA games draw less fans than the other games.
They probably will get some of the casual fans to go on the cruise. Hopefully it isn’t like the Oregon State game where 2/3 of the people around where I was sitting (in the UH fan section) never made noise to cheer on the Warriors and over 1/2 were gone by halftime. Some people said that it was too hot and left the stands to watch the game on TVs by the concession stands…I saw people leaving early in the first quarter, even when UH was winning!
Wow! got to run…better start dinner now…will be back laters…got some more “stuffs” to say…

Mac explained how they limited their D in the Warrior Bowl, running base packages without any of the blitz packages that are central to UH’s D.
About how their D had trouble stopping the offense, Mac said:
“We didn’t game-plan, we played base. We can fix all that up. All we need is 11 guys to run to the football and hit somebody. When we split them up, it gets a little thinner.”
Gotta go doctor’s…don’t want to get the swine flu since I was around (J)J this weekend!

Das an easy fix for Coach Tormey and Miano. They was just playing base 4-3 defense anyway. I don’t think they were focusing too much on bump and run and jamming guys up on the line. Regardless, I hear you on the secondary being sketchy right now. They have time to work out, learn the playbook, practice, so I’m sure Coach Miano and Tormey going have the secondary ready to play. Plus planny freshmen and redshirts was playing so given time they will be au’ryte. Plus get Aaron Brown (JC Safety) coming in the summer, I think he going be playing right away.

The MOST important thing to me from the Spring, even more important than the improvement for the OL, is that UH got through the Spring without suffering too many injuries. That is always a worry, and I thought that the injury that Estes had before spring practice last year really hurt the development of the OL…especially since he was a captain and the returning vet on the OL.
The coaches did a great job in moving the tests away from the start of spring, and the OL was fairly healthy this spring.

One tennis group from Hawaii sat in the UH section and I sat with some of them during the tailgate before the game run by the UH Alumni Association. Let me just say that I called some of the people “casual fans” because at the tailgate they mentioned that they didn’t go to UH home games…they didn’t even watch many Warrior games on TV!
I wonder how you guys could see the game. I couldn’t see what was happening during the game because had too many real, big kids with nametags walking around in front of me. When I recognized one of them he said that they had just come from Jr. day with the Hawaii coaches. Kids seem to be getting bigger and bigger every year, I felt quite intimmidated by all those big young men.
I heard that the record for most malasadas sold on a Saturday was broken this past weekend.

I hear everyone talk about having the O-line improve this year. Can anyone tell us what was wrong with the O-line last year? I mean I know that they gave up a lot of sacks last year, but why? What were they doing or not doing that prevented them from excelling as a unit? If we know what they were doing wrong then perhaps we can fix those problems and change the way we approach our scheme, techniques, fundamentals, attitude? I’m just asking because I don’t have any answers. I’m just an old guy who may need glasses soon because people ask me how the O-line did, and I can’t answer because I can’t see anyone on the field. It all looks like a big green blur to me. With that being the case, I just socialize with anyone nearby.

Cougars banged up D leads Washington State.
Despite having just 22 healthy players on defense, that side of the ball controlled Washington State’s spring game.
The offense managed just 231 total yards, including 69 yards rushing on 22 carries.
After gaining 189 yards on 25 carries in the first scrimmage, the running game fell silent in the final two, totalling 121 on 40 carries (3.0 yards per tote).
The key for the Cougars heading into the offseason?
Getting healthy. A significant number of starters on both sides of the ball were on the sidelines for all or much of the spring.
They’ll be ready come September 12 at Seattle.

Washington State has my boy Jimmy Montgomery at running back. He transfered from Cal and redshirted this past season due to transfer rules. He is very dangerous in the backfield and if he gets loose can ruin a defense.

A little personnel evaluation perhaps, but not the real sense of your #1 O goin against your #1 D, like most teams during spring.
When all is said and done–WSU will be a tough-team to play early and we face a legit challenge.
Hawaii, traditionally, starts slow.
Pay attn to off-season training and trust your eyes when camp opens in AUG.
If we win at Seattle–we can boast—but for now, its time to get lean n mean!

Yes, indeed. Not one but two sets of Mah Jongg. We’ll bring our set in addition to KK’s. We need mentors who know the game. After buying the game, I was intimidated by the number of tiles, the unrecognizable kanji and complicated instructions…so I closed the case and never opened it again. So yes, there are many Tsaikos who want to learn. If we take turns learning, by the end of this season, we’ll have competitors, for sure.

Speakin about John Estes, I fell for this 4-year starter when he was an under-weight true-frosh OLM who labored in the trenches and redshirted quietly.
You could see it comin. Hard worker, genetically-wired with all the great-stuff for the NFL.
Now, big John doesnt say much and leads by example…which brings me to my point—he got yellow-flagged w too many personals last year.
John is just too damn good for that action and Im hoping Gordie can communicate to Estes what is required to make him have the huge senior season we are all rootin for him to have….and to set a quiet example–for others to follow.

So lets take a look at what WF2 is talking about. Is it really true that Hawaii is a slow starter? Listed below is the breakdown of each season since 1999, broken into three parts. Start of season, mid-season, and end of season. First list is a breakdown of win/losses, then totals for those years, and then a winning percentage breakdown by start, mid, or end of season results.

As we can see, it is apparent that WarriorFanny2 really knows what he is talking about. The topic of discussion should be, what is the driver of this disparity in winning percentage when broken down into sections during the season. Is it because of the easier WAC teams during the mid-season? The heavy duty BCS teams at the beginning of the season? Is it the way we handle camp? I don’t know, because I can’t see the field. I’m just asking questions.

With respect to our Sept 12th game in Seattle and in the context of my post, since you are jumpin on late and didnt share in the orginal discussion yesterday….talking about playing early on the road or at home against quality opponents….playing WSU early does not work to our advantage according to history–the original subject matter of discussion.
We lost last year @ Florida and @ Corvalis early.
We were fortunate @ Ruston in 2007 (45-44) and lost at Tuscaloosa and Boise State in 2006.
In 2005 we lost to USC and @MSU.
2004 we lost to Florida Atlantic and @Rice.
In 2003 we lost @ USC and UNLV.
In 2002 we lost @ BYU.
In 2001 we lost early @Nev and at home to Rice.
And whom can forget our 2000 home opening loss to Portland State, than @Utep and home against Rice.

Less injury and better techniques and two deep in every position for the O-line. That should provide better protection for the Q-back in passing situations — even 1/2 second more with QBacks who can make reads faster and get rid of the ball in less time should make a world of a difference.

Still don’t know what to make of the Chase Daniel signing. Campbell was Gibbs’ QB and only has one more year left. Collins is at the end of his career. That leaves Colt and Chase. I guess it’s just give Colt some competition and Synder loves shiny and new. Colt’s the better QB. I would hope they’re building for the future, but with Synder, who knows. ..

My attitude still is and will always be, “anybody, anyplace, anywhere…I back down from no one”. Not Florida, not USC, not Alabama, no one. I’ve heard a lot of people give coach Pat Hill grief for his attitude of playing anyone, anyplace, anytime. But I agree with coach Hill. Back down from no one. Have your players adopt that attitude and then have them prepare and play with that attitude.

Actually, Chase at the Redskins now makes a little more sense. With Todd Collins about retire and Jason Cambell on his final year.. howzit everyone just back from the OIA championship. congrats to PC and Kailua good game. PC champs for third consecutive time. It was Kailua game to win because had PC bottled up most of the time. PC won on a balk and misplayed ball to outfield which put the winning run on third. had to be there to believe the final out come. cishigo has nothing to complain about, plate up made a good call which the replay confirmed.

I remember watching an interview conducted by Bob Costas and he was interviewing John Wooden. The question he answered was, “how do you account for so many national trophies in a short time and so many in a row?,” “How do you motivate them?” He said something to a tune, “The past is the past (glory) and there are no gaurantees in the future…what matters is today…how you practice, play, consider each other as a team, etc.” I think what was special about UH’s perfect season was that people cared everyday. If you have that kind of players and community of supporters, the past and future is pretty irrelevant, because there will be a tradition of excellence and you would be carving your future. Summer Cycle good…shooting for stars everyday better. By the way Pride and WF2 are great commentators (like many others)…I learn so much from them everyday.

I met Chancellor Hinshaw’s brother at the Safeco field tour last fall. It was just by chance. I was wearing all my UH gear and he saw that and came up to me and we started talking. I think he’s a retired General or some other high ranking military man. Anyways, he said she loves her sports and loves challenges and has always been the smart one. Oh, and she really loves her hat too.

Dunno about the word ‘mental approach’.
It is too vaque and an over-used term, like motivation.
Mental approach will not be developed during our 3-game road trip, but rather during our last training-cycle and camp period leading up to the season.
Our summer-cycle training period combined with a successful camp will form the bases for our team’s mental approach.
If our players aint-in-shape and cannot execute–their mental approach is already flawed and like the swine flu can infestate the team with negative mentality.
Assuming for the sake of argument these two factors are positive then it becomes a management thing–much like JJ did in 2007. One game at a time.
A lot depends on the chemistry-interface between coaches and players developed in the off-season and into camp.
This year will be interesting for two reasons–MAC has had one year under his belt to evaluate what worked and didnt.
MAC will be a sophomore in 2009 coming off a break-even season (7-7) in ’08.
Lookin back at his predecessors starting with Dick Tomey:
Bob Wagner had the best sophomore record, going 5-7 in ’87 and 9-3 in ’88– included were book-end victories over nationally ranked Iowa and Oregon. Both at home.
Ironically, JJ had the worst–from a-turn-around in ’99 (9-4) to a flop in 2000 (3-9).
Next–Gordie Shaw and Chris Tormey.
These two veteran coaches are mentoring key units in our O-trench and on our D-backside. Problematic units in 2008.
Tormey will also handle the 3rd and equally important phase of warrior football-Special Teams.
The fusion of these two coaches on staff and the template of
experience they bring will weigh heavily in both our final training-cycle and into and including camp.
Mental approach?

Nice mention of David Veikune here. For those critics that said that Veikune was drafted a round early, the article mentions that several teams were looking to draft Veikune just after he was taken (which would have still been in the 2nd round) if Cleveland didn’t take him.

Last Sunday I saw a cricket match. It is IPL Tournament in South Africa. Its rooking.
I think that They tried to trade for veteran Jay Cutler, and Saturday, they tried to move up for Mark Sanchez. They ended up with Brian Orakpo, who will play strong side linebacker on running downs and end on obvious passing downs. Any one agree with it.
