Developmental stage

Head coach Norm Chow said that after five spring practices the defense continues to make “strides” while the offense is still adjusting to the switch to the pro-set schemes.

Following yesterday’s practice, Chow said: “The attitude was good. The hustle was good. I thought offensively it was a little sloppy. … It’s all new. It doesn’t click in right now. It’s going to take time.”

Chow said there is concern about the depth of an offensive line that lost six seniors from the 2011 team. Offensive tackle Levi Legay has not been able to practice because of an injury. Offensive tackle Sean Shigematsu has recovered from last year’s knee surgery. He did well in drills yesterday before being shaken up in one of the later sessions. He is expected to be ready for Saturday’s practice.

The Warriors added a fullback to the scheme, but running backs Joey Iosefa and John Lister have played so well, Chow is considering using both in tandem as hybrid backs.

“Lister is playing pretty good,” Chow said. “I like him as a running back. He might be a fullback.”

Lister said: “I’m trying to progress from last year, taking what I learned last year and applying it now. I’m trying to get into the lineup the best I can.”

Lister focused on improving his hands (for pass catching and blocking) and quickness during offseason workouts. He lost 10 pounds, including “some of the bad weight,” and now weighs 205, which has helped his agility and quickness. His direction remains unchanged. Lister is still a north-south runner.

“I’m not trying to run around people,” Lister said. “Hopefully that mentality works out.”

* * * * *

• Practice jerseys come in all the Crayola colors. Yesterday, the Warriors introduced the yellow jerseys, which are worn by players recovering from injuries. Tight end Darius Bright and receiver Allen Sampson were in yellow yesterday. Both made some nice catches in non-contact drills. (As previously noted, quarterbacks now wear red jerseys in practice. Not sure what will become of the orange jerseys the QBs used to wear.)

• The Warriors are essentially running a 5-2 defense  that has multiple options. George Daily-Lyles, Brenden Daley and Justin Vele have been standouts as inside linebackers.

• The Warriors have been rotating the defensive secondary. Brian Clay has been used as a cornerback, safety and nickelback. Mike Sellers has been a corner and nickel. John Hardy-Tuliau was a safety last week, and a corner this week. Bubba Poueu-Luna has drawn raves for his work at safety.

• Linebacker Darryl McBride suffered a sprained left ankle.

• It’s open casting at punt returner. Among the candidates: Scott Harding, Samson Anguay, Trevor Davis, Chris Gant, Donnie King.

    5-2?

He throwin in one Munsta too?

But, not all da time, eh?

Chow envisions playing against other Pro set offenses?

Great against run offenses or short yardage. Perilous against a pass happy offense. Unless of course Chow has the utmost confidence in the DB’s and the pass rush.

The two ends are stand-ups. They can drop back ends into coverage or use one or both as pass-rushers.

I think that’s the objective. To apply pressure on the QB, instead of sitting back and getting burned all day by receivers, slots, tightends, and running backs crossing the field.

    #15

    Tomorrow at 10:00-10:30am.

  18. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 7:51 am

Practice is at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow. There’s a coaches’ clinic to follow. All are welcome.

  19. el burro sabio April 6, 2012 7:51 am

ST, who is working out at nose guard/nose tackle/whatever the position is called in this defense?

  20. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 7:54 am

What’s interesting is some of the guys who signed in February have been attending practice. I’ve heard Steven Lakalaka has been attending, but I can’t be sure. Word is he cut his hair.

  21. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 7:55 am

Sometimes they go with two DTs. Hanohano and Correa have been the mainstays. Moses Samia is getting a lot of work as a true nose guard. I think Saui Matagiese has some sort of a knee issue. He should be good to go next week.

  22. polywarrior4life April 6, 2012 7:56 am

Nose tackle is more like an inside tackle shading the center on either side.

  23. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 7:57 am

Calen Friel also has been in the rehab group.

You’ll have to ask our blog contributor why he’s working out but not practicing.

  24. polywarrior4life April 6, 2012 7:59 am

I do like the concept to pressure the qb and not let him sit in the pocket, continuing to pick apart the secondary.

  27. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 8:03 am

  32. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 8:10 am

I agree with the St. Louis radio guy on the Sports Animals. MLB has done a really poor promotional job. I mean, the Marlins and Cardinals play a one-game series? The first MLB game of the season, in Japan, is not nationally televised? Meanwhile, the NFL, which hasn’t played a game in two months, is grabbing headline after headline. Sheesh. Does MLB need to put a bounty on somebody?

  41. slenzi April 6, 2012 8:33 am

It great that Coach is continually evaluating what each player brings to the game, and using all the skills that a player can contribute, rather than limiting him to one thing. This will pay dividends when the injuries start to stack up.

  49. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 8:53 am

    Yep. Gas prices are crazy.

But this, too, shall pass. That’s what happens when oil is a futures investment. It goes up, it goes down. When we had the crazy rain a few weeks ago, at some point it had to stop.

When things are darkest, there’s always hope for better days.

    That’s today’s lesson.

And, of course, proud uncle DPK was there.

  54. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 8:59 am

I would mention others but I’m not sure if their bosses knew they were there.

  55. WWF April 6, 2012 9:02 am

Can we get Corey Paclebar a look at punt returner? He has that “make you miss” ability that Chad Owens has.

  56. RedZone April 6, 2012 9:03 am

In the best game I have seen UH play against USC they used a 5-3 defense with Tom Tuinei being one of the anchors. I think Moses will be a rock in the middle.

    I like this lesson:

A man is sent with mercenaries to capture a notorious jewel thief in forests of South America. In their pursuit, they came across children in a village playing with rubies the size of strawberries… The thief was throwing the stolen jewels away..

Some people have no incentives or reasons for being criminals or problems for society..They can’t be bought, reasoned with, or dealt with. Words of wisdom: “some men just want to watch the world burn”.

How did they eventually catch him? Burn the forest down.

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid April 6, 2012 9:08 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

This offense puts the “run” back into “running back”. We have some good candidates there.

    Enjoyed practice yesterday.

Today’s article in the SA about Dunnachie is good one. Punting schemes have put the “boom” back into “booming”. Saw that yesterday too. Had forgotten just how well Alex can make the ball go “BOOM”. Some truly towering punts in one drill. 😯

  60. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:09 am

    WWF:

Paclebar might or might not be a candidate. I didn’t see him there, but Allen Sampson also wasn’t returning punts. I don’t think they’ll pick returners until training camp, anyway.

  61. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:09 am

    DPK:

I’m now having flashbacks to your Boom goes the Dynamite drawings.

  62. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:11 am

Have coaches not learned anything from history?

Bobby Petrino probably will lose his job not for the act, but for the coverup.

    Somewhere Nixon is tsk-tsking.

  63. Da Punchbowl Kid April 6, 2012 9:17 am

    Stephen,

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

After reading ur fine article about the punting game, makes one appreciate that one drill we saw all the more. Boomin’ punts, racin’ recievers and runnin’ gunners all rolled up into one drill… nice!

  64. Da Punchbowl Kid April 6, 2012 9:19 am

Ran across this – there’s some purty smart folks who post here…

    http://apennings.com/media-strategies/why-i-am-a-tsaiko-football-media/

  65. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:19 am

What I like about practices, particularly evident in the punt-coverage drills, is players don’t get scolded for making mistakes. They get scolded for not giving maximum effort. Dropping a punt was not as bad as picking up the ball and then jogging.

  66. al April 6, 2012 9:22 am

good to see moses samia rising to the top. i liked his passion last year when thrown in to the fire.

coming out of st. louis school, i thought he should have given baseball the first shot at his athleticism. scouts were drooling at his potential. but, the upside that has been coupled with his passion for football has proved me wrong.

  67. al April 6, 2012 9:23 am

“i need to hide!!!”, shuddered the tree as uncle dpk approached.

  68. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:23 am

    Al:

He’s a catcher. He knows about leverage. And catcher’s are probably the smartest guys on a baseball team.

  69. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:25 am

    DPK is looking good.

He was a like a billy goat maneuvering up and down that hill.

  70. Da Punchbowl Kid April 6, 2012 9:25 am

True dat, Stephen. As another fan pointed out, across the field, every position, every drill = high energy.

    Very exciting times.

  71. A-House April 6, 2012 9:25 am

are we finally going to see Dunnachie really “unleash” his punts?

dang, been waiting 4 years – ever since I saw the video of his 70 yarders!!!

so, beware all you punt returners who will face the Warriors this season – watch the ball sail over your heads!!!!!!!!

  72. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:28 am

When Mat McBriar was at UH, sometimes I couldn’t wait for a third-down failure. It was amazing to watch him punt.

  73. Da Punchbowl Kid April 6, 2012 9:28 am

#67 😆 Saw ur guy at the field meeting Uncle Stretch.

  74. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:29 am

Grasso was fun to watch, too. I swear he sometimes tried to punt short because he wanted a chance to make a tackle.

  75. warriorfan April 6, 2012 9:31 am

st how that ol (loyd) doing ?

  76. RedZone April 6, 2012 9:32 am

Paipai in an interview said that because of the uptempo practice they are getting in more reps.

  77. RedZone April 6, 2012 9:33 am

I saw Alex kick it 70 yards at the stadium while practicing before a game.

  78. Da Punchbowl Kid April 6, 2012 9:35 am

    Colonel –

Don’t think you’ll be dissapointed. You like da boom, we gots da boom! 😉

  79. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:39 am

Frank Loyd Jr. is doing very well. He’s getting a lot reps at left tackle. He looks to be in pretty good shape.

  80. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:40 am

I don’t know what gets said in meetings, but the practices are very organized. There’s no confusion about substitutions.

  81. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 9:42 am

When McBride went down yesterday, he was rolling around on the field. Teammates tried to help. Instead, they were ordered away so the training staff could attend to McBride on the field. The line of scrimmage was then moved so the Warriors could continue practicing away from McBride.

  82. Steve April 6, 2012 9:42 am

ST, no confusion about substitutions, do you think would hold true when they go up against a no huddle team? Those kinds of teams gave the Warriors some trouble last year.

  83. warriorfan April 6, 2012 9:43 am

Thanks Hope you and your family have a great Easter keep up the great work

  84. RedZone April 6, 2012 9:50 am

  85. RedZone April 6, 2012 9:54 am

USC may be entering the fall with only 2 tailbacks. Tre Madden who they moved to tailback from linebacker tore a ligament in his left knee.

Game decision to be made in 40 minutes according to head coach Bob Coolen.

Sun is out but snow remains.

Also some alums drove from Cali to Utah just to watch this series… hope it plays but but doesnt look good.

Would HATE to lose a game while in conference play. FSU and BYU recently lost a game each due to weather cancellation in Fresno.

  88. d1shima April 6, 2012 10:03 am

5-2? Wow! Somebuddy’s been watching Remember the Titans!

You guys keep talking a bout “boom” this and that, next thing you know we’ll see a full house backfield and a Boom Series!

  89. d1shima April 6, 2012 10:04 am

Grasso was fun to watch, too. I swear he sometimes tried to punt short because he wanted a chance to make a tackle.

    Chad Shrout.

Now THAT was fun punt coverage!

  90. Steve April 6, 2012 10:06 am

Not playing this game will hurt BYU more then it will the Softbows. By not playing this game, BYU will be short 2 games, whereas FSU and the Softbows only short 1 game. Also, the Wahine still have FSU on it’s schedule.

  91. Kevin April 6, 2012 10:11 am

    Remember The Titans.. GREAT movie.

    Best line in that movie:

“Once you get on that bus you ain’t got no mamma no more; you got your brothers on the team and you got your daddy, now you know who your daddy is don’t you? Gerry, if you want to play on this team you’ll answer me when I ask you, who is your daddy! Who’s your daddy? Who’s your daddy?- Coach Boone”

    RE: #64

DPK — good find! I had his first name and last initial but not his full name. He started posting here in June 2007. I won’t mention his blog name since his full name is given. 🙄 But it’s his blog and he mentions Stephen Tsai and the Tsai-kos.

BTW, he was close on the Japanese origins of the name Tsai-ko. “ko” is loosely interpreted as child in Japanese, so Tsai-ko means we are the children of Tsai… 🙂 …and back in those days, we certainly were! He’s responsible for us too. 👿

ST once told me that the name was first coined by Princess Leila and later “popularized by Cat as she covered Blog Party 2. Cat, a former Cherry Blossom Queen, further gives credence to the ethnic origins (whether she intended it or not).

Click here to see a .pdf of Cat’s report and the first publishing of the name “Tsai-ko”

  97. d1shima April 6, 2012 10:52 am

    Kevin,

He was talking to “Jerry”, as in Lewis, because of remarks he and his pal, “Dean Martin” were making about getting on the buses for camp.

You’re right, it was a terrific point in a great movie.

  98. Kevin April 6, 2012 10:54 am

    It’s already free admission.

$$$$ gotta come from somewhere yeah?

  110. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 11:33 am

Maggitt had to do a little, uh, extra-curricular work during the early segments of yesterday’s practice. He came back to play corner in the second half of practice.

  111. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 11:34 am

It wasn’t clear — either five players were late or they had messy lockers — but there was some rollin’ going on yesterday.

Since we won’t be having a softball game today we can at least vote for Stephanie Ricketts

    Ralph…

Just gotta sweep the two games tomorrow.. Hopefully the rain stops and they can play tomorrow.

  116. Kevin April 6, 2012 11:44 am

    Rain?

  117. Pomai April 6, 2012 11:48 am

Sorry Ralph those nachos at the RWSS suck big time….not even free would they be good….

  118. Ralph April 6, 2012 11:52 am

Pomai, your taste buds differ from a college kids, that is why they keep selling them at the stadium.

Thank you for the awesome spring practice reports!

  122. madeinhawaii April 6, 2012 12:20 pm

Hmm… UTSA? They haven’t even played a game of football, yet, have they?

  123. madeinhawaii April 6, 2012 12:28 pm

Don’t they have to consider both Texas teams, then?

  124. d1shima April 6, 2012 12:38 pm

  126. HawaiiMongoose April 6, 2012 12:43 pm

UTSA played their first season in 2011, against a combination of Division II, NAIA and FCS opponents. They finished 4-6 and averaged over 35,000 fans per home game in the Alamodome, breaking the record for highest average attendance for a first-year collegiate football program.

  130. madeinhawaii April 6, 2012 12:45 pm

    HawaiiMongoose:

Oh they did play.. 4-6? 35K average in attendance? Wonder what the tickets sold at? .. 4-6 for a first season is okay… regardless of the competition.

  131. d1shima April 6, 2012 12:53 pm

Also helps to have Larry Coker as your head coach.

I wonder what Jimmy Johnson has to say about that? 😆

College Football’s 10 Worst Head Coaches for 2012

    10. Norm Chow, Hawaii (First Year)

Chow is a well-respected assistant, and is returning home to Hawaii as the Warriors make the jump from the WAC to the Mountain West. However, his offenses the last few years have been so-so, especially as his style and scheme did not mix with UCLA and Rick Neuheisel’s pistol attack.

Locker room and coaches bulletin board material.

    Interesting list of coaches.

  133. WarriorBasketball April 6, 2012 12:55 pm

Per Parsing the WAC, PG Keith Shamburger of San Jose State to transfer to Hawaii.

  134. HawaiiMongoose April 6, 2012 12:57 pm

MIH, there have been comments on the WAC board and elsewhere that UTSA gave away a lot of the tickets. Supposedly there was a deal where you could buy a bucket of chicken from KFC and get four free tickets. However a UTSA fan posted that total ticket revenue for the season totaled over $1 million, so obviously they weren’t giving them all away.

  135. Kevin April 6, 2012 12:58 pm

Stephanie’s been in the lead all day and ever since last night…

Either Hawaii fans have gone into “American Idol” mode, or the CAL fans are up to something…

This constant state of paranoia keeps me alert. It’s a rush I’m used to…

    Valerie Arioto 17.2%

    Katelyn Boyd 5.4%

    Mallory Duran-Sellers 4.6%

    Julie Fernandez 4.1%

    Ashley Hansen 3.9%

    Michelle Moultrie 10.4%

    Christi Orgeron 9.5%

    Cassie Reilly-Boccia 16.4%

    Stephanie Ricketts 23.6%

    Niki Williams 4.9%

  136. d1shima April 6, 2012 1:01 pm

That’s a mis-characterization…there hasn’t been any kind of “attack” in Bruin football for years.

  137. Kevin April 6, 2012 1:02 pm

How can Coach Chow be one of the worst if he’s undefeated?

  138. 702WarriorFan April 6, 2012 1:18 pm

    Kevin,

maybe the writer doesn’t like ‘old people or coaches’ and over looked being undefeated like the other listed undefeated coaches.

    1. Carl Pelini, FAU & 9. Curtis Johnson, Tulane

  139. Steve April 6, 2012 1:18 pm

I imagine the girls are happy they do not have to play in 40 degree, or less, weather. They will be playing in 60 degree, or higher, weather tomorrow.

  140. Stephen Tsai April 6, 2012 2:23 pm

I wouldn’t put much stock into it. There’s a recent beef between UH and Bleacher Report.

  141. Kevin April 6, 2012 2:36 pm

Well, anytime ANY coach is on some ‘hot seat’ list before he even starts his first game as a HC, I’m pretty sure most sane people won’t give it a second glance.

  142. Derek April 6, 2012 2:46 pm

Good get if Keith Shamburger transfers to Hawaii. Has to sit out a year, but he’s a solid player. Good scorer, good free throw shooter, good 3 pt. shooter, good assists. What’s not to like. Hope it’s true.

  143. RedZone April 6, 2012 2:50 pm

Hey bleacher some jobs are worth waiting for. And how can you form a judgement when you have no answer to your own question? Just one of those stupid lists.

Inside the pamphletes are direct details on how I plan to stop everyone from having comments.

You will also find a link to a magical website I created where free speech is not allowed.

    Hey Kevin,

Speaking of those pamphlets, I tried all those links in the pamphlet and they all lead to a PayPal button that says “Please Donate $1.00 to help me continue writing these great bits” … there’s also that other button that says, “No thank you, I just want to read on” … When I click on the “No thank you button” I get to another page that says… “Please Donate $2.00 to help me continue writing these great bits” … there’s also that other button that says, “No thank you, I just want to read on” … When I click on the “No thank you button” I get to another page that says… “Please Donate $3.00 to help me continue writing these great bits” … there’s also that other button that says, “No thank you, I just want to read on” … When I click on the “No thank you button” I get to another page that says…

  152. madeinhawaii April 6, 2012 5:28 pm

… this page under construction… with a PayPal button that says, “Your donation of $4.00 will go a long way to getting this page done.” And yet another button that says, “If you think you got here in error, please press here.” And when I press that button, I get to another page that says…

  153. madeinhawaii April 6, 2012 5:41 pm

…we have upgraded our subscription/donation services and are now accepting I.O.U.s. Your credit card will not be billed at this time, your credit card information is necessary so that we can reserve your share of the super-mega Nigerian Lottery we have won. Your information will be kept in the utmost confidentiality (hidden from police and FBI agents). …. and another button that says.. “No thank you, keep the winnings, I just want to go home.”… and when I press on that it says…. “WARNING, I KEVIN, THINK THAT YOU MAY HAVE A VIRUS!!! WARNING TO REMOVE THE VIRUS PRESS HERE!”

  154. SteveM April 6, 2012 6:52 pm

    $102.85 value for a “Kevin” t-shirt?

How much for a classic “Kazz” t-shirt 😕

UTSA had 6 home games, which means about 210,000 total attendance for the season. that’s less than 5 bucks a ticket average. This season their cheap seats range from $11 to $20 a game for 6 home games. They didn’t give them all away but it seems like they did give away a lot last year.
