Dead air

Jeff Portnoy said that as of today, AM 1500 will no longer have local sports talk shows.
It was inevitable after first Rob DeMello dropped out of the “Rob and Russ Show,” and then Jim Leahey and Kanoa Leahey discontinued their show.
It’s a shame.
The programs offered an alternative to Bobby Curran’s show.
But it seemed the station just didn’t have enough funding. There were too many technical breakdowns that often resulted in dead air and, it seemed, not enough promotional money.

In the worst-case scenario, middle linebacker Brashton Satele would need season-ending surgery.
If that were the case, then it would be wise to collect every doctor’s note and memo if he wishes to request a sixth-year of eligibility.
Last year, Francis Maka had a strong case for a sixth year. But because it took so long to locate medical records and opinions from four years earlier, he was not reinstated until midyear.
Offensive lineman Daniel Otineru also is having difficulty while he tries to locate medical opinions from last year.
It’s easy to fall behind, especially since a medical-hardship request can’t be made until the end of a senior seasaon. Satele should try to secure as many records and opinions as he can so he can apply as early as possible.

Too bad about Leahey and Leahey and the others.

  4. Da Punchbowl Kid August 17, 2009 8:38 am

Have to agree about Satele. He needs to fix that shoulder once and for all and come back healthy next year. He’s a possible NFLer if he can play healthy. Good luck to him.

How’s the little bundle of joy doing today, Mr. Tsai?
    🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  7. Garret August 17, 2009 8:40 am

It is sad to hear that 1500 won’t have local sports talk anymore–I enjoyed listening to them when I would visit Hawaii.

  8. al August 17, 2009 8:40 am

am 1500…another sign of the times.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid August 17, 2009 8:40 am

    Good morning, al. 😉

  10. Garret August 17, 2009 8:41 am

ST gives good advice about how Brashton and all athletes who might need to petition for a 6th year should collect medical records as soon as possible.

  11. Jun Tao August 17, 2009 8:41 am

The Leahey’s were good. Rob & Russ offered a difference in opinions in a “good guy – bad guy” type of role. Jeff was the ultimate investigator who would find great stories. They all will be missed.

  12. al August 17, 2009 8:42 am

not to reiterate nor belabor the point from my comments yesterday, but, satele’s loss is huge. he should do the surgery and apply for the medical hardship later.

in the long run, even if football is not an option, his quality of life will be better by having that shoulder repaired.

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid August 17, 2009 8:42 am

Did the Leahey’s “discontinue” or was that a management decision? What ever the case, it is indeed a sad situation for AM1500.

  14. al August 17, 2009 8:44 am

hey dpk….how’s the menehune story coming along?

  15. Garret August 17, 2009 8:45 am

Wisconsin’s former starting safeties are protesting their suspension from the team. This could get messy because at least one player is talking about getting a lawyer and one other teammate has already spoke up on their behalf.

If the lawsuit hits during the latter part of the season, this could cause some turmoil in the team when they play UH. If the players are still not on the team then, that is two former starting DBs not available to face UH’s offense…and if they are on the team, it would be interesting to see how much their coach plays a player (who he might need against UH’s offense) whose family is going to the press about this.

University of Wisconsin seniors Shane Carter and Aubrey Pleasant intend to fight their indefinite suspensions, which were announced Saturday by head football coach Bret Bielema.

“And I hate to say that . . . but I hope the guy comes to his senses. Lawyers have been contacted, and we just want the kids’ names cleared.”

  16. letsgowarriors August 17, 2009 8:47 am

    best of luck to brashton.

not this is not directed specifically to brashton, bc he was often injured so offseason was time for recovery vs. training for him. but i hope this opens the eyes of the younger players…dont wait till your senior year to train hard. “next season” might not come.

  17. letsgowarriors August 17, 2009 8:49 am

    Hope the best Brashton Satele.

    Al-
Finished the story development, the “beat sheet”, the movie treatment and I’m a couple chapters into the novel.

  20. Stephen Tsai August 17, 2009 9:02 am

    Brashton is a huge loss.
    That’s sports, I guess.
    Look at UH’s history:
    • Junior Lopati.
    • A.C. suffering a shoulder injury at the start of his senior year after colliding with “Rudy.”
    • Nate Ilaoa late in 2006.
    • Colt getting hurt in 2007.
    • Blaze and Rocky last season.

  21. wafan August 17, 2009 9:11 am

    Good morning, everyone!

  22. wafan August 17, 2009 9:12 am

Congratulations, again, to the House of Tsai.

  23. al August 17, 2009 9:16 am

    grandpa….this is true. that’s sports, that’s life.

important to have an equally adept second teamer and then some. someday we will be so loaded that when one goes down another able body is ready to step in up to at least three strings.

fortunately, mlb is one position that i feel that we have some horses ready to go in mana lolotai, jake heun, and george daily-lyles.

  24. al August 17, 2009 9:16 am

    g’day wafan.

  25. Garret August 17, 2009 9:18 am

UFC’s Chuck Liddell will be on Dancing with the Stars this fall.

Michael Irvin is the retired NFL player included this time.

  26. Garret August 17, 2009 9:21 am

Players always will get injured–that is football. Depth is critical, and I agree with Al that at least UH is deep at MLB.

Texas’ offensive coordinator was planning to have a lot of one TE and two TE sets this year…until they lost their top *three* TEs for the season. I guess they will do what they did last year (after TEs got injured during the season) and use a lot of 4 WR formations.

  27. Garret August 17, 2009 9:24 am

If Mana Lolotai gets hurt then experience at the MLB position will be a big worry…Heun didn’t practice there last season and GDL is a true freshman.

  28. (Jesse)James August 17, 2009 9:24 am

Good morning Tsaikos….tough loss of Brashton..but al, and others, are right..get that shoulder fixed…if he isn’t able to continue his football career, at least it won’t be hampering him in the real game called life….

al…you think they are going to play GDL as a true freshman??? Interesting. I know he is good from what I’ve seen of his high school games on FSW…

oh, and congratulations once again to the new grandpa and grandma from the windward side…..babysitting duties, here we come….LOL

  29. (Jesse)James August 17, 2009 9:25 am

also sad to hear of the demise of local sports talk radio….I guess ESPN is just too big to compete with…

  30. letsgowarriors August 17, 2009 9:25 am

i think paredes should learn MLB in addition to his OLB duties.

leave RJ and Blaze solely for outside. Lolotai can play MLB or OLB. leave Heun and GDL in the middle.

  31. Stretch August 17, 2009 9:29 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Sad to hear that 1500 is going off the air. It appears that there was some behind the scenes problems there. How can Rob leave the show, then the Leahey’s be taken off?? They were killing themselves. I wonder if they will come back again??

Anyone going to the Pigskin Pigout this Thursday??

  32. al August 17, 2009 9:31 am

cal started solly mid way through his true freshman year.
from all accounts gdl is a solly clone in the sense that he plays w/intensity, has speed, has confidence, has the smarts, is always around the ball, also reminds me of a mike singletary type of mlb. not very big (singletary=5’9″) but never out of position.

  33. al August 17, 2009 9:33 am

jj….with brash down. i believe gdl will no longer be a redshirt candidate. the coaches were so ecstatic when he committed and honored his commit.

  34. al August 17, 2009 9:36 am

stretch….its all about the numbers. too bad, yah. always good to have another venue.

too bad the “l n l” or “r n r” shows weren’t able to match up with afternoon antics of the “animals” they would have overtaken them for sure. however, it would conflict with their day jobs.

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid August 17, 2009 9:42 am

The other thing about Brashton’s loss is that the defense will miss his leadership as well as his play.

  36. koakane™ August 17, 2009 9:47 am

    gooda morning to tsaiko nation

to bad 1500 closed the local connection because it was by far the best, very informational and most entertaining program by far. it will be missed, now only bcurran is on …. booooo

confirming all who recommends brashton fix his shoulder and worry about another year latter. better to be healthy.

know that UH has money problems but why did they collect the parking fee’s last week. school was out and nothing going on campus. just expressing my opinion.

  43. warriorfanny2 August 17, 2009 10:59 am

While the focus has been on our secondary for spirited pass coverage in live practice sessions and the distinct growls of oows n ahhs have been heard for bone-crunching hits by our safeties on defenseless receivers….questions remain about our D ability to stop the BIg Six and their running game–that is, (nat’l 2008 rush ranking):
    #1 NAVY (292/5.32), #3 NEVADA (277/6.09), #14 WISC (211/4.84), #27 LAT (187/4.65), #32 FSU (182/4.95 and #54 BSU (152/4.41).
Last year, we gave up 300 yards rushing to FSU and Nevada and still won. Both games were last play victories and kept alive becz of their prolific running games against a porous warrior rush-D.
We gave up 210 y to LaT but pretty much controlled the tempo betw the redzones and although we yielded 122 net yards to da donks, below their average, they used the run successfully to set up their passing game and mixed it up at 50%.
Ditto with Dooley as he mixes it at 50-50. LaT will have stronger run game in place in 2009.

USU, #68, also has a rushing game and they did pull off an upset at Logan last year and managed 145 net rushing. 10 y over their average.

UNLV, NMSU, SJSU, Wazzu and Idaho are weaker rushing teams and we did hold them at bay last year.
The key will not only be on our perimeter quickness to close but also in the defensive trenches where our DTs hope to stablize our middle. Tall order and worthy of observation in the next two weeks. We need to keep healthy and our back-up underclassmen will be on a steep learning curve if we hope to hold the line of scrimmage.

  44. Jack Flash August 17, 2009 11:00 am

It’s funny to hear everyone talk down about am1420’s local sports shows. I actually like BC and the Sports Animals broadcasts. I felt that the morning am1500 guys went off the subject a little too much for my taste, although i would constantly switch between both stations to avoid commercials!

  45. al August 17, 2009 11:04 am

i think that last year we gave up a lot rush yards because of long gainers by guys who once they got into our backfield, simply outran our db’s. hopefully, this year, although it may take awhile to mesh the play of the db’s, we have improved our speed such that we won’t be giving up too many “home runs”.

  46. al August 17, 2009 11:07 am

jack flash…i enjoy listening to bobby c when i can. i like his enthusiasm and seems well prepared when he has guest interviews.

the other two guys actually drive me nuts. i find it hard to listen to two guys who are constantly trying to show each other up and more often than not don’t know their sports and misquote stuff all the time. its more like listening to abbott and costello. but, i do make a choice by not listening.

  47. Pride. August 17, 2009 11:20 am

    What is a “red zone”?

  48. Jack Flash August 17, 2009 11:21 am

al- i hear you. Sometimes the animals get irritating, but other times they have some good stuff on there- interviews and such. And hey- what’s wrong with a little Abbot & Costello now and then right? I actually miss the guy they used to have on midday on am1500- i forget his name (maybe Art?) but he had a gravel throated east coast accent and was really entertaining during football season.

  49. Jack Flash August 17, 2009 11:21 am

    Pride- ask WDoc…

  50. warriorfanny2 August 17, 2009 11:30 am

Last year we had 4 all-wac performers in D–david, ryan, leonard and solomon and we were ranked #65 (lower 40% in D1A) in Rush-D and #83 in scoring D (lower 30%)….if we are to assume a winning season–which this blogsite overwhelmingly predicts–improvement needs to be made in the D-trench and in the secondary against the rush.
Now, I havent raised the linebacker game–and replacing our 2008 LBs corps– Sol, Adam and Brash will be no easy task…but that is another issue.

  51. Derek August 17, 2009 11:30 am

What seems to have been lost lately is what’s going on w/ the graduate assistant hire! Seems like it’s taking kinda long and it’s the typical things that have been going on up there w/ the hiring process at UH. I don’t want to get into all these negative waves, but you would like to think that there’s a little more urgency. We are not taking about a full fleged full-time coach. Let’s get going!!!! Times a wasting!! Woof, woof!

  52. letsgowarriors August 17, 2009 11:38 am

leonard, watson, tufaga > meatoga, savaiiagaea, tufaga + JCers & Frosh?

    veikune & fonoti > fonoti & purcell?

individually we might not be better, but hopefully as a group, we are better.

  53. Pride. August 17, 2009 11:54 am

    What is D-trench?

  54. Slugger August 17, 2009 11:55 am

    Derek,

At least the GA position is no longer posted.

  55. al August 17, 2009 12:02 pm

aaron bain is a student manager now. hint, hint.

not a ga as he works to earn his degree. expect a hire within a week.

  56. curveball August 17, 2009 12:02 pm

A good practice today….see improvement everywhere each time I go..the work going into the special teams is very encouraging and Tomey is just the coach for it..I especially think the defense has stepped up a notch, they seem to be working well as a unit with communicating, support of each other etc. I really like what I see in Alex Green and Chizzy, both these guys can break it…

  57. Pride. August 17, 2009 12:08 pm

    Warriors will be WAC champs.

  58. Pomai August 17, 2009 12:16 pm

Just got home from this mornings practice, looking better every day, did notice that Jake was playing mlb this morning, that kid is a winner. If he steps in for Brashton I don’t think there will be a big drop off, his motor is running all the time, you can just see it “he wants to hit somebody”. There was a lot of good hitting going on, you can tell that guys are trying to be noticed.

I think we will surprise a few folks this year, our “D” isn’t going to be that bad, I think we will surprise a few folks this year.

I think the weak spot right now is the QB/WR’s they don’t seem to jell as good as they should. Hope they get it together by the end of camp.

  69. Kekoa August 17, 2009 12:27 pm

Pomai ~ Remember when we spoke of hearing the db’s closing on the wr’s and slots? After some majors katoosh noises heard all over the field, there is no doubt that the receivers are getting a little skittish.

Curveball ~ How ’bout Mana Silva & K. Estes? Were they making sure their presence was known? Hehehe…those 2 can fly like butterflies and sting like African Bees! Pesky…real pesky! Ask Jett.

  70. Pride. August 17, 2009 12:32 pm

I’m a little confused. I haven’t been to any practices so kind of feel like I’m out of the loop. But aren’t we still waiting to hear on the status of Brashton’s shoulder? Do we already know that he is out for an extended period? I’m praying and hoping that he will be ready to go in a few weeks, he’s worked so hard for this season.

  71. bstunna2002 August 17, 2009 12:32 pm

First off congrats to you and your family on your new addition Grandpa Tsai, does anyone know where practice will be tommorow morning is it at the grass field or the Cooke Ching field if someone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Too about 1500am, I really enjoyed listening to Rob DeMello and things went downhill after he left. He cited family reasons, new baby and all…but maybe he saw the writing on the wall for that station. Rob is very talented and could broadcast local games if given a chance.

  75. d1島 August 17, 2009 12:37 pm

    Pomai,

Thanks for the info on Heun. Haven’t been to any practices this season but recall last year when he was filling holes from the “O”ther side….he was definitely not shy of contact then, I wouldn’t doubt that he could be a good one on the “D”ark side!

  76. curveball August 17, 2009 12:42 pm

Brashton was on the sidelines today and seemed to be in a good mood..he is not in a sling and was carrying around a football all practice..
    Kekoa:

Silva And Estes definitely made there presence known..there were a lot of dropped balls today maybe that’s why..Blaze had a nice pick

  77. d1島 August 17, 2009 12:45 pm

    Jack Flash,

I think I may not get so down on BC if I felt that he was doing what he seemed to be doing years back by spending a lot of time at UHAD finding out what was really going on.
Since the “Sports Cafe” days, it seems like he gets more info about what’s happening at Lower Campus from callers. 🙄 (i.e.- “I’ll have ta check on that and get back to ya.”)

  78. bb August 17, 2009 12:53 pm

bummer on the AM1500 programming. I guess there will be no more Meal or No Meal….

BUT….Gary Dickman “UNLEASHED” by far has the greatest guests sports radio has to offer. 😉

  87. Don Weir August 17, 2009 1:51 pm

    bighilofan2,
As promised I checked with the training staff for the exer-bike that best fits Warrior Football needs. They want one that they can pack up and take with them as bikes are not provided on the sidelines by opposing teams and players face muscle cramps at many of the away games due to heat and humidity.
I went on-line and found multiple sites that carry a:
    Schwinn IC Pro
The lowest price I found was $899 with free shipping. This unit weighs in at 135 pounds.

Mahalos for any help on this project.

Don Weir- mahalo for this info.

Ok, Tsai-kos… are you game? I’ll commit $50.

  96. koakane™ August 17, 2009 2:26 pm

back from da errands and catching up on the readings

kekoa if al is willing why not but school just a few days away and the boarders returning I guess no matter the $5 rule is moot.

those who attended the morning practice, how was the traffic with all the boarders checking in today?

attended only one practice, last sat, so will give some general comments till I can make more. my thoughts; d certainly flies around, very aggressive, last year returners who are projected starters seem to know their positions and it seems our defense is solid but only game fire will tell. as for the offense agree with comments that receivers and qb are not quite there yet, oline much improved yet needs game experience to see if they can apply their blocking skills to the running and passing game. all in all we will definitely surprise some team but others will be ready and we just need to man up with them.

    1. LizKauai Yes there is a bicycle on the sidelines and yes it is not the best that can be purchased these days. The Trainer brought its condition to my attention two days ago and it is on the shopping list, along with a full time football team academic advisor, Waterhouse Training facility upgrade, video towers for the practice field, grass practice field upgrades, increased recruitment budget, and more.

I appreciate your suggestion of an ‘inside’ fundraiser for a new bike much like what we did for Women’s Softball WAC bracelets. Anyone at McCully bike reading this? Sports Authority?
    Anyone have some ideas?
You can reach me via the Na Koa website these days if you want to help start something up for a bike.

Please get some inside skinny on Brashton Satele for us.

ESPN and Bobby Curran are a good combo, but I am also sad for the competition’s dead air. For example when ESPN goes on and on for fantasy sports or beats the dead horses of high school sport controversy for my whole drive time – and then for some reason the sports animals seem to feel the need to beat some more or ellaborate for my drive home – sheer pain. That is when I escape to the other ESPN channels like 550AM that give me live ESPN and can get in-car reception on the East side of town.

  122. Ralph August 17, 2009 4:21 pm

I thought shooting the gap referred to the fly that found its way out

Make checks payable to Na Koa and I will run them through the foundation so everyone gets a donation letter sent from the foundation.
If we can make this happen soon we may be able to get the bike in to Hawaii and then on the plane to Seattle.
The altrnative is to set up the shipping to the Seattle Sheraton depending on delivery date, or to LV if there is a wait.

I’m not ducking being the collector, just saying anybody or several can be da collector. BTW ~ That was a very generous undertaking you and your Run volunteers took on. I’m sure your mom would have been proud of your charity drive efforts.

I’ve always pondered the bike treatment. Personally, I’m skeptical, unless it is thought that by strengthening other muscles through biking the hamstring is relieved of stress, and therefore heals faster.

To me, cramps are prevented by proper training runs, stretching, and hydration. Biking uses different muscles altogether. From what I’ve seen, the guys should try the stretching techniques used by runners, and guys prone to cramps should get iv fluids. To me it never made sense that even dbs were pulling hamstrings, like Kenny Patton. I know he used bike therapy, but I need it explained to me how it helps to become a believer.

  174. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 17, 2009 9:13 pm

From Wikipedia: Shooting the gap is a term used in American football. To “shoot the gap”, a defensive lineman will exploit the space between the offensive linemen. The defensive lineman is usually one of the defensive tackles. The gaps are given different letters depending on their distance from the center. The gaps between the center and guard are known as the “A gaps”, and between the guard and tackle are known as the “B gaps”. Shooting the gaps requires the defensive lineman to turn his shoulders and get past the offensive line into the backfield by any means possible, usually by diving through the gap. The play is often used during a blitz, as the defense will try to rush past the offensive line in order to get to the quarterback and cause a quarterback sack.

From Dictionary of American Football Terms: Stunt is a term for a defensive rush that takes an unusal path or has unusual timing.

Finally received a check in the mail for an article I sold almost six months ago so count us in for a $35 donation. How many bikes are needed? Can we just drop off the contributions at the Na Koa office?

We’ve also set aside the September 4 T-Gate HI-5 collection drive to go towards the Na Koa equipment fund. We’ll also have a spare change jar set up to kighten the burden in your pockets. We’ll also be collecting cans & bottles Tsaikos bring from home.

Question raised earlier about the increased parking costs. The rate went up at the start of the fiscal year – July 1.

Found some good stuff re: hamstrings surfing the net. What jumped out was this:

Excessive quadriceps development may produce an abnormal force in the hamstrings, particularly when there is a loss of co-ordination due to fatigue. This is more of a problem in athletes who mix cycling with running (e.g. triathletes). Cycling results in increased quadriceps development which may predispose the athlete to hamstring injuries, particularly when running.

I think a lot of the players with hamstring problems can trace their problems to the over-development of their quads, probable from lifting, and due to a training regimen that does not include enough running.

Here is more of the article:

Recurrent hamstring injuries may also develop after a number of removed causes. These causes may include:

    * referral of pain from the lumbar spine. This may occur due to disc bulges at the L4/5 or L5/S1 levels, or due to joint stiffness of the lumbar spine or sacro-iliac joints, which may result in nerve root irritation. The irritation of the nerves may cause local muscle pain, spasm or a more prolonged, generalised increase in tension of the hamstrings. Local treatment of the lumbar spine and sacro-iliac joints is necessary

    * meniscal (cartilage) problems at the knee. The hamstrings work to stabilise the knee joint during the running cycle. An alteration in the biomechanics of the knee joint due to meniscal tears or degeneration may lead to excessive loading of the hamstrings, and recurrent injury. Restoration of full knee function is required to avoid recurrent strains of the hamstrings

    * adhesions (tightness) of neural tissue. The loss of mobility and subsequent increased sensitivity of neural tissue (particularly the lumbo-sacral nerve roots) may predispose runners to recurrent hamstring strains. This is especially relevant when sprinting or changing pace. Mobilisation of the neural tissues by a physiotherapist and stretches are indicated to reduce the incidence of neural tension

    * postural variations. An increased lumbar lordosis (curvature of the lumbar spine) causes an increase in the resting tension of the hamstrings. This results in the hamstrings being functionally tighter, and more inclined to fatigue early. Postural abnormalities should be addressed through the correction of muscle imbalances by stretching and strengthening

    * poor running style. As mentioned previously, the hamstrings work strongly throughout the running cycle. A running style which is poorly co-ordinated may result in early fatigue, and injury. An altered stride pattern may be necessary. Over-striding should be corrected, especially when running uphill/downhill

    * loss of the normal quadriceps/hamstring ratio. There may also be a pre-existing weakness of the hamstrings. The imbalance in the ratio of strength between the quadriceps and hamstrings must be corrected to avoid recurrent injury. Isokinetic strength testing and an effective rehabilitation programme are essential

    goodnite all.

  183. Ralph August 17, 2009 9:50 pm

I think the bicycle helps circulation, circulation is a healing process itself in areas of injury. That’s why the trainers use heat, to generate better circulation in the injured area.

Good comments Ralph and Lava. I am surprised that over-use is not mentioned. Not giving muscles sufficient time to recover can lead to muscle failure. Properly prepared muscles (those who trained hard in the off season) can withstand greater rigors before breaking down and rebuilding. Quite often, those who pull muscles in the first week of camp aren’t in the shape they should be. Also, there’s a mention of the quad/hamstring inbalance. That can also happen by the quads shortening in response to heavy stress. Without proper stretching, they will put an added load on the hammies.

WDoc, thank you for the information. Please do not stop posting that type of information. Just because some Tasi-kos understand basic football and terms, doesn’t mean that the rest of us do. I for one am always willing to learn, but am embarrased to ask questions. So thanks for your contibutions to helping me gain more football knowledge.

What some of us forget is that football really is a dynamic sport, what we know today will be outdated in a year. So its always good to approach football with an open mind and a willlingness to grasp onto new ideas.
    right?

Great research!! I believe the bike is used not as an exercise or workout machine but one that keeps the athlete warmed up and loose. I would be asking Dr. Kan about this when we cross paths for his rationale.
I don’t think that prior to the season and in the season football players should be doing bike cross training. Your article is quite explicit on that.
How I wish there were elevators going to upper campus when I played because doing circuits on those stairs moved me onto a bike soon after graduation (knees).
I am humbled by the support of all in this project.
Let me know how Na Koa can support you all down the road.
    We are in this together!!!
