Talk about sudden change.

Thanks again to Tony Tuioti, Mike Smith, Gordy Shaw and Chris Tormey for appearing on today’s Warrior Beat Show.

With only a 37-minute warning after Greg McMackin canceled to tend to a recruiting situation, the four UH coaches stepped up. Special thanks to Smith, who was preparing to leave for the airport when he was approached.

We appreciate their participation.

    coach mack…
thanks for bringing the team back to life after all the controversy, injuries, more injuries, and the like.

what changes are in store starting with the players’ positional changes?

  5. al December 15, 2009 1:04 am

    coach mack….

what changes are in store on offense?
are we sticking with the basic run n shoot or are some modifications in the works?

  6. al December 15, 2009 1:09 am

    coach mack…

i am glad we finally employed an under center option game inside the five yard line. i am sure it gave the defenses fits since our being a basic pass first run second team, for them totally guessing what was coming.

i for one would like to see more time spent on our running game.

don’t you think an improved running philosophy would take the heat off of the pass rush and equally important allow us to recruit better lineman and running backs?

  7. al December 15, 2009 1:11 am

    coach mack….

that “scramble defense” you implemented in the second half of the season caused some havoc for the opposition. it also appeared that it also took us away from playing alignment/assignment defense, what is your opinion on its effectiveness?

  8. al December 15, 2009 1:15 am

    coach mack…..

it often appears that your defensive coordinator is not fully employed to the general public. i know that cal is a defensive genius and is a great teacher. he also is one of the great game time coaches.

i would like to know just how much he is a part of the equation, especially since your forte is on the defensive side of the ball game?

  9. al December 15, 2009 1:18 am

    coach mack….

during his st louis school days, cal lee was known not only for his defensive genius, but, he was largely accredited with being (by his peers) as a brilliant special teams guy. his return schemes were always a large part of their success.

have you ever tried to pick his brains regarding punt and kick return phases of the game?

  10. al December 15, 2009 1:19 am

    coach mack….

are there going to be any coaching personnel changes other than the grad assistant vacancies?

  11. al December 15, 2009 1:26 am

    coach mack…

i have another 100 questions for you, but, i’ll limit it to two more.

    one,
i know that coaches as a group are superstitious by nature. however, i know that you did not want to change from the green/white uniforms when the win streak was in play. that black n dark green IS the best looking uniforms ever in all of college football and should find its way back in the locker room.

will the black n green uniform return to the lineup and you could kick it off with a “black out night”?

    two,
how do you think next year’s team will do?

    …nuff said.

Coach Mack ~ Thanks for leading this battle weary team to a respectful finish. They’ll be much more prepared for the season ahead, I’m sure.

I know you have goals that you set for the team.

    My Question is:

    1. What are the top 3 Offensive goals?

    2. What about the Defense? Top 3 goals.

U-Dub has reported recruiting violations–recruiting hosts bought alcohol for underage recruits on a recruiting visit.

KING 5 News has learned that the UW football program has recently self-reported a violation where more than $300 worth of alcohol was purchased for underage recruits on a recruiting visit.

Coach Sarkisian said players took recruits out and the recruits didn’t have enough money, so the Husky players paid for the tabs.

While it’s a violation, it’s not considered a major violation.

It happened on Sarkisian’s first weekend as a head coach.

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    good questions from

    Al
    whitey
    d1shima

my favorite question for Coach Mack is: What positions are you and your coaches focusing your recruiting efforts on right now?

  42. bighilofan2 December 15, 2009 6:42 am

Another good question bears repeating to coach Mack:

… it often appears that your defensive coordinator is not fully employed to the general public. i know that cal is a defensive genius and is a great teacher. he also is one of the great game time coaches.

.. just how much he is a part of the equation, especially since your forte is on the defensive side of the ball game?

btw, I’m sure you’ve had time to consider that there was some public perception during gametime this past season that you wanted to go right while Cal wanted to go left. do you care that that was the public perception, and if you do, what are your plans to show a united face during game time.

  43. bighilofan2 December 15, 2009 6:48 am

    Coach Mack,

    1. what do you think is your top priority for this coming season?

    2. what tip/advice would you give to coach Mel?

  44. Bulla December 15, 2009 6:56 am

    Wow,
I have never won anything before, and in the last few weeks I win tickets to the Wisconsin game and now the Sheraton Bowl game. cheeee hooooooo

I had to do a funeral in Maui so I gave St the chance to have ‘another’ drawing for the Wisconsin game. For the Sheraton Bowl game…..it’s going to be me and my angel because ‘the beast’ is leaving this Saturday to the east coast to visit his grandparents for the holidays.

What a great surprise, mahalo, mahalo, mahalo!

  45. royvic December 15, 2009 6:58 am

    Question for Coach Mack

How important is it to a football program for it’s head coach in having a good public perception. With that said do you see yourself in the future polishing up on how you are perceived in public, namely in the way you speak and converse? Personally I think less publically hyping and embellishing of your players and coaches would be a start.

  46. I Love Pecan Pie December 15, 2009 7:03 am

    Coach,

How many more years to you anticipate being the head coach at UH?

Also, If you’re at the end of the career and have not won a WAC title would you consider a contract extension for another 4 or 5 years. If not, who would you see best fit to pass the torch to within your current staff?

  49. postmanke December 15, 2009 7:08 am

    Coach,

What is the one moment in your career that you are most proud of?

  50. bighilofan2 December 15, 2009 7:09 am

Coach Mack, wanted to share a way of shaping the public perception:

Β· Coach Sarkisian Media Teleconference Audio
    Β· Associated Press Version

SEATTLE – University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker has decided not to submit his name in consideration for the 2010 National Football League Draft and will return to the Husky football program for his senior season.

“After a great deal of careful thought and deliberation, I have decided to return to Washington and play my senior year,” said Locker. “I am very excited about this team’s opportunities and potential for the upcoming season and I am looking forward to being a part of it.”

“(The decision) just speaks volumes to the type of character and the type of human being Jake Locker is,”said Sarkisian. “He took his time. He did all the due diligence. He got the facts. This was not an emotional decision. This was a decision for him that was based on the information provided and what he wants out of his life. I’m extremely proud of him for the way he handled the situation.”

Obviously the words used by Sarkisian shows the announcement by both Locker and the follow up statement by Sarkisian shows that the media announcement by both was scripted before being publicly presented for maximum hype.

  70. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2009 8:03 am

In the previous post, I think somebody gushed about Navy having some sort of sophisticated system that allows its coaches to watch videos on the plane ride home. UH has the same system.
But no system is instantaneous. Video is uploaded in real time, as all TV people and Princesses know.
For each game, there is about 120 minutes of footage β€” 60 from the sideline, 60 from the end zone.
All schools use two-angle wide shots, even Notre Dame, Florida, Alabama, etc.
To get a headstart, video coordinators, like UH’s, will start uploading video during the game.
After getting all of the video uploaded, it takes about 20 minutes to burn a copy of an entire game (offense, defense, special teams). UH has a system, Kanguru, that can burn multiple copies. I imagine it’s a lot less time if a coach wants, say, only offensive plays.
As for practices, UH has it broken down into scheduled segments. So, say, the offensive line work can be shot and uploaded quite quickly. Practices run until about 9. The meetings are at 10 or 10:30, and by then, the videos are ready.
When it comes to video equipment, technology and productivity, UH is up there with all of them.

I’ve also heard Blaze Soares say that in terms of his paperwork that it’s “not happening”. Is there absolutely no chance (as far as the University in assisting him) that Blaze Soares returns to the team for a 6th year as well?

  76. Old Diver December 15, 2009 8:20 am

    Coach Mack,

Much was made of the number and quality of receivers you had last year and it was mentioned more than once by your staff that many receivers will play. Yet on a regular basis only four receivers got to play. Why? Ever thought of sending in plays using your receivers? And on a side note on offense and defense who is making player substitution decisions?

  78. royvic December 15, 2009 8:29 am

Of the two coaches show -Liz Chun versus Bobby C there’s no doubt in my mind that LC brings out the best in Coach Mack whereas in the BC show BC seems to bring out the worst in the coach. Watching LC show the coach seems to converse better. And he seems to be comfortable. LC is polished. LC doesn’t put a open mike in the coaches hand in allowing him to ramble on. BC does. LC asks specific questions thus allowing the coach to articulate his answers better. With BC it seems like the coach is under a spell. For he always seems to be stumbling with players names and simple thoughts which at times gives the audience a bad impression of the coach, especially with BC hovering over the coach and helping the coach at times completing his sentences. Of the two shows LC supplements her show with extracting a lot more substance from the coach unlike BC’s show. Whereas the BC show’s format allows the coach to be too engaging with the callers, a lot of redundancy is heard, and lot of hyping and embellishing of his players and coaches is emitted from the coach which I think doesn’t add to the coaches perception. LC sticks to substance, and I think she produces her show with that in mind because it does cast the coach in a better light. You can’t say that about BC or BC Show.

  79. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2009 8:40 am

The television show is pre-taped, and Scott Humber is an excellent producer. (He does the Leahey and Leahey Show.)

  80. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2009 8:40 am

Bobby Curran’s show is good because it allows interaction with fans.

  81. al December 15, 2009 8:44 am

at the same time…just how much of the lc is edited, whereas, the live stuff is sink or swim.

in any event, lc is better looking than bc. i do find bc to be more to the point and not afraid to ask the semi-tough questions.

The article I read made it sound like Navy was in an elite group when it came to video technology. The author made it sound like it was evolutionary, and said that only a few schools have this system. The author described it as being costly . So it does come as a surprise that UH has this system. Thank you for passing on this information. Now I can gush more as UH is staying ahead of the game.

  83. al December 15, 2009 8:46 am

#62 – I don’t have a problem with Coach Mack’s “image”. He’s just a guy doing his job and being real about it.
We have had experience with people who polish their public persona and come crashing down to a less than popular reality later.
Coach Mack is about as WYSIWYG as they come and I, for one, appreciate that quality.
We each have rough edges that need polishing and time is well spent grinding on our own.

having a top notch video system that delivers video fast to the end user is what every top tier Div I program has or is capable of having. Video capturing on hard drives, P2 cards, XDCAM cards, etc.. make the technology avail. Unfortunately, getting fast video, cutting it, burning it to a disc to view in 30 minutes is albeit unbelievable, it may not be considered “up there with all of them”

It is the cataloging of information, video files that when queried, can pull up entire inventory of video files in seconds. like: What plays does Boise St like to run on 3rd and short? or for recruiting: list all defensive players that are over 6’2, can run 4.5 with a vertical jump of 43″ that we have tape on? etc…

If UH has a video system that can support fast delivery of content with rapid fire search features that can pull up inventory of video files simply by asking a question then i would say “they are up there with all of them” or some of them.. and hats off to the coaches and the video team for selling it to the dept on making that commitment you are truly moving in the right direction in terms of high tech gadgetry! Awesome! – just by that alone you’re worthy of a bowl game. =)

http://dvsport.com/ – i would say 90% of the teams using this system are in bowl games.. just a guess

  88. al December 15, 2009 9:13 am

coach mack…you once mentioned quite recently that you have 16-17 verbal committments and that with other scholies going to well deserved walk-ons you believe that you had about 4-5 scholies left.

that being said, you also have offered as many as a dozen more scholarships.

what happens if you are overbooked?

i remember you once said that you would not take back a scholarship offer once offered. case in point, cayman shutter.

    have the rules changed?

  89. Uhfanzonly December 15, 2009 9:25 am

1.Coach Mack is their going to be any changes to the coaching staff besides the graduate assistants?

    2. How do you feel about the progression of our young defensive ends in Paipai Falemalu,Ervin Sione and Liko Satele?

  90. 808BCS December 15, 2009 9:35 am

…Coach Mack if Laupepa Letuli get’s his extra year do you think, to add more athleticism to the offensive line we should move him and Austin Hansen to the Guard positions from Tackle?

…Also with Blaze Soares and RJ Kisel-Kauhane going to graduate how does our outside linebackers look like for next year, do you think Aaron Brown and George Daily-Lyles would get some playing time?

Thanks for keeping this team together Coach after six tough loses we could’ve easily just given up but we didnt good luck next year and GO WARRIORS!

  91. Glenn December 15, 2009 9:36 am

    Coach Mack;
Your defensive emphasis on converting safeties into linebackers and linebackers into defensive ends to gain speed leaves us with an undersized defense which is ok against passing or option teams but leaves us vulnerable to power running teams like Fresno & LaTech. What is the plan to defeat these offenses?

  92. madeinhawaii December 15, 2009 9:37 am

    Coach Mac…

It’s all about future now. This last season we saw how debilitatiing injuies in key positions could be to our team. We also how surprsingly well we bounced back to cover those injuries at Qback. Yet, had we not lost Satele, Alexander, Bradley, and Lane for the season, or Paipai and Fonoti in the early games, we may have qualifed for a bowl game.

Obviously we lacked the necessary depth in a number of key positions. How good do you feel about our depth in positions for next season?

Will we be solid enough to go bowling?

  93. madeinhawaii December 15, 2009 9:38 am

    Coach Mack…

How about seeing if there could be some kind of ongoing competition during the halftime shows? Something that continues from game to game…

For example getting Halaus doing hakas/ha’as?

Two at a time… 8 Halaus over the first four home games. Semi-finals over the next two games. Final against the remaining two on Senior night … game 7? All 8 encore at the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl…

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 15, 2009 10:34 am

    Coach Mack,

There has been talks that your recruiting strategy focuses solely on Polynesian players or those with ties to Hawaii.

Given the unique challenges we have both geographically and financially, this strategy might make sense.

However, since you have taken over the program our recruiting budget has increased and due to the generosity of a certain airline you have a bunch of flight vouchers at your disposal.

During the June Jones era we witnessed many recruits who were neither Polynesian nor had ties to Hawaii and ended up doing well. A good example would be our beloved #15.

*Assuming my first sentence is true*, why is it that with MORE resources we seem to be limiting ourselves to players that only meet that criteria? Given an increased recruiting budget and need for quality players is it not a good idea to pursue players based upon talent/potential first regardless of ethnicity or if they have a connection to Hawaii?

Thank you and best of luck in 2010

  106. Kazz December 15, 2009 11:02 am

To add to Al’s message earlier.

Several times, UH athletes have been underdogs and good representatives of what an underdog is. The teams and even the individual athletes.

The Wahine may be an underdog against Penn State, but generally-speaking, the program has been in a position where the opponents, whether in conference or not, have been the underdogs.

  112. J-Dog December 15, 2009 11:33 am

    Coach Mack,

I recall before this past season that the plan was to use a rotation for the receiving corps.

I noticed that as the season progressed, that rotation was only used because of necessity due to injuries.

If a receiver gets “hot” like how Rodney Bradley was and how Greg Salas was all season, would the coaching staff be more inclined to keep those hot players in and not go to a receiver rotation?

  113. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2009 11:43 am

I saw the Lee brothers today.
They’re both returning, despite some rumors out there.

  147. Garret December 15, 2009 2:53 pm

It sounds like the conference merry-go-round will start sooner than expected…I hope that JD is exploring all options and that UH is positioned well when the dust settles in 3-4 years. Success by the football and men’s basketball teams are crucial during this period of realignment.

If the Big 10 takes a team from the Big East (Pitt? Cincy?) or Big 12 (they might want Missouri, but I don’t think they would go), then those conferences will grab a team and so on. That might trigger the MWC expansion since they will not want to get left out, and so on…

Athletic Director Barry Alvarez announced at an Athletic Board meeting Friday the Big Ten will push next year to add a 12th member to the league.

According to Alvarez, having 11 teams in the conference creates problems with scheduling. He said if another team was added, the conference could split into two divisions, which would help with scheduling and travel expenses.

  148. Garret December 15, 2009 2:54 pm

Another article on the Big 10 expansion topic.

At a Dec. 6 meeting at the Big Ten offices, the council (COP/C) asked league commissioner Jim Delany to begin the process of identifying and evaluating options for possible expansion from 11 to 12 teams. The Big Ten last expanded in 1989 with Penn State and hasn’t seriously pursued the possibility since 1999, when it had discussions with Notre Dame.

Penn State head coach Joe Paterno repeatedly has stumped for expansion, which would give the league 12 teams, two divisions, a longer regular season and a championship game in football. Paterno and other coaches have questioned whether the Big Ten’s long layoff before bowl games has contributed to the recent struggles in postseason play.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez told Wisconsin’s athletic board Friday that the time has come for the league to be more proactive with the expansion issue.

“Everybody feels [expansion] is the direction to go, coaches and administrators,” Alvarez said.

  149. Garret December 15, 2009 2:55 pm

This article analyzes the possible choices for the Big 10. If Notre Dame turns them down again (likely), I agree that Pitt might be their best choice.

<b.The one non-Notre Dame option that seems to meet every criteria — old football tradition, solid basketball program, geographic fit, academic fit, viable market, potential incentive to leave its current situation — is Pittsburgh, which would finally get its longstanding wish to renew the natural in-state rivalry with Penn State, to boot. Pitt is the one candidate that could seemingly slide into the Big Ten tomorrow, as-is, and basically fit in right away.

  152. protector December 15, 2009 3:01 pm

I’m with ‘haka’ on his enthusiasm for Mercado. Had a chance to see him kick (at practice time-didn’t get a chance during the game) at the HHSAA Championship game. Out of three licks at the 45 (55 yard attempts) he nailed 2 & the third fell about 5 yards short. Placed the next one in the middle of the giant “H” (60 yard attempt) and nailed it right down the middle with the ball landing 3 yards past the goalpost. If we had this kid this year we would’ve won at least one more game & that’s all it would’ve taken to be in the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl.

  153. Garret December 15, 2009 3:09 pm

This article tries to figure out how the dominoes would fall if the Big 10 expands and triggers other conference realignment issues. If BCS Conferences grab teams to go to 12 teams each, that definitely would affect the WAC…especially when the Pac-10 grabs 2 teams like BYU/Utah.

    MWC

Add Boise, Fresno, Houston, Nevada, SMU, and Tulsa

West: Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, and UNLV

East: Air Force, Houston, SMU, TCU, Tulsa, and Wyoming

The remaining teams of the WAC (Hawaii, San Jose State, New Mexico State, Idaho, Utah State, Louisiana Tech) would be hard pressed to stay together, as Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State would likely go with the remaining CUSA schools (Tulane, Southern Miss, East Carolina, UTEP, UAB, and Rice).

As such, the four remaining WAC schools would either need to go independent or consider dropping down to FCS level.

  154. al December 15, 2009 3:09 pm

st…i am thinking it is one of two cb’s…no?
then again that lb’er would be a nice get too.
and how about the wiscy sized ot?

    ok, ok, i’ll just wait.

  155. Garret December 15, 2009 3:10 pm

Any Big Ten expansion will have serious, long-term consequences for the world of college football. We will see a lot of realignment and maybe the end of certain conferences.

A move to 12 teams by the Big Ten, Big East, and Pac-10 would mean seven more schools would receive BCS status.

If a 12-team Mountain West Conference received the coveted seventh spot among BCS conferences as well, then 19 schools currently on the outside would receive the BCS gold star of quality.

  156. Garret December 15, 2009 3:11 pm

For those who seem to think that the Big 10 would be scared of adding a certain team, I should point out that the last team they added was Penn State…NOT a weak team. They are looking at TV viewers, geography, and Academics, probably in that order. BSU has none of those things above the candidates that are being rumored.

  168. Garret December 15, 2009 3:28 pm

    Al,

That is a nice wish, but sadly we both know that the MWC teams left UH out on purpose last time. It was NOT because they were afraid if UH, it was because of travel costs. The only way for UH to overcome that is to be a power in football and men’s basketball.

Travel costs in the era of budget deficits and Title IV team expansions is even worse now than it was the last time the MWC left UH behind.

  169. haka December 15, 2009 3:28 pm

    bsu has football….and……annnnnnd……..that’s all folks!

  170. al December 15, 2009 3:31 pm

i just wanted to hear from the brothers lee on the live chat one of these days.

  171. Garret December 15, 2009 3:31 pm

*If* the Pac-10 would take BYU and Utah, there might be an opening for UH in a revamped MWC. However, TCU would look to get into the Big 12 if Missouri goes to the Big 10…the MWC without BYU, Utah, and TCU really wouldn’t be that appealing…but it would give a chance for the MWC and WAC to combine.

Some teams would be left out in a MWC/WAC combination. If travel costs aren’t outweighed by football and men’s basketball, that could include UH. So, UH *needs* to at or near the top of the WAC in those 2 sports within 3 years…or risk being left behind forever.

  172. Garret December 15, 2009 3:32 pm

    haka,

All conferences care about are football and men’s basketball. Footbal makes the most money by FAR.

Didn’t BSU win the WAC in men’s basketball a couple of years ago?

  173. kama krab December 15, 2009 3:33 pm

The way I see it is the only way Hawaii will be a viable player in any expansion talk is if we where willing to pay at least half of the travel expenses for each conference team coming in. This could be possible but we would need either one big money cow to help us or several little money cows to help us offset these big bills that we would need to take on.

This is the only way we will be a viable player.

  174. haka December 15, 2009 3:36 pm

    garret,
true, but in the big conference scheme of things, i don’t think bsu is the total package worth adding.

  175. al December 15, 2009 3:36 pm

garret…..well aware. you know for years i’ve been saying this would be our only option other than to build the wac. money talks.

9/11 further placed the stamp and seal on our envelope.

we need to be appreciative of our wac affiliation as it may be our only option. if we ever get to be a national power then we could talk turkey but for now we must forever hold our piece.

having notre dame become the 12th member of the big 10+1 would have the least impact on all conferences. but, if you are notre dame….why bother when you already enjoy super star status???

  176. Garret December 15, 2009 3:36 pm

    I just checked the facts:

2 seasons ago BSU went 25-9, winning the WAC and making the NCAA tournament. UH went 11-19, losing to BSU in the WAC tournament.

Last season BSU went 19-13, making the NIT. UH went 13-17.

    I don’t think UH can put down BSU’s men’s basketball program…

  177. Garret December 15, 2009 3:38 pm

    haka,

I agree that big conferences would not bother with BSU, which includes all current AQ BCS conferences. However, the MWC would want to add BSU to boost them to AQ status.

  178. al December 15, 2009 3:38 pm

    true that on bsu.
their biggest problems are that they lack that “market” and with that smallish stadium……..

  179. kama krab December 15, 2009 3:38 pm

    I gotta say,

I don’t think that even winning on a regular basis will help UH’s cause. I think travel expenses will only get worse as the years go by. Money and mo money in my eyes would be the only remedy.

Winning will only make the people happy but will not solve the fact that we live in the middle of the pacific ocean. JMHO

  180. al December 15, 2009 3:40 pm

the pac10 is perfect the way it is now with two schools each in oregon, wash, arizona, and two each in norcal and socal.

they would never change nor think of adding at this point unless a school drops out.

  181. Garret December 15, 2009 3:40 pm

    Al,

I agree with all of what you said in #175. However, there *is* an opening possible if the Big 10 expands and steals a team from another conference (assuming Notre Dame turns them down again). That could prompt the Pac-10 to grab 2 teams from the MWC.

In that scenario, the MWC would need to add a whole bunch of teams *and* two of the teams in the MWC that left UH behind would be gone. The MWC would need to add so many teams that they would need the top half of the WAC…which will hopefully include UH in both of the key sports in 2-3 years.

  182. al December 15, 2009 3:41 pm

    ah….fruitless conversations i say.

lets get back to the real issues.
so who decided to accept our offer??

  183. al December 15, 2009 3:43 pm

my bet is that we get at least one if not both of those cornerbacks.
and for dessert we get one huge local boy pickup.

  184. Garret December 15, 2009 3:43 pm

    Al,

There is talk among some of the BCS conferences (the ones with 12 teams currently) to have *all* AQ BCS conferences to expand to 12 teams. This reportedly came up in the previous round of BCS negotiations and if the Big 10 expands to 12 then there may be enough votes to force the issue.

If the Pac 10 adds 2 teams and wants geographic travel partners, that probably means BYU/Utah. The Pac 10 reportedly tried to get Texas/Texas A&M in the past, but the Texas state legislature vetoed that by threatening to cut funding to those public Universities.

If all AQ BCS conferences need to have 12 teams, then the conference merry-go-round will really spin like crazy!

  185. haka December 15, 2009 3:45 pm

We must channel our mana for the task at hand!

I’ll follow Al’s lead and stop talking about this also. I really do hope for good news on the recruiting front in the paper tomorrow! ST could post a new blog with the good news sometime after midnight tonight…

  187. kama krab December 15, 2009 3:53 pm

Well I guess all that needs to be said when the dust settles is the rich get richer and the poor become extinct.

Hopefully UH will be part of the richer and not become extinct.

  188. kama krab December 15, 2009 3:56 pm

    Al,

I wouldn’t mind getting the 6’7 beast either. That would top the cake.

In a few years we could be looking at 6’7-6’4 across the line. That would be Wisconsin like.

    That would be mean.

  189. Kekoa December 15, 2009 4:08 pm

This just in from Florida Ted & Patti ~

They live 40 minutes away from the St Pete’s Times Forum. He has been trying for some time now to break thru the call network at the box office for tickets to the VB game. No answer.

FT has a physical checkup tomorrow. He’s kinda weak, but would really like to get to that game if he could get those tickets!

Why is the #3 team that was seeded #12 and still kicked enuff booty to get to the final 4 be overlooked for tickets! Not to mention that we came the furthest to compete for the title! Sugar Bowl all over again!

  190. al December 15, 2009 4:13 pm

  191. kama krab December 15, 2009 4:17 pm

    al #190,

That would be the dream come true.

Eh and if we already dare might as well grab the kicker by the leg and drag down the road to UH too.

Ho but I guess we get about fifty more schollies left for this class. LOL

  192. kama krab December 15, 2009 4:21 pm

    The big question is,

If we still have a boat load of offers out there on the table, How the heck will be able to sort everything out. Must have some kind of math major working over time in Mack office. That person better be getting paid overtime because if most commit it will feel like we just offered about fifty scholarships this class.

We’ll see. Just hoping everything works out and that we will not see as much casualties like we did last year. Hopefully all the commits are getting done in the classroom and on the Sat/Act test.

Ya know? We may be way out in the Pacific but we got 30K plus fans regularly… and we’ve been getting a lot of ESPN exposure… football/volleyball/basketball because we don’t compete for broadcast time. That should make us more attractive as a conference team if marketed properly.

Women’s volleyball is not taken seriously by the NCAA (as OBVIOUS by the piss poor #12 seeding of the #3 team in the country πŸ‘Ώ ) or as a spectator sport on a wide scale basis.

Sure you’ve got your hotbeds and meccas of volleyball like a Hawaii or Nebraskam but generally speaking, it’s treated like a third-class citizen.

Sadly, if this was like the finals of the World Series of Poker I’m sure Florida Ted would have gotten a response VERY quickly….

The fact that they covered the regional finals on TV lately is something amazing in it’s own right. Penn State got MINIMAL pub ONLY because of their 100-game winning streak. No other mention of the three other teams in the final four ever appeared on ESPN News lately… πŸ™„

You know it’s not a sport taken seriously by ESPN when they have “cute” little segments during live broadcasts of televised games to explain things like what a “libero” is to the TV audience. πŸ™„

Heck! Try checking women’s volleyball score updates on your phone off ESPN’s website and what do you get??? NOTHING! “Women’s volleyball” doesn’t even fall under the category of “All Sports”… πŸ™„

    ST,

Thankfully, SMU has 22 commits right now (13 of them are 3-star rated), so they don’t have room to offer recruits in Hawaii. They apparently stopped making offers to 2010 recruits awhile back and have been going after 2011 recruits, but I hope they stick to Texas/Louisiana/Oklahoma and don’t add to the list of teams recruiting in Hawaii.

  253. Garret December 15, 2009 7:44 pm

Oregon State is looking to play TCU at the Cowboys stadium next season. ESPN is setting up the game and each team will make over $1 million in addition to all the free publicity ESPN will be giving them…plus, it will really help Oregon State with their recruiting in Texas.

With just a little bit of tinkering left to do, it’s all but a certainty that OSU will open next season with a game against No. 3 TCU in the new Texas Stadium. The match-up is being brokered by ESPN, and appears to be in the final stages before officially becoming a reality.

While part of the reason for the game is, obviously, money — the Beavers stand to make upwards of $1 million for the game — another is the Rodgers brothers. Head coach Mike Riley said he wanted to get a game for James and Jacquizz in their home state, and this was the final opportunity to do it.

  254. Garret December 15, 2009 7:48 pm

Some Texas professors are unhappy that Mack Brown’s annual salary was raised from $3 million per year to $5 million per year. The University President points out that their Athletic Department has no subsidies or deficits and has given $6.6 million to Academics recently.

A resolution approved Monday, in an informal vote during a UT Faculty Council meeting, said the $5 million deal was β€œunseemly and inappropriate.” The group lacked a quorum for an official vote.

UT President William Powers Jr. says the athletic program, under Brown, has had no subsidies or deficits and has channeled $6.6 million into academic programs in recent years.

Brown’s salary is paid with money raised by athletic department revenues.

The NCAA is looking to make a rule that an athlete (in any sport) who suffers a concussion cannot re-enter a game that day. I didn’t realize that women soccer players suffer more concussions than football players!

An N.C.A.A. panel is recommending a rule to help improve the handling of concussions that would sideline an athlete for at least the rest of the day if he or she loses consciousness or shows other worrisome symptoms during competition.

The N.C.A.A. said that from 2004 to 2008, concussions during games accounted for about 10 percent of women’s soccer injuries, 8 percent of field hockey injuries, 6 percent of football injuries, 6 percent of men’s soccer injuries and 4 percent of women’s volleyball injuries.

As Garret brings up the possibility of conference re-alignments, JD needs to come up something that would make Hawaii an attractive member.

The Hawaii exemption that allows a team to schedule an extra game if one of the games was against Hawaii was a big help in the past. However, that exemption no longer attract as much interest. The problem started when all schools were allowed to add a 12th game.

Adding a 13th game is not the winner it once was for several reasons.

    1. A 13th game means too many games in too tight a schedule.
    2. It could interfere with conference play off games.
    3. In a 12 game schedule, It takes 6 wins to qualify for a bowl game. In a 13 game schedule it takes 7 wins. The extra game could become a must win game.

JD needs to come up with a better Hawaii exemption and take it to the NCAA. Hopefully, he can convince them of the value of a viable Hawaii sports program.

  274. A-House December 15, 2009 8:40 pm

    ST:

Only time I stay up beyond 9pm is attending a Warrior game and in Las Vegas. Otherwise, if can, I hit the hay by 8:30pm.

  275. Curt December 15, 2009 8:42 pm

    oldie,

You’re right. JD needs to be creative and come up with a new Hawaii exemption that makes it attractive to schedule UH. How about allowing teams that play at Hawaii to be able to start their season one week earlier? Of course, that would probably mean that opponents would get that break too without playing at Hawaii. Hmmm. This is hard.

  277. oldie December 15, 2009 8:52 pm

    Curt,

The idea of letting any team playing Hawaii start a week early did cross my mind. I never thought about the cascading effect. You’re right. That would be a problem.

Maybe just getting a one week early start for Hawaii’s first game. Of course that would not make Hawaii a more attractive conference member. But it might make easier for Hawaii to schedule a big name opponent.

  278. madeinhawaii December 15, 2009 8:56 pm

    Shoots…
Give the opposing team 3000-5000 free ticket to sell… they can keep the proceeds. (That way, they provide the labor, keep the records, and HAWAII gets more tourist $$s.)

  279. Curt December 15, 2009 8:58 pm

Actually, it could work if the NCAA permitted only those teams that played at Hawaii to open their season one week earlier. Say, UH had 8 scheduled home games. Those 8 teams could then schedule each other for their “early” season openers. Combined with the 13th game exemption, this would make it attractive to schedule games in Hawaii and to have Hawaii in your conference.

  283. Curt December 15, 2009 9:05 pm

    oldie,

Whoever schedules games in Hawaii can play a 13th game and start their season one week earlier. Sounds good to me. Politically though, it might be really tough to get that passed.

  284. RedZone December 15, 2009 9:09 pm

What is the reason for having that 13th extra game?

  285. oldie December 15, 2009 9:09 pm

    Curt,

If you’re saying that the eight teams need to scheduke each other in that opening week, the other teams may not be agreeable to that.

It might be better to allow them to schedule whomever they want to in the opening week, as long as they are playing in Hawaii sometime that year.

That would be at most eight early games in the season.

I hope someone from UHAD investigates the feasibility of something like this.

  286. al December 15, 2009 9:11 pm

sounds like mack had a very important date with a very important recruit. knowing st, it is scheduled to appear in tomw’s tiser.

ahouse, if you can wait until 2:14 am when the next day’s publishing appear online, only then will you be enlightened. otherwise, don’t hold your breath until then unless of course the news is about to leak prematurely and then and only then will st spill the beans on the blog.

but, i have an idea who it is. however, i am sworn to secrecy.

  287. Curt December 15, 2009 9:12 pm

    RedZone,

The 13th game is how the current Hawaii exemption works. If you play at Hawaii, you’re entitled to a 13th game. My suggestion is to keep it add an additional incentive.

  288. Curt December 15, 2009 9:15 pm

    al,

Can JC recruits sign earlier than February? I thought I heard something like that just recently.

  289. Kekoa December 15, 2009 9:19 pm

Florida Ted ~ Tried to purchase the tickets from the NCAA site that royvic posted. Great seats are available for both sessions (Thurs & Sat)
at $60. Problem is, if I purchase for you with my credit card, I have to show it at the W/C window, with I.D. in order to pick up the tickets!

Tried calling the number given…no answer. I see why you are so frustrated. I believe if you just go there and also ask for handicap seating, you should be accomodated. The 4 sections of seating they offered as best available would not have been available if it were a sell out. Take a chance and do a walk up.

  290. RedZone December 15, 2009 9:21 pm

I am sorry Curt. My question should have been why does Hawaii need the 13th game? 2007 they only played 12.

  291. sportsbow December 15, 2009 9:23 pm

    Referring to #279 Curt.

UH should ask the NCAA for that extra week exemption for UH, and for teams that play in Hawaii. The reason teams don’t want to schedule us is because they have to use one of their two bye weeks to schedule the 13th game. With the extra week, they will still have two bye weeks.

This year, they let Navy play a 15th week in a 14 week year for everyone else.

Navy started their season on Sept. 5, 2009 and ended their regular season on Dec. 12, 2009. (15 weeks)

UH started their season on Sept. 4, 2009 and ended their regular season on Dec. 5, 2009. (14 weeks)

    What’s wrong with that picture?

  292. Curt December 15, 2009 9:27 pm

I believe Hawaii wants the 13th game for monetary reasons. The more home games we can schedule, the more $ we get.

In 2007, we were supposed to be scheduled for 13 games. Our infamous AD, HF, said it would be a piece of cake. He probably waited (procrastinated) too long and could not seal da deal.

  293. oldie December 15, 2009 9:29 pm

    RedZone,

For teams adding a game because of the Hawaii exemption, the extra game gives them an opportunity to generate additional revenue, especially if they have a large stadium.

When teams were limited to 11 games, this extra game was all good. Now that all teams can play 12 games, the extra game does not have the same value for the reasons I stated above.

  294. RedZone December 15, 2009 9:35 pm

What if they go to a 12 game regular season with a preseason game?

  295. Curt December 15, 2009 9:37 pm

    sportsbow,

I agree. JD should petition the NCAA as the old exemption is not working as well anymore. With possible conference realignment right around the corner, I’d hate to see us left out in the cold…again.

i think the team needs to add another one

would like to see the one from kam joining the warriors

  298. Curt December 15, 2009 9:47 pm

    Redzone,

Hawaii could play 12 games but I believe that UH prefers 13 for the $ it brings in. I don’t think the NCAA permits “preseason games.”

My suggestion was intended to give mainland schools more incentive to schedule games with us and to make us an attractive member of the WAC or any other conference.

  299. Curt December 15, 2009 9:51 pm

Well, it’s time to head home. Good night oldie, Redzone, al, and sportsbow.

My prayers to all of the “ailing” Tsaikos and their ohana.

  300. sportsbow December 15, 2009 9:53 pm

    Curt,

I asked some of the posters on the WAC forum on why they didn’t add the extra game when they play at Hawaii. They said that they don’t schedule a 13th game for themselves anymore because it will take a bye week away and will only have one bye week for the entire season.

When the NCAA added the 12th game, I guess they forgot all about Hawaii’s exemption and didn’t realize that it would hurt UH when it comes to scheduling the 13th game.

The bottom line is that, they added the 12th game but forgot to add the extra week.

  301. Ralph December 15, 2009 9:58 pm

some of you, BigHilo and Royvic asked toughed questions, unfortunately you asked them early in the morning, Mac read them, and found a recruit he had to visit rather than face you and the rest of the WB posters

  302. Curt December 15, 2009 10:00 pm

  305. protector December 15, 2009 10:34 pm

    Stephen Tsai or anybody,

I asked a question to Coach Mack about the policy/mission of recruiting Polynesian players or those with ties to Hawaii *only*. Basically why do we need to limit ourselves to that segment of the population when we have an INCREASE of funds and gifts in-kind etc….when June recruited wherever based upon talent and had MUCH MUCH less resources….

Given MORE money and resources shouldn’t we step up our goals to get 3 even 4 star recruits from west coast and even maybe some of the south regardless if they have Polynesian blood or have an aunty who lives here etc…?

I could barely hear what Tormey and Shaw etc were saying (maybe the mics weren’t working?) but I was wondering what their response was.

    Did anybody hear an answer?

    Thanks.

    A-F’N-MEN!!!

Ultimately in most cases, the student athletes suffer. All their hard work in the classroom and in the gyms and on the fields, they are slapped in the face with disrespect.

Second-class treatment by the NCAA is protocol.

    PATHETIC!!!

Made me sick to my stomach to see and hear the words from Stephanie Brandt and Kanani Danielson when they were interviewed on that Sunday following the announcement of their 12th seeding.

No one out there in lala-land knows or has a clue about how talented the Wahine are and how they bust their okoles game in and game out and the obstacles in travel that ALL of our student athletes have to endure to compete on the same so-called “level playing field” set forth by the NCAA.

Same ole story, our valiant men and women athletes have to work harder, play harder, and just “survive” harder than most to gain the smallest ounce of recognition whenever great accomplishments are met.

Again, if the Wahine go all the way to the national championship, a part of me wants to see them throw away that NCAA trophy… and burn the championship banner instead of raising it!

  310. Kazz December 15, 2009 10:58 pm

Forgot to add that Brandt and Danielson said all the right things regarding the disrespect by the NCAA, but of course we all here in Hawaii know to never expect nothing less than class from our student athletes!

I think I know why he had to be somewhere else. I believe it had something to do with locking in a certain star quality lineman. Hope the announcement is made soon.

Meanwhile, ’tis the season for lots of offers, counter proposals and all kine promises flying around. Just sit back and relax. Watch the hype, and wait for the final ink marks on the official papers when the time comes.

That reminds me, get your golf sticks out and get ready to help Doris Sullivan raise some money for her PIAA program. Remember it takes money to help get these athletes and their parents ready for adoption on signing day.

It is a long process for these youngsters to prepare themselves to take the big step forward. Doris leads the way with her staff by helping them with the qualification process. She helps showcase their talent on the field with her annual fb combine. Her academic guidance provides them with the information they need to prepare themselves in the classroom.

All of this *free* advice bears a significant administrative cost that she has underwritten with her non-profit organization. We Tsaiko’s have helped in our small way with annual donations of cash and administrative supplies. As her program grows, so do the expenses.

In the Spring she will be announcing a Golf Tournament to help draw some corporate donations to help her maintain her important work to prepare our youngsters for quality recruitment.

    Stay tuned!

reading HA Wes Nakama’s take on the Prep Bowl, and his remarking on that DB’s speed, catching the receiver after giving up a 15 yard head start at midfield, running him down at the 7. got me to thinking, when i wanted to practice > great competition, I went to New York. they’d argue about anything and everything, and look you in the eye while they was trying fo steal $$ from yo pocket.

anyway, getting ready for next year, the reality is we’re gonna be facing those speedy kine guys. the fast guys, in buckets, is ova dare, in Texas and Florida, especially Florida. da point is, gotta recruit speedy kine guyz where get da speedy kine guyz. you cannot hit em if you no can catch em. Dats whats on my mind.

  334. Kekoa December 16, 2009 2:23 am

Bhf2 ~ I’m increasingly confident that coach Tormey has only just begun. I believe that he has taken time to form a fortress of linemen in front of his QB. It will enhance our offense and propel them to new heights! I’m thinking his plan will include depth like we have never seen before.

I like the way he has patiently built his line. I noticed that he took them step-by-step thru the basics last Spring. Slow, methodical, knowing that it was going to take them time to learn how to apply this new found strength and purpose. We witnessed it during the Navy game, as their confidence started to show. So now he adds another layer with his seasoned crew to work with. Is it Spring yet!

  335. bighilofan2 December 16, 2009 2:27 am

We can get ’em! If we can figger out some way for Rainbow Cliff to drop a few on our doorstep without the NCAA compliance peeps getting all hu hu.

…and who better to help recruit these local speedy receivers and corners then Inoke?

Oh so sorry Bhf2, I meant to say both Tormey and Shaw. They both worked hard with the wounded Warriors to reconstruct from the healthy. A few moves here and there to cut ‘n paste, patch and plug. All the while, they continued to teach. Imagine what it’ll be like to get some healthy bodies in the Spring.

That’s the part that concerns me. Keeping them healthy. Got to work on a solution to the hamstring injuries. We all wish that we can get them more motivated in the training regimen that they need to follow. I’m all ears to any experts on the subject. Sports medicine grad students…here’s your chance volunteer your services.

Re 338: Jerry Rice. Davon Bess.

Two of my favorite players even if only one is a legend, for now anyway. They are both exceptional people because of their work ethic. I watched Rice practice running his pass routes at Rocklin, CA during their Super Bowl glory days. He did this on his own, and by himself.

Davon has that same desire to perfect his route when I watched him work by himself at UH. It doesn’t surprise me that he continues working by himself at Miami.

ST did Mack’s recruiting emergency have something to do with VJ Fehoko and Lawrence Fagafuaina?

  353. protector December 16, 2009 6:38 am

    (J)J,

Best wishes for your mom; my thoughts and prayers are with you & your
    family.

Rats, I was hoping I’d wake up to some good news about recruits. Hope it pops up later today!

I liked what the coaches had to say during the inteviews & really regret we’re losing Mike Smith; seemed like a helluva guy & coach.I still stand by my statements from last year that Coach Shaw & Coach Tormey would prove to be the team’s most valuable “recruits” (moreso than players) and I think their presence has arguably already showed dividends. Even though I know there’s a good probability Coach Tormey may leave us sometime in the future for the right situation (HC, Coordinator, or even a position Coach for a big-time, big-name school), he’s going to give us 100% effort and will enjoy every minute doing it, from what he said verbally & non-verbally. I’m ecstatic that Coach Shaw as much as said that he’s not looking for a Head Coaching position or even a Coordinator job elsewhere & seems to like it here. This guy will make some of our boys All-American before all is said & done. And because of what he said about Coach Mack telling him to recruit O-Line from ANYWHERE, I think we can put to rest some others’ concerns about the recruiting being too “provincial” / limited and other concerns that we aren’t getting the “Wisconsin / big-tree” types. He’ll know what we need and I don’t think he’ll only go for size if the player isn’t mobile, coachable or totally undisciplined or attitudinal.

I think the coaches will be shoring up the weaknesses in order to prevent Wisconsin-like debacles from happening too often & Coach Tormey already addressed that they were looking at stopping the run because of teams like USC, Wisconsin, Fresno, Nevada, etc. Whether people like the Coaching Staff or not, it’s already in-place and they don’t have to scramble anymore & they can take their time about the GA positions. I just hope guys like Paipai, Geordan, Rocky & Brashton are recovered from their injuries so that USC, Colorado & others can get a true taste of Warrior Ball.

If I have one football wish for Christmas, it would be that all the physician/doctors/nurses/ medical clerical staff (for Blaze Soares previous medical conditions) get off their okoles and get the documentation needed for that darn 6th year. It doesn’t take money, just some time to look for it and send it in! I guarantee that if people would facilitate it, Blaze would come back and it’s gonna be all over for that USC offense with the guys we have coming back!

  354. Garret December 16, 2009 6:39 am

Missouri has publicly confirmed that it would be willing to listen to the Big 10…the Big 10 has three non-BCS bowl tie-ins that are in January each year, which could be enough to convince Missouri to switch conferences.

If Missouri goes to the Big 10, what team does the Big 12 go after? Houston? TCU?

Separate statements issued less than one hour apart on Tuesday expressed a will by the Big Ten Conference to expand its membership and a way that Missouri would be willing to be considered in that expansion.

Missouri officials have expressed dissatisfaction with the Big 12 Conference bowl selection process, a process that has undercut the accomplishments of the MU football team in each of the last three seasons.

On Monday, on the Campus Corner blog, The Star detailed the possibility and possible willingness of Missouri to explore a move to the Big Ten if approached by officials of that conference.

    “Shoots…
Give the opposing team 3000-5000 free ticket to sell… they can keep the proceeds. (That way, they provide the labor, keep the records, and HAWAII gets more tourist $$s.)

Of course, UH would have get the stadium “authority”
(I hate that title) to agree. Or as June Jones wished,
get their own stadium—to heck with them…I bet Texas U owns their own stadium and is one reason why they make money…

    I Love Pecan Pie,

The University of Texas at Austin *does* own its own stadium. It is right on campus and is a great facility. The stadium includes a lot of workout rooms that are used for classes–I took 2 strength and conditioning classes that were held inside one of the workout facilities in the stadium, one of my classes even spent a whole class period playing football in that stadium.

The stadium is less than a 5 minute walk from the huge dorm (Jester) that holds over 3000 students and had its own zip code when I lived there. My freshman year I lived on the first floor of that dorm and the football players lived on the second floor. My room used to have basketball players living there, so the bed was 7 feet long…quite a bit longer than I needed!

    ho ho ho Merry Christmas.

    Postmanke,

from what I saw on the Warrior Beat show yesterday, imho
the most [fill … in da blank.] person on Coach’s speed dial is Tormey.

i liked all 4 coaches on the show yesterday. they each have their own style. rereading 808BCS#90, I’m thinking

    COACH MACK,
you’re doing great. you can do more! the Warriors believe in you. You had a pile of your crew cover for you last minute. that is great showmanship. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

and p.s. come talk to us when you’re ready. next year is fine with me.
go take care of business first. best wishes, sir.

Garret, football 101? Must have been fun.
No wonder you seem so knowlegeable about
the love of our life. I had a guy above my dorm
room (Univ of Wis) who bounced a basketball
when he studied, and needless to say, the
pitter patter did not help me concentrate on my
    studies…

  365. Buffoman December 16, 2009 7:52 am

Here’s a thought that may not make sense to those “in the know”.

Why does it seem that with all of the activity that started with the MWC talking about BCS, now the Big 10 looking to “remodel, Missouri looking to jump, if asked, Big 12 possibly taking TCU, MWC looking to possibly becoming a 12 team conference, the WAC fall silent? It just appears that the WAC is a conference that chooses to react as opposed to act to solidify it’s standing as a relevant, viable attractive conference. Am I missing something?

My thought in this is that if we react, again, as the dominos listed above fall, we are truly going to be left out as a conference. Truly.

That being said, what is the UH and JD doing to save it’s extremely vulnerable skin? I agree with the comments above that we are not attractive to anyone as we stand and need to have some selling power (“being Hawaii” does not cut it any more.). If the State really wanted to keep UH football as a mainstay, it will have to do some radical, out of the box thinking to create an attractive partner. Without that, we are a poor man’s also ran. We did not and will not have a top tier football and basketball program. I love the Wahine volleyball, but face it, it’s not a radar grabber with the rest of the college world.

Sitting on our hands waiting and reacting will not do it. We got into the WAC a long time ago because we acted. I believe it may have been Ray Nagel who was AD at the time but he was a major player. I believe the State was also “all in” on the moves.

If we are not going to be a major player, we have to be prepared to accept the fact that and the way UH and the State is acting at the moment, I am afraid we are going to be left out of the dance with no partners.

  366. al December 16, 2009 8:21 am

    shudder the thought……..

okay, so no news is it good news or bad news?

since we didn’t awaken to some recruiting headlines of who committed and the like…i was thinking (and thats always dangerous) that i hope mack’s emergency “end run” yesterday did not have to do with one of our major recruits decommitting?

Did you shop online during the holiday season like I did? Your PC is undoubtedly infected with adware/spyware/malware(call it whatever you’d like) now, and your computer is at serious risk of total failure because of some holiday hackers. I used a free software program scan to determine if my computer was infected, I suggest you do the same at: http: //registrycleanerwindows7. com
