By the numbers

I’m not certain if test scores are going up or down, but it appears that football players are doing well in math and problem solving.

There are at least three FBS quarterbacks who list Hawaii as an option to transfer. Their interests are based on Norm Chow’s record of developing quarterbacks and the starting UH quarterback’s position up for grabs.

UH’s move to a 3-4 base defense means a starting linebacker position will be added. UH has received several inquiries from players interested in transferring.

It’s about supply, demand and opportunity.

* * * * *

Each spring, there is intense competition … for jersey numbers.

Soon after defensive end George Daily-Lyles graduated, offensive lineman Kody Afusia put in a request for No. 55. It recently was granted.

Quarterback Ikaika Woolsey is going from 15 to 11, a number he previously wore before it was seized by recent graduate Tavita Woodard.

There have been numerous numerical requests. The most pursued are single-digit numbers, which have increased in valued now that UH is not issuing duplicate numbers to players on the active roster.

It’s about supply, demand and opportunity.

Today would have been Florida Ted’s 67th birthday.

Even here on the blog single digit numbers are in demand by a few.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

So, what do guys think about the new plan for the SSC? I say, it’s about time!

  9. BigWave96744 February 25, 2014 8:47 am

    Hot numbers up for grabs:
#2 (Allen Sampson & Tony Grimes)
    #5 (Billy Ray Stutzman)
    #9 (Chris Gant)

Now that Kody has switched from #54 to #55, I would like to see a stud LB reppin #54 and play like the Noga’s

If Max Wittek comes, will they reassign Adonis Phillips and Keelan Ewaliko’s #13? Max wore that number at both Mater Dei and USC.

If Stephen Rivers comes, he wore #17 at both Athens High and LSU. But Lance “Keke” Williams is wearing #54. Wait, Keke is a former Farrington LB like the Noga’s. Hmmm, Keke repping #54, perhaps?

Note who ever get’s Sean Schroeder’s #19 will have plenty fans. Some places in town still has #19 kids and adults jerseys

  10. BigWave96744 February 25, 2014 8:48 am

Opps Keke is currently wearing #17

  12. Shoko February 25, 2014 8:58 am

San Diego State running back Adam Muema left the NFL combine on Sunday saying he was simply “following God” and that he was “told to sit down, be quiet, and enjoy the peace,”. God also told him that he will play for the Seattle Seahawks.

I really don’t understand the rationality behind that decision.

  13. Stephen Tsai February 25, 2014 9:02 am

    Numbers are important.
And today, Ipu Man is No. 1.

  14. Da Punchbowl Kid February 25, 2014 9:12 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

Speaking of numbers, 9 wins or so, a Bowl appearance and a top 25 ranking would be nice.

    Fifteen!

  17. markazulu February 25, 2014 9:22 am

Ikaika Woosley i think is the dark horse to win the starting job. Graham also before he got hurt was getting slightly better and if that light goes off in his head like it did with Sean Schroeder then i think he will be a pretty good QB.

With the addition of Beau Riley and possible addition of Max Wittek or Stephen Rivers the QB competition should be great IF Norm lets it go to THE BEST one.

going to like losing money from Blaisdell Center events……the fight has just begun!!!

  20. jeezy33 February 25, 2014 9:31 am

    17. Doesn’t “dark horse” mean unexpected or non favorite? Pretty sure Woolsey is the favorite to win the starting job. Not dark horse.

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid February 25, 2014 9:39 am

    #16 – Dave –

This is true, usually followed by remorse caused by the numbers on the scale.

  22. markazulu February 25, 2014 9:39 am

@20 Well i honestly thought the favorite to win would be Graham or if Wittek/Rivers transfered they would be viewed as possible starting QB above Woosley. Though my opinion is well it should be a great QB competition.

  23. SteveM February 25, 2014 9:44 am

    Good morning everyone!

A smile and shaka to FloridaTed! RIP.
A bit of trivia: in the Tsai-ko Group Caricature, the person holding the football in the second row was supposed to be Ted (he won it as a prize from ST). However, we and artist Louise did not know what Ted looked like at the time so she substituted my likeness. It was intended to be Ted.

  25. jeezy33 February 25, 2014 9:48 am

    22. Graham had surgery…. If anything, Graham would be the dark horse given that he isn’t participating in spring ball and don’t know how long it will take to recover. He has had injury issues in the past. For Graham to get a shot, it would take a lot of things not happening in my opinion. Similar to SS. If Graham doesn’t get hurt and Woolsey doesn’t play poorly against Fresno, SS doesn’t play this year.

  26. markazulu February 25, 2014 9:54 am

@25 thats true i totally forgot that Graham was having surgery lol

  27. Shoko February 25, 2014 10:01 am

I don’t think there is a clear favorite at this point. There might be a favorite from a fan’s perspective. Neither Graham or Woolsey really had the benefit of playing enough to say who’s ahead. Won’t know who is the favorite until spring training starts, or Chow goes on record and says so-and-so is at the top of the pecking order going into spring training. We shall see, though.

some day, and I do hope so soon, Hawaii’s legislative and council donkeys will lift the head and see, oh my, whole new world now – wea deed da plantations go? wea da beeg 5? plantation mentality should have disappeared in the 50’s – go back and look at all the legislation and rules and guidelines, etc and change um! don’t sit there and protect your okole

unionism is good, but there has to be some understanding on when to give a little – I guess those in power want to control everything, but when you mahkay we all go back to being dust and yours not goin be betta than mine.

Thanks Tommui for your comment. You are right that it doesn’t make sense to hVe the Feds involved in a NCAA violation. I just remember Bobby C said that he is aware of the problem and didn’t think it was anything.

Manoa Mist, I wish you wouldn’t come here and spread false rumors.

Warrior Dave: I wish you wouldn’t accuse me of coming here and spreading false rumors. If you want to believe Curran that is your problem…lol. If you had an assistant coach out for the rest of the year because of what he is accused of doing, is that “nothing?” If you had to notify the conference about a “situation,” is that nothing? If the feds are involved, is that “nothing?” Think about that before you accuse me my brother.

  39. Shoko February 25, 2014 11:09 am

It seems strange to me that with the situation with Akana there’s no mention of it in the news. Especially the part about Akana no longer on the coaching staff for the rest of the season.

Is he or was he fired, or just on some administrative leave until this all gets worked out or is this just speculation?

How do you measure effective? Although Schroeder didn’t garner as many wins as we had hoped for, he certainly was effective by most other standards.

    National Rankings:

    15th – Passing TD’s
    21st – Passing Yards/Game
    30th – Passing Efficiency
    35th – Total Passsing Yards
    35th – Total Offense
    42nd – Passing Yards/Game
    46th – Completion Percentage

Not too shabby for a QB on a 1 and 11 football team.

  45. markazulu February 25, 2014 11:56 am

@44 he really only played games after fresno state

  46. markazulu February 25, 2014 11:57 am

i meant to say and he only became the starter after the fresno state game his stats could have put him in maybe even higher nationally

  47. Jeezy33 February 25, 2014 12:06 pm

    44. Not trying to be critical but I would say 3rd down efficiency, critical turnovers, and 3 and outs were the downfall of SS.

Not much more he could have done about Wyoming loss. Our D loss that game. Our D loss navy. Although we did settle for too many FG attempts while navy was punching it in the end zone.

Colorado St game I think SS took a sack early on in the red zone that got ran back for td. Same Utah st. Pick six while in scoring position. He didn’t clutch up in San Jose game.

Id say he had a solid year, not enough to win games when game was on the line though if that makes sense.

  48. kifi February 25, 2014 12:12 pm

#47 – My point Jeezy is that we all know that Schroeder was limited. He did well with what little resources that he had. With a better athlete at the position, and a better offensive line, our offense will show much improvement in 2014. Sean Schroeder will be a successful person, whether in football or outside of the world of football. He is simply a winner at life and will continue to be a winner in the future.

are you also a ardent believer in the “ancient Aliens theory”? there are many things they say and show, such as drawings in the Pyramids, that make sense – interesting take on something we almost never analyze – how could, man without special tools and equipment, created so many large objects around the world that fit so tight that a piece of paper cannot fit

Mrs is hooked on it and constantly reminds me that some part of me is “alien” – OK, I’ll drink to that!

  56. BigWave96744 February 25, 2014 12:39 pm

  58. BigWave96744 February 25, 2014 12:41 pm

A-House, just so long as the Mrs. doesn’t constantly remind you as being “Ancient”

  59. A-House February 25, 2014 12:44 pm

SS stats for 2013 is what it is – does that really show efficiency? – what about all the QBs who used the run as their primary weapon? were they less efficient even when they won many, many more regular season and bowl games?

I do hope that someone will take the step and give a QB credit for throwing a 5 yard pass and give the receiver credit for running it 75 yards; not an 80 yard completion for the QB stats – we have all heard the phrase, “it’s all the receiver”.

oh well, back to my nap

    48. He exceeded everyone’s expectations… just needed more help from the D and maybe a play or 2 in couple other games and could have been a different season..

He performed well enough to win the SDSU, navy, unlv, and Wyoming games in my eyes.

Average versus Colorado st, San Jose st.

Bad against Utah st. But who plays well against Utah st?

    Overall that’s pretty good..

  62. boolakanaka February 25, 2014 12:56 pm

FYI—Duane Akina has been offered the Stanford DB position–he is currently considering it.

  63. Former UH Athlete February 25, 2014 12:57 pm

Well… Not sure if anybody saw this, but this was a weird one…

Ex-SDSU RB Adam Muema left the combine early, citing that God told him to.

–Perhaps the most bizarre story of the combine was that of Muema saying that God told him to leave the event, walking out before participating. Security was called to his room after he was not responding to people calling his name. He was in a “meditative state” on his bed before hotel security got involved, one source said. And with that, Muema likely just prevented himself from being drafted.–

Even more bizarre, Muema said God told him he would play for the Seattle Seahawks — his “dream” — if he skipped the combine.

  64. boolakanaka February 25, 2014 12:59 pm

Stanford opened its fourth year of spring practice under David Shaw on Monday. There are some new faces on the staff, but also one still to come.

Running backs coach Lance Taylor came from the Carolina Panthers, inside linebackers coach Peter Hansen came from the San Francisco 49ers, and outside linebackers coach Lance Anderson was promoted to defensive coordinator.

The defensive backs job is still open. Shaw said a hire should be made soon, but he’s not in a rush.

Per source, Shaw has offered the defensive backs job to former Texas defensive backs coach Duane Akina.

“It should be solved in the next week or so,” Shaw told repoters. “We’re not in a hurry right now. (Defensive graduate assistant) Marc Mattioli is a phenomenal football coach, and he can hold down the back end. I trust him completely. We’ve interviewed a couple. We’re waiting to see what happens.

“I’m not going to be rushed right now. Hopefully, we’ll get it done after this first session.”

  65. Lowtone123 February 25, 2014 1:10 pm

I give SS a lot of credit after he got wacked in 2012. Played like he was dodging bullets and running for his life. He came back to perform well despite his athletic shortcomings.

  66. st. anthony trojan February 25, 2014 1:17 pm

hmmm to bad them “aliens” never forget to take all them “tools” back with them to make all of those things that “even a piece of paper cannot fit”… me can only surmise that they came in the dead of night n helped “Noah” build the so called Ark..if ne one believes that…engineering has come a long way since the model “T” …n am pretty sure no one in detroit can believe how Henry first did it without ne “major tools”…can only say….we ain’t seen nothing yet… soon our homes will have no wires..n electricity.. with only one battery…n wireless charging… toke they do phones etc, now..was not to long ago me recalls.. that comics were “dreaming” of rockets to the moon…me thinks… we are just babes in the woods now as far as technology goes…thousands of steve jobs n bill gates are out there sum where..just waiting ti find the right “sperm” …IMUA

Still waiting for flying cars…in every garage. Dabadabadoo?

  70. Shoko February 25, 2014 1:32 pm

The thing that’s odd about Muema bailing on the combine isn’t so much the reason for packing up and skipping the event but the importance of the event itself in the eyes of scouts. Even if he felt that he wasn’t prepared and thought he wouldn’t put up decent drill times, there’s always Pro Day to improve those numbers. Any college player would kill to be invited to the combine.

I would think that God would have given better advice like tell him to stay his senior year and get his education with a chance to improve his draft stock. According to most scout boards, he was predicted to be borderline 7th round to undrafted free agent. With that kind of godly advice, prospective NFL teams got to be wondering what other advice would be given if they did take him.

  71. obachan February 25, 2014 1:36 pm

#57 In the big scheme of things I’m sure the game of football is pretty low on God’s to do list. However, if someone (football players included) is praying and seeking his will about a particular matter then it would not be unusual for God to answer and provide direction. In Muema’s case, time will eventually tell if he heard and understood accurately.

  72. Shoko February 25, 2014 1:38 pm

I think Schroeder’s stats really improved once Iosefa was healthy enough to play again. Schroeder was a smart dude and had a great work ethic but never really had the physical skills to be a great quarterback.

  73. obachan February 25, 2014 1:44 pm

#70 Yes Shoko, Muema’s actions and his explanation behind his decision certainly has raised a few eyebrows. Then again as the ole saying goes God’s ways are not man’s ways. If it was, then the shepherd boy David with his slingshot had no business being on the same field of battle with Goliath the giant.

  74. NotNasti February 25, 2014 1:49 pm

I think Muema WAS hearing a voice, but not God’s voice. It was the little green men in his head. Too bad for him, because the teams will stay far, far away from him (ala Davone Bess).

  75. NotNasti February 25, 2014 1:51 pm

I’m just glad Muema’s gone, because our defense made him look like Marshall Faulk.

  76. moocher February 25, 2014 1:56 pm

    ancient aliens……
when a building is being made (pyramids) there is a crane and other heavy equipment. when the building pau, the crane comes down and all you see left standing is the building. we dont ask “eh how that building was made” cause we know there was a crane. so why can’t we believe that they had a “crane” and other things to build the pyramid and then took the equipment away when finished same as we do today? but only aliens did it 🙂

bible does say something like “man was created in OUR image” our is plural, therefore, plural refers to as they or them or others…meaning a race of people which today we might choose to call “aliens”

    hmmmmmmmm

#32. Do you know what wrong doing Akana is accused of? The only “facts” that have come out is he’s on administrative leave and UH has reported a possible violation to the league office.

Speculation is it’s a recruiting violation and the Feds are involved. Do you know the specifics? What the violation is andwhy the Feds are involved. Just a yes or no answer is okay.

I think Warrior Dave is upset at the way you posted your scoop. You should have said you have information from a reliable source but can’t reveal the specifics other than it’s a recruiting violation and the Feds areinvolved.

but time is what they had plenty of i guess..

supposing a doctor named Bill genetically created humans….would someone then say, Bill created man in our image? they most certainly would.

mankind has a history of thinking of beings as gods if we cant comprehend things they do…surely the bible has been edited and will be interpreted in as many ways as there are people on earth. for the record i was raised catholic…just always had a hard time being told not to worship images and such yet spend time praying to a statue of the virgin mary…or being told not to kill man yet in leviticus it says to kill man for various reasons.

    anyway, lets talk football!!!!! 🙂

And my last comment on the Iolani Basketball Championship. I think it is interesting to note that not all private schools build championships with students brought in on financial aid. Iolani’s starting 5 do not receive aid. And don’t get me started on the issue of stalling…..hehe

It will be interesting to see how the SSC receipts trend with closing down the upper section for MVB. Let’s hope they go up, but I look forward to seeing the numbers regardless. Personally, I like the idea of having the option of cheaper seats, and letting folks spread out a bit.

#88 You ask good questions moocher as I’ve always believed that one should question one’s own beliefs and be able to critically defend and explain it and not just have a blind faith.
Short answer to your questions since this is ain’t no religion blog:
“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” God is doing the talking here and refers to himself as “our.”
I’m not a Catholic so I don’t pray to Mary. The Commandment not to kill should instead read: Thou shall not murder. Ratsach is the Hebrew word used in this Commandment and it is better translated as murder – not kill.
Sorry for the off-topic. Muema made me do it!

I don’t get into discussions about religion or The Great Pumpkin but the Aramaic (and the Bible was first written in this language) word was not “kill” but “murder”. So there is no contradiction – for example, killing in self-defense of self, family, and even nation.

Needless to add, you will get into splitting hairs on this one!
