    Howzit Tsaikos,

Its exciting to be playing in a bowl game.

And its great to see Melvin David with pads on again.

    Go Warriors!!!

  6. Hilo-Warrior December 19, 2016 12:54 pm

That was supposed to Davis. My phone and its auto correct

  7. Maddog50 December 19, 2016 1:07 pm

The Hunger Games-that’s what I call em. Who wants it more, who can stay focused thru the week, who wants to finish with a win more than the other guy. Central Michigan looked disinterested and just plain sloppy as they got torched by Tulsa-so we will see the progress of our Warriors as they take to the field. . . . .its this simple. Who wants it more. GoWarriors!!!!

Updating my Mainland & International Tsai-ko list, posted at:

If you have moved or never mentioned you reside outside of Hawaii, please post your city and state/country here on the blog. There might be other Tsai-kos near you.

Also, I noticed UH Road game tours next year for UCLA and UMass next year in the paper yesterday. Panda has set tours and UMass tours are pending. These are the only two known away game dates right now. But I vaguely recall some people saying they were going already, so I have posted the 2017 Tsai-ko Away Game logistics and party planner. Please email me or post your plans, even if tentative.

Yeah, good to see Mel Davis is still playing football. I thought he suffered some kind of illness that took football away from him. Hopefully, the guy can get healthy and UH will have a very formidable backfield with DSJ, Freddie Holly and Melvin Davis in 2017. Sound like could be potentially one of the best backfield in UH history.

I went to walmart looking for Hawaii bowl shirts and there were none to be found. nothing….nada! what’s up with that? I remember there were sugar bowl shirts being sold all over the place, and in different designs too. is this the failure of the university of Hawaii? the Hawaii bowl? both? I thought we were trying to bring back the pride back to the state?!

  11. Peskadot December 19, 2016 4:49 pm

Alexandria VA by way of Ewa Beach. I check Da beat daily lol. Da h-zone should carry dakine shirts from wallmart but they only like carry da expensive kine shirts. My favorite place for grab UH gear is k-mart.

    Great headline “Blue Christmas”, Tsai.

  13. Ohana Hawaii December 19, 2016 5:37 pm

University of Hawaii’s Head Coach Rolovich and the UH athletic director. Should sat down and talk about rescheduling the UH’s upcoming football schedule. Because the only two hard teams for next year is UCLA & BYU for none conference games. Why don’t they bring in North Dakota State, Northwest Missouri State for small college teams. Then Western Carolina!. And reschedule a game with Middle Tennessee again. And schedule games with LSU, Mississippi, Georgia Tech, Central Florida or Penn State University? . Because UNR plays with the big boys!. Head Coach Rolovich should know that? He was a OC at UNR football program. That is why, I’ve got most respect for UNR over UNLV!. But now they’re are changing and rescheduling their football schedule too. So! What happened to the old University of Hawaii football program that their use to play the big college before. When coach Tomey and June Jones were there!. Because it’s really show that the Warriors were aren’t scared at nobody!. Teams like Note Dame and Oklahoma. Players like the Bus! & Billy Sims and most of Tom Brady! . Hawaii had played with big school and big names players some in the Hall of Fame too!

  14. 808 December 19, 2016 6:48 pm

    Ohana Hawaii,

IIRC, I think coach Rolo and Matlin wants an out of conference schedule that has 1 difficult game, 1 winnable game and 2 games that can go either way (win or lose).

Is that what you were referring to in terms of out of conference schedule?

Sorry, but your post are extremely difficult to understand.

BTW, anybody remembers Billy Simms with Oklahoma playing against Hawaii? Ohana Hawaii seem to infer that he played against Hawaii? What year was it?

  15. 808 December 19, 2016 7:17 pm

    Ohana Hawaii,

Last game of the 1983 season, Oklahoma vs Hawaii. Wow, it seems like a long time ago.

Yes it would be nice seeing Hawaii play big name schools. But, I think there needs to be a balance with out of conference schedules. If Hawaii schedules all top programs in the power 5 conference, they will be all worn out by conference play.

Regarding future posts, have you considered having someone you know proof read and help you edit your post? Just a thought! Thanks!

“All I want for Christmas is my two Hawaii Bowl shirts” DPK, help, please. Checked the mail today and auwe, no more shirts. I don’t feel confident about the Hawaii Bowl results unless I’m dressed in proper attire. Please tell the Tsai Master “put them in the mail so UH can win the game!” Mahalo SM2

  17. Boya_jr December 19, 2016 11:47 pm

Just got back to SF from Hawaii. Nice week back home. I noticed more UH gear being worn around town than in recent memory. I’d like to see more fans putting their $6 Walmart UH flags on their cars. Seems like only ones doing that are for NFL teams.

#13 – no he needs desperately needs rehab.

  19. boolakanaka December 20, 2016 5:37 am

808 Hahhah. I played in that game. I remember Sam Moku got his first start and covered Buster Rhymes (the player not the rapper most of the night) most of the night. They (OKL) was pretty loaded, Marcus Dupree, Spencer Tillman, Danny Bradley, Derrick Sheppard…….it was pretty close all the way to the end.

  20. 808 December 20, 2016 6:43 am

The Tomey years! Dick Tomey always had defenses that could hit. Teams knew when they played Hawaii they were in a battle. If Hawaii could have defenses like those years again, the team would be near the top of the MWC every year.

Boolakanaka, wow it was nice to hear you were part of that game and part of that era. Thanks for sharing.

  21. Akamai Okole December 20, 2016 8:47 am

    Great Morning All!

    Hungree…

  22. H-Man December 20, 2016 8:53 am

In Tomey’s era many local players stayed at home to play. Now days, most choose to go elsewhere. So far from this recruiting class, only Kesi Ah Hoy has committed to the Warriors. Unfortunately, none of the other top local players are likely to commit to the Warriors, so Rolo and staff must count on getting players from American Samoa, Australia and the Mainland. Even getting players from American Samoa has been a struggle since they too opted for schools such as Washington St., but new DL coach Segi Suiaunoa is making a difference.

  23. turfwar December 20, 2016 9:46 am

Got to see Kahuku and Kesi Ah Hoy last night on the hardwood against a very good De la Salle team and although I have watched him play football in person several times and have always been impressed over the last two years I am even more excited now more than ever that this young man has chosen to be a Warrior. He is relentless as a defender and shows exceptional quickness and speed. He shadowed the best guard without much help and showed his athletic ability all night. But more than anything he showed tremendous heart. He just never lets up and gives everything he’s got as soon as he steps on the court. He inspires his teammates and just shuts up and plays. He personifies the best qualities one could ask for in an athlete and when he was fouled with seconds left in a tight game he stepped to the line and without hesitation swished two free throws that iced the game. Samuta Avea another future Bow made huge plays, can handle and pass, has major hops and is not afraid to do the dirty work under the boards. The best guard on the floor was Villa. He would be the best ball handler at UH right now. Kid is just solid. He is not a walk-on. He’s very deserving of a scholie and can play at a lot of places with his athleticism and quicks.

  24. boolakanaka December 20, 2016 10:06 am

    H-Man. Yes and No.

Since at least my time, big names have gone away, and a core group has stayed home. The big names of my graduating year were Leroy Lutu, John Kamana, (although infrequently mentioned in HS football lore, his brother Carter who went to KS, and was also a state champ in the long jump, was a two-year starter at cornerback at Michigan State–is a very underrated local guy and athlete), John Haina, Kaulana Park, and Niko Noga….only Niko stayed home. All the rest went away.

The year prior, the big names were Mark Tuinei and Wayne Apuna and they went away as well. I think the biggest distinction now is that there are very few hidden gems, that schools throughout the nation now even if a local kid is undersized or not yet polished, he will eventually be a keeper.

  25. H-Man December 20, 2016 10:56 am

Hi Boola, always enjoy your insight and feedback.

  26. turfwar December 20, 2016 11:12 am

boo, I remember the recruiting battle for Lutu took a lot out of Tomey. He even had the Governor involved. Coach felt that if Lutu made the switch to DE/OLB he would have been a 10 year NFL guy. But no regrets on getting Noga out of that crew. He proved to be everything you could want for a growing program that also proved beneficial for years with the addition of future Nogas. To this day I also still think Wayne Apuna was as gifted a athlete as has ever come out of this state. He should have been a long time NFL guy and maybe even a pro bowl caliber type. He ran and moved like a 6′ 180 pound athlete but carried 235 on a 6’3″ frame. Don’t ever recall what happened to him. Kinda disappeared without finishing his career at ASU. I remember him lighting up someone on a crossing pattern. Might have been Walter Murray?

  27. Maddog50 December 20, 2016 11:12 am

Saw the press conference for HB. Good ol country boy schmoozin the audience (Coach Stockstill). Here is what I want for Christmas-a flesh eating, throat grabbin, foot stompin performance from our country boys!!! GoWarriors!!!!

  28. A-House December 20, 2016 11:54 am

    #26:

did Wayne Apuna finish at ASU? heard he dropped out after his sophmore year.

  29. SteveM December 20, 2016 11:58 am

A-House — I vaguely recall saying you were going to the UMass game. Going with Panda if true?

  30. boolakanaka December 20, 2016 12:05 pm

Turf and H-man, I think like any person from a certain period, you feel that your era was the best–that said, that was certainly the golden era of football, both from a prep and college level, for Hawai’i. A rare combination of upper level talent and fan participation. Prep bowls near 30K, every Saturday night was a plus 45000 stadium.

As for Wayne Apuna, or what was, I think, the first Parade All-American, first teamer from Hawai’i, bruddha had a bad case of what I would call the “heads”. First of all, he could flat out play—period. But he went from big head, which went to stupid head, which went to head case, we all make bad decisions as young men, its too bad he could not have gotten on field more, as he did most of his playing time during his freshmen year. Had all the talent in world to have been a ten year player in the NFL.

As for Leroy, he actually might have been better suited to play D. Ironically, we were loaded at outside linebackers during that era; Alvis Satele, ML Johnson, Anthony Woodsen, John Taylor, Pete Noga, all played pro ball. So, the fun question to ask is whether he would have cracked the lineup?

  31. A-House December 20, 2016 12:06 pm

UH played many very good teams the last game of each season during the 70s

USC with Charles White – Nebraska – Oklahoma – and many were close to the very end — remember the Selmon brothers? many opposing coaches left his 1st string in well into the 4th quarter.

yep, UH defense back then were just hard nose — no big names; just tough, hard hitting players who constantly ran to the ball carrier

  32. boolakanaka December 20, 2016 12:10 pm

Steve M–If I recall correctly Wayne left his sophomore year, but then came back, which would have been his junior year. I think he had to make-up like 20-25 credits in the summer to be eligible for that fall, and well, by then they had a new coaching regime, that had basically given up on him as well….despite all that, he still remains one of the greatest HS football players in the state’s history.

  33. A-House December 20, 2016 12:13 pm

    SteveM:

UMass trip up in the air right now as UMass has asked to move the date from 10/7

rumor has it moving into September and travel agencies want to solidify air and hotel, but must wait until a decision is made.

Panda Travel has already canceled all their hotel and air reservations

itinerary will be the major factor in selecting travel agency.

  34. A-House December 20, 2016 12:17 pm

Wayne Apuna was the only Hawaii HS football player to be listed as nation’s #1 at linebacker

believe Ulu Perry was #1 as a center and guard his senior year by different rating systems.
