Blaze due back in late April
Word on the street is that Blaze Soares, who is recovering from an achilles’ injury, is projected to receive medical clearance in late April.
That will be too late for him to participate in spring ball, but enough time to prepare for the Aug. 3 start of training camp.
* * *
Newcomers are scheduled to report Aug. 1. The returning players must report by Aug. 2. And the first practice of training camp is Aug. 3.
* * *
It’s a pretty loud street. Apparently the latest word is that the Boise State-UH football game will be the last one on the WAC’s regular-season 2009schedule. The game will be televised nationally.
* * *
It’s always refreshing for a player to take the initiative to train on his own. Here’s offensive tackle Brent Leonard working out this morning:
* * *
Coach Mack has said Jeramy “J.B.” Bryant is the leading candidate to start at one of the corner positions. He also might compete as a nickelback.
* * *
Of the many contenders to start at left defensive end (John Fonoti has locked up the right side), Elliott Purcell is one of the most highly regarded.
* * *
What UH told recruits in January and February became official today: Mike Bellotti is stepping down as Oregon’s head coach to become the school’s athletic director.

Kekoa brings us this update on Florida Ted:
-
Florida Patti Writes:Just wanted to give you a recent update on my dear Florida Ted. He is out of CCU and they have moved him to another room downstairs. His speech is improving each day, however he seems to have lost his German. I am sure in time this will come back to him also. Two days ago he could not read the alphabet ( I made him a little chart) but today he got most of the letters correct.
He is able to get out of bed and can walk the halls without a walker. His last test (yesterday) showed he had more damage than we thought, so he will have to go to re-hab. After that, only time will tell, but hopefully I will have my “strong warrior” back, and better than ever. We believe God gave him a second chance, for this we are all grateful.
Once again we thank you all for the lovely e-mails and words of encouragement. God bless each and everyone of you!!!!

You, too, may have a screen saver of our Moms — Coloma and Mama Mia:
Would be good to see him in April!
The WAC football schedule is almost done?
Top 5. Cheehee.
Good news about Blaze. I’m sure Avery from Boise St. still remembers him well from their last trip to Aloha Stadium.
Any news about whether UH will be able to avoid the dreaded 3 road games in a row?
Wow, so this is what it’s like to be top 5 again. You keep refreshing and a new pic keeps popping up each time. Ooh, wonder who’s next?
I heard a tentative WAC schedule is being circulated. Apparently UH will have several ESPN/ESPN2 appearances.
truegreen:
I think UH will avoid the three-games-in-a-row scenario. But the Warriors might have to have a second back-to-back situation. We’ll see.
Syracuse and Uconn going toe to toe right now on ESPN. Game before this one was a one pt squeaker with Vilanova beating Marquette at the buzzer to advance to the Big East semi’s.
Kekoa, are you sure that’s live? I bet you lunch it goes to 6 OT’s…
And if you take UConn, I’ll give you eight points.
Syracuse and Uconn are playing again? Didn’t they have enough yesterday?
Bryant (JB) looks speedy, but could use a few extra pounds of muscle.
Looking forward to seeing a healthy Blaze!
It is a 6 OT game that was worth seeing again from the beginning…right Al?
morning everyone
Testing, 1-2-3
How weird. The Tizer’s Web site is down, but not the blog.
It’s usually the other way around.
w/ Uconn’s loss yesterday and espn’s continued love for uconn, unc and pitt to all get #1 seeds, does louisville get the last #1 seed if they win out in the big east tourney…
a 2nd back to back road trip, hopefully idaho’s included somewhere in that one, would be tough to have to play 2 out of these 3 latech/nevada/sjsu in a back to back situation
HIYA!
ST- yeah- I just looked and got this:

Yep. We’re now the official emergency broadcast network.
Tough two game outing for the Rainbow Wahine last night. I stopped by after work to catch the late start of the Cal Berkley game and Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu seemed to struggle all night on the “mound”, not to mention the numerous times Cal-Berkley was able to keep on stealing bases. It was just frustrating.
Hopefully they can regroup and get back at it today and tomorrow.
ST, I thought Blaze had a calf injury last year. Is the achilles injury a different one or the same as last year? Did they mis-diagnose the original injury?
I see Tadd Fujikawa is doing pretty well in Puerto Rico. Good for him.
Bringing this over from the previous blog topic, didn’t know this one was up……….too busy working! 🙂
Breakfast CC at Tasty Crust for the Maui scrimmage. Anytime after 7:00 AM till whenever. Drop by after getting off the plane/ferry. A section has been reserved for the Tsai-kos. For the Maui Tsai-kos, drop by before the game.

al is doing a EIS soon…………
It was very cloudy in Maunawaili yesterday. Very cloudy.
And yet I see Midori7driving … with her sunglasses on.
It’s really an achilles injury.
I’m surprised UH doesn’t employ the slap/hit-and-run offense.
And, no, I’m not talking about Chris Brown.
kekoa….what size was that foot that got stuck in your mouth?
har, har,har.
i actually did watch parts of that uconn game.
I watched SportsCenter at something like 4 this morning — my daughter forgets the 6-hour-time difference from the East Coast — and the highlights of the UConn-Syracuse game took about 11 minutes.
duffer….c’mon a govt worker is too busy working? on maui?
[…] The Warrior Beat | UH football, University of Hawaii athletics … […]
Did I miss the boat? What is the slap/hit-and-run offense?
I wonder if Keliikipi knew Bellotti was leaving?
For softball.
Almost every school has slap hitters with speed at the top of the order. They get on base, and they run.
UH has more of an Earl Weaver offense.
I’d respond, but I’m too busy working!
Shouldn’t he be in class right now? 😆
Tadd’s gonna make the cut this week. That’s 3 for 3 this year on the PGA tour. Pretty darn good. Better than D. Wilson & McLachlin.
hmmmm.
too busy setting up the tee times for weekend, eh?
Al ~ You watched it ‘live’ and didn’t give us play-by-play?!
Seriously, I watched the barn burning ending paht…but wanted to see it from the start. In my excitement to get the replay note posted, I forgot to say that it was being featured and will go down as one of the all time great games of the playoffs.
Not at all disappointed in the way both teams battled and kept it tied most of the 1st half. I thought Syracuse looked like the stronger team, but then the Conn men kept coming on strong! 12:00 min left in the half before the OT games begin!
I’m gonna assume Wade Keliikipi must’ve had a feeling belotti wasn’t gonna be there in September, wonder how much things will change w/ chip kelly in there as HC. i know the o won’t change much so that’s good for masoli
Homey ~ Tadd Fujikawa has a pair of Orange golf slacks he wore yesterday. Too bad he didn’t let C_C know he had ’em…not that it made much difference in the end. At least C_C could have made a final fashion statement for the season.
Don’t think Tadd goes to school anymore.
I keep thinking how Masoli could have been a Warrior except UH was too polite.
ST ~ What’s all the hush-hush in the OIA/ILH tower of power? Georges Gilbert gets served some serious papers and it gets vewy, vewy quiet in their world. This kona be fun when da news does hit the wires.
this is a cut throat business, i guess UH has to get that “hawaii” mentality out of their system, but that’s okay, got faith in coach mac
Speaking of golf, does the HA have a PSA section where I can advertise a golf fundraiser? For FREE
Tadd goes to Moanalua HS where you don’t have to go to classes to graduate, correspondence courses available–they want everyone to be happy and graduate on time…right Jason…
Actually, I think there’s a weekly golf section.
Call Curtis: 525-8017.
Is that the one where he got served by a guy who might have been SMU’d?
Who was the Mater Dei turned PAC10 QB who LOST to Hawaii?

Danny ONeill of Oregon in the mid 90’s
Hey ST did you get a chance to tell my fellow Trojan alumnus Kortney that Bryson said hi if not could you thanks.
Just so I don’t jinx Blaze; let me just say, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”….and keeping my fingers crossed.
I thought Tadd graduates in May???
Possibilities of a season/conference final game between UH/BSU????..SWEET!!!
Re: Recruiting, gotta think long term. Whether you’re “polite” or cutthroat, it always comes back to you.
I see that Tad is doing well, but nobody posts a score. How well is well?
A-House – Shot a 68 today. 6 under for the tourney.
ah very very true — truegreen

Al ~ You watched it ‘live’ and didn’t give us play-by-play?!
nah, i leave the play-by-play to ralph and stretch, the two leahey wannabe’s.
Yep that would be the guy. There could have been collateral damage to others if he wanted. He’s not like that. Some people are.
Hey, I think UH is a BCS school because it played in a BCS game.
AFAIK, Tadd is still in school. But I don’t know him, so IDK. I’ve never heard of correspondence classes at Moanalua, but then again, I always went to class. 😀

Thank you for the update, Kekoa. Check your e-mail in a minute, please.
Good morning Tsai-kos!
Hope everyone is keeping warm. It was COLD (for Hawaii, don’t need any snide remarks from the continental Tsaikos) this morning! If there’s global warming, then why is it so cold?
Thanks Kekoa for sharing the email.
Thank for the udate, Kekoa.
I moved the text to the top.
jm2375 – The cold is a side-effect of global warming. Don’t you watch Nat Geo?
Thank you ST, I’ll pass that on to Florida Patti with a link for her to the HA site so she can print it out for Ted.
Is that on after Gossip Girl?
Just reading the article on the Softball Bows on the Hawaii Athletics site and I didn’t even realize Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu came in for relief for Sarah Robinson as I arrived after the second game started. I was wondering if and when she would start this year.
Tough way to start her college career. But if family genes are any indication, the younger Robinson should be able to be a big part of this program’s success in the years to come. One doesn’t earn the accolade of top female athlete in her high school for nothing!
Awesome win for the BaseBOWS last night. I couldn’t believe they dropped a 5 run lead after six innings. I thought Don Robbs was going to pass out after calling a game saving out by the Bows at the top of the 10th. Vinnie Catricala is going to be the man this year barring injury… and… HE’S GOT A YEAR LEFT TO GO!!! Well… there is the draft after this season… 👿
ST,
You covering Saturday’s 1pm Wahine softball game against St. John’s?
jm23mama ~ Just put another log on the fire. Hubby can always saw you more!
Kekoa,
Thanks for keeping us up to date with Florida Ted’s situation.
those on the Kohler watch, Arizona started spring practice last week…last depth chart listed him at third team guard…Beirne is listed at 3rd team qb…Smith, out of St. Louis, is listed as transfer notables. Tupoiluto (sp) out of Kahuku is #1 at NT, followed by Mikaele
I hope that Blaze doesn’t rush back from injury and that he’s fully healthy by the August training camp! Even more important, I hope that once he’s back he’s able to have an injury-free season…he adds an intimidation factor and experience to a fairly inexperienced LB group.
Thank you for the update on FloridaTed! I will write a card to him today.
Nice mention of David Veikune.
Florida Patti,
You cannot keep a Warrior down. However, the short time a Warrior is down, just gives the Warrior time to contemplate his next victory.

I think I’ve seen that place before. Dats da one by University Ave? The “gigi” part caught my attention before.
Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!
Blaze coming back? Yee Haaaaw! Thanks for update ST. I hope he’s not pushing it, though.
Good to hear the good progress news about FloridaTed. Thank you!
FloridaTed and FloridaPatti-
Looking forward to meeting both of you!
Jojo’s in the house. Hey there jojo!
Gossip Girl? All I do is watch the Discovery channel.
jojo – I hope you never have to use your screensaver.
morning gang!
continued prayers for the Florida Ted’s speedy recovery
Homey:
I just e-mailed you a better screensaver.
hiya jojo ® & Addahknowsports© !
homey ℞ – whoosh, have no idea what a gossip girl is
Stephen – great news on Blaze’s recovery, was Brent practicing alone?
ST – ROTFLMFAO! That’s a good one!
jojo: Ahhhhhh!!! I told ST, good target practice!
Loa – There’s a bunch of them on the pink side.
homey ℞ – ah, is that what they call themselves? 🙂
Hi Loa-
I’ll meet you, too, one day. Maybe at practice.
Haven’t ventured over to the pink side yet.
Holy cow, ST!! Share with me, please….My ears are ringing…..
Loa:
Brent Leonard was practicing by himself. Then a half hour later, the rest of the o-linemen showed up for unsupervised workouts.
Loa:
I sent you a cool pix of Blaze. I was thinking of making T-shirts.
Sometimes I think that Blaze can’t handle a full season of college football. At the moment, he’s more of a myth. Hope he can turn it around.
Wow, I thought Bellotti would coach a couple more seasons before the transition. I think Chip Kelly will do fine though. That game against Oklahoma State was just about the best bowl game last season so it’s a nice out.
Coloma:
I sent you that pix, too.
(For the curious, it’s a picture of Blaze giving me the finger.)
Hiiya Addahknowsports©! Let’s go to practice, so we can meet Loa and Homey. I haven’t gone over to the pink side either… 🙁
Stephen – thanks, good for Brent, hope he keeps it up
for some reason i can see Kazz using that for his screen saver
permanent makeup?
aren’t those tattoos?
i offered the boss a pair of permanent eye makeup once. i think she was afraid of the pain.
Just wanted to drop in and say hello! TGIF! Heading to the golf course after work for a pau hana drink!! JJ — Stretch is calling you out on the pink side, hehe =)
Interesting to see the folders on the computer screen with the mommy background.
(J)J and Stretch communicate together on the pink side?
ST – Is your twitter clock on eastern time?
Howzit, Rob25!!!!!!!
homey: check your PM on the pink side! Sheeesh….
Geez, now I can’t get ABBA out of my head.
Jason: me too!!
Hi Coloma!
Been down with a bad cold, but getting back to normal, in relative terms.
you can dance, you can jive
having the time of your life
knowing me, knowing you (ah-haa)
there is nothing we can do
Hiya!
Great news on Florida Ted.
Whoosh!
Wait,
Is it “Brent” or “Brett” Leonard?
Fair enough. What makes it so “painful” for fans is that the times he did play in 2007, he made a big difference enough for everyone to want more.
Blaze Soares – da man, da myth, da tunda
Big C – No new PM’s.
The spring 2009 Island Sports Media is here and should be a in all Times Super Markets and Fort Street Magazine by this weekend.
Mahalo to JJ’s Broiler on Kauai for being the distributor on the Garden Island.

I can see (J)J singing this ABBA song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuB8xWeA59I
homey: Dang you! Now I got that song stuck in my head!
BTW, didn’t they use that song in Mamma Mia movie from last year?
CRW – You watched Momma Mia! BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Nah, just kidding, I have the DVD.
Yes, it was in the movie. At the end during the wedding party.
…..on second thought, that entire movie was filled with ABBA songs.
TGIF, time to party! See y’all laterz.
#121 that’s either a “duh” revelation or a gigi moment.
and i bet she never heard of abba.
So what is the correlation between ABBA songs, Momma Mia DVDs, the Pink side, and (J)James karaoke singing?
….for the possible benefit of those who do not attend karaoke calls… 🙄

A WAC Championship game in November at Aloha Stadium. Can you say: sellout?
Good to hear that FloridaTed continues to improve 🙂
Is everyone at the BaseBow game?
Not enough seats at the stadium for everyone.
My Mass tomorrow will be for Florida Ted and Family.
Have to chime in when Mater Dei is mentioned by Big Wave. Great Factoid on Danny O’Neill. Are you sure Billy Blanton at SDSU might have played Warriors? He is still my top QB from MD, (HS Wise)
Watching USC-UCLA game and it reminds me of the fifties, when that was the only game in town, before Rams and Dodgers et al!
STsai, a little coaching from a vet…. keep your hands away from your face while on TV. try pinching to remember. All is well in the Desert as golf score declines!
I hope that this doesn’t happen to any of the Warriors during Pro Day…I remember last year 3 of the 4 WRs had hamstring injuries, but at least this didn’t happen.
Another article about the injury during Texas Tech’s Pro Day.
The Reno paper had a little information about every WAC team before Spring Practice starts. Info on some of the teams is below.
Great news about FloridaTed.
About Dwayne Johnson’s slamming Hawaii in that SNL skit — eh, I hope he never escapes from Witch Mountain. 😉
Wow. You can almost hear the wind whistling through the broken windows, the creaking of the busted door on the saloon, and the rustle of the tumble-weeds as they blow through the deserted town.
Where is everyone?
The camera slowly pans and zooms to the end of the street. The blowing dust obscures the objects. A lonely tumble-weed blows across the street as the wind dies and the dust settles.
Too late! The Pony qb has enough time only to catch a brief glimpse of very large and enraged green somethings and four distinct flashes of searing pain. Then blackness and the muffled sound of complete pandemonium until four of the Warriors slowly get up of his now badly bruised body.
The Tsai-ko Card Section holds up the number 13 and slowly changes it to 14, the number of opposing qb’s crumpled by the Warrior “D”.
Had a good day at golf. Made the other team pay for the 19 hole. Our Friday gang play for who will pay for the 19th hole. Ala wai was good to me today. My 38-42 was real good.
Hang in there F Ted…
The base ball team is not doing too good tonight as the pitcher is not sharp.
In this week’s WB show, Mac talked about how Maka had to wait forever to find out if he’d get another year via a medical redshirt and hoped that Libre wouldn’t have to wait that long. Texas submitted the info for WR Shipley even before the season ended and his extra year (2009) was granted before last season ended. They applied for that medical redshirt probably about 4-6 months before UH applied for Libre. Now, UCLA got *two* players the medical redshirt results already…it is my impression that for years UH never found out this early about a medical redshirt!
Great golf day Momo!

In one of the top stories for HA is the Red Cross drive with a picture of Alan Hackbarth the firefighter. Wasn’t he also a former football Warrior? Just wondering….

I don’t think that Bellotti stepping down at Oregon is a big shock to any of the 2009 recruits that they signed (like Wade). Back in December it was announced that Chip Kelly would be taking over for Bellotti some time in the near future, with Bellotti predicted to decide if he wanted to be AD in March.
On January 2, Oregon let two assistant coaches go and Chip Kelly, not Bellotti, chose the replacement coaches. So, it was clear that Kelly was setting up his coaching staff. All this happened well before NLI day. One of the new assistants that Chip Kelly picked was Oregon’s new DL coach (Azzinaro)…who will now be Wade’s position coach.
Momo,
Wish we could join you folks and Nan’s family in Australia! Our Spring Break doesn’t happy until April. I’m sure that you all will have a great time.
A super morning to all!

Good Morning All!
Great news about the players, nice pics too!
Really great news about Ted. Get better soon, buddy!
What a COLD morning this is…
Morning everyone!
Last night’s baseball game was rather interesting. Personally, LMU should have won that game but the less-than-stellar fielding from that SS and a wild pitch proved to be the difference. They pretty much handed us that game…..no way a team only musters two hits (one of them on a IMO blown call) and wins the game regardless of the number of BBs issued, but that’s just what happened to UH last night.
We’ll see how the BaseBows do tonight!
Did anyone read about what happened at the WAC Tournament last night?

CRW ~ Are we sure that the mysterious $100 donor was not our very own C_C?
Wafan-
Sure! forward me the details.
Gmornin Tsaiks!
Good 8th inning last nite!
For a long moment there, I thought we were at LMU’s batting practice. Those boys were teeing off on us. Kinda made all my yappin’ all for naught.
Briefly saw ST at last nights softball game.
I gotta say, that braddah look handsome when he all serious and working hard!
Kekoa—Would C_C wear a Nevada shirt? Don’t know if that’s characteristic of C_C to be rooting for the ‘odda team.
If the article said “…a man in an orange jacket offered the Utah State mascot $100 to go grab the mustache,” then perhaps it might be C_C indeed.
CRW . . .
A lot of young people have no common sense and do just about anything for some cash. I sure hope the kid faces assault charges. Maybe he can be the example for others.
ST,
You get mail in both accounts.
CRW ~ Good observation. C_C might wear a Syracuse Orange shirt, but never Nevada!
Brew . . .
I think it was the Farrington Band that used to play slow and dirty . . .
Goin’ to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
Goin’ to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
Got some crazy little women there
I’m gonna get me one . . .
Or, if you prefer musicals . . .
Ev’rythin’s up to date in Kansas City
They’ve gone about as fur as they c’n go!
They went and built a skyscraper seven stories high,
About as high as a buildin’ orta grow . . .
MsLiz ~ A belated birthday wish for baby Lilu! She was born so close to Girls day too!
New post up
Chris Brown likes to watch too much stuff on youtube. His favorite show on youtube is the “Stupid Mario Brothers”
chris is a good person he has never been in trouble before leave him alone.
He is able to get out of bed and can walk the halls without a walker. His last test (yesterday) showed he had more damage than we thought, so he will have to go to re-hab. After that, only time will tell, but hopefully I will have my “strong warrior” back, and better than ever. We believe God gave him a second chance,
