Be cool

RENO — The Warriors awakened to 28-degree weather this morning.

OK, OK, that was the temperature  outside the hotel. It was nice in the meeting rooms, and it should reach the 50s today.

The Warriors had a 2-hour practice scheduled this afternoon at a nearby high school field.

Chinese President is coming in for APEC apparently. Military and HPD are on the Vineyard on ramp and stationed on the pedestrian overpasses and freeway overlooks just outside. They may be closing the freeway to accomodate his arrival. Some pretty heavy stuff.

    Be careful out there folks!

Dragged this over from last blog.

My one comment about the Penn St. thing.

When JoePa found out about Sandusky he should have:

A.) Taken a baseball bat to Sandusky, with a special emphasis on his soft spots.

B.) Notified the police to come and lock the piece of chit up.

C.) Notified the higher ups at PSU.

D.) Have beer and be thankful to God for the successes he’d had as coach and a defender of youth.

  24. Kevin November 10, 2011 8:09 am

Something to consider with the events of the last two days, especially the madness last night.

I’ve written time and time again about the way we as a society blindly worship INDIVIDUALS and how it has allowed those we see on a pedestal above all else in the sports world to gain massive egos and get paid insane salaries. As a society, we justify arrogance. THIS IS TRUTH.

What was NOT shown or at least what was not discussed and put more into the light was the students at Penn State that remain fans of their football program but are not taking this Paterno thing as if the world had ended.

When June Jones was meeting with SMU some bloggers here and others took their displeasure with Herman Frazier to Hawaii Hall in protest. No cars were flipped and no damage was done. People cited that they would cease to be season ticket holders if Frazier remained on duty at UH Manoa athletics, but no beer kegger parties and rallies followed. The most I did, besides bitch and moan endlessly to my to the annoyance of my friends, was to drive around with masking tape on my back windshield the message “SAVE UH, FIRE FRAZIER”… hey, I got some honks from cars out of it!!! 😎

That is not false idol worship to the degree we’ve seen in the past 24 hours, BUT that culture does exist in our society.

When NFLers tried to go on strike, some sided with the players and some with the owners, but one thing remained the same, we all cried “what about the fans?” Guess what??? Taking sides in a war between MILLIONARES and BILLIONARES is proof that the seeds of FALSE WORSHIP remains in those that were hypocritical in their belief it should be about the fans, but yet felt sympathy for those players that still would remain in the HIGHER upper class of the economic social ladder but would have to play a few more games as a result at the same pay as before… OH BOO FREAKIN HOOO.

When you get paid a few cool million or even in the high to mid six figure mark for playing X amount of games and you are asked to play two more at the same salary or even a few less that doesn’t compare to someone with a salary of 35K to 40K at 40 hours a week being asked to work 50-55 hours a week. GET REAL. But we feel sympathy because our society says… “they are on TV so they must be somebody right????”

Paterno is NOTHING more than a football coach, a very successful one. THAT’S IT.

It’s not that hard to peel away the BS, but for some of those not even linked to the PSU program, it’s easy to get caught up in the lore of someone so distant thanks to the hype.

Technically, if I had to categorize myself and my religious up-bringing , it would have to be Christian/Catholic (whatever SAME thing, titles and classification are dictated by man anyway fueled by ego) and I was taught “no man is greater than Him”. Makes sense to me.

In college athletics, I always said no one individual comes before an institution or a program, especially if you have ties to that institution. For myself, I AM a product of the University of Hawaii and I pride myself in what it represents despite the actions or LACK THEREOF by those running it from above. The institution is greater than them.

Paterno is nothing more than a man. As a man placed in a position of near ultimate authority over those under him, he should be subject to such scrutiny in this case. Via phone call or not, the result in the end was just. PSU doesn’t owe him a damn thing in light of what has transpired when he himself admitted “I wish I did more” when referring to notifying the authorities. The PSU president got his as well, rightfully so.

In the end, I have enjoyed seeing and hearing all the over-reactions and incoherent justifications of “one more year!!!” for Paterno. It makes me proud to know, I am not at the level of those people.

RE: Early LOI signing period non-football sports.

For softball, I mentioned the five names of prospects that visited UH in September of this year. Of the five, four had publically-known verbals to UH and could be found online thru recruiting websites and the websites of their softball travel clubs as well as local media.

As of this morning, three have submitted their LOIs to UH.

One has signed her LOI to South Dakota State and the status of the 5th of the five mentioned a few days ago remains unconfirmed.

Holy moly…bundle up, ST and Warriors! All the best to Greg Salas…what a total bummer that was to see last week.

I don’t think Waikiki will *EVER* look like this again. Crazy! There’s chain-link fence all around the property, AND a uniformed soldier with a really big firearm at the entrance to the hotel.

Walked my Sweety to work, then walked back to find Lunalilo Freeway completely empty and all freeway on ramps blocked off, predestrian overpasses blocked and then finally, the massive motorcade of the Chinese President speeding past. 50. Buffoman November 10, 2011 9:41 am

Several weeks ago I saw them do a practice run on Ala Moana. Made me proud of the work of our HPD. They worked very effeciently and will it did cause us to sit a bit, it was not overly intrusive. Of course all of this is an inconvenience, yet I believe that it is a small price to pay for what we are doing to represent our place in the Pacific and the US.

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid November 10, 2011 9:44 am

Think this might work for us?

A junior college coach in Michigan is using a combination of the pistol, the run and shoot, and the triple option to devastating effect at Grand Rapids Community College. They are undefeated, ranked #4 and are averaging 65 points a game! Unreal. Check it out.

UH used to run the triple-option.

This requires getting receivers who only block, slotbacks who are running backs, different linemen. You know, basically changing the entire offensive roster.

Speaking of Salas, I think he and Pilares spoiled a lot of fans by their athleticism and physicality at the receiver position. Pilares, an ex-running back, could take the hits but was just a juke step away from going all the way. With Salas, he was looking for someone to collide with after the catch. He wanted to punish the DBs as much as they wanted to punish him.

  69. d1shima November 10, 2011 10:57 am

That being said I have never seen so many injuries to both the Oline and receivers.

I remember people complaining that we never sub receivers. Really tho, that is how they got so good. As a plus they tended to wear down the secondary too.

I also remember thinking how if you never let the second stringers play on the OL, how they ever gonna get good? Well, I guess it’s a case of be careful of what you wish for….

  83. Buffoman November 10, 2011 12:51 pm

#70 You right! Maybe that’s why I look at Stutz and wonder why I’m not really liking what he’s doing. Yes he catches, but he’s not built physically and mentally like Salas and runs out of bounds or falls. You’re right about Salas, he’d be looking for someone th run over or challenge for a spot on the field. Pilares, well that guy was like muscle, tendons and bone. For a not so tall guy he was fearless over the middle and really could take a hit. Have not seen much of that. Yes, we were spoiled.

Okay, time to move on and accept that that was then, this is now. Different.

  84. Ed November 10, 2011 1:15 pm

Being in the postion Hawaii is in with injuries etc… and inexperience, it is imperative that our coaches THINK !! and react outside the box. Look at Boise, you just never know what your going to see, there coaches always seems to be one step ahead. Let’s have some fun with our offense, if opponents know that Hawaii will do the same thing every single time, its pretty easy to prepare for. Just my 2 cents !!

It would be refreshing to see some trickeration-type plays. It might work and it might not, but to see them take chances is always exciting. If Graves is going to play receiver, right there you have two QB’s that can run and pass. It would would have the defense wondering how the play will develop. Keep it unconventional.

I wonder if JD has ever approached Georgia Tech for a H-H series.

That would be fun to watch.

  101. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 10, 2011 3:06 pm

I will admit I was one of those that said the triple option wouldn’t work in the ACC or at best it would last a season or two before defenses would adapt.

Well, Johnson continues to amaze me. He really has this team running on all cylinders.

  102. Ralph November 10, 2011 3:08 pm

Georgia Tech, you kidding, JD is looking for teams we can beat. Are there more start up programs like Lamar and South Alabama to schedule, if you know, email him. He needs wins, he wants coach mac to win, and Hawaii needs 7 to reach the Hawaii bowl.

  103. Ralph November 10, 2011 3:09 pm

There are no gimmies in the WAC and MWC for Hawaii, we need to beat the OOC teams to ease the way to 7 wins.

Actually that’s pretty funny. I challenge JD to schedule the most obscure unknown colleges in the US.

  109. Kevin November 10, 2011 3:24 pm

Would prefer a FIVE year deal at $425,000.00 with the incentives and bonuses AND a HEFTY penalty should he decide to seek other offers prior to year FIVE.

  110. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 10, 2011 3:29 pm

UH is looking to spend just around $700,000 on its next FB coach but $350,000 on its Bball coach. Considering how important the FB program is to pull in the revenue, that sounds a bit off.

UH Softball signs FOUR for the spring of 2013.

Only included the quotes. Full background of each player can be found at the Hawaii Athletics link.

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/11/10/SB_1110115535.aspx

HONOLULU—University of Hawai’i head softball coach Bob Coolen announced the signing of four prep standouts who will play for the Rainbow Wahine in the spring of 2013. Kristina Akiona, Lindsey “Keiki” Carlos, Loie Kesterson, and Alyssa Villalpando all signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Rainbow Wahine this week during the early signing period.

“Kristina is our future shortstop that can also play third base. She hits for power, has good size, has a strong arm and will fit in well in our program.” says Coolen.

“Keiki is projected to be a pitcher/third baseman for us. She is the complete player. Keiki has the ability to hit for power but also contact, she throws hard and will be an asset for us next year as a freshman.”

“Loie is a left-handed pitcher/outfielder and a right-handed hitter who is projected to play both positions while at UH. She has good discipline at the plate and can hit for consistency and power. As a pitcher, she throws in the low-to-mid 60’s with movement. Since watching her the past three seasons, she has improved tremendously and she and Keiki will have to make an immediate impact with the departure of senior pitcher Stephanie Ricketts,” states Coolen.

“Alyssa is a catcher/first base/third base player who is a power hitter. Over the past three years, she has developed into an experienced, seasoned catcher who handles her pitchers well and is a force behind the plate,” says Coolen.

  113. madeinhawaii November 10, 2011 3:54 pm

    iwwthm,

Das what I’ve been saying. Put your money where the revenues are… salaries should reflect total revenues… Make it a constant percentage of the gross for sports that collect admission… with the exception of sports that have only started to collect in the past 3-5 years. 305K is 50% of the projected Football HC salary? But are the bottom line profit from BB 1/2 that of the football program?

  116. Derek November 10, 2011 4:27 pm

#75 that’s a good one, but believe it or not the 2010 NCAA coaches salaries show that Coach Mack and Joe Paterno both made $1.1 million. For a guy who has been the head coach at Penn State for 46 years and won 2 natl championships I thought that was quite shocking.

  117. Hawaiianbod November 10, 2011 4:28 pm

  120. Really? November 10, 2011 5:07 pm

Joe Paterno had to go, no doubts. Now that he’s gone and tarnished (for good reason) how does a coach whos been around for 25 plus years take over? He didn’t know also? The media was very concentrated and specific in getting Joe canned (and I agree) but now that he’s gone, we give Sandusky a free pass (until prison, he’s more than a marked man), and the rest of the staff is okay, hell some of them have been there forever. Lastly, after seeing the concentrated effort to get JoPa fired, when do we start kicking in church doors, arresting those pukes accused of the same heinous crimes and not rest in the media until justice is done? Answer those questions media while you slap yourselves on the back and yuck it up in the name of doing “what’s right”. You got one guy to stand on the carpet (JoPa) and be accountable for it and I applaud you for it, but how about the thousands of others you have been either gutless or intimidated to go after because they wear robes and call themselves priests. When do we get to fire or prosecute a Pope or other head of religions who have hid predators for a thousand years, paid out cash for silence and never apologized to? Well media? Just frustrated and thinking out loud Tsaikos. Bear with me………

  121. Old Diver November 10, 2011 5:35 pm

    #122

The media was posing questions about the abuse for two years. Penn State stonewalled the media for those two years. You can’t blame the media for Paterno’s ouster. Paterno was part of the problem at State College.

  122. madeinhawaii November 10, 2011 6:04 pm

Pennsylvania … wonder how much house 1.1 million will get you there? eh? relatively speaking…

  123. NorthShoreFan November 10, 2011 6:39 pm

Aloha All…haven’t posted but was lurking and trying to keep up with things.

Have to get things off my mind.

The sequence of events as I understand it are…

1 Sandusky caught abusing a 10 year old.

2 McCreary walks in on the event and witnesses the CRIME.

3 McCreary reports ti hid father who tells him to inform JoPa.

4 JoPa informs the university persident.

    5 NOTHING HAPPENS

6 Issue arises againg in 2000

    7 Campus police is invilved.

    8 Regular police gets involved.

9 Attoney General tries for an indictment. (haven’t read the transcripts yet)

    10 NO INDICTMENT

    11 University does nothing furher

    12 Police does nothing further

13 Attorney General does nothing further

14 In the meanwhile Sandusky sets up a charitable organization that is supposed to help kids.

15 I heard there are charges in the neighborhood of 40 or so pending against Sandusky.

16 University fires JoPa and the president.

17 JoPa hires himself a criminal defense attorney.

IMHO..it all started with McCreary. When you see a crime being committed do you need to call your daddy? If police was called, there would have been resolution to this back in 1998 when it all started.

Why do we have firings of the coach and the university president only? McCreary will be coaching up in the booth this Saturday because of concerns for his safety? What about all those kids who are the victims? Not concerned about them when they all decided not to do anything.

The president, Board of trustees, coaches, police, attorney general have all been “enablers” to have allowed this to go on over the years.

We ahve yet to determine how many kids have been abused at the univeristy and at the charitable organization that this pervert had access to.

Kev-1 (#286, prior blog) and Kevin is spot on with their comments.

There needs to be accountability and seems everyone who may have been able to stop this atrocity is pointing to others and not taking responisbility.

Is this the culture at this university, community, state? The evidence is still being collected and they probably will have a lot to check out since this started from 1998. To see the kids rioting and calling the man a “legend” makes my stomach turn.

As one post comments, “he is just a man” as we are all. When it gets to the point where we are not subject to the laws of the land then we have failed miserably as a society.

Wall Street CEO’s, “Banks to big to fail”, football coaches/programs, politicians to big to prosecute are becoming the norm in the newd lately and I don’t know about you but it scares me.

The money does the talking, everything else…”take a hike”

A presidential candidate can’t remember the departments he wants to get rid of, then makes jokes about his brain fart. The news report about it says he has $17 mil he cna use to correct the screwup and other gaffs he’s pulled off. Gimme a break! Money talks in this society.

Please excuse the rant…will retreat back under the bridge now..mahalo

Aloha UH Warrior fans and to the Tsaikos–

I first want to thank you for all of the best wishes for my beautiful Mother’s speedy recovery. For 88 years young she is doing incredible after shattering her ankle. She tripped this past Monday and was rushed to Hilo Medical Center. They have been remarkable! Lucky you live Hilo.

My husband Pepe and I would also like to thank you all for the very kind words for the loss of my Mother in Law. My Mother in Law passed away at 9:01 Hawaii time on Tuesday evening. She was 99 years old. It was such an honor to have her live with us this past year. She was living on her own until the age of 98. She was a best friend to me. Not just a mother in law. She was an incredible woman! A true inspiration to so women. She loved the Indianapolis Colts. She loved her Indiana University football and basketball teams. And she learned to love the UH Warriors since her sweet, sweet Calen #50 is now on the team. Calen is doing well and loved his hanai Granny very much. She set the bar for Calen to believe in himself to be the BEST both on and off the field. She told him one day she would be watching him from heaven on the field. It has been a very tough week for us.

Since I will be here now until January since family is always more important than money I want to invite the Hilo Tsaikos for lunch at the Hilo Yacht Club when things settle down in a week or so. PapaJoe I think I met your nephew Jeff Gomes today when I went to purchase the Urn today. He mentioned to me you were a Tsaiko. So can the Hilo fans let me know what day is best for everyone? To the Honolulu fans we will be sending to Don Weir some door prizes for your Christmas party.

Mahalo from the entire ohana for the kind words and words of strength you have uplifted all of us with in this most sad time for our family. We are humbled by the kindness you have sent our way. May Adonai (the Lord) bless you all and keep you all safe. We will be having a celebration of my Mother in Laws life in Honolulu, Los Angeles, Louisville, Indianapolis and NYC next year after the recovery of my Mom. Please keep Calen in your prayers as well. He loved his Granny very much. He was very sad when we had to make the call to him. Like in the movie the Lion King…we are just a part of the circle of life. She will be watching him on the Big 3D plasma with God.

    Mahalo Ke Akua.

These leaders including Paterno were part of the old Penn State establishment bent on protecting their own. They stonewalled questions from the press for two years concerning this matter. “Two Years” for pete’s sake. Paterno’s excuse that he thought everything was taken care of is weak. Was he so busy that he didn’t notice the guy was still around? That culture thank goodness does not exist here. If questions like those were raised by ST, the Tsaiko’s would have charged JD’s office with Kevin leading the way with wooden bat in one hand and machete in the other.

  135. Old Diver November 10, 2011 8:38 pm

One can only imagine what Kevin would do with the bat and machete.

how does arnold get what he gets and shoji get what he gets? i read that w vb makes more money per $ spent than any other sport…..arnold had one good year (via a schedule set up by nash to guarantee a 19-20 win season) and a “post-season” (3rd ranked “post season” tourney?). seriously, punahou mafia?

I’m pretty sure that spot belongs to football. Also women’s volleyball has a limited upside in revenues. Football and men’s basketball have much higher upsides.

  143. papajoe2 November 10, 2011 10:33 pm

Poly Mom #132, I hope your family is doing OK considering the passing of you mother-in-law and your mom’s ankle. I don’t think that Jeff is my nephew but you never know. Maybe he meant “psyco” instead of Tsaiko.LOL. Or he could be good looking therefore the confusion.

  144. tommui November 10, 2011 10:34 pm

I don’t know how much the “Punahou” bunch is putting up as part of the salary for Coach Gib, but assume that it would be about the same percentage that JJ allegedly got, essentially Coach Gib is getting the about the same last year’s salary with maybe a 10% increase and the rest is being put up by the Punahou bunch, so what’s the problem?

If the boosters for women’s volleyball want to supplement Coach Shoji’s salary, I would be in favor of it.
