Ask away

It’s Monday, which means we’re taking your questions on UH football.

Saturday’s game? The upcoming road trip? Live streaming?

Maybe we’ll have the answers, maybe we won’t.

But we’ll do our best. Some of the answers will be posted in Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Warrior Beat.

COMMENTS

  1. Down with... September 12, 2016 7:29 am

Rolo Can you please bring back Gaylord for all Home Games….Wooot….Woooot. It really brought back some good memories of the past and UH football in general. Good feelings!

If not, and he’s not up to it, maybe he can pass the torch on to another….

  2. Down with... September 12, 2016 7:34 am

Sorry ***HE really brought back some good memories… not it***

  3. Da Punchbowl Kid September 12, 2016 7:37 am

Congrats to the Warriors for that first win of the Rolo era.

What is the status of Melvin Davis? Will he redshirt? Is he injured?

  4. Maddog50 September 12, 2016 7:39 am

When will the streaming issue be resolved-this is not Coachs issue. I was told a solution was being worked on to allow mainland audience to view. Had to do with blocking it from streaming back to state. I was able to pay a few years ago and am willing to do so-

  5. UH Fan for Life September 12, 2016 7:39 am

Congrats to Coach Rolo on his first D1 win. Two questions:

    1) did we have any serious injuries that will hold back players in the rotation from traveling to Arizona?

    2) any changes to the depth charts based on game performances?

    Go warriors!

  6. Da Punchbowl Kid September 12, 2016 7:54 am

The live streaming issue for the mainland Warrior Nation viewers needs to be fixed ASAP. This will hurt recruiting and our fan base. What is being done about this situation? I pray its not a done deal for this season.

  7. Shoko September 12, 2016 7:55 am

When the Warriors travel to Mackay Stadium next year, will Rolo leave behind some of that chewy caramel in sweet milk chocolate candy on Chris Ault field after the game?

I think it would be quite fitting since Ault is known to have a sweet tooth.

  8. Shoko September 12, 2016 8:00 am

Thankfully, the Arizona game will be on the PAC12 Network.

  9. Warrior Fan September 12, 2016 8:22 am

Congrats on getting that much needed victory!

Question, who do you think performed well in this past Saturday’s game?

2nd Question, it seems that since we went back to being the “Rainbow” Warriors, we’ve hadn’t had much success. Do you think you will go back to us being called the Warriors and drop the Rainbow?

3rd Question. What adjustments will be needed on defense to help us pull the upset against UA?

  10. Jeezy33 September 12, 2016 8:36 am

    2 questions:
What happened to Daniel Lewis? Injured?
Does Hawaii work on tackling enough during the week? We used to be a hard hitting team 5+ years ago.

  11. Ohana Hawaii September 12, 2016 8:45 am

I have a great question to ask Stephen? . Why do the mainland news reporters and also the peoples don’t the University of Hawaii football program or other sports program!. They’re been talking really nasty about them? Is that your job to do that? I know that it’s not true

  12. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 12, 2016 8:57 am

    What happened to Devan Stubblefield?

It seems like he’s the A. Barker of yesteryear.

  13. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 12, 2016 9:01 am

And let me add this, the single best thing on Saturday night was by far, BY FAR, the return of Gaylord.

Hope to see him again some time.

  14. G-funk September 12, 2016 9:13 am

What happened to Daniel Lewis? Packer does not have enough speed to keep up with opposing wideouts and running backs, not to mention his tacking skills are suspect.

What happened to Gifford? I heard he was ejected, for what? When?

Our special teams kick return and kick coverage has been really bad. I see guys purposefully wiffing on blocks to block the next level, but can’t we at least have our guys give the opponent whizzing by a forearm shiver?? A quick jab to the side of the shoulder pad to a sprinting opponent could very well knock then over if not throw them off course. And we either need more speed on our coverage, toughness, and depth perception are also lacking. Maybe just line-drive kick it out of the endzone is safer? I haven’t even mentioned the punt return.. Our guys just don’t seem to have that gung ho mentality that needs to be had on special teams. What do some of these guys do? Play maybe a half dozen downs all game? You’d think they could give it 120%? I know I would!

  15. haka September 12, 2016 9:16 am

Great ugly win this week!! Losing is bad enough, but losing ugly is the worst! A win is a win. No one said it would be easy…or beautiful. Congrats Warriors!!!

    Make popoki poke!
    Beat da ‘Cats!

  16. Buffoman September 12, 2016 9:21 am

I’ve beaten this dying or now dead horse since the first game. Tackling is almost a lost art on this team. I was shocked at how bad we look even at this point, three games into the season.

If this trend continues we’ll have to score and score at lot more going forward to stay in games as we’re giving away a lot by by poor technique. Given what was said about our qb and the offense, things could be a challenge.

    Hope that improves.

  17. Bryson September 12, 2016 9:43 am

Being that RB is the strength of our offense I can understand the heavy run,are there plans to adjust that to keep defenses guessing?

  18. (Jesse)James September 12, 2016 9:48 am

    Good morning Tsaikos….

While a win is a win…this one definitely was not pretty….lots to improve but I think the mistakes are fixable. The players just have to want it.

The jury is still out on this (for me at least)…but who are the leaders on the team??? I still don’t see that fire in the guys as far as a leader goes…like back in the days of David Maeva, Mike Tressler, etc

  19. Derek September 12, 2016 9:49 am

Coach, what are top 3 things do you look for in a winning QB?

  20. azwarrior22 September 12, 2016 9:52 am

When is the future for our QB? IW is servicable but doesn’t scare defenses and not going to win us many games.

  21. PONO September 12, 2016 9:54 am

    Coach,
Which freshman do you plan on redshirting this year since we are 25% through our schedule?

  22. H-Man September 12, 2016 9:57 am

Question. Is Isaiah Bernard going to red-shirt?
Question. What kind of defensive alignment was that in the last series against the Skyhawks?
Comments. Congratulations to the Warriors for the win. I really enjoyed the game. Lots of positives in spite of the many miscues. Looking for a good performance against the Arizona Wildcats. Go Warriors !!!

  23. 808_Ballin September 12, 2016 10:08 am

Are there any plans for renovations or football facility upgrades in the near future??? Go Bows!!

  24. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 12, 2016 10:14 am

When you contemplate a personnel change at QB, what are some specific things you are looking at to help you come to a decision?

  25. Boolakanaka September 12, 2016 10:24 am

How do you address tackling problems three games into the season? Tackling for the most past is a technique and want equation…..so, how do you fundamentally address it at this point?

  26. Petey September 12, 2016 10:41 am

    Congratz on the win!

-Will we see more creativity in the offense? Some misdirection plays using Ursua or Ewaliko. Btw loved the shovel pass.
-I’ve been hearing a lot about Kala Timoteo. Will he get to see some playing time?
-QB play needs to improve in order for us to get to the next level. Do you think letting brown or Zawalen take some snaps bolds better for the future?

  27. H-Man September 12, 2016 11:10 am

IMO, barring injury, Ikaika is the starting QB for the season. Coaching staff’s only option at this stage is to continue tweaking the offense as the season progresses. We can only hope for the best.

  28. al September 12, 2016 11:23 am

Does anyone know what it will take for DPK to get his okole down to the Aloha Stadium?

  29. warriorfan September 12, 2016 11:28 am

Stephen please find out what is going on with the streaming, I live on the mainland and its killing me not to be able to watch and forced to listen to Bobby Curran. Are they working on a solution? It seems to be this would hurt in recruiting and for those parents of the players who cant make the games because they cant watch their sons….

Congrats Coach on your first win…

Same question as #12, what happened to Stubblefield?

Is IW’s inconsistent play the reason we are not seeing more of the typical run-n-shoot offense?

Comment: The last 4 years showed that we dont have the talent to lineup and run it down people’s throats, if IW cant get the job done in the run-n-shoot, lets find the the best option and use this year to get him some quality prep time for next year..Good luck this week.

  30. Ekim September 12, 2016 11:31 am

Maybe the issue is not tackling but the speed of our players.

  31. 808 September 12, 2016 11:40 am

Is 3 games enough to make an informed decision on a possible QB change?

Are you staying with IW for the Arizona game?

Are you open to having a platoon system with the QB position?

  32. cocobean September 12, 2016 11:54 am

Any plans to adjust the schemes for the defensive front 7? To my untrained eyes I thought the tackles played okay but for the most part our DEs were handled quite easily on running plays. It was painful to watch their RT pancake one of our ends on T-Martin’s 30 yard td pass in the 2nd quarter.

  33. Ohana Hawaii September 12, 2016 12:04 pm

Hawaii and Arizona game is not the broad yet. Because they were Arizona 33 point favorite over Hawaii. It will go down soon! But it will be a great home game for some Hawaii born players. Like their Quarterbacks! Once play at St Louis back of Marcus Mariota!.

  34. Maddog50 September 12, 2016 12:04 pm

Any plans to get Chung some touches? Right or wrong we are sitting on some offensive plays/schemes in preparation for conference-

  35. Tod September 12, 2016 12:11 pm

Will we ever see the green helmets this year?

  36. J-Dog September 12, 2016 12:15 pm

    1. Is Ewaliko is some kind of “dog house”? Rolo was seen on TV chewing him out after a pretty decent kickoff return. From then, Ewaliko was seen immediately running up field to block on ensuing kickoff returns giving way to Dejuan Butler to field the return. Also, Ewaliko has yet to see the field in some jet sweep or streak route.

    2. Are we really sticking with white helmets?? The deep warrior green helmets were mentioned on a uni blog as being one of the iconic helmet colors in college football.

  37. J-Dog September 12, 2016 12:15 pm

I should mention that Rolo chewed Ewaliko out on multiple occassions on Saturday.

  38. Tod September 12, 2016 12:17 pm

Will Lakalaka get more touches? He seems deserving.

  39. SteveM September 12, 2016 12:18 pm

    RE: #15
Buffoman — I recall commenting to my partner at the game that maybe we need to bring back (Jerry Glanville’s) big bag. 😐

  40. Former UH Athlete September 12, 2016 12:34 pm

FYI… there are 4 Board of Regent spots available and taking apps.

There’s your chance to try an upgrade UH Athletic facilities… however, don’t get too excited because people with any financial sense are automatically rejected and political savvy is the most desirable attribute.

On a serious note, there’s like half a billion dollars in deferred maintenance on upper campus that needs to be done that’s going to take precedence (for good and bad reasons) over upgrading athletic facilities.

  41. bowwar September 12, 2016 12:46 pm

    Congratulations on the ugly win…
Are they opening up the Quarterback selection again? I think IW has had his “chance” and perhaps, someone else should be given the opportunity to run the offense. Also, do they have someone else available for the WR position aside from Ammon Barker? I think we’re not getting the production needed from that side and they should have someone waiting in the wings. Barker dropped a very catchable pass in his midsection and doesn’t seem to be able to get separation on passes.

  42. Former UH Athlete September 12, 2016 12:47 pm

Tough game this week at Arizona. Arizona has not looked very good vs BYU (loss) and Grambling St (win). Starting QB Anu Solomon has been banged up (I believe he missed the Grambling game).

Is a UH (+24.5) point spread fair?

Will UH slow the tempo and pound the rock with DSJ/PH/SL?

  43. jim white September 12, 2016 12:52 pm

good memories-I moved to fl 20 yrs ago but Gaylord stayed with me -aloha

  44. clyde September 12, 2016 1:06 pm

Question: With 2 minutes to play, trailing 63-3 and 4th-and-13 at the Michigan 36, you elected to punt. With nearly a full fourth quarter to play, leading Tennessee-Martin 28-24 and a 4th-and-1 at your 29, you elected to go for it. Can you explain the reasoning behind both decisions, and which one is more indicative of your personality?

  45. (Jesse)James September 12, 2016 1:30 pm

    #27…Al…..MWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

    Signed….False Pordagee

  46. Former UH Athlete September 12, 2016 2:00 pm

    40. nice one

  47. Down with... September 12, 2016 2:04 pm

I like that question also #40….

  48. NotNasti September 12, 2016 2:12 pm

    Petey,
Timoteo has been playing on special teams from the first game. He went in for Barker on offense for a few series, but was not targeted by Woolsey.

  49. Boya_jr September 12, 2016 2:16 pm

My question is mainland/outside hawaii streaming. This is the biggest issue in my mind. I could not see the missed tackles via the radio.

    Something needs to be done!!!

  50. Markazulu September 12, 2016 2:18 pm

Is there a freshmen thats been impressing you?

  51. Buffoman September 12, 2016 2:25 pm

Are there stats we can look at where we could see who is IW’ s most targeted receiver. I have not seen the tight ends used much or Usura. It’s a guess but I’d say it’s Collie and Kemp. Nothing wrong with that if others are not great route runners. Well if so, it is a problem. But if it shows a predictable pattern could it be another issue?

  52. cocobean September 12, 2016 2:35 pm

I didn’t see too much emotion or passion from the defense until late in the 4th quarter. Is it too much to expect the defense to play with that much emotion from start to finish?
In the old days it was fun to watch 11 angry men playing hard hitting defense with an attitude. After watching UH back then a wise old philosopher came up with the old saw – “It not the size of the dog in the flight but the size of the fight in the dog.” JK, of course. But I really believe the defense needs a little more fight.

  53. Down with... September 12, 2016 2:51 pm

#33- Ewaliko probably got yelled at for carrying the ball over his shoulder again on a kick return. The same way he got it forced into a fumble at (Michigan?/Cal?). He did on a kick off and after that he never fielded a kickoff. DB did the rest of game.

  54. Kris September 12, 2016 2:58 pm

Why did Coach Rolovich abandon the “original” Run N Shoot for the current version? The team had so much success running it when he was offensive coordinator.

  55. z September 12, 2016 3:01 pm

Coach when do you make the determination that player one is not working out and you decide to go to player two? All positions.

  56. Buffoman September 12, 2016 3:02 pm

#48 I noticed that too. Also see that on special teams. Like you, wondering if tackling techniques are not the issue, but lack of “that bite” has folks not being at their best. I used to worry that our guys wrapping up and almost pile driving folks into the turf would draw flags. Don’t see much of “that bite”.

  57. warriorsanddolphins September 12, 2016 3:17 pm

I know we have 3 good runningbacks this year. Are we redshirting Melvin Davis and Freddie Holly?

  58. AllG September 12, 2016 3:24 pm

    1. Any chance we will see Aaron Zwhalen this week? He was in the QB competition and has yet to be given fair shot in a game.

    2. Is Stubblefield hurt? Down on the depth cart?

    3. What can be done to improve the poor tackling? Seems our players and not wrapping all the way to the ground and playing like it is a scrimmage against their own team not trying to get the other team hurt. Will tackling drills be a emphasis in practice?

  59. AllG September 12, 2016 3:35 pm

What do you see if Ikaika Woosley that leads you to believe he should be our starting QB? From what I’ve seen through out his career he is not accurate (50% passer), stares down primary receiver, makes poor decisions, and over throws receivers in traffic leading to a lot of interceptions. Doesn’t seem to have that passion and enthusiasm that a lot of the great QBs have.

  60. Warbow September 12, 2016 3:44 pm

I been reading this blog for quite some time, it’s obvious some of you don’t know what D-1 talent is. Case in point Ewaliko, Zeno Choi, Stubblefield and Damien Packer are not D-1 talent but you guys continue to ask why they don’t play more.

  61. z September 12, 2016 3:51 pm

Coach why does this win feel like a loss?

  62. 3-Prong September 12, 2016 4:05 pm

I look in the Win/Loss Column and all I see is exactly what I thought I would see after 3 games.

Go get em boys. Go Bows!

Did I almost hear the return of the Let’s Go Bows cheer down the stretch Saturday Night? It’s Coming. I feel it!!!!

  63. kalua pig September 12, 2016 4:16 pm

rolo, everybody like know, how much you weigh cuz?

  64. bogeywarrior September 12, 2016 4:31 pm

Any chance Santiago starts ahead of Packer at safety? Kid looks real good and has a nose for the ball.

  65. al September 12, 2016 4:54 pm

AIIG…I believe that Woolsey has the passion and enthusiasm. Probably as much as any.

His primary downfall is that he cannot see the field like the great ones. It is a very tough task to barely be able to peer above the 6’4″ lineman and be able to “see” the play develope in a couple of seconds.

    His indecisiveness reveals that much.

  66. Warbow September 12, 2016 5:32 pm

Why did you bring in all those back-up QBs when it was obvious we needed D-linemen? Is AZ going to get a chance to win the QB job in a game situation?

  67. kapakahi September 12, 2016 5:33 pm

    – What’ s the status of WR Davasyia Hagger (since he didn’t seem to get any reps this past game)?
    – Is the plan to redshirt true soph OG Eperone Moananu this season?

  68. Ipu Man September 12, 2016 5:46 pm

Will we see the rainbow stripe
    uniform and helmet again?
    Go Bows!
    🙂

  69. Tempmanoa September 12, 2016 5:57 pm

Al #61– Woolsey is taller than Dru Brown who is only 6’0″. If you go by height it needs to be one of the taller guys– Beau Reilly 6’6″, or Brownholz 6’4″, McDonald 6’4″, or Zwhalen 6’3″.

  70. Carl September 12, 2016 6:09 pm

Given the lack of crowd energy for most of the game, except when Gaylord fired up the crowd, don’t you think that a mascot could really be beneficial to the team and experience at Aloha Stadium? Have you approached Villi about returning as mascot, or do you think there’s a better option?

  71. oldtimer808 September 12, 2016 6:20 pm

This is a question for Ohana Hawaii. Why did you change your screen name because we can recognize you by your incoherent grammar.

  72. 808warriorfan September 12, 2016 6:29 pm

    Not a question but a request …

Please bring back GAYLORD … he can fire up a crowd …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  73. hilosupaman September 12, 2016 7:21 pm

Coach Rolo Congrats again on your first W. I really love the message about changing the attitude. Expect to win! I think about it this way, if you were in MMA/Boxing you wouldn’t step in thinking maybe I get chance. No way, that would get your Okole kicked! Same attitude for the team.

My question: UA contract is almost over, any word on who we might go with next?

I really miss the old jerseys, back when you were QB!

  74. Luki September 12, 2016 7:32 pm

This may have been asked already, didn’t read through all the questions but:

Is there some D-Lineman UH is holding back on that could get a look this season? D-Line looks winded and handled on Saturday from a team considered a tier lower, lack of depth…

  75. burro sabio September 12, 2016 7:37 pm

Coach Rolo, how are you able to politely answer questions from people who think they know more about coaching than you do?

  76. A-House September 12, 2016 7:39 pm

    Coach:

what is the reason for not attacking the “edges” with running plays?

I’m tired of seeing the “dive up the middle”.

  77. A-House September 12, 2016 7:52 pm

    Coach:

if you are content to keep Woosley as your starting QB all season – are you prepared to start 2017 with an untested QB? now is more important than the “future”?

Not having a stream reflects poorly on Oceanic an UH, but mostly Oceanic. We are now the only FBS program without any kind of live stream for home games. Most FCS schools even have live feeds available. There are also several DII, DIII, NAIA, JUCO, and even high school programs that offer live streaming of football home games. It makes absolutely no sense from a technological or a business standpoint for Oceanic to refuse to offer some kind of streaming service, whether it is free or through PPV.

Anyway, here’s a uniform question: Coach Rolo, What do you think about taking the “H” logo off the right side of the helmet and replacing it with the islands? You would still have the “H” logo on the left side of the helmet.

  81. 808 September 12, 2016 8:52 pm

    #67, Lol.

His 95% to 5% run to pass prediction ratio regarding our OC about future play calling posted several days ago was quite amusing.

  82. hitmanhart September 12, 2016 9:02 pm

coach rolo why only this week the shovel pass ? and maybe a face shield for your qb ? been locking on who he going too when he has time !!

  83. 808 September 12, 2016 9:57 pm

74, After reading the article on QB play, I can see that this coaching staff is not afraid to make a QB change. Maybe DB is not ready yet.

I hope IW takes advantage of his many chances and his long leash. This staff seems to not be stuck on one mind set. This is good. We just hope DB or AZ learns really fast and hopefully take over at QB somtime this season. That would provide hope for all and maybe a win or two.

We have been waiting for IW to have a breakout year. It hasn’t happened yet. The 50% completion rate is still a glaring number.

    Thanks for the article.

  84. Jayboy September 12, 2016 10:10 pm

When are we going to start seeing a more balanced offense Rolo- very little use of Screens, Reverses, Draws, .swing passes to backs ……how about more multiple formations and use of dual backs…..we have so much talent in the backfield that is not being used ,,,,,,,,,,and can we get a better effort on special teams especially on the returns- seems like there is no plans for returns as the blocking has been very non- aggressive. The key to good coaching is putting players in the best position of success…..I still think the coaching staff has a way to go though I believe the talent is there to do so. …just a little surprised coaching staff is not executing better.

  85. Razor Nick September 13, 2016 3:30 am

Coach: love the way the team is progressing. I get it. Building a winning program the right way is job one. But, my question concerns issues outside of coaching that impede long-term success. What support can you call into play to manage the non-coaching issues that affect the support at Aloha Stadium (attendance), and the digital extension of the brand (online streaming)? Who’s on deck to make sure going to the stadium is not a measured choice between experiencing real college football against traffic hassles, bias against responsible beer enthusiasts, and poor concourse concessions?

  86. Maddog50 September 13, 2016 4:44 am

Wish that the game was downloaded to you tube for us unable to watch!

  87. Slugger September 13, 2016 5:52 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Is anyone bringing ti leaves to the AZ game?

  88. wargreen808 September 13, 2016 5:58 am

    Coach Rolo,

Is there any chance that we could see Zwahlen take some snaps in the near future. wasn’t he supposed to be really good?? He was in the elite 11 out of high school.

Also , who really calls the plays and why haven’t we seen many different play calls, will we spice it up soon to keep opponents guessing and give us a better shot at victory?

  89. whitey September 13, 2016 6:08 am

Reading the Tsaikos posts somehow the words “best player for the position during the game” is being shadowed by the dark word favoritism.

  90. July Jones September 13, 2016 8:03 am

Rolo. When are we going to see the Black helmets in the mix? The white helmets are a good change of pace but the Black helmets to me symbolize the “Pride Rock”.
Was sort of hoping to see the All Black at home

  91. al September 13, 2016 8:09 am

    72…
    1) the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
    2) don’t fix what ain’t broke, we have been very effective running the ball.
    3) a fly sweep requires one who can fly.

    Great Morning All!

    Q for Rolo:

Watching in The Big House it was evident that UofM fielded an impressive number of athletes who are destined to be making a living playing football…and many of them were young’uns on ST. How long do you envision it will be before UH is in a position to be placing significant numbers on NFL rosters?

    al,

    I would add:

    – running wide presumes your guy can get there before their guy

  94. Akamai Okole September 13, 2016 8:20 am

    …which leads to another thing.

Tackling is best done with the feet. Cannot hit and drive when the feet are a “step behind.”

Once the defenders can get in position, whether by scheme or athleticism, the tackling improves (less “arm-tackling”)

  95. Akamai Okole September 13, 2016 8:21 am

…also, and maybe especially, applies to open field tackling like on punt coverage!

    87. Agreed, thus my comment about “requires one who can fly.”

    On another note,
I haven’t been to Thelma’s in quite awhile.

Did I mention that I am off today? (mostly)

  99. Aaron September 13, 2016 9:18 am

Geeze, do you guys have any question other than some version of “why haven’t you benched Ikaika Woolsey?” Same stuff from the same people every day.

  100. al September 13, 2016 9:37 am

Ahhh. Today is a busy day.

  101. Akamai Okole September 13, 2016 9:43 am

NP…perhaps a “recon mission” is in order.

    I will send a report. 😆

Good one #55…enquiring minds want to know why you continue to have a long leash on IW when his performance doesn’t warrant it. The future is now…make a QB change to inspire the fan base and the team.
