Craig Sutzmann, a former UH receiver and graduate assistant coach, said he has accepted a position with the Memphis football program.He will learn his specific role when he reports tomorrow morning.
Stutzmann received the offer through Memphis offensive coordinator Eric Price, son of UTEP coach Mike Price. Eric Price was an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Price and Stutzmann got to know each other better when both were speakers at Jason Gesser’s football clinic last year. Gesser and Stutzmann were Saint Louis School teammates.
Most recently, Stutzmann was an assistant coach at Portland State.

Not only has UH closed its men’s basketball practices this week, it has limited interview periods. The coaching staff and players were available for interviews yesterday, and they will be available after tonight’s game, but tomorrow will be a dead period.
Sure, the Rainbows face a crucial must-play-well period. But I’m sure there could be a compromise that would allow the players to focus on games while maintaining an open dialogue with the public.

Tickets sales are going well for Saturday’s volleyball match on Maui.
The 500 tickets sent to Maui have been sold. In addition, another 1,000 tickets were purchased through the UH Box Office.
The seating chart shows that War Memorial Gym can hold up to 2,996 fans, although a Maui County Web site lists the seating capacity at 2,500. UH is capping sales at 2,500, although some have questioned whether the gym can comfortably fit that many. In any scenario, the Warriors should have loud support.

Today I learned that the turnstile count at SSC events only includes those entering with tickets, which are scanned. In the past, especially at Aloha Stadium, everybody counted — the band, the national anthem singer, the youth soccer team working the garlic fries stand, the dorks on press row. All of them enter through the pass gate.

From what I’ve been told, only “eligible” players will be allowed to go to Kauai.
I’m not fully certain, but I think that would mean players who have to sit out after transferring would not be included on the travel roster to Kauai.

I know a lot of bloggers can automatically set the release time of their blogs (sometimes days in advance), but I like to go live. But because the clock is off, sometimes I’ll post at 12:10 a.m. and it will show up as 11:58 the previous night. So I’ll have to reset the post time.

I found that Dustin Blount would make a pretty good defensive back. He’s very aggressive.
No forget to watch PBS Hawaii’s special on Pidgin tonite. As we all know, pidgin is a reflection of Hawaii — no matter what side of the aisle you sit on. Although I have succumbed to the language of the dominant culture, I still consider Big Island Ka’u Pidgin to be my native tongue….and the language of my soul.

Really? What more do we need to know about the men’s basketball team? The last place they want to be in is in the public’s eye right now and people asking them “why are are you struggling” “how can you turn it around” “wonder if we can sense their intensity level at practice” Please, they are in last place, the team is stressed, is in a bit of crisis and they have school work to worry about. lately they have not been media darlings. The coach know’s this, is worried and is doing the right thing, he has the right to close practices, grant him that right. He should have done this from week 1. I say leave them alone, let them figure it out. even if players don’t agree with the coach or have a dislike for his coaching philosophy, athletes tend to respond when a coach lays down the law in an authoritarian manner. – the coachable ones anyway – but they do respond.
Hey, if it looks like their struggling, smells like their struggling, plays like their struggling, guess what? What’s more to ask? We all know where this is heading.. limited interviews is plenty. other sports need covering. give em time, let them respond to the coach, not the public and they’ll give you a story..
It’s bad enough in here that when theres controversy or when things go south posters can post with impunity. most of us have no creditability to damage, but you know the coaches are shaking their heads thinking somehow we need to shut the doors.
having said that basketball gets a pass as being the red headed step child. Football on the other hand… =)

Awesome game last night, sans BSU’s near comeback, but I guess that makes it better and all the more sweeter.
Big “UPS” to “Grandma D” (Dita) for giving us all she had at her time at UH. As a fan and as a resident of Hawaii, the stories of people that are from outside Hawaii, in this case, outside the US, and acclimating to the lifestyle and the “Aloha” we have to offer is always a BIG plus and very satisfying for us as well as the student athlete.
In that, it was very rewarding for Wahine fans to see her get leave the Stan Sheriff Center away as a winner on and off the court.
I think we’re pretty much a LOCK for the WAC tourney, UNLESS SJSU can beat Fresno State at Fresno and NMSU at Las Cruces… Yeah… no way in hell!!!

So apparently history is AGAINST Na Wahine softball in this year’s Cathedral City Classic with OSU, AZ, and UC Davis dominating the Rainbows in their current respective all times series.

Agree with Kazz about the wbb game last night. Tremenduous exclamation point ending for the last home game in Coach Dana’s first season. And what a sharp contrast to the way Coach Nash’s team has been playing.
The first half in particular showed everybody contributing, unselfish play with the assist level at half above the game average for the season, strong fundamental play by each player when they received the ball and made a ball fake to set up their opponent, and main thing — ohana spirit. I think Hawaii fans will support our teams if they play like that, win or lose. That is who we are here — work hard, stay humble, play smart, look for the new thing that works, keep trying to get better.
I see great things for the Wahine as they go forward to the tournament and the next season.
And back to lurking. Esme woosh!

on travel to Kauai – I would not be a popular coach as I would leave behind all who are injured and cannot practice and those who are not eligible to pay in 2010 – that’s the break of the cycle and consequence if some chooses the mainland first (if offered by UH).
also, do not understand why teams brings all the “llaking wounded” on trips – just increases the expenses ( air, hotel, fuud)!
Pidgin English – had a prof at UH who said that if Hawaii had millions of residents, pidgen would be considered a “dialic” of standard American speech – he also said, “never be ashamed” of speaking pidgen – it’s knowing when to use it that makes the difference.
ESPN Q&A with Karl Benson. I do *not* like that when he’s asked about BSU leaving the WAC to go to the MWC, Benson talks about how it is natural for “upward mobility”. Does that imply that *Benson* thinks that BSU would upgrade itself by going to the MWC?
Benson said that BSU has been open and honest about their long-term desires…no surprise since they basically have a press conference once a year where BSU’s President says that they want to go to the MWC.
This part I agree with–the bottom and middle of the WAC needs to upgrade their programs to earn the WAC some respect.

Note that Benson is saying that MWC has separated itself from the WAC…so he just told ESPN that the MWCis above the WAC right now. Even if he thought that, he shouldn’t say that to ESPN…
Part of the job of a conference commissioner is to boost the conference they represent and spread good PR. By clearly telling ESPN that the MWC is above the WAC and that BSU wanting to go to the MWC is natural “upward mobility”, Benson is a failure at being a homer for the WAC.

I think the problem is when some assume they know all there is to know about the players.

Garret if things look bad for we WAC members and the bosses (Presidents of the institutions) sit by and idly watch their employee (Benson) degrade what he should be uplifting, then we (all WAC schools) only have ourselves to blame for keeping the employeee employed.
Seems like everyone with the exception of BSU remains asleep at the wheel and may only be awaken or hopefully revived AFTER the crash…again.

DT Kaniela Tuipulotu, Hawaii (from Arizona): He started seven games in 2008 but slid down the depth chart — injuries were an issue — and opted to transfer to his home state.
As a former old player to Hawaii from the “GOLDEN ERA” of the 70’s and 80’s all I can say until Hawaii Coaches and Administrators allow former mainland players MORE involvement and acknowledgement of their time to their specific sport then what you see in Hawaii athletics will continue of poor play, losing records and mediocrity players.
This poor treatment is pathetic as I have connected to a lot of former athletes here on the mainland and their ONE main complaint is that Hawaii don’t care about their lives after years of sweating on the grid iron or bouncing the leather ball or swinging the aluminum bat. No return of phone calls or interest in their lives after the Hawaii lights and fan adulation are gone and forgotten.
With the “ENORMOUS” resources that MANY of us former Bows have with sponsor connections, high school athletes and coaches, business constituents and professional sports franchises Hawaii would be in “seven heaven” if they treat their former players like “SONS” instead of step children.
This continue disconnected line is a disgrace and embarresment as the only thing the University or Hawaii athletics will acknowledge you for if they connect to you is “MONEY” ! as many of my former Bows can do more then that but the no care attitude and no regard of their playing days leave you with NO former players involvement as I have tried with all my heart to help and all I get is a door close in my face and label as a booster / violation “PLEASE” !
The BIG schools former athletes are heavily involve with their former teams program and NEW coaches of that team reach out to them and welcome them with open arms as they are Introduce to the new players as that quality time alone makes them feel self worth and “HONORED” of the new players that will continue the tradition of hard work and outstanding play !
So Tsaiko Nation that is what’s happening from the past players as I live it and see it being far away here in Los Angeles as I give them pictures of their playing days as trying to get it from the Athletic Department or SID is a lost cause !

What to watch:
• The offensive line was a question heading into the 2009 season and will be again in 2010. The Warriors lose four senior starters, including center John Estes. Backups Kainoa LaCount, Matagisila Lefiti, Andrew Faaumu, Bronson Tiwanak, Clayton Laurel and Adrian Thomas will be among those competing for starting roles.
• Bryan Moniz finished the season as the starting quarterback and will go into spring ball as the leading candidate to start in 2010, but Shane Austin, who played some in 2009, will challenge for the starting role this spring. Moniz finished the season completing 57 percent of his passes for 2,396 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
• The Hawaii defense struggled some last year, but should be better with the return of star linebacker Brashton Satele. The Warriors will be looking for a new right tackle as well as a couple of starting linebackers, but the defense, which improved as the season progressed, should be a pleasant surprise in 2010.
Benson needs to the same route as the fumbler. He is the worst commissioner the WAC has ever had, he only looks out for Boise an it show every time he opens his mouth. UH should lead the way to get rid of him.

Based on your post #107, do you know how many support UH teams when they travel to play on the mainland?
Perhaps your concern, as a start point, can be addressed directly to Don Weir who is now the person at NaKoa (football only).
There is also a Letter Winners Club that seeks out former players and I believe that you are well acquainted with this group.
I do not believe that basketball or volleyball or baseball has an active, if any, group dedicated to supporting their sport and trying to secure membership/information or keeping in contact with “former” players.

Just to add a few notes to Kazz and Slugger.
Very happy to see them get the win, but it was ugly especially in the 2nd half where they led by 15 points only to see it disappear at the 9:14 minute mark. Seemingly, very little enthusiam, hustle ( lots of standing around), lousy concentration, lousy ball handling, etc. all contributed to their downward spiral in the last 15 minutes of play.
If Kisha K is the point guard, she holds onto the ball much too long – pehaps this observation is not totally correct as team mates maybe partially to blame for not moving and following the scheme of play.
However, as pointed out by Kazz and Slugger, it’s still a pleasure to watch the Wahine play compared to the men – even when there are times during the game when it can become very frustrating as players throw the ball away, make lousy passes, try behind the back passes in a very crowded/tight area which almost always backfires, stand around while other team goes after rebounds or just stand around while opponent “jumps” for the ball, etc. or knowing that your teammates on the bench are counting down the clock, shot is missed, and UH gets the ball and player holds the ball looking for an open teammate rather than taking a shot to keep the 30-second clock from running out.
Most of the players return for 2010, with an addition or 2, making it much easier for Coach Dana and her staff to prepare for the season. However, she will have 5 seniors and this will allow her greater flexibility in recruiting for 2011.

With the lack of another TRUE guard playing last night (Galdones suspended for 7 days, Ayabe and Kuehu hurt) it really effected us with our offense. Filling in, as we saw, as originally Allie Patterson in that spot, well, that’s what the broadcast claimed when I watched the replay even though during the live game Chawan pointed out that it was Bungaite.
65% of the time, from what I recall, our half court offense wasn’t as “deliberate” (i.e. slow) as it was last night, in fact I have never seen them that “methodical” (i.e. slow) as they were last night. From bringing the ball across the center to setting up a half court offense, last night was a result of the dilapidated bench.
By all accounts, Galdones will return in time for perhaps one road game and then the WAC tournament.
If Galdones was available, our offense would not have been the way it was to start the 2nd half.

Yesterday, the City Council deferred a vote for at least a month on the University of Hawai`i at Manoa ‘s application for a Plan Review Use Permit. It will gp back to the Zoning Committee chaired by Rod Tam for further work; however, I don’t know if Section 8 dealing with the Makai Campus use will be revisited or if the issues deal with another section. Will find out and report back here.

Interesting feature article on Colorado. This would be a huge game for the Warriors to win on the road. The Warriors should have a good chance in this game as long as the altitude and road weariness (see: UNLV last year) problems are overcome.
On one hand Colorado has all of their starting OL back, which could be bad news for the Warriors. But on the bright side, that OL struggled badly last year. Dan Hawkins needs a huge season at Colorado to keep his job, so he cannot afford to lose the game to UH.

Mr. A House Sir If I May ! Former Players do show up from time to time BUT on their own accord or expense. Majority of mainland EX-Bows has family to raise and trying to travel to away games with a LARGE group of love ones is financially difficult. Ex-Bow Joe Frazier has 7 kids and lives in New York but not ONCE has the basketball office offered him an opportunity to see his once playing arena or re-visit Hawaii. Majority of Ex-Bows to their fault did not take advantage of the free education that was given to them and there fore put them self in a disadvantage situation in life as technology and the computer age has taken the way of the world.
Dr. Don Weir is “TREMENDOUS” an advocate to UH Athletics and true leader to Hawaii Warrior Football BUT he can’t speak out to ALL ex-players or have that quality time to really find out the “TRUE” reason why you won’t support Hawaii athletics as it is deeply rooted among many who has issues from their time playing and have yet to come to terms of their irresponsibility not Hawaii or former Coaches being at fault .
The LWC is really gear for Hawaii as I have been a member since 2000 and a board member going into my ninth year. Their primary focus is to help the athletes of today while having fellowship among former Hawaii players in all practicality that lives and work in Hawaii. Receptions are offered BUT majority of mainland athletes don’t see it at a service to them or investing financially with out any services being offered to them or their families.
In conclusion Mr. A House Sir we are where we are with only myself being active among Hawaii former athletes who “GIVES” from the heart to you good folks because you gave me recognition, respect and adulation through good and bad times. Once a Rainbow Warrior always a Rainbow Warrior that comes back ready to HONOR you good folks and Hawaii athletics as more I can offer will be a “VIOLATION” !

my understanding is that it’s the Bulletin that is having financial troubles,their principals have the money but don’t want to continue the trend of pouring money down an endless well, so they put in a bid to buy the advertiser and consolidate both papers. Cut office space, cut personnel, consolidate printing shop, dissolve the union contract by sellling or buying only the assets, we see this happening with the tv guys.
Sure would be burdensome for the host to moderate each and every comment on a heavy day. Talk about not really having a life. Or is it easy with just 10 comments per day?
OPI stake holders are well known names in the community, I may be wrong, but Duane Kurisu is a real estate developer who help start the winter baseball league at Hans L’Orange, Jeffrey Watanabe, long time lawyer with Kobayashi, Watanabe, et al, part of the downtown Hui and old time Democratic party honcho, and Lawrence Johnson, past CEO of BankOH.

Surprising news even though I wondered when the print SB would fade out. Technology and internet has changed the news market and print media is slowly declining…although I appreciate the fact that I don’t need electricity to read newsprint except at night.
My two cents… is losing union contracts and Gannet such a bad thing for ‘Tiser staff? I dunno, but tech seemed … ahhh, nevermind… and ST seemed unhappy about the union contract w/10% pay cut. 🙄 Hope it doesn’t get worse, though.
I expect the The Warrior Beat and Mom’s Like Me would be untouched. Both have established national and international audiences.
But..if Stephen Tsai’s blog should go down, then we’ve had Plan B for a year or two. Buy and put a blog server in ST’s living room. Blog software admin by homey remotely. Blog software was identified last time we took to the “lifeboat”. Cost around $3,000.

Given current advertising and subscription conditions for the newspaper industry, regulators will not be surprised at all if Honolulu ends up with one newspaper. There are a number of cities I’ve read about around the country (at least one with higher population than the entire state of Hawaii) that went from 2 daily newspapers to 1 newspaper to *0* daily newspapers.
I always thought that the Advertiser was in better financial shape and the merger would occur the other way, but we got hints about Gannett’s feelings during the previous union negotiation…

I really don’t think that anyone is buying the Advertiser just to get rid of ST’s blog. I *do* hope that the blog policies that the management or owners of the SB have enforced do not get enforced here…I cannot imagine how the long delays and the forced approval of every comment would work for a blog like ST’s.
BSU asked to send some of their coaches to Austin to meet with Texas’ coaches. Texas wants to learn BSU’s trick play formula, which is understandable. But since BSU is the ones who asked for the meeting, I wonder what they are planning to learn from Texas? The article covers what Texas wants to learn, but doesn’t mention why BSU wanted the meeting.

Absentee ownership of local news media by large corporations who have no interest in the community have damaged and changed the way we get the news. While a poor economy is the reason given for this, the fact is this devouring of local news media by corporate America has been going on for the past thirty years. This used to be illegal and is just plain bad for democracy.

It is not surprising that Gannett would sell The Advertiser. TA is one of only a couple of newspapers that Gannett owns that is losing money. Shareholders don’t want money-losers. According to a friend who works in sales there, home delivery circulation is down to only 72,000 on weekdays and only 85,000 on Sundays. TA’s total circulation went down by nearly 30% YOY. And it appears they haven’t lowered their ad rates to reflect this decrease.
Online news is great as are the blogs but they do NOT pay the salaries of the employees. If you look at the ads on TA site, there are mostly national ads that get very little dollars. Unfortunately, even if ST does a great job with this blog, the ad dollars on this blog does not pay his salary.

When you look back at all the pineapple fields on Oahu that at one time were robust with fruit and workers you are sadden when the owners announce that they are shutting down and going out of business. Lee Cataluna once wrote an article on this. In her article she described an empty pineapple field as a farrow field. She goes on to say that it brought tears to her eyes in watching the fields being burnt to the ground and seeing the ash and embers left behind. A long history of workers, including the first immigrants, toiled on these fields, earned a enough in starting familes and becoming part of the fabric that made up the community she wrote…and then displaced, like a pawns in a chess game. To Lee this struck a cord and it made her sad. To me reading her article made me sad.
With the announcement of SB taking over, and the current HA staff’s job outlooks in limbo, including Stephens, it makes me sad. In fact, it made me think of Lee’s article.
I do hope there’s a fortuitous bounce for all of the HA staff and there’s a happy resolution.

Wow!!! the Advertiser sale really caught me off guard although I am not at all surprised given the state of “real” newspapers everywhere in the United States.
I do have some reports to make about the UH Athletic Department and Aloha Stadium CIP budgets, but I need to do a tad bit more research. Will report on what I find out as soon as possible.
With respect to the Board of Regents Big Island vacancy – click https://www.hawaii.edu/rcac/ for a description of the nominating process. I’m assuming that the will be a major announcement sometime over the weekend here on this blog as to what we will be asked to do.
Once the Regents Candidate Advisory Council selects two to four candidates, the list is then sent to Governor Lingle who will select one candidate.
That name is then sent to the State Senate where a public hearing will be conducted by Sen. Jill Tokuda (my State Senator) who chairs the Committee on Higher Education. The Committee will make a recommendatiion to the entire Senate as to whether the candidate should be confirmed. Usually, there are no problems, but there was one last year. Once the vote is taken, the new Regent will be sworn in & will assume his or her duties within a month.
All of this should take place by the end of April although there is a slight possibility that for a number of other reasons that either the Session will be extended or the Legislature will be called back for a Special Session. It’s way, way too early to do any speculating.
Off to bed – have another diagnostic eyeball procedure at 8:30 am to determine what will happen next. “See you” tomorrow evening.

I hope ST called his boss to explain why he couldn’t make the meeting. Missing a mandatory meeting and putting it in writing is not a good first impression to your new boss.
If the majority of the people on this blog represent a so-called minority then so be it.
If raising kala for the Wahine softball program for their wonderful 2007 run in the Super Regionals is a minority thing… Then the majority can kiss our okoles.
If buying a table at a UH fundraiser is a minority thing then the majority can go to hell.
If raising money for UH football came out of a blog party and that is considered a minority thing then the majority is LAME.
If helping to fix football training equipment is a minority thing then the majority is all talk and cannot walk.
The majority can sit on their hands and complain until the sky actually falls, the minority will just do their thing and let their actions speak louder than words.
The reason for all of this is inspiration and information.
The majority have no damn clue as to the people behind our programs. From what is needed for a mom and pop-like program such as Wahine softball to what everyday people can do to help the football program, Stephen Tsai has brought out the stories and personalities of the coaches and student athletes that the majority wishes they knew about but only the MINORITY apparently cares about.

Actually, I was at UH for volleyball.
They were going to have a meeting whether I was there or not.
And, by the way, Gannett admitted that our paper was profitable.
But as we know, there are two types of profits: Making enough money to cover expenses and making enough money to please shareholders.
If you own stock in Gannett, this is a good short-term move. Gannett can recoup the money it spent on the press. It can make some money from the sale of the Kapiolani Boulevard property. Making any sort of money in this economy isn’t easy. Gannett is accomplishing that.
Guess that makes sense that Gannett is selling instead of buying. But I almost consider the Kapiolani building a landmark. I would expect ST will be have the UH beat and the blog in the end…if he wants it.
ST — maybe it’s time to think about opening that BBQ Sports and Karaoke restaurant. You work the real sports bar portion… 🙂
