All’s well …

A little more than a year ago, linebacker Brashton Satele and offensive tackle Laupepa Letuli were seeking NCAA exemptions that would allow them to play as sixth-year Warriors in 2010.

Letuli’s petition was approved; Satele’s was rejected.

“I was down,” Satele said.

As it turned out, the rejection might have been a blessing. Satele signed a free-agent contract with the New York Jets, started in the fourth preseason game despite not being fully recovered from an injury, and lasted until the final cut.

With the anticipation of a lockout in 2011, which would cancel organized team activities and shorten training camps, NFL teams scrambled to sign free agents. Satele, who was signed to the Jets’ practice squad in December, received a new contract in January.

Now with the lockout realized, Satele has an advantage over this year’s class of unrestricted free agents, who won’t have the benefit of participating in OTAs. The Jets do not plan on drafting an inside linebacker.

“It worked out,” Satele said. “I already have a foot in the door. I know the coaches and I know the system.”

If Satele had played for the Warriors in 2010, he would have been used as the elephant, a hybrid pass rusher/linebacker position that was implemented this past spring training.

That is fortunate for Brashton. If the lockout eats into the season, the training camp will be shortened and there will be less or no preseason games. So, it will be hard for free agents to get up to speed in a team’s system…so, Brashton is positioned well with the Jets.

Two notable bits of news regarding the University of Utah.

Michael Young, the president of the university since 2004, has accepted the same position at the University of Washington. Young’s tenure at Utah ushered in great change. He witnessed the football team bust the BCS in 2004 for the first time and then watched as they did it again in 2008.

The better news is that Utah football received its first commit of the 2012 class. Kiha Sai, a 300-pound offensive guard out of Honolulu, Hawaii, has committed to the Utes.

Kansas State is getting a new type of turf. It will be interesting to compare the performance and price of their turf with what UH gets.

Kansas State plans to install a new, more advanced type of artificial turn, becoming the first team in the FBS to use the new turf.

Astroturf says the new fiber performs most like natural grass and bounces back to an upright position faster than any other artificial surface.

It also features Astroflect heat reduction technology, which can lower the surface temperatures of the field by 18 percent. Because of the grass fiber’s unique “Omega” shape, it also doesn’t reflect light or produce glare like other forms of turf.

I went back and looked at some of the comments by hawaiiansun, warriorsun, and WSF. Noticed they all shared the same writing style (capitalized and lowercase writing). The odd thing is that they switch back and forth for each blog name. If you are going to change blog names at least remain consistent with each name.

Also, that was a shameful, dishonorable, disgraceful and whatever other synonym you can think of for WSF to do with that article about baseball bats. Totally uncool dude.

K State field will cost $600K, what did it cost the state to re-do Aloha Stadium?

AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D60H has been selected as the new field surface at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, replacing the current surface that was installed prior to the 2002 season. Mid-America Golf and Landscape will serve as project manager for the installation work, which is expected to be completed in early June. Total cost of the project is approximately $600,000.

  31. Garret April 25, 2011 11:06 am

The Utes picked up their first official commitment for the 2012 recruiting class with Kiha Sai, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman out of Kamehameha School in Honolulu committing to the Utes.

His last name should sound familiar to Utah fans since his brother, Kapua, is a current offensive lineman for the Utes.

The turf replacement at Aloha Stadium is estimated to cost $2.5 mil. K-State paid just $600k for a more advanced turf?

The cost of the turf, which is scheduled to be installed following the 2011 Pro Bowl, is projected to be about $2.5 million.

  34. Garret April 25, 2011 11:14 am

Link to Ferd’s article about the turf replacement.

The cost of the turf, which is scheduled to be installed following the 2011 Pro Bowl, is projected to be about $2.5 million. Just $2 million was allotted in the last capital improvement budget.

The current turf will be starting its eighth year and has a 10-year warranty, Chan said. But Chan said he’d like to see a quicker turnaround in the future. “You want to keep the field as state-of-the-art as possible and considered the best in Hawaii.”

  35. Ralph April 25, 2011 11:48 am

Then K State’s current field is 8 years old, same timeline as our field, but it’s replacement will cost K State $1.9 million less than Aloha stadium. Huh. The playing fields are the same size. Can shipping and labor cost be that much of a difference between Kansas and Hawaii.

  36. gigi-hawaii April 25, 2011 12:14 pm

Everything is more expensive in Hawaii than in other parts of the US. Why is that a surprise?

  37. gigi-hawaii April 25, 2011 12:14 pm

I worry about inflation, especially since the price of oil will jack up prices for other products in Hawaii.

Colt talks about playing for Glanville.

Colonials coach Jerry Glanville was defensive coordinator at Hawaii during Brennan’s first two years.

“It was a great way to have a relationship with a coach because his emphasis was on defense, but I was the guy who had to go against him every day in practice,” Brennan said. “He and I developed a tremendous relationship. He stepped up and gave me an opportunity here [in the UFL] that I really needed. I can’t wait to get back out on the football field. It’s an honor to know I have a chance to play again for Coach Glanville.”

$1.1 million more than K State’s artificial turf made by Astroturf. K State turf will be cooler and less glare than field turf, well that is what the specs states anyway. I wonder if Kansas is non-union

  74. NCAA April 25, 2011 3:57 pm

    Mr. Ralph,

Colt said that? What if he plays in the UFL for 2 years? Wouldn’t 2 years in the CFL be better?

For those wondering, touted powerhouse hitter and weightlifting high school champion Austin Wilkerson supposedly received her UH admission information a few days ago.

Currently the 2011 Rainbow Wahine recruiting class officially is:

    -Utility, Jordan “Jordie” Burton

    -Lefty Catcher/1st base, Kayla Wartner

    -Infielder/pitcher, Leisha Liilii

    -Catcher/outfielder, Lauren Parnaby

Some were wondering about the status of Austin Wilkerson as her LOI has not been received, but word is that she is on her way to be officially a part of this class.

Wilkerson, after 11 games is batting .593, 47 RBIs, and 4 homers after 27 AB.

Her touted accolades include numerous high school weightlifting records and is a dual athlete (basketball).

Her highest bat speed maxed out at 78mph. Apparently this was tested with a device, said to the latest in technology with regards to measuring accurate bat speed, on the University of Washington’s campus.

Ummm, did Colt say he didn’t want to play in the CFL?

    Kazz,

Ralph – i think Stephen mentioned that one of the CFL teams has Colt’s rights for two years?

  93. Michigan Warrior April 25, 2011 4:21 pm

Wonder if would be cheaper to have those K-State guys do the job instead? Oh, no matter… gotta pay the bidder that initial exorbitant price first, before the job can be handed off to the subs.

Wonder if the newer material that K-State is using is supposed to be both better and cheaper than what we’re getting?

Great… going to sleep with questions zooming through my head. Hmmm…

  94. Ralph April 25, 2011 4:24 pm

The state estimated the bid to be in the neighborhood of 3Million. Huh. K State did their replacement for 600K. I assume the substructure, or whatever you call whatever is under the turf remains in place with a little touch (drainage issue), so what makes the cost so much different. I can see if the field was grass, got to remove the grass and build an entirely new substructure with drainage but that is not the case with Aloha stadium. No wonder that state is running a deficit.

  95. Michigan Warrior April 25, 2011 4:29 pm

Okay, local company bids on the job after talking with the company that did the K-State job, so they know how much the materials will cost, plus having to fly the K-State crew over, plus having the K-State crew rent the machinery from another local company.

    So… maybe a million-dollar job instead? Hmmm…

Okay, maybe we fly them over first class, and bring them plate lunch every day… how much now?

Nah, going sleep already. G’night all!

  96. Ralph April 25, 2011 4:31 pm

MW the turf at K State is made by Astro turf, the material is said to be better because it is cooler than other field turfs, and reflects less glare. The cost difference has to be labor costs, add shipping. Maybe the big guy would chime in an give us an idea how much would it cost to ship the turf, no wait, shipping costs washes, all turfs got to be shipped in no matter what brand UH or the state picks.

  97. Loa April 25, 2011 4:36 pm

one thing i no understand is the bid was 1.2M but the award amount ended up at 1.7M

  99. Ralph April 25, 2011 4:44 pm

  105. Garret April 25, 2011 5:21 pm

NCAA i only stated what someone else posted, second hand info on Colt’s reason to pick UFL over CFL.

    Ralph,

The information comes direct from Colt’s agent and from Colt’s Dad.

About choosing the UFL over the CFL, Colt’s Dad Terry Brennan said:

“This looks like a good opportunity for Colt. I think Colt and his agents like this because playing in Canada requires a two-year contract and this doesn’t. The season ends in November and if he does well he could possibly be picked up by an NFL team.” (HSA)

But with the lockout, and no chance to work out for NFL teams, “obviously my options are pretty limited.” Calgary owns the Canadian Football League’s negotiation rights to Brennan. But given the CFL’s different rules and wider fields, plus the standard two-year commitment, Brennan felt the UFL would be a better option. The eight-game, three-month season ends in November, enough time to receive a shot with an NFL team.”

About why Colt preferred the UFL over the CFL, Tollner said:

“The UFL is less of an adjustment. The games are on television. The big thing is the chance for him to get on the field and show that he’s an elite player.” (HSA)

    http://uhwarriorquotes.blogspot.com/

  106. Garret April 25, 2011 5:26 pm

Why do people think that Colt should go to the CFL and turn down this opportunity? CFL teams already have their starting QB set and the top backup set. They have restrictions on the number of non-Canadians they can have on their roster. Given that, Colt’s chances to play are minimal and he needs to play now.

Colt is 28. He has a very short window to prove himself so that he can have future opportunities. He’s coming off 2 surgeries and then a catastrophic car accident after he recovered from those surgeries. In other words, the NFL and the CFL won’t give him a chance to play, even in preseason.

Colt needs to play right away. He needs to prove he is healthy and still has his accuracy. What other coach is going to give him the immediate playing time he needs? Glanville just took over the job in Hartford so he doesn’t have a starting QB set. What are Colt’s other options that could be better than that?

  107. jerrodblog April 25, 2011 5:27 pm

I really hope that they figure out your NFL Lockout rapidly.

    Howzit Tsaikos!!

Happy Birthday to all the birthday peeps!!

    Welcome back, Gavin Petersen!

NCAA – no worries, he’s a local boy, graduating from the same high school as other notables, such as Joe Onosai, Leroy Lutu, Egan Inoue, Margaret Vakasausau, Dana Takahara and, last but not least, Stretch!

    GO JR BOWS!! 😀

  111. LizKauai -iPad April 25, 2011 6:09 pm

    Good luck, Brashton!

Best of health to all Tsai-kos. Every moment we can share together in support of chosen teams is something to be treasured.

Smiles and aloha from the land of cheaper gas and weather that changes by the minute. 🙂

  116. LizKauai -iPad April 25, 2011 6:48 pm

#106. I agree about Colt needing to play sooner than later. He is older than Aaron Rodgers and needs a coach that will trust him and allow him to inspire himself and his teammates while he is still in his prime. GO COLT!

  117. Dennis Halloran April 25, 2011 7:04 pm

All correct, Colt needs to play

Same age as Kurt Warner in Indoor FB

After watching spring games, it looks like this is the fall to play USC, not next

    UWub will be tougher

    Good to get Army here

I’m thinking 10-11 wins pre injuries

  123. SteveM April 25, 2011 9:03 pm

    Slow night, but happier times….so…

On this day (April 25) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … count dips slightly to 390 comments. Busy day. gigi-hawaii starts organizing the Tsai-ko meet-up at the UH final scrimmage at Aloha Stadium (the Ohana Fest– later known as the Warrior Bowl). Too bad it rained on her in the stands that night…the rain may have changed history that night. 😉

Dave Reardon posts on the blog to explain a situation. Remember, the Advertiser and Star-Bulletin were separate in those days. 🙂

las vegas posted several jokes, and learns that Al and Sakana will be heading his way. Al is staying and the Nugget and Sakana at the Fremont. Sakana will try to locate Al. I note (privately) that neither knows each others real names and what they look like…. a far cry from today! 😆

ST announces the Gordon Biersch gathering and SteveM initially thinks its a gathering with someone with a few 6-packs. 🙁

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

Hey, guys, don’t forget the Ohana Spring Practice Festival on Saturday night. Enter thru Gate 4 and let’s all meet on the South Concourse where the players will autograph from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. All fans will sit in the Makai section.

    Those who plan to attend:

Gigi and Mr. Gigi (we will wear name tags)

    Jason

    Kazz

    Hawaiian Bod

    Wreck

    Tom Mui

    addahknowjoe

    Anybody else?

    04/25/07 @ 07:59

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

Since I am not familiar with Aloha Stadium, I’ll let Jason lead the way to the makai section. Hope there will be enough seats for us to sit together as a group.

    04/25/07 @ 10:45

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

Not sure yet, gigi. Will let you know. In the crowd there, people might have a hard time spotting your name tag. Peaches and I can spot you and hubby. How about holding a foil baloon? 😉

    04/25/07 @ 11:13

    Comment from: Tom Mui [Visitor]

    GIGI:

    What kind/types/number of balloons? -:-)

    04/25/07 @ 13:33

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

Red Zone, please join us on Saturday. Meet us on the South Concourse at 5:30.

Tom, I am not even sure stadium security will allow me to bring in balloons. Will they? If so, I’ll bring 2 regular balloons, tied to my wrist on a long string.

    04/25/07 @ 13:50

[Note the decisiveness. No wonder Tsai-kos never had problems with identification in the early days, even in large venues. LOL …and speaking of identification…]

    Comment from: Stephen [Member]

    FOOD ALERT:

Tracy Orillo Donovan would like to (partially) host a blog party. She has $150 worth of Gordon Biersch certificates. So she would use those, and we’d run a tab.

    Are we interested?

    04/25/07 @ 22:40

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

ST, pardon my ignorance, but who is Tracy Orillo Donovan and what are Gordon Biersch certificates?

Our resident chef and restaurant boss is on a red-eye to Vegas at this minute…

    04/25/07 @ 22:46

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

Is Tracy related to Jim Donovan?

    04/25/07 @ 22:59

    Comment from: nevarainsinewaplains [Visitor]

I haven’t visited the blog for a few days.

    Welcome back Gigi.

    moanalua, nice link on Ilaoa.

    Hmmm. $150.00 divided by $3.50 a bottle = 42 bottles of beer.

    Dave Reardon, even.

    04/25/07 @ 23:04

    Comment from: Stephen [Member]

Not sure if you guys realize it, but everyone wants to know everyone’s true identity.

This is Tracy’s way of meeting some of the gang.

    04/25/07 @ 23:04

    Comment from: WarriorMojo [Visitor]

And for this info she’s willing to PAY?! There’re a couple of identities of posters that I’d REALLY like to know, but I don’t know that I’m willing to give up mine to get theirs. Hmmm….

    04/25/07 @ 23:17

[also note that to this day, no photo that shows WarriorMojo’s face is posted in SteveM’s photo archives–by WM’s request…but we got plenty 🙄 ]

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forced by the occasion.

  155. Eagle April 26, 2011 1:03 am

From Jerry Glanville radio interview last week:

    Colt was dead accurate – hit the receivers and exactly in the right place – couldn’t believe he could do this so soon after the accident;

    Last year’s #1 QB, McCown hasn’t indicated if he’s coming back yet;

Both QBs from last year were picked up by NFL [? Practice squad. etc.?]

    18 players and 6 coaches were picked up by NFL from this team;

50 to 60 players per year were picked up [from Five Teams in first two years]

    ——————–

    Sounds better than most CFL options based on Coach-Player Trust and Opportunities to play as well as availability and relationship/alignment with NFL;

    GO COLT !

Need to figure how to get these games on TV/Internet …

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  162. wafan April 26, 2011 3:16 am

Looks like UH screwed up . . . again.

Coach Gib has a lot of leverage and he has people. UH has little. Looks like UH pays and still has not learned anything.

    The JJ scenario redux?

  163. Garret April 26, 2011 3:18 am

    Jason,

I voted for Moanalua and was happy to see that Moanalua is dominating right now! 767 votes, 42.33% of the total. The New Mexico school is second at 431 votes.

  164. Garret April 26, 2011 3:19 am

    wafan,

At least this time the Athletic Department isn’t at fault. Still, Upper Campus’ mistake could cost the Atheltic Department a lot of money…and then Upper Campus will criticize JD for the Athletic Department not having a balanced budget.

  165. Curt April 26, 2011 3:26 am

    al and Ralph,

Yes. I’m still at the airport waiting for the Twin Towers from Senegal to show up. Where are they al?

  166. Curt April 26, 2011 3:33 am

    al,

Thanks for the birdie report. Yes we need a guard who can weave all ova da place and create opportunities for his teammates. And I do remember NYC guard, Reggie Carter. Stayed only one year but made a pretty good impact even though he was just a freshman. I remember watching him in Klum gym once where he was bringing the ball down casually; he was mixing in some cross-over dribbles so well that his defender got his legs all crossed up and fell over. He was so cool and casual and it was funny his defender got all tangled up.

  167. Curt April 26, 2011 3:42 am

    al,

#141 Some of us have to work for a living. We all can’t all be living like King Al chasing birdies by day and watching Snooky and her friends by nite.

    Ralph,

#150 Yes. I am older than dirt. I was one of a small band that welcomed Captain Cooke when he showed up in the islands. Also, I was the one who greeted the survivors of the Oceanic flight that crashed here awhile back; do you remember Dr Jack Shepherd, Kate, Sawyer, Jin, John Locke, etc? They call me da Smoke Munster.

Oowhee, now thats the type of point guard we should be looking for to run the Warrior ship right. Quick, mad handles, great vision and relentless getting teammates involved and getting buckets when needed. Defensively you know Coach Gib will have this guy become a lock down defender, he already got the speed and quickness to move laterally. Hope Coach Gib is relentless in his approach to recruiting this guy. His name alone could definitely be heard on the nightly highlight reels of Warrior BBall.

  179. Pauoa Boy April 26, 2011 7:22 am

Was just reading an article on which schools have the most NFL Draft picks since 2000 and the most first-rounders… guess who tops our conference??? Well since 2000, Fresno State and our Warriors lead the conference with 20 draft picks, with Fresno leading with 3 first rounders to our 1, Ashley Lelie. Pretty good recruiting tool if you ask me. We got the talent, now it’s time to put it all together and make ish happen…

Plus, with that being said maybe this year we take the lead with potential draftees Greg Salas, Alex Green, Kealoha Pilares…maybe Mana Silva, Rodney Bradley, Laupepa Letuli, and Kamalu Umu???

  180. Pauoa Boy April 26, 2011 7:25 am

Yup and although Boise State been dominating the conference since joining, they are in 3rd behind us and Fresno in the amount of draft picks sent to the NFL since 2000. Well, since we will all be moving to the MWC next year, lets see which school is actually producing the most NFL talent…

So, I’m reading my, (Dallas Morning News) paper and come across this article on, (SMU Football),…..and o.k., I’m reading the article,(u-know, coach Jones and all), and towards the end…the reporter states that, “Colt Brennan, the former record-setting QB under Jones at Hawaii, visited a practice recently and encouraged Padron(smu-qb), to remain confident.”

Just wondering if JJ maybe might be interested in adding Colt to his staff if things don’t workout with the Arena type ball mentioned earlier?

I thought I was buying an authentic item from an on-line website (not ebay). When i finally got it, it was obvious it was a fake (to me at least). So I decided that I would try to get my money back by selling it on ebay but I stated it was a replica and selling it for what I paid – $85. Then I started thinking that I could get in trouble by this? I googled this information and found mixed answers. So to be on the safe side, I just took the item down. I guess im out $85. Could be worse I guess. I should’ve expected it to be fake. Just wanted a matching wallet for my purse, but didn’t want to spend $700 on a wallet. Im only crazy enough to do that with a purse :(. . But what I want to know is all the sellers that claim their items as “authentic” and are selling dozens of the different brands, where and how do they get them if they truly are real? If they are making a profit off these items, they must be getting them at a cheaper price, but how? Stores like Louis Vuitton only sell in their stores. And Louis Vuitton does not have sales. Am I wrong here?.
