A couple of minutes with … Raphael Ieru
After enduring several injury-related setbacks the past few years, Raphael Ieru is poised to start at right guard in his senior season. Ieru, a McKinley High graduate, took a couple of minutes to answer questions from the Warrior Beat:
Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello …
“Everybody thought (Teenage Ninja Turtles is) where my name came from. It came from my uncle in Seattle. He has a long Samoan name. In the middle is Lafaele, which means Raphael. That’s where my mom got it.”
He answers to Ralph:
“It makes me sound tough. Raphael is more formal. A lot of people call me Raf. They said it shouldn’t be Ralph because I don’t have an ‘L’ in my name. I didn’t like Raf, either. I always told them to call me Ralph.”
The story of the tat:
“Me and my mom were chillin’ at home, and I told her I wanted to do a tat. So we did that. She said it was OK. My dad was the one who gave me a hard time about it. … My brother-in-law did it with a home-made gun. … He loves to draw. I figured I’d trust him. I let him blast a tat on my body. It took three hours (each day) for three days. He had to do different portions for my arm. It took forever. It was sore. It was one needle. The more needles the better.”
Born in Kalihi, raised a Tiger:
“My uncle Nick Ma‘afala asked me to come to McKinley. I was debating whether to go to Farrington or a private school like Saint Louis or Damien. He passed (away) while I was enrolled in McKinley. I stuck it out. I liked it. (Head coach) David Tanuvasa was good to me. He kept me on the right path.”
Should McKinley compete in Division II?
“They should go up (to Division I). It’s tougher competition. That’s what makes you better. McKinley is a pretty big school.”
His favorite journalist is Advertiser blogger Kelli Miura, also a McKinley graduate:
“She’s a homey. She’s a good friend of mine. She’s always been cool with me.”

Happy birthday to Stephanie Lum, one of the Best of the Best.
Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!
Mornin’ A-Joe.
Hope Ieru remains healthy as the rest of our OLinemen. We need as much consistency as possible on the line. If they can remain in tact, we’ll be auryte…

Hi Liz and PB!
ST-
don’t know yet.
Liz –
Looking forward to next week. I will check your site for your pics.
I guess there were some suggestions to have Chris Tormey and Ron Lee as guests.
The coaches have the clinic this Tuesday.
Ron Lee doesn’t want to do video chats.
okay, i am here.
well we can’t call ralph, ralph anymore.
why don’t we call him raphael instead.
Or we can call him Raf.
i told you ron lee was an ellusive guest.
okay plan c……i good one now that he has recovered and back to work.
none other than robert k. the big guy’s kitv contract would prohibit i think or the tiser would frown at other media personalities.
Liz per Kekoa, JJ’s mom was taken into emergency surgery tonight
liz you didn’t read the other blog did you
#74 Raphael Ieru 6-2, 315
2008 (Junior): Appeared in eight games as a reserve lineman and special teams player.
#63 Brysen Ginlack 6-2, 310
2008 (Sophomore): Played in nine games…started five straight games and during the first half of the season…made first career start in home opener vs. Weber State (Sept. 6)…also started at Oregon State (Sept. 13), vs. San Jose State (Sept. 27), at Fresno State (Oct. 4) and vs. Louisiana Tech (Oct. 11).
I’ve tracked both these players. And they both show signs that they could become breakout players for UH. In the LaTech game (the rerun I watched last weekend) Brysen, I thought, did well with his pass and run blocking before getting injured before the half. Rafael taking his place at the right guards spot did well, too.
It’ll be interesting to see how this develops this coming season. But I’m telling you keep an eye on Brysen, too.
hi asports! we’d rather talk to you anyway.
we need to have some pho or thai pretty soon.
something tells me that ray will have a huge year.
roysan16,
I actually thought “Bulla” had chance for start this year but it seems Ray Hisatake has the Left Guard spot on lock for now. Knowing Ieru’s health history, Ginlack will get his fair share of playing time…
al-
I’m waiting for the hottest day of the year to call Homey out on a pho call 🙂
Augie Tulba is perfect for us.
He’s funny.
He’s a former athlete (boxing).
And, like Malcolm Lane, he has his own car.
st…if not the big guy.
i know two big guys who are buddies who if appeared on the show together would make great conversations/interviews of how it was then and what they think of the warrior program now.
keith ah yuen and tom tuinei.
like i ask em?
I think Ieru is going to have a monster year.
plus they get car too
I think this Oline all together if they remain healthy with Coach Shaw keeping them inline, could be very good. Estes, Letuli, Kia, Ieru, Hisatake have the potential to dominate…
okay….gotta go bed now. i actually went swimming today and got a bit of burn going on.
plus, that breakfast at rosie’s cantina was heavy. felt like siesta-ing all day. good thing the bar was closed.
Oh, oh another site (sport’shawaii.com) started (a day ago) a thread where UH recruits, Ma’afala and Lopati, will not qualify. Interesting talk surrounding this, where the two may end up at West Oahu next year before entering UH for the 2010 season.
Hopefully (J)J’s mother pulls through with her surgery.
CRW found a job yet….
A little perturbed that the personalized ad banners on the side and bottom of the blog page is trying to hawk colon-cleansing products…..like I really need that stuff!
Come on, now!
🙄
Ralph:
Still looking. I’m in the running for a couple gigs…..one in SF and the odda in DC.
We’ll see if I get either (or both).
What hospital is she in?
…..above post 37 should have said “SF-metro”…..
ST ~ Check your cell phone text msg.
i think our blog host should consider this as his next karaoke performance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6UJZtCz1-c
Hey, any ad is good for us (we’re still down 10 percent. Grrrrr.)
kekoa….send me one email too.
Kekoa:
You have to text at 256-0223.
Or just call me. I’ll be up another hour.
PB,
Listening to Ron Lee, “This is the fastest team we have ever had”. He even mentioned the receivers, as a group, as being one of the best UH has ever had.
Then you look at the RB, QB, SS, DB, offensive line and say.. wow.. we might surprise a few teams this year. I think we might.
Get that punter and place kicker here and the special teams w/ Lane doing KR and Bradley doing the PR UH might surprise on special teams, too.
The young players emerging like Laurel, Hanohano, Lewis Walker, Steve Stepter, Steven Christian, Paipai, Alasi–now if they come around there’s no excuse why this team can’t be better than last year.
Is Father’s Day this Sunday…..or next?
Don’t wanna make the mistake of forgetting like I did on Mother’s Day this year…..
Mum: Hi, CRW! How’s everything going?
CRW: Everything’s fine on my end.
Mum: That’s good. Everybody else called me today and I was wondering when you’d give me a ring.
CRW: Was something special going on today?
Mum: Today is Mother’s Day.
CRW: [crickets chirping] [silence]
roysan16,
I share the optimism as well. All around we have better talent and are a bit deeper in all positions. There are obviously more guys who could start on this team and would definitely be starting on others. Regardless, the only thing I don’t see yet is a guy who can change the game, a go to guy. I mean don’t get me wrong we have some future stars and NFL talent, but that one guy you can rely on when the game is on the line. Like Ashley Lelie, Chad Owens, Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullens, Jason Rivers, Nate Ilaoa, the type of guys defenses would lose sleep over and she she pants on game day knowing they could take it to the house anytime they touched the ball. Guys have showed flashes but have been inconsistent to warrant being the go to guy. This year could have a couple emerge and seperate themselves. I’m keeping my eye on Rodney Bradley, Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares, Inoke Funaki, and LWJ on offense. Defensively I hope the secondary lives up to the hype. With Rocky back on the line I’m sure he’s hungry to destroy QB’s and eat RB’s for lunch. Our linebackers can obviously hit and look to be intimidating. Can’t wait to see it all come together…looking forward to an exciting season…
Good morning everyone!
Prayers and super-positive thoughts to (J)J’s mom.
Keep your head up, (J)J!
All those lists sure brought back a ton of memories of good games, a rocking stadium, pre and post-game tailgates, and students running to get to their favorite seats.
Thanks!
al,
those guys I was mentioning for all-time was as far back as I could remember. Guys like Larry Cole, Jeris White, Raphel Cherry, etc…was before my time…
Morning everyone. Testing new toy.

Good luck to Raphael and his OL cohorts as they “work” their way thru the summer.
Good morning Tsaikos. Speedy recovery for J/J mom and Happy Birthday Stephanie.
MW started the day with a double bogey, but redeemed herself with a hole in one and is now even for the day.
Good Morning All! Prayers and thoughts for J(J)’s mom.
Favorites:
Garret Gabriel, QB – Individual back-to-back performances against BYU matched anything Colt did and within a running offense.
Jeff Synder, the original Hawaii Heisman candidate
Dane McArthur – Caught passes when they counted.
Chad Owens – even my wife would start what she was doing if he was lining up for a punt return.
Travis Sims – 1,400 yards straight up the middle.
and the list goes on…..
Howzit Everybody,
Prayers go out to J(J) and his mom. May the lord be with both of you.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Prayers for JJ’s mom. Here’s wishing her a speedy recovery. Hang in there Jesse.

hey that’s just part of football. anyway i think that kid transferred out.
hello Tsaiko’s near and far
wanted to add my prayers and best thoughts for (J)J’s mom too…….speedy recovery.
yeah seems like the depth is getting better with good competition and hence depth everywhere? we’ll need it as players do get nicks and bruises throughout the season.
Re-Greg Alexander
Another thought. Maybe you picked up on this, too. Looking back last year at Alexander, when he first came onto the scene, he had a go for broke style in how he ran the ball. He would punish the defenders on his runs. When you look at how Alexander was sacked 32 times in the 9 games he played–he still ended the season with a net of 139 yards. This is amazing. It saying that he has game and tenacity in him. It’s also saying he has a little shake and bake in him. For the other 58 times he carried the ball he gained 345 yards. Also to endure what he’s faced, maybe the opposing team’s defenders rushing him quickly, and still ending the season completing 63% of his passes is also amazing. IMO, what Alexander did last year under those conditions are unprecedented–for I think there’s very few QB around that be under that much duress/pressure and still do pretty well.
A few adjustments, a few players stepping up and the O-Line improving and giving Alexander some love, aka time to pass, then it stands to be very optimistic for UH in the upcoming season. And for Alexander.
On another note watching the rerun of the LaTech game last weekend got my juices flowing again (positive). It’s just like I can hear the drums beating again. K5 or maybe UHAD by spiking the fan’s interest with the summer reruns of last season’s games is winning over fans for the upcoming season. I think so.
A look back at Alexander’s game stats from last season
Florida-start (lost 56-10)
11-21-2 57 -29 (rush) 12 (long) 3 (sack)
The next five games he didn’t play.
Weber, Oregon State, San Jose , Fresno State, LaTech
(in the 5 games he didn’t play the OL gave up 15 sacks)
Boise State-reserve (lost 27-7)
3-4-0 44 +14(rush) 29(long) 2 (sack)
Nevada-start (win 38-31)
17-22-0 205 +21(rush) 29 (long) 3 (sack)
Utah State- start (loss 30-14)
13-27-0 186 +57(rush) 34 (long) 0(sack)
New Mexico State-start (win 42-30)

roysan-
Good info above. Recent history has shown that RnS QBs are better in their second year of starting. Coupled with other factors you shared above, it’s not hard to imagine that UH can be very explosive on offense next year. The key is the O-line, and I think they will surprise.
James- i hope all is well with you and your mom. Aloha!
Thoughts and Prayers to JJ’s Mom!
James, I hope that your Mom is doing well and that the rest of your family is doing well also.

Yay for Ralph! I’m sooo proud of him! And I’m his favorite journalist? Cool!
My thoughts go out to (Jesse)James’ and his family. Hang in there and here’s to a fast and complete recovery.
Dang. making it to 150 will be tough today.
Who would argue with Ralph about which journalist he likes?
Kind of like that old joke about the 500 pound gorilla sitting where ever he wants.
Must be so hot there everything is either moving slowly or somewhere cool.
Any word on (J)J’s mom?
5 more wake ups with kids, then 1 staff day.
100!!!
Any chance Coach Takahara Dias gets this young lady to transfer

Hawaii is in her top 4.
Also any news on Vicky Taglicod and Shawna Kuehu?
Getting those 3 players would vault the wahine to the top of the Wac.
I searched a long time for this info. I just have to say thank you for posting this.
I suppose one could always hope for a short so they knock themselves out.
#102-
Thanks for the stunning info.
What a horrifically slow day on the blog!
Looks like I didn’t miss much today…..
Greg Alexander should be inline for a great season. He has the weapons at his disposal. We have speed, depth, and INOKE in the backfield. The possibilities for this offense to be explosive is endless. Just think if LWJ finally gets loose, Rodney Bradley is as advertised, we all know what Salas, Pilares, Lane, and Medeiros can do. Blount, Taylor, Tinoco, Pollard, Avery, etc…all have the potential to explode. The Oline with a year more experienced, Senior leadership with Letuli, Kia, Estes, Ieru, and Hisatake…I’m sure they will hold down the fort. I’m ready for some football!
JJ, I am keeping your mom in my prayers.
While we are all exicted about 2009, I am concerned about getting an entire front 5 on the O-line and QB for 2010.
Hope Ccoach Mack and staff has a replacement plan in place so the “reserves” can get some playing time this year. It would be no different than a succession plan for a company.
Bess was among the 3 players returning kickoffs for Miami today. Miami was not happy with Ginn’s kick returns last year.
Report from Miami’s practice. This note was good:
The note from the morning practice was good, but this note from the afternoon practice wasn’t too good.

This seems like a simple way to combat global warming–paint our roofs, roads, and pavements white. Lightening the color to the color of cement would be the equivalent of eliminating all pollution from cars for 11 years! It also would reduce the need for air conditioning, which would eliminate even more emissions.

A-House you right on that one…
But not just QB and OLine most of the starting offense is Senior Heavy this year… Alexander, LWJ, Inoke, Rego, Lane, Medeiros, Kia, Letuli, Estes, Ieru, Hisatake.
Not to mention our DLine will probably take and even bigger hit with all these Seniors…Rocky, Tufaga, Leatigaga, Fonoti, Brashton, Clore, Tua, Allen-Jones, Rink, Montgomery
Hopefully the guys behind get some game time experience this year, but dayum that’s alot of talent and experience to replace…
Put it this way, Davone Bess would be the only Miami receiver worth picking up in Fantasy Football…
Yep.. next season, 2010, is the real rebuilding year. New Offense. Will need new RBs, New Defense … and a pretty tough schedule.
If Mac’s recruiting pans out, that should be the last rebuild, as each last year of eligibility senior would be backed by an up and coming ready-to-takeover underclassman.
We shall see.
as for me….i am going to enjoy this year first. i agree that we will do much better than last year.
For what it’s worth, here’s my choice’s for all-time UH team, outstanding players are left off but these names, their impact at UH (many for NFL impact) warrant their selection to “my” all-time UH squad 1st team.

Raphael may not like this, but Im going to say it anyway. He is one of the sweetest, most pleasant young men I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. May be mean as a snake on the field but hes just the kind you want to give a big hug to every time you see him. Im sure he doesnt want to be called sweet though!
I spoke to Vantz Singletary often before he left Buffalo for 49ers and he always asks about Raphael. Said he reminds him of himself.
