A couple of minutes with … Raphael Ieru

jn11-ralph

After enduring several injury-related setbacks the past few years, Raphael Ieru is poised to start at right guard in his senior season. Ieru, a McKinley High graduate, took a couple of minutes to answer questions from the Warrior Beat:

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello …
“Everybody thought (Teenage Ninja Turtles is) where my name came from. It came from my uncle in Seattle. He has a long Samoan name. In the middle is Lafaele, which means Raphael. That’s where my mom got it.”

He answers to Ralph:
“It makes me sound tough. Raphael is more formal. A lot of people call me Raf. They said it shouldn’t be Ralph because I don’t have an ‘L’ in my name. I didn’t like Raf, either. I always told them to call me Ralph.”

The story of the tat:
“Me and my mom were chillin’ at home, and I told her I wanted to do a tat. So we did that. She said it was OK. My dad was the one who gave me a hard time about it. … My brother-in-law did it with a home-made gun. … He loves to draw. I figured I’d trust him. I let him blast a tat on my body. It took three hours (each day) for three days. He had to do different portions for my arm. It took forever. It was sore. It was one needle. The more needles the better.”

jn11-tat1
Born in Kalihi, raised a Tiger:
“My uncle Nick Ma‘afala asked me to come to McKinley. I was debating whether to go to Farrington or a private school like Saint Louis or Damien. He passed (away) while I was enrolled in McKinley. I stuck it out. I liked it. (Head coach) David Tanuvasa was good to me. He kept me on the right path.”

Should McKinley compete in Division II?
“They should go up (to Division I). It’s tougher competition. That’s what makes you better. McKinley is a pretty big school.”

His favorite journalist is Advertiser blogger Kelli Miura, also a McKinley graduate:
“She’s a homey. She’s a good friend of mine. She’s always been cool with me.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with (Jesse)James’ mother, who underwent emergency surgery last night.

Happy birthday to Stephanie Lum, one of the Best of the Best.

    #74 Raphael Ieru 6-2, 315

2008 (Junior): Appeared in eight games as a reserve lineman and special teams player.

    #63 Brysen Ginlack 6-2, 310

2008 (Sophomore): Played in nine games…started five straight games and during the first half of the season…made first career start in home opener vs. Weber State (Sept. 6)…also started at Oregon State (Sept. 13), vs. San Jose State (Sept. 27), at Fresno State (Oct. 4) and vs. Louisiana Tech (Oct. 11).

I’ve tracked both these players. And they both show signs that they could become breakout players for UH. In the LaTech game (the rerun I watched last weekend) Brysen, I thought, did well with his pass and run blocking before getting injured before the half. Rafael taking his place at the right guards spot did well, too.

It’ll be interesting to see how this develops this coming season. But I’m telling you keep an eye on Brysen, too.

    roysan16,
I actually thought “Bulla” had chance for start this year but it seems Ray Hisatake has the Left Guard spot on lock for now. Knowing Ieru’s health history, Ginlack will get his fair share of playing time…

  31. Pauoa Boy June 13, 2009 1:14 am

I think this Oline all together if they remain healthy with Coach Shaw keeping them inline, could be very good. Estes, Letuli, Kia, Ieru, Hisatake have the potential to dominate…

    PB,

Listening to Ron Lee, “This is the fastest team we have ever had”. He even mentioned the receivers, as a group, as being one of the best UH has ever had.

Then you look at the RB, QB, SS, DB, offensive line and say.. wow.. we might surprise a few teams this year. I think we might.

Get that punter and place kicker here and the special teams w/ Lane doing KR and Bradley doing the PR UH might surprise on special teams, too.

The young players emerging like Laurel, Hanohano, Lewis Walker, Steve Stepter, Steven Christian, Paipai, Alasi–now if they come around there’s no excuse why this team can’t be better than last year.

  48. Pauoa Boy June 13, 2009 3:18 am

    roysan16,
I share the optimism as well. All around we have better talent and are a bit deeper in all positions. There are obviously more guys who could start on this team and would definitely be starting on others. Regardless, the only thing I don’t see yet is a guy who can change the game, a go to guy. I mean don’t get me wrong we have some future stars and NFL talent, but that one guy you can rely on when the game is on the line. Like Ashley Lelie, Chad Owens, Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullens, Jason Rivers, Nate Ilaoa, the type of guys defenses would lose sleep over and she she pants on game day knowing they could take it to the house anytime they touched the ball. Guys have showed flashes but have been inconsistent to warrant being the go to guy. This year could have a couple emerge and seperate themselves. I’m keeping my eye on Rodney Bradley, Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares, Inoke Funaki, and LWJ on offense. Defensively I hope the secondary lives up to the hype. With Rocky back on the line I’m sure he’s hungry to destroy QB’s and eat RB’s for lunch. Our linebackers can obviously hit and look to be intimidating. Can’t wait to see it all come together…looking forward to an exciting season…

    Re-Greg Alexander

Another thought. Maybe you picked up on this, too. Looking back last year at Alexander, when he first came onto the scene, he had a go for broke style in how he ran the ball. He would punish the defenders on his runs. When you look at how Alexander was sacked 32 times in the 9 games he played–he still ended the season with a net of 139 yards. This is amazing. It saying that he has game and tenacity in him. It’s also saying he has a little shake and bake in him. For the other 58 times he carried the ball he gained 345 yards. Also to endure what he’s faced, maybe the opposing team’s defenders rushing him quickly, and still ending the season completing 63% of his passes is also amazing. IMO, what Alexander did last year under those conditions are unprecedented–for I think there’s very few QB around that be under that much duress/pressure and still do pretty well.

A few adjustments, a few players stepping up and the O-Line improving and giving Alexander some love, aka time to pass, then it stands to be very optimistic for UH in the upcoming season. And for Alexander.

On another note watching the rerun of the LaTech game last weekend got my juices flowing again (positive). It’s just like I can hear the drums beating again. K5 or maybe UHAD by spiking the fan’s interest with the summer reruns of last season’s games is winning over fans for the upcoming season. I think so.

A look back at Alexander’s game stats from last season

    Florida-start (lost 56-10)

    11-21-2 57 -29 (rush) 12 (long) 3 (sack)

The next five games he didn’t play.

Weber, Oregon State, San Jose , Fresno State, LaTech
(in the 5 games he didn’t play the OL gave up 15 sacks)

    Boise State-reserve (lost 27-7)

    3-4-0 44 +14(rush) 29(long) 2 (sack)

    Nevada-start (win 38-31)

    17-22-0 205 +21(rush) 29 (long) 3 (sack)

    Utah State- start (loss 30-14)

    13-27-0 186 +57(rush) 34 (long) 0(sack)

    New Mexico State-start (win 42-30)

    26-32-0 288 +37 (rush) 25(long) 4 (sack)

    Idaho-start (win 49-17)

    14-24-0 264 +9(rush) 82 (long) 2 (sack)

    Washington State-start (win 24-10)

    19-34-1 315 +43(rush) 48 (long) 5 (sack)

    Cincinnati-start (loss 27-24)

    28-42-1 275 +3(rush) 60 (long) 5 (sack)

    Notre Dame-start (loss 49-21)

    23-39-1 261 -16(rush) 42 (long) 8(sack)

  85. Da Punchbowl Kid June 13, 2009 12:57 pm

    roysan-

Good info above. Recent history has shown that RnS QBs are better in their second year of starting. Coupled with other factors you shared above, it’s not hard to imagine that UH can be very explosive on offense next year. The key is the O-line, and I think they will surprise.

  86. Jack Flash June 13, 2009 1:17 pm

    Feature article on Ikaika Alama-Francis.

Now, Alama-Francis has started with a clean slate with the new coaching staff. With a new “get bigger and get stronger” edict for the team, Alama-Francis has gone from 275 pounds to 290 pounds and even joked that he’s getting taller.

“Well, I’m wearing thicker cleats this year,” he said. “I’ve gained about half an inch.”

  90. Garret June 13, 2009 2:47 pm

High school baseball umpire ejected the whole crowd!

After both coaches were warned by Briggs, the crowd also drew a warning.

When a fan yelled from the crowd, Briggs ejected the entire crowd from the game.

Briggs then called West Burlington police, while West Burlington High School secretary Mary Storch, who witnessed the episode, called superintendent James Sleister, who came over to the field.

Any chance Coach Takahara Dias gets this young lady to transfer

Hawaii is in her top 4.

Also any news on Vicky Taglicod and Shawna Kuehu?

Getting those 3 players would vault the wahine to the top of the Wac.

Greg Alexander should be inline for a great season. He has the weapons at his disposal. We have speed, depth, and INOKE in the backfield. The possibilities for this offense to be explosive is endless. Just think if LWJ finally gets loose, Rodney Bradley is as advertised, we all know what Salas, Pilares, Lane, and Medeiros can do. Blount, Taylor, Tinoco, Pollard, Avery, etc…all have the potential to explode. The Oline with a year more experienced, Senior leadership with Letuli, Kia, Estes, Ieru, and Hisatake…I’m sure they will hold down the fort. I’m ready for some football!

JJ, I am keeping your mom in my prayers.

  108. A-House June 13, 2009 7:47 pm

While we are all exicted about 2009, I am concerned about getting an entire front 5 on the O-line and QB for 2010.

Hope Ccoach Mack and staff has a replacement plan in place so the “reserves” can get some playing time this year. It would be no different than a succession plan for a company.

  109. Garret June 13, 2009 8:02 pm

Bess was among the 3 players returning kickoffs for Miami today. Miami was not happy with Ginn’s kick returns last year.

Davone Bess, Chris Williams and Brennan Marion were practicing returning kickoffs. Miami was among the worst in the league at both kick returns and kick coverage last season, and coach Tony Sparano said earlier in the day he’s on the lookout for guys who can help improve the special teams.

  110. Garret June 13, 2009 8:03 pm

Report from Miami’s practice. This note was good:

White to Bess underneath the coverage for a 10-yard score. After that drill ended, Bess staying behind to spend a few minutes for Bill Parcells, who jumps out of the golf cart to demonstrate a thing or two. The talk ended with Parcells giving Bess a fist bump.

  111. Garret June 13, 2009 8:04 pm

The note from the morning practice was good, but this note from the afternoon practice wasn’t too good.

Bess can’t catch a deep out to the LSL with Nathan Jones in tight coverage. Again, Sparano doesn’t seem pleased, but not sure if he’s mad at Bess or not. (Think so.)

KGMB article and video about the camp held at UH this weekend. I hope that the kids had a lot of fun and dream about growing up to be Warriors.

This weekend is reserved for the kids camp. That’s for children in the age range of 5 to 12. Kids will go through the same exercises and drills as the Warrior football players do, and they’ll get hands on training from more than 20 coaches and current and former UH players.

Last year more than a thousand kids showed up for all three camps and Coach Mack hopes this years turnout will be just as big. “The little guys come out on Saturday and Sunday,” McMackin said. “Their parents get all around the field it’s like having a little super bowl out there for little guys. It’s exciting for us just to get to work with all of the little guys.”

This seems like a simple way to combat global warming–paint our roofs, roads, and pavements white. Lightening the color to the color of cement would be the equivalent of eliminating all pollution from cars for 11 years! It also would reduce the need for air conditioning, which would eliminate even more emissions.

A-House you right on that one…

But not just QB and OLine most of the starting offense is Senior Heavy this year… Alexander, LWJ, Inoke, Rego, Lane, Medeiros, Kia, Letuli, Estes, Ieru, Hisatake.

Not to mention our DLine will probably take and even bigger hit with all these Seniors…Rocky, Tufaga, Leatigaga, Fonoti, Brashton, Clore, Tua, Allen-Jones, Rink, Montgomery

Hopefully the guys behind get some game time experience this year, but dayum that’s alot of talent and experience to replace…

  120. Pauoa Boy June 13, 2009 8:26 pm

Put it this way, Davone Bess would be the only Miami receiver worth picking up in Fantasy Football…

  121. madeinhawaii June 13, 2009 9:04 pm

Yep.. next season, 2010, is the real rebuilding year. New Offense. Will need new RBs, New Defense … and a pretty tough schedule.

If Mac’s recruiting pans out, that should be the last rebuild, as each last year of eligibility senior would be backed by an up and coming ready-to-takeover underclassman.

    We shall see.

  122. al June 13, 2009 9:08 pm

as for me….i am going to enjoy this year first. i agree that we will do much better than last year.

Raphael may not like this, but Im going to say it anyway. He is one of the sweetest, most pleasant young men I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. May be mean as a snake on the field but hes just the kind you want to give a big hug to every time you see him. Im sure he doesnt want to be called sweet though!

I spoke to Vantz Singletary often before he left Buffalo for 49ers and he always asks about Raphael. Said he reminds him of himself.
