A Bulldog addition

“Bulldog?” Inoke Funaki said. “I thought they were talking about Kaimuki.”
Bulldog actually is the hybrid running back/slotback position that Funaki is expected to play during spring training.
With Greg Alexander set as the No. 1 quarterback, it was decided that a new role needed to be crafted to take advantage of Funaki’s athletic ability and knowledge of the run-and-shoot offense. Funaki has played quarterback in his first four years at UH.
For Funaki, the key will be his ability to block. Funaki said he has picked up blocking tips from Kealoha Pilares, who is moving from running back to slotback this spring.
Although Funaki was a skilled scrambler as a quarterback, “it’ll be different,” he said. “It’s not like when you’re scrambling, and everyone is more scattered out.”
As for slotback Funaki said, “I’m working on footwork, speed, cutting and catching the ball. It’s not as easy as these guys tend to make it look. You gain a lot of appreciation when you go out and do it.”
Funaki said his weight has fluctuated between 205 and 211 pounds during offseason training.
The Kahuku graduate also would welcome renaming his new job “Raider.”
“I wouldn’t complain about that,” he said, smiling.

Aaron Kia will enter his final spring training as the No. 1 left tackle.
Kia acknowledges the depth chart is written in chalk, and that he will face several challengers.
What’s more, Kia still is trying to gain back the weight he lost soon after the 2008 Hawaiβ€˜i Bowl.
“I got sick after the bowl game,” Kia said. “I dropped weight like crazy. I’ve had a hard time gaining it back.”
He said he hopes to gain five to 10 pounds this week. Spring practice starts March 30.
“I’m just happy I still have my starting spot, and (the coaches) have faith in me,” Kia said. “I’m going to produce for them the best I can with what I have.”

    Stephen..

Ive called the HNL Advertiser 3 times last week, no call back. All Im trying to do is place a 1/4 page ad in the sports section for the upcoming camps/combines!! I keep getting told someone will call me, but I’d like it to be sometime before the camps actually happen! Do you know who I can call directly? You’d think in this economy they might need a little extra business. Id appreciate it if you could get me a number – call me or email it to me if you can.

    Thanks!

I hope Funaki does well next season, but he’ll do well in life no matter his path. He’s like the kid you want your daughter to marry. If only I had a daughter… or a wife… or even a girlfriend. Yikes. Heck, is the mahu poster still after Jason? Maybe he should call me. I like to do “stuff.”
Anyways, does anyone know what ever happened to Gigi? Used to like reading her posts, even went to her blog a few times. Don’t see her on anymore.
Appreciate the spring football coverage. Aloha.

  22. Stephen Tsai March 22, 2009 8:01 am

Volleyball has the best post-event system.
Wilton talks to the team for, oh, 30 seconds. Doesn’t yell or scold or analyze. Just tells them the next practice.
    They have a team yell.
Then they meet the “aunties” to get their leis.
Then they talk to the media. OK, lately, it’s just me and Cindy Luis. And maybe a Ka Leo writer.

  23. mctruck March 22, 2009 8:06 am

I wonder if it’s too early to try to pick coach Nash’s brain to see who he has in mind as far as his two open whatchamacallits for this coming season??

  24. Stephen Tsai March 22, 2009 8:13 am

Word on the street is they’re closing in on a pretty good guard.
    We’ll see what happens.

  25. Stephen Tsai March 22, 2009 8:16 am

There’s an NCAA revision that could help teams looking to clear cap room.
If a player with at least a 2.6 GPA transfers to another school, it doesn’t cost the first school any APR departure points. That wasn’t the case before. In fact, UH lost a point when Dominic Waters transferred.
If he were on UH’s roster today and left tomorrow, no penalty.

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid March 22, 2009 8:20 am

  32. Stephen Tsai March 22, 2009 8:33 am

On Thursday, a co-worker (let’s call him “Ferd”) says to a guy (let’s call him ST): “You’re covering volleyball on Saturday, right?”
Then, a couple of hours later, “Ferd” sends out a message announcing an outing … at 7 p.m. Saturday.
So ST mentions that to another co-worker (let’s call her Princess), who says she wasn’t invited at all.
So we had a debate on which is worse: To not be invited at all or to be deliberately snubbed?
And, gee, see if we read any more stories on maybe, possibly the WAC schedule will be released in maybe, possibly, the near future.

  33. Stephen Tsai March 22, 2009 8:35 am

There’s a newspaper phrase known as “Bulldog edition,” and because “edition” sounds like “addition,” I thought … oh, ne’er mind.

But how ’bout them Dillon Panthers advancing to the semifinals?

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid March 22, 2009 8:44 am

Ferd has a nice column regarding mbb…a team that finishes 13-17 with a very weak non conference schedule with only 3 of 13 teams finishing with a winning record and none made it into the NCAA is a telling tale of how bad the team played this season. With attendance at 3,600 average (don’t know if actual or tickets issued) and revenue down, the schedule has to drawing card because the team can’t do it with its poor level of play…

Ricketts Fires One-Hit Shutout To Capture La Tech Series

RUSTON, La. – The University of Hawaiβ€˜i softball team (13-17, 2-1 WAC) captured their opening Western Athletic Conference series with a 4-0 victory over Louisiana Tech (13-13, 1-2 WAC). Stephanie Ricketts (8-5, 2-0 WAC) followed her no-hitter yesterday with another strong performance, holding La Tech hitless through the first 6-2/3 innings before giving up a single. Dara Pagaduan went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored while Audrey Andrade hit her first home run of the season to pace the β€˜Bows at the Lady Techsters Softball Complex this afternoon.

For Ricketts, it marked her sixth shut-out and 11th complete game of the season. She did not walk a batter and struck out two in the win. In the three-game series, Ricketts gave up just three hits and did not allow an earned run in 17 innings pitched.

Hawaiβ€˜i took the lead in the third inning and never looked back. Andrade led off with a solo home run over the leftfield fence. It was the fourth of Andrade’s career and first of her senior season. Then UH followed the homer with back-to-back doubles by Pagaduan and Tanisha Milca–both to the left-centerfield gap. Milca’s double drove in Pagaduan for the inning’s second run. Clare Warwick then was safe at first on an unsuccessful attempt to get Milca out at third. UH had runners at the corners but a wild pitch pushed Warwick to second with Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu at the plate. Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu hit to the rightside of the infield, but Milca was cut down at the plate by the second baseman. Later, Warwick eventually scored on an error by the catcher to push UH’s lead to 3-0.

In the fifth, Pagaduan struck again, lacing a double down the leftfield line. She tagged and advanced to third on a fly to rightfield by Milca and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Warwick to increase the β€˜Bows’ lead to 4-0.

La Tech starter Krissi Oliver (5-9, 0-2 WAC) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in five innings. She walked just one while striking out six. Meghan Krieg held the β€˜Bows off the scoreboard for the final two innings. She gave up just one hit and struck out four.

Hawaiβ€˜i finish their second roadtrip of the year with a single game against Grambling State tomorrow at 3:00 pm.

  123. roysan16 March 22, 2009 1:59 pm

Re-“I have the utmost respect for athletes that put the UH in the best possible light”.

…And conversely I have little respect for athletes that put the the UH in a negative light. With, now, two incidents involving Warrior football players in the last two years somebody, like the athletic director, head coach or the players themselves should take more of a leadership roles in awakening the subconsciousness of the players on the team in continuing and trying to preserving the good reputation of the UH…and actually when you think about it…both on and off the field. And there should be no shortage of words or expletives in correcting those that don’t. And getting this point across… shaking it out of them. Or however it’s done, putting the fear in those that aren’t obligatory of the rules and discipline, namely how they are engaging on the field and in the community. And if that doesn’t work, get rid of them, bench them or do something. Anything in stopping this growth. The sooner, the better.

For a hundred years they’ve played football up there in Manoa Valley and many players, coaches and athletic directors have done a lot of good things in putting the UH on the map, so to speak, and to propelling the program to where it is today. And they’ve done it a lawfully, dignified way, where no one player would dare do anything to tarnish the image of the school. And this precedence should be maintained.

However, now, what are we seeing? Headlines in Yahoo of UH player in trouble with the law, which comes on the heels of another player in trouble with the law last year.

And NCAA statistics showing UH last in penalty yardage. This doesn’t bold well with me, and angers me to no end. And it’s a huge turnoff, and others should let their feelings be known because voicing disapproval in someways is remedial to the players and coaches on the team.

I wonder if the head coach should be cracking the whip more in putting the players in line on an off the field. I think so. Discipline should be more of a staple. And overextended guidance should be consumed by the players. Or at least that’s what I hope is happening at UH in the wake of all this negative light.

Come on team…where’s the respect, where’s the discipline, and, rightfully one would think , they should intertwine with each other…yet we’re seeing the opposite. Let’s hope there’s fast moving changes… where the iron claw or fist catches a few of the wayward ones. And the voices of the past…or current ones gnaws on the consciousness, too, of the ones in charge.

Players, fans and all supporters from yesteryear have put their hearts and souls into the program and it’s a shame if what we’re seeing over the last couple of years continues and more and more people, even the ones here, begin to think of the Warriors as a bunch of thugs and punks. This stigmatization brought on by a few…and maybe isolated cases…and you’ll hear more and more crap about how hard it is to insulate these cases from the horses mouths. But the bottom line it has to be stopped and rules and discipline should be coveted…and there shouldn’t be any excuse not to.

Generations of players have come and gone. Many leaving their blood, sweat and tears on the field. Likewise, many fans and supporters have expended a lot of support and love for the team over the years and the bond that unites players and fans is their love for each other…and together it’s been an upward progression-clean, sportsman-like, respectful and law abiding-ascent that made the community proud of the team and players. And it should, rightfully, be kept this way. What’s evident, though, is in the last couple of years this can’t be said. And this has to change, for I hate seeing all the hard work of the players and fans of yesteryear in maintaining a favorable reputation flushed down the drain… for the improprieties on and off the field in the last couple of years has definitely taken a bite out of the past.

When I see the namesakes of philanthropists that donated to the football program on buildings, locker rooms, weight rooms, athletic complexes and fields around the UH campus I hold them in the highest regard. For I can see their love for the program…and they’re giving back to the state and school, giving more opportunities to athletes and students is so admirable and commendable is very touching to me that they donate in the way they do. And I surely wouldn’t want to see this pipeline turned off.

Yet it gets me incensed in the wake of all this negative light that darkens onto the football program on and off the field in the last couple of years–from the two players charges to undisciplined players yielding stupid penalties on the field that hopefully it doesn’t turn fans off from the program. Or worse yet, donors. However, I can’t help but think, it’s not helping either.

How this team has taken a bite out of the past negatively is a crying shame. And the people in the know, athletic director, coaches, players or caring alumni, fans and supporters should put some refinement and enlightenment back into the program so they get back on course…so they we can be fully proud of them again.

  128. Garret March 22, 2009 2:13 pm

    roysan16,

There are far, far more good stories among the Warrior roster than there are bad ones. It is sad that one out of 100+ players can have an incident and that it would get more attention than the good things that 100+ other Warriors have done…but sadly doing good isn’t considered news as much as the bad.

I’d like to thank hntkm12 for telling us about how Mana Silva and Ikaika Mahoe helped out with that clinic on the Big Island and how they served as good role models to the youth there. Unfortunately, the general public will never hear about that but they will hear about JP or the other players that get into trouble. That isn’t the coaches fault, and it generally isn’t even the media’s fault…the public seems to want to read about the bad much more than the good.

  130. Garret March 22, 2009 2:16 pm

Two proposals due this week and a contract to get finalized…so much work! Sorry I’ve been off blog so much, but this time has been crazy. It is even harder when 3 different companies are involved with my company on the various deals and when a big defense contractor comes in at the last minute asking to be included. I hate it when everything happens at once, but that seems to be the norm for work.

  131. Garret March 22, 2009 2:20 pm

The good thing is that all this work will be done before spring training begins. I’m really looking forward to following all the news once that begins!

I haven’t been posting much Warrior news because there hasn’t been much published lately, aside from what ST tells us in the blog. That will change once practices start…hopefully the OL will get sorted out, the RB situation will become clear, the WRs will be deep with options, and the whole D will complete its makeover. The depth charts that ST posts will be *very* interesting!

  132. Garret March 22, 2009 2:20 pm

    Back to work…

  133. roysan16 March 22, 2009 2:52 pm

    Brew and Garret,

All I know is that, presently, there is a negative light cast on the football team. And there’s no denying this. If for example, I spoke to the team in person, I would think they would be solicitous of my points because in a way it’s remedial. And this is my contention all along.

Sure I’m cognizant of all the good deeds that surface on the team, but sometimes telling people of what’s disapproving, like there should be better decorum on and off the field , opens their eyes. And keeps people in check. And this is the point I’m trying to get across. IMO, if players caught wind of what I wrote it would give them a prospective that 1) they’re bad actions have repercussions and effects the team and community 2) that leaders on the team should police themselves and keep each other out of trouble (by fear or fist, it doesn’t matter) 3) they have a legacy to follow, and they should be mindful of the ones ahead of them that preserved a good image for UH.

Exploiting the problem is remedial and people should remember this. And it shouldn’t be construed as embarrassing. Or the author forgetting all the other past good deeds. Again, imo.

  134. Garret March 22, 2009 3:04 pm

    roysan16,

I don’t disagree with most of what you are saying. The personal fouls, for example, made the team look bad and cost the team at least 1 win. Several of those personal fouls were by a team captain, which was not the greatest example for one of the leaders to set.

  163. Wayne O. March 22, 2009 4:58 pm

Christian Johnson hit the go ahead home run in the top of the 12th inning. His batting average going in was .153. Just goes to show you just one swing can do. The Rainbows relief pitching was fantastic by all those freshman. Good job guys!

I’m not too confident about Aaran Kia based on his performance last year. He couldn’t stop a pass rusher toward the outside and had a lot of holding penalties. He has to really step it up to keep his spot. But, we’ll have to see what Coach Shaw does in practice with these guys. God knows the offensive line needs to get a lot better because of all those sacks and penalties. The run blocking, especially in the red zone was terrible too.

I think Hawaii needs to have a couple of plays from the pistol formation.
One a running play w/ options, one a passing down, 1 a flea flicker, Funaki would be great at that. We need some versatility on offense man!

Re-Where to put Funaki? At Bulldog? Huh?

With one year of eligibility remaining, I would rather see Funaki at QB in roles that surprises the other team, and maybe at times the other team least expect him to come in. Similar to what a pinch hitter is to a baseball team, I think Funaki would add more value coming off the bench in this capacity than if he tried RB, which with one year to learn the system, I don’t see how he could be as more effective than the ones that are there now. This is no slight to Funaki as I know he’s a competitor, but I think if there were designed running plays for Funaki from the RB position or the QB position I think he’d do better in the QB position. Remembering from last year, in the empty backfield, and Inoke under center good yardage came from this set. And I don’t see why this can’t be repeated this year, instead of trying to experiment in seeing if Funaki can make it at bulldog. We know what he could do at QB in running the ball for he brings the element of diversity into the offense (QB keeper, QB draw, options, sprint outs etc.). In keeping the opposing teams having to think of the Funaki factor at QB bringing him at designated times would keep the opposing teams on their toes and have them to practice for and think about the Funaki factor..And this can be a few plays a game, but Funaki could bring the element of surprise to the QB coming off the bench when the other team least expects it …and IMO moreso of a value to the team in this capacity than if he tried bulldog. My dream play would be to see Funaki come in at QB with third and long near mid field and punting the ball expectantly which catches the opponents off guard and pins them deep.Dey yo go.

  171. homey ℞ March 22, 2009 5:48 pm

roysan16 – You may see a negative light on the Warrior football team but I don’t. For me, in this instance, one person does not spoil the bunch. If anything, last season’s actions or inaction of a person that had a good chance to shine at QB had more of a negative light.

Don’t get me wrong, what JPD is accused of is inexcusable. Let the court run it’s course.

  172. homey β„ž March 22, 2009 5:52 pm

What Funaki can do at the RB position could be similar to the type of offense Miami runs. Funaki can also be a passer out of the running back position by employing multiple shifts and confusing the D. But then again, the Warriors never run the plays I wish they would run so it’s all moot.

That’s why I like being a reclining chair coach.

I am surprised that Obama has not called either Kekoa or myself for all the questions we resolved today regarding the national well being..Pops also had a lot of input..we also resolved several questions regarding Warrior football and I am sure Coach Mac will be calling both of us soon…

whoootahhhhhh and congrats to the UH bball team. great pitching effort by the three freshman. good going road warriors.

japan hitting has been outstanding the whole series nothing spectacular just seeing ball and spreading the hits here and there. and what can you say about their pitching. UH should get some of their younging and add to the bball team. hell should look at korea for dat matter. open up the asian market, bring in revenue and possibly a future bid into the PAC 10.

Hello everyone… Peaches and I are back home. Had a very relaxing time– thought of the Tsai-kos… like sitting in a 10′ diameter hot tub talking story and overflowing it. Or in the newly expanded breakfast buffet–where the food was good @$13.95 and replenished fast enough for a blog party.

The renovated Warrior Club had a small stage for band (and karaoke certain nights) and the dance floor is still good sized. Karaoke by a equipment “provider” so the keys were good and the songs dance classics. Peaches and I shyly left–we’re not in the solo class like Liz, Pride, Esme, RK, Pam, Russ, James, A-joe, Midnight, Iwonder, etc.

Been trying for a blog cruise for a long time, but nothing economical locally yet. One night at a hotel might be feasible… Instigators wanted…? πŸ™‚

Samson was just traded to the Raiders!

Center Samson Satele’s days with the Miami Dolphins are over.

The team has traded Satele, a second-round pick in 2007 who started every game the past two seasons for Miami, to the Oakland Raiders, according to an NFL source.

Oh great…. 😈 Here’s what the Raider Head Coach has been up to lately….

Raiders coach Tom Cable didn’t join the cluster of scouts on the field at Memorial Stadium. No, he wanted a clear bird-eye’s view of Cal center Alex Mack during his Pro Day workout Wednesday….

Cable isn’t fixated on a particular size and weight, but admits the zbs lends itself to players in the 310-to-320 pound range because of the agility needed in the zbs. Mack weighed in at 307 pounds with some room to grow.

Next up on Cable’s viewing list: Stanford center Alex Fletcher, who will workout at his school’s Pro Day on Thursday.

BTW – “ZBS” = zone-blocking system, and Samson certainly fits that mode! 😯 πŸ˜€ πŸ™„

I can’t wait for the NFL schedule to come out. I am interested to see if Seattle will have a home game on Sept 13 or 14. If not, hopefully SF, Oakland or Denver has home games one of those days. That will determine what I will do between the WSU and UNLV games.

  192. Stretch March 22, 2009 6:57 pm

I am thinking about going over for the SJSU game. I think that will be it for me as far as road games. Going to TRY stay away from Nevada since I will be going to LV already.

If the Cowboys play on Monday, that might be a possibility. There will not be much time to fly to a city in time to get to the game on Sunday.

    171-homey

How I see things, and how you see things is arbitrary so my convincing you of my views is unimportant. But trust me if I went to the podium in an open forum and expressed to the coaches, players and fans of what I perceive is wrong with the team the last couple of years… and if, say, they booed me or even threw eggs at me it wouldn’t stop me from going up there again the second time and redelivering my spiel because that’s my nature, I guess. I know if less people went with the flow, and questioned why this and why that-this team would be better, the players would be better and further disciplined…and on a higher note- even this country.

  194. Garret March 22, 2009 7:34 pm

By the way, some trivia about the draft pick Miami used on Samson:

Satele, 24, was the No. 60 selection in the 2007 NFL draft – a pick gotten from New England in the Wes Welker trade.

  195. el guapo March 22, 2009 7:35 pm

roysan, unfortunately I don’t think you would be telling them something that they don’t already know. There have been many off-field incidents over the years that were extremely serious and brought some bad publicity to the team. I’m not downplaying this, just saying that this is nothing new and has always been a coach’s concern.

It’s easy for us to sit here and question what goes on, whether on-field, off-field, recruiting, hiring/firing, etc. but it’s obviously not easy to keep 125 or so people on the same page.

The media, radio, television and newspaper writers can see a pattern (off the field innuendo, on the field lack of discipline) developing but they’re not going to go across the grain and report this, for why are they going to bite off the hand that feeds them. This is easily understood. They’re no dummies..The media people calling it like it is and reporting the anomalies that go on in the program it would leave a lot a people with unanswered questions being answered, including myself from second guessing of what is going on up there. Hopefully, my point is understood to you, or to some.
