Zarkovic named National POW
sorry, was driving into town Finally able to post
Sinisa “Siki” Zarkovic, a 6-4 freshman outside hitter for No. 10 University of Hawaii, today named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men’s Division I-II National Player of the Week.
Zarkovic helped lead the Warriors to a two-match home and home sweep of then-No. 13 USC in what was a critical week for Hawaii in the MPSF standings. Against the Trojans in the first match of the weekend, the Serbian native tied a team-high with 16 kills, hit a team-best .452 and also recorded 10 digs for his third double-double of the season. In the five-set win, Zarkovic notched two of his four service aces in the deciding fifth set.
In the rematch on Sunday, the freshman smashed another 12 kills on .400 hitting to go along with his seven digs. Hawai’i currently sits ninth in the MPSF standings, just 0.5 match behind No. 11 UC Santa Barbara. This is the 17th time an athlete from Hawai’i has taken home Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week honors, with the most recent coming from Jonas Umlauft after he won it on March 12, 2011
What an honor. Congrats again.
Well deserved !! Great job Siki!!
Way to go, Siki. Great all around player and a nice guy. Congrats.
Hey Cindy, not a good excuse, could have pulled over to the side. Just kidding, thanks. Congrats, Siki.
DF, heard it on the radio first and don’t have access to blog from my phone so pulling over wouldn’t have helped 😉
Hey just wondering has anyone heard any recruiting news for the wahine? I thought we would hear more after the las vegas classic but unfortunately havent so far.
I just realized this was a different thread , for avca pow, wow, did not expect this, congrats siki.
Congrats Siki — a very nice and well-deserved honor.
Yup. Vegas Classic just ended with the local girls coming home last night. Kuikahi again played well losing to the #1 ranked club team T-Street in three in the semifinals but came back to claim third which qualified them for the Nationals as only the top three moved on.
Regular signing period for this fall starts April 17.
Hawaii signed Higgins and Taylor during early NLI in Nov. Also added Kyra Goodman and Keani Passi
The 2014 class not allowed to sign until Nov. 13
Were you expecting more signees for 2013? Don’t believe there will be. But you never know if there were be a transfer or two before fall. Not to start a rumor. Just saying that you never know.
Just curious – why is there a tournament for the women’s and mens basketball but the volleyball didn’t have one. Not that I want the volleyball to have one but just curious.
The Big West didn’t have one for volleyball. I’m not sure why other than Hawaii’s late addition to the conference created a situation where you would have had too many playing dates with a tournament. The WAC went without a tournament for a couple of years.
the other reason there’s a bball tourney is money. Fox is willing to pay to televise the basketball games. not so much for volleyball. sadly.
Don’t think it has anything to do with TV. it has to do with the number of playing dates.
besides, the Big West has never had a volleyball tournament.
but things change.
The WAC had a tournament, went away from it while the conference was in flux, went back to the tournament.
as i understood it, for volleyball, conference tournament matches are exempt from the 28 play dates limit. but i could be wrong. someone correct me if i’m wrong.
there is a Fox tv deal for the Big West basketball tournament, albeit it may just be a regional deal.
Don’t believe conference tourney dates are exempt. But I could be wrong. There used to be an exemption for the NACWA.
Cindy – it’s in the NCAA manual. 🙂 http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/D111.pdf
the conference tournaments are excluded from the 28 competition dates limit for volleyball.
thank you. As I said, I could be wrong.
no problem, Cindy. 🙂
I didn’t know either, and curiosity got the best of me! now we all know…
