Tuesday scrimmage, Vorster, Taylor
Hawaii had a closed scrimmage this morning against Nittaidai.
Castillo was on the left, Burns and Mitchem middle, Magill was used as an OH since Taylor with the beach team. Granato the other OH.
Ponce as the DS, Kahakai at Libero. Higgins the setter. no Koelsch.
Wahine got some good experience against the always energetic Japanese team. They are very quick and Wahine block had to work to track the hitters.
Former Wahine Jade Vorster has been visiting. Forgot to mention she was at beach match on Sunday. She’s here through the weekend. Will graduate in May from Liberty with her master’s in public health.
In case you missed the earlier response about Taylor and the USAV tryouts, she did not make either of the two collegiate tour teams. USAV told me Monday that all the teams have not been announced and may not happen until May.
Thanks for the update on the national team tryouts!
Forgot to mention that Manu-Olevao also played, at OH in place of Magill. Manu-Olevao did not make the trip with the beach team, is playing in Haili.
congrats to Homayun and Zalopany for being honored as players of the week!
3. mentioned that yesterday. Wahine have taken all three of the weekly honors so far
Ooh. What happened to Kendra?
Koelsch was home for spring break
If Nikki Taylor can add a little more “zing” in her shots (wrist leverage) and an improved serve Karch has to consider her. Kiraly is a good coach but wholly underestimates the value of a “wicked” consistent serve. The serve that Nikki displayed in the exhibition was “top shelf”; better than Karsta Lowe, better than Nicole Fawcett, and as good if not better than anyone else currently on the National team. (Consistency will be key.)
Jeff might ask Jade Forster to play on his SandBows team. She has a very good head on her shoulders as well as the height.
I believe that the National Teams announced so far are the “lower” teams and the higher quality players are being saved for the later announced teams.
Back to Maglio, even though she is showing great promise on the beach, that doesn’t always translate to moving to OH indoors. The passing and defense required of an OH has to be more accurate of any pass on the beach. She is staying in the middle.
But ya gotta admit; Mag’s jump serve in the exhibition looked pretty good!
Isn’t there any video on the exhibition match with Iowa State. So sad no coverage. Guess nobody wants to pay for the expense to put it on. Times like this outer island just out of luck.
Maglio’s armswing is faster with higher velocity than Castillo, Mitchem, and Granato. These are the same attributes that caused Shoji to move Emily Hartong from middle to OH after 2 yrs. Mag’s passes better than Tai Manu Olevao and is the second best blocker on the team (NT is first). Maglio and Greeley on the left with Castillo and Mitchem in the middle is an attractive lineup. (Although Kirsten Sibley is unknown.)
10. the spring exhibition has never been televised. Barely 1500 came so the interest wasn’t there either for those on Oahu.
11. Maglio is not going to the OH. She is a middle. Hartong played middle out of necessity. She moved to OH which was her natural position when they had better options at middle. Don’t think you’ll see Castillo in the middle. Burns is coming along pretty well.
