Some really good defense early, especially by Toyota. dug some very hard hots by Hartong early.
Danielson with her first two kills puts Toyota up 10-7. Adolpho into the net on a slide. It’s 11-7. TO UH.
UH stuck in a bad rotation. was 7-7. it’s now 13-7. Double sub with Higgins and Long in. now 14-7. Toyota on a 7-0 run.
Amazing play by Hartong making a dig while she had fallen back and basically sitting. Long and Vorster stuffs Danielson. Toyota still leads. 18-12

i wish ashley would get more time playing. I am shocked that she hasn’t either started or had more playing time. is there a reason for it?

From the stats I learned that Ginger Long had no kills and four hitting errors and she wasn’t even blocked. What happened? Did she keep hitting out or hitting the net? The stats don’t tell the whole story. And how did Longo get an attack error? She isn’t even supposed to attempt a spike.
I see there were lots and lots of digs. Were there lots of long rallies and what was the longest rally in terms of time or times the ball crossed the net if you know? I’m just curious.
19. a bit inconsistent at times.
I see that Shoji emptied the bench. Since the exhibition match doesn’t count, Shoji can substitute freely and give them some playing time. Also noted that Kanani didn’t play the third set. I wonder if she tired out or if Japan decided to play more reserves as the team is winning.

I know this is just an Exhibition but is the team really out there to win today or just to go through the motions. it seems dave is been putting in a lot of the non starters. I know this game doesn’t count but is the other team really that good?

30. it was more than going through the motions. But Shoji said from the beginning it was going to be an exhibition. He wasn’t going to stretch his starters after the road trip last week, no one was expecting the starters to play all three sets, especially not Hartong.
Toyota was pretty good. Hawaii was ragged with so many different players in there.
It was a good warmup for Friday to get a competitive match in before seeing Fullerton Friday.

Is Kaela Goodman injured/sick?
Just got back from the match. The professionals were too much tonight. They play at a faster paced and they have a collapse style defense. They for the first two sets would tempo change shots in mid air. I love that they play jungle ball when the play set is broken. It will not affect them to tip/dink if the play is not there. They also angle their hits to bend around blocks or add extra top spin in mid air to land in front of the defense. In the third set, I really liked Kastl’s energy. For my money, Kastl is a starter. She blocked on the left when almost all night the lefts could not touch the right side slide. She hit from the back row and got points even when the sets were a bit low. And her right side bash really surprised the Professionals. In all Toyota is just to good.
Some long, entertaining rallies in this match. Kastl had an impressive 3rd set. She was really bringing the heat. Number 1 of Toyota just wowed everyone with her kills; she can really jump and is a powerful hitter.
I know this is pointless but I wonder if the Wahine could have won against the pro Japanese team if Dave had played all his starters every set? Wonder if the match would have had a different outcome?

Kastl started slow, settled down for a very nice match.
Hawaii wasn’t going 100 percent. They never intended to Good defense both sides, the Japanese very good early. finished with 62-55 edge in digs. UH out-blocked them 8-6.

Yep I agree Kastl brings energy to the floor. She should play much more…Guaranteed she will start Sunday (omg)
39. UH probably should have won Set 2. they didn’t. They didn’t set Hartong as much as they could have on purpose.
they got what they wanted out of it. a lot of players saw the court, no injuries, good warmup for Friday.
41. Kastl will likely start Sunday, as she did the last Sunday match when Manu-Olevao didn’t play.
36. only thing I know about Goodman was she never took the warmup pants off.
42. agree on kastl as a starter this season for 4 reasons. 1. brings heat. 2. i don’t see her as being any more inconsistent than olevao. 3. can play any day of the week. 4. she’s a senior.

I too am a fan of Kastl. However, I have to go along with Shoji in starting Tai Manu-Olevao over Kastl. For one Tai is taller and is much more athletic (jumps higher and is quicker and faster). They both hit hard and both don’t often make wise hitting decisions—both get blocked a bit too much—hence their being tagged with the “inconsistent” label. However, I DO think that Kastl should get the call before Ginger Long. Kastl has more experience and has more offensive firepower. Besides she is a senior.
that Kastl is a senior may be against her in the long run. She is gone after this season. You have Long for two more years to be developed. same line of reasoning as Manu-Olevao. no question in my mind that Manu-Olevao is the better ‘athlete’. But did think Kastl played very well after some early struggles last night.
IMHO – & 2cents in… i agree with all the Kastl comments… sorry if i offend anyone but, “Ginger against taller teams won’t match up” as quoted by Coach, although an exhibition last night, it was chance for her to show what she can do, but made way too many errors — I do hope as the season progresses that Kastl becomes a starter… i think because she is a Senior she would have more to offer than “the should have been red shirt” Tai…
Sorry people but what does being a Senior got to do with having her start over an underclassman. You play your best player in that position, period!!!!!
Kastl is taller than Manu. Also, Manu also struggles as much as Kastl if not more.
Please, you supporters, or detractors, of kastl and manu-olevao, read Sec. 11.3.2.3, NCAA collegiate
volleyball rules. Perhaps then you will begin to understand why Coach Shoji plays each player, when
