Mitchem hits for over .320 for the weekend, averages JUST under a block per set, and 3 kills per set, yet barber wins it, while hitting only .216? I swear, Hawaii isn’t winning any of these awards this year.

  3. tongo October 31, 2016 11:39 am

Is it just me or does the Big West Volleyball site seems to be overly highlighting Long Beach?

  4. Ashley October 31, 2016 12:12 pm

any of LBSU makes me sick. sorry i am anti LBSU 100%

  5. blunite October 31, 2016 2:01 pm

The ranking is complementary given Hawaii’s struggles against unranked Big West teams. Another loss to LBSU and Hawaii may drop out of the rankings completely.

Coach keeps saying these are good teams but the reality is they are mediocre; yet, Hawaii’s passing and hitting has been mediocre. If coach feels this is a Final Four team where is the proof?

Indications are that coach will be happy just to be invited to the NCAA tourney. (It would explain a starting OH who can’t block let alone jump, and a libero who can’t pass.)

  6. hollycow October 31, 2016 2:14 pm

The Longest Beach, Murray showed the typical attitude by walking away from shaking hands with Irvine after match point on Gimarrilo.

  7. tongo October 31, 2016 2:21 pm

Actually, I believe volleyball announcer Chris McLachlin has said he thought the wahines were a final 8 and possibly a final 4 team this year on the OC Sport broadcast. After 33 years of calling it, I would think that he knows when there is likely a real potential, and as always, you will need some luck and favorable match ups – same as everyone else including Nebraska.

  8. Cindy Luis October 31, 2016 2:21 pm

no awards for UH this week.

    5. the rankings are 64 coaches voting. most aren’t looking at scores, let alone box scores, which I guess would indicate the “struggles” you say. they look at W L and UH has swept 7 of the Big West teams, dropped a set at Cal Poly and at home vs. UCI. lost in 5 at Long Beach State.
UH started high in the poll, fell after the first few weeks. 14-15 looks about right.

think you are being very unfair in your analysis.
UH has a libero who passes very well and the OH can jump, does block. you’d have to go and look at every play in order to make a relevant decision on blocking statistics. Most teams are heavy left-side soe left-side OHs are up against the opponent’s right side. And not all attempts are blocked, some are touched and slowed down so that team’s can run transition offense.

  9. Cindy Luis October 31, 2016 2:24 pm

    7. we (this means Chris with 33 years and myself with 36) agreed before the season started that they could go as far as last year but that was before the injuries. And, as always, it depends on the bracket.

  10. Cindy Luis October 31, 2016 2:31 pm

As for the weekly awards, you can draw your own conclusions

    week 1: UCR (2), UCSB
    week 2: Taylor Maglio; UCSB
    week 3 Beach (2), UCSB
    week 4: Taylor, Davis (2)
    week 5: Iosia, Fullerton, CSUN
    week 6: Beach (2), UCSB
week 7: Beach (2), Davis week that 49ers beat Wahine
week 8: Cal Poly, UCSB, UCR
    week 9: UCI, Davis, UCSB
    week 10: Beach, Davis, UCSB

but agree about Barber. The Beach went 1-1. but then Barber got national player of the week when Long Beach lost during the week as well.

  11. Ron October 31, 2016 3:04 pm

Is there any word on how Nikki is doing? A lot moving forward depends on her health. I still think this team has potential to go deep into the tournament.

  12. HawaiiMongoose October 31, 2016 3:17 pm

Re #9, I’ve been watching for 26 years and I was confident going into the season that the team had Final Four caliber talent, but that was with a healthy squad. The injury bug has been absolutely brutal this year.

  13. tako October 31, 2016 4:22 pm

The goal to make the NCAA tournament is very achievable. Winning this week’s game against Long Beach will go a long way. I believe they’ll do it. Hoping Nikki is okay, if not, next Wahine – step up. -Go Wahine

This post is for Tongo and Cindy, regarding the LBSU red card, so skip if you are tired of the topic.

I rewatched the red card point and just before the camera pans to the UCI server for the next point to be played, you can barely see the ref take out a yellow card from his right pocket. Split second. The camera doesn’t catch him holding it up as it panned away by then. So BG was carded right after his outburst, similar to his first yellow, and most of the delay appeared to be the refs getting on the same page about the yellow, and then the red. So Tongo, your faith in the officials was well placed. I still think the protest will be denied if it is based on harshness of the penalty. Enuf.

  15. Bleachercoach October 31, 2016 5:05 pm

After witnessing the loss at the “Pyramid”, I feel we can SWEEP the Beach!! We played pretty horribly and almost still won. The teams just need to come out with some “SWAGGER” and play with the “URGENCY” I have yet to see this year. Long Beach is very well coached by a demanding BG . I know they take GREAT PRIDE in their defense just by how the warmup drills before the match. Hawaii has better overall talent and just need to play wreckless abandon for the whole match. I predict Hawaii in 3.

  16. Hot October 31, 2016 5:16 pm

    5. It’s a little cringe-worthy during the road matches when the commentator says that Kahakai is supposedly a great libero and Shoji believes she has national team potential — and then the opposing libero ends up doing a better job.

I agree with your opinion that Kahakai isn’t a very consistent passer nor is she quick enough on defense. IMHO, Longo, Mendoza, Watanabe, Villaroman, Ilustre were better. Lee and Maeda were certainly quicker on defense.

And Shoji himself has acknowledged that Granato doesn’t jump high enough. At least not high enough to compensate for her being undersized. His reasoning for keeping her in the lineup is that she takes an “honest swing” every time. Which is sad, because even the best OHs in the world tip and dunk and drop and do placement shots when needed and not just take an “honest swing” all the time. Otherwise they’d end up like Granato constantly hitting out or into the block.

Regarding the height listings, such a big deal was made about them being measured for their accurate hieght last year. Taylor went from 6-3 to 6-4, Maglio and Mitchem from 6-2 to 6-3, Anderson from 5-5 to 5-7, etc., but somehow nobody bothered to correct Granato’s height. She’s not six feet tall.

  17. Cindy Luis October 31, 2016 5:29 pm

    16. the heights are based on measurements taken by the athletic training staff.
although Mitchem, who is closer to 6-4, wants to be listed at 6-3.
if Granato is listed at 6-0 then that’s what the measurement was. I agree with you that she isn’t but …

    couple of things
No word on Taylor out of UH. they don’t practice today so we’ll know more on Tuesday.

Although the LBS website said they were protesting the outcome of Friday’s match, spoke to the Big West today. Official said they had not received any paperwork.
    14. I am tired of it as well. it was brought up as a point of discussion and the impact it might have on the Wahine and the Big West standings.

  18. Hot October 31, 2016 5:39 pm

    17. Thanks for responding, Cindy.

I hope Taylor is healthy enough to play vs LBSU. They should rest her if needed. Health comes first.

  19. warriorfan October 31, 2016 5:53 pm

Granato may be close to 5′ 11 and they just decided to list 6 feet, like they used to with Victoria Prince who really wasn’t 6 feet tall either.

Anyway I don’t get the hate She is getting she’s still just a sophomore and is hitting .242 in conference which is a big improvement for her from preseason, she’s also hititng just .001 lower than Nikki Taylor in big west games lets give her some credit for her improvement in the league games!!!

  20. warriorfan October 31, 2016 5:58 pm

By the way Great news for the warriors getting Joe Worsley’s little big brother to commit officially. He’s probably the best libero in the 2017 class.
Now hopefully they can get Hugh Hogland and Jaylen Jasper.

  21. Ashley October 31, 2016 6:30 pm

hope Nikki is well enough to play come Friday, would sit her out of tomorrow’s practice so she can heal more.

speaking of injured players, how is Sibley doing? was her ankle sprained really bad? i actually experienced my first sprained ankle, two weeks ago. it was a very minor one but still recovering from it and learning to walk normal again, and i must say it hurt like heck, so i feel bad hearing about any player dealing with a sprained ankle or any other injury.

also what happened with Claire Marie? was she injured too? or just didn’t make the trip?

  22. darkfire35 October 31, 2016 7:56 pm

I feel for you Ashley (21.), I sprained my ankle playing racket ball and I was on crutches for over 6 weeks before I could walk again. Of course, I had to work or I wasn’t getting paid, so my recovery took longer. I hope Kirsten and Nikki will be back soon!

Claire Marie wasn’t chosen for the trip this time, he had Smith and Ross go. As Cindy has said before, I believe, Dave likes to rotate his walk-ons on the trip so everyone has a chance to see their families.
GO BOWS! Just focus like Daniel-son and you’ll take out LBSU!

  23. blunite October 31, 2016 8:14 pm

Question is when will UCI and LBSU finish their “no-contest” match? It may matter to Hawaii.

Finding a suitable date and location is always tough on short notice with unplanned events. Unless it takes place within 2 weeks both Arenas may be booked with 2 sports seasons overlapping (women’s volleyball and basketball.) It may also involve additional funding for the visiting team.

  24. Maverick October 31, 2016 8:37 pm

    19. It’s TMO the Sequel. On paper (uninjured) this is a final four team, and if you project her performance based on what we’ve seen, there is cause for concern. She has trouble against the taller teams. Explains in part why her hitting average has risen in the Big West, the other being a return to health of other players. Expectations for the starting left are high, and she is not performing like people want her to. And when people had legitimate hopes of a title this year, they zero in on who they feel is the weakest link. I guess it is a shame UH can’t play Arizona every match.

  25. rabbit ears October 31, 2016 9:54 pm

Listing Granato at 6′ is actually funny. More like 5-10″ max. Annie does look really tall out there. Same height at Nikki standing next to each other. Emily looks about a inch shorter. So the 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3 seems correct. I question Norene’s 5-11″ also maybe 5-10″. I used to be 5-8″ barely 5-7″ now. Maybe Mckenna is aging fast 🙂

  26. warriorwahine October 31, 2016 11:55 pm

alright….so to finally recap (especially since cindy likes to close threads and not reopen new ones)

previous thread 61, 64, 67, 68, 69, 71. that state champion…aint that something? elena ogilvie truly is outstanding! shoji should not pass that opportunity knocking. although only 5’9″ at her present doesnt mean she doesnt grow including a few more inches in a few years (1″ a year would make her 6′ even) and even still at 5’9″ she can be made an ‘attacking libero’ (yes liberos as it turns out can attack – as in jump behind the 3 meter and attack, though they cant overhand set over said 3 meter.) her passing and attack was so flawless like they said, ‘she can make something out of nothing.’

  27. warriorwahine November 1, 2016 12:20 am

    15. you said it, they need some swagger and more importantly URGENCY including with ‘wreckless abandon.’ they need to not play at an opponents level when said opponents plays at a lower level. like ‘ekaki ‘elua aloha; its dominate, crush, destroy not dominate, then fall asleep, go to sleep. never play like its unimportant.

also wahine can deploy some tactics too, passing an issue? then forget passing just dig it up a complete vertical and let the setter set with a pass (nice hands right?)

additionally when somebody overhand digs vertically/sets it in the front row, just hit it over in 2 like in beach, there is no reason unless the set was really sloppy that norene needs to set it again nor necessitates the setter to set every ball. run a faster unpredictable offense. (saw an example of this with texas a&m match)

finally since ‘ka-hockey’/’ha-hawkeye’ really lifts/could be less mobile and/or there is missing back row attack, create the ‘attacking libero.’ yes as it turns out the libero can jump and take a swing at the ball from the back row (i saw an example of such during the same sec volleyball game mentioned above and it was ‘normal’ resulting in a libero kill! and i thought before liberos can not attack, boy that apparently is fiction. all the refs saw it and no call made. holly mcpeak commented a libero getting a kill.)

  28. Hot November 1, 2016 6:03 am

    27. Sure, the libero can send the ball over on the third contact, but she can’t jump and spike it if it’s above the plane of the net. If what you saw in the SEC game was accurate, then it was a violation that the officials failed to call.

Before they even resort to using the libero for the back row attack (which is illegal), they have a lot of DS who can do that if needed. Ross and Guinasso are the taller ones.

  29. Cubicle1126 November 1, 2016 6:08 am

Also to add to the AVCA rankings discussion… it’s worth noting that hawaii actually gained in points/votes from the previous week, even tho they dropped a spot. The same thing happened the week before …

  30. andy November 1, 2016 7:39 am

15 and 27. I really liked last year’s Wahine team because they reminded me of a supersized version of 80’s Wahine teams — very gritty, smart, and know how to win close games. But I think a lot of those characteristics came from two of their undersized players, Manu-Olevau and McGill, who are now gone. Sadly, LBSU now reminds me more of past Wahine teams than the current team. Prior to losing last week to UCI, I think they were 5-1 in 5 set matches. And they really showed a lot of heart when upsetting UH last month. UH is now reminding me of those big Pac-10 or Big-10 teams that we used to upset.

As far as passing, I was at the CSF game last week and it seemed like the Wahine were serving way harder than CSF, yet CSF was rarely aced and really passed the hard serves well. In fact, the group behind us said after a perfect pass of an exceptionally hard serve by Nikki, “wow, they are passing everything.”

  31. tongo November 1, 2016 2:26 pm

I agree but we often forget about the high level of play in serve-receive and digging that has been typical of most Big West teams. IMO, when we go to post season, most of the opponents have the big block, like Hawaii, but they do not have the same level of serve receive and floor defense except at the highest levels.

In years past, we can expect Dave to be riding the players pretty hard from here on end to get them up to speed for post season play. Hopefully, he still has it in him to do it. He seems to be more reflective this year and less demanding – almost too nice.

  32. Cindy Luis November 1, 2016 4:14 pm

    26. i close threads after a day when starting a new one. don’t know why there is an issue. pretty much SOP for years. There have been a few times when I’ve been on vacation that the blog was closed. which i mentioned ahead of time.

No word yet on date for UCI-Beach match. Baxter still pretty close with UCI staff and said they were working on it.
Doubt if the Beach protest of the end of Friday’s match will go through. nothing to challenge. 2 yellows equal a red and a point.
The other match outcome was challengeable since the down ref didn’t allow what was a legal substitution.

    31. not seeing Shoji being nicer this season. He’s been as demanding in practice as usual. and pretty much the same in matches.

    new thread up.
