Any injuries to report?
1. only on UC Riverside. they left three players home with knees injuries, including 2 starters.
Starting for UH Granato, Mitchem, Iosia, Greeley, Taylor, Kahakai, Maglio. Sibley will be in for Greeley in the front row.
UH up 15-12 at the TTO Taylor 4-0-6
block and ace pushes it to 17-12. TO UCR
2 kills by Maglio and a UCR hitting error makes it 20-13. TO UCR
Great step out by Mitchem ends it at 25-15.
Haven’t been on here in awhile, so I might have missed this if previously discussed.
What is going on with the absence of Emma Smith? I missed the CSF match, so not sure if she made an appearance. But, she went from being a main player to non-existent.
7. nothing going on with Emma Smith. She plays when they put her in. She wasn’t what I would consider a main player. but they did use her at the end of Set 1 tonight. They ;have a lot of DSs
UCR challenging if there was a tough. It’s 3-1 at the moment
UCR wins the challenge and it’s 2-2
She was one of, if not, the first off the bench for DSs. I would consider her a main player at the beginning of the season.
Totally missed her coming on during set 1. Showed a lot of promise at the beginning and was anticipating her being a primary passing DS this year.
Block by Mitchem and it’s 9-4. TO UCR
Coach Dave made an interesting comment before the game. He said that you can be good at digging or passing but not both. Savanah does both well.
11. as mentioned, they have a lot of DSs. She played Friday, as they used all 17 available players. She did not make the road trip.
She did play more earlier. of the DSs, she’s appeared in 22 sets (prior to tonight) Anderson 39, Guinasso 19, Ponce 14,
Mitchem with 3 straight kills and it’s 13-5. TO UCR
13. I beg to differ.
Annie owns the net.
Sets to the middle much better.
Guinasso with 2 aces, second ends it 25-6.
13, 16. didn’t hear exactly what was said. Shoji has said that if Kahakai wants to play at the next level she needs to do both well. thought her digging was ahead of her passing.
Wonder who is on the travel squad to Long Beach. Now that the football program is back on its feet perhaps Shoji will take 15?
Burins for Mitchem, Higgins for Iosia to start Sec 3.
Mitchem in for Sibley on the left
21. not sure what football has to do with anything. they are limited to 14
Big West allows 15. Shoji went with 14 to save money. ( Norm Chows program was bleeding big $$ ).
Bit of jungle ball going on out there. UH up 12-6. TO UCR
Was always told it was 14. and UH has taken 13 in the past, went with 14 last week.
sorry but UH football isn’t back on its feet.
UH up 19-12. TO UCR
Big West website has 15 in the conference rules. Football deficit is a drag. 🙁
29. football a drag for a while. Castillo, Koelsch in. it’s 23-13
Shoji challenging whether Granato kill was in. I think it was
29. not going to belabor about football. they are on the right track, not on their feet yet.
surprisingly. challenge doesn’t overturn the call. it’s 23-15
UH wins 25-18
did chris mclaughlin say something ominous about wahine going red eye to csun? god forbid.
Baby G was great on post game show. What a great personality.
34. don’t know what Chris said. I do know they are leaving Wednesday afternoon. don’t think it’s the redeye
36. it was during the broadcast chris said something of the like.
good. no redeyes. especially not towards csun and the beach. its been known to be a liability.
I am worried about LBS. Brian always has good athletes and they seem to be jelling into a decent volleyball team as evidenced by their victory over UCSB in 3 sets. Playing at the Pyramid really helps LBS but I bet that Hawaii will have a couple hundred fans there to cheer on the Wahine, maybe more considering how many of the players are from the Southern Cal. area
The wahine’s returnees have such self confidence coming off last year. I don’t see them losing in the BW.
It’s nine hours of clock time to get to LA, so at best they arrive around midnight if they leave wednesday afternoon.
I admit I felt kind of bad for Riverside. They were looking pretty unhappy after that beating in the second set. They fought pretty hard in the first, but I think ran of energy by the second. And they did better in the third when Shoji subbed in the second squad. I think every player played tonight?
This is my DREAM lineup I always wanted to see at Long Beach and CSUN but I know for a fact won’t happen….
Setter: Iosia
Opp: Taylor
Left : Castillo
Middle: Mitchem/Maglio
Libero: Kahakai
DS: E.Smith
I submit height/vertical hops over under 6’0 and power. Most times when Emma is serve receiving it is 1-2-3 Bam…Yes she is human and may have a poor pass now and then, but overall her efficiency is higher than most other than Savannah and a healthy Greenly. Granato and Sibley would be great off the bench taking Emma’Smith place in the front row. I know Granato is a good power player and athlete but she also has many deficits…passing and blocking due to not having hops. Iosia can jump higher and she is a Setter..Again it is not Granato’s fault but Coaches inability to see that we need to cut down on consistent errors and putting the BEST possible people in to make the best possible chemistry at all times. This year IMO is the best overall talent and depth in all of Coach Shoji’s 40 years…We have talent, height, and a commander in chief, Iosia….If we don’t get to the Final 4 it’s not the lack of players or talent but the coach (s) to assemble the BEST 6 playing at one time to create a well-oiled machine. We definitely have the parts and don’t want to 2nd guess 40 years of coaching and I don’t go to practice to see what the coaches see. It is very EVIDENT that the fans and bloggers see…Everybody on this site is really knowledgeable..Again we are not here to dog or demean any player….Higgins and Koelsch has graciously accepted their roles…I feel for Higgins..How must she feel although she is HUMBLE after taking our team to the Final 8….So what if Granato or any player who doesn’t produce at certain areas come off the bench…Put the players in that makes things happen…if not this 2016, the year of the Giants and Talented Wahines may the team that could have brought the title back since 1987….Could have?
Annie Mitchem is the real deal!..She is coming more confident every match…She plays that MB so well…I agree she plays that better than Left, but the height factor makes her outstanding than any other player so far like Nikki…Height, Size, and Athleticism rules up front in the modern age of volleyball…I am kind of happy now that Nikki and her didn’t play against Wisconsin, Kansas St. ,Arizona etc… They will see a different team if and when we face those teams again…Then we can all say, “It was a blessing after all!” to not show the nation the Real Hawaii Team!! (Hahaha)
Didn’t get a chance to watch the match – can someone provide analysis on Annie? Sounds like she crushed the middle, but more interested in Set 3. How was she compared to Sibley on the left?
#41: Agree with you on your analysis re sitting Granato in the backrow. i think that she performs better with less load. i think that size is important in order to compete with the power 5 teams. Shoji needs to give Castillo a chance at LS just to see what she can do. if she cannot, then move mitchem to outside and leave castillo in middle.
As Cindy pointed out, Nikki is approaching 1,200 career kills. A question for you volleyball experts (of which I am not): Is is easier for a player to accumulate kills in the rally scoring era, or in the side-out era? And when did we switch to rally scoring?
Definitely side out era and era when sets went to 30, if Nikki played back then she would easily be top ten already.
Agree on baby G aka miss Disney’s awesome personality, hope disney hires her for real.
I agree with you guys in general but I have a very high opinion of Sibley . She is learning to block, she has “hops” and she has variety of shots. Castillo will never hurt you on the left because she can block but her hits are not as powerful as Granato’s or Sibleys. Once again, Smith’s passing was flawless. Granato definitely has an important role on this team but she is not a 6 rotation player. I would not move Annie from the middle after seeing how she can dominate that position.
I forgot to mention that Savannah dug everything anywhere near her and her passing was very good. The interview with Miss Guinasso was very entertaining, allowing use to see that these student-athletes have goals and dreams like everyone else. You really root for her and her wish to work for Disney someday.
Pragmatically speaking Hawaii beat the 2 weakest teams in the conference:
— MG hit .000 against CSF and .185 against UCR,
— KS labored to get her kills but came through in the clutch,
Shoji said “She’s a middle (AM) but we’re not real solid on the left side right now.” 15 matches into the season (12 more to go) and this is the reality or inconsistency: sometimes good, sometimes not so good.
Coach holds the OHs responsible for this inconsistency. Since none of the OHs are Fab 50 elites I hold the system responsible. (slow high ball sets to the outside)
Simply put, the easy way out is to blame the players; but, finding ways to make players successful is a coach’s job.
#49 Agree with you as to Granato. Dave seems determined to force feed her in the six rotations even though her overall performance is not consistent. he did the same thing last year with olevao. i like granato in the front row only if Shoji does not move Mitchem to the outside. otherwise, my lineup would be LS Mitchem and Sibley, Middles Castillo and Maglio, Opp Nikki, libero Kahakai, with Greeley in for Sibley in backrow and Smith serving for Castillo. Let Annie play all 6 rotations.

need thread up. UH at 21 in RPI
40. if they take the1240 flight, they get in just after 11 p.m.
50. Mitchem isn’t ready to play all 6 rotations.
