    Welcome to the newbies!
The future looks bright for UH Volleyball!

  2. Andy November 10, 2016 1:04 pm

I’m looking forward to attending the UCI game tonight. I wonder if any of the new signees will be there. They’re all SoCal girls, and Lakewood is especially close to Irvine.

NCAA announced its top 10 yesterday. BYU, Michigan and Missouri not in the list even though they are top 10 RPI.

Hawaii wins set 1. 25-14. Hitting for a .444 and UCI -.036. I’m asking cuz i don’t know the answer to this, is UCI a good team?

UH wins Set 2 25-13 on a Mitchem kill.

  15. Row13 November 10, 2016 5:58 pm

Really nice interview by ESPN3 with Nikki. Looked like they caught her in the hotel room. She said how it is most important to her to be the kind of teammate who lifts others up and acts as a “glue” for the team. Every time I hear Nikki speak I am impressed by how mature and thoughtful she is. Great player, great person.

  16. setaone November 10, 2016 5:58 pm

If Mitchem was healthy and played OH all year, would she be POY? I’d vote for her.

  17. setaone November 10, 2016 6:04 pm

Although Mitchem’s overall stats wouldn’t be as great as Taylor’s.

  18. Cindy Luis November 10, 2016 6:07 pm

    UH up 8-3. TO UCI

  19. Cindy Luis November 10, 2016 6:08 pm

tonight Mitchem is 11-0-19. Taylor 8-0-12.

  20. Cindy Luis November 10, 2016 6:12 pm

UH up 13-6. TO UCI. 13 blocks for the Wahine

  21. Maverick November 10, 2016 6:17 pm

    16. IMO, Taylor still has the better all around game.

That being said, Mitchem is the key to the national championship. She is the left side complement to Nikki’s right, and I think it’s been a while since the last time UH had such strong players at both pins at the same time. Annie’s high kill pct. is the biggest reason why the team has been dominating as of late. Better passing has helped too, but teams can’t focus on Taylor any longer. And Taylor doesn’t have to be the workhorse…plus her body might not last if she was.

  22. Cindy Luis November 10, 2016 6:25 pm

    UH wins 25-18.

  23. Maverick November 10, 2016 6:28 pm

UH has now held opponents under 20 points for 12 straight sets.

  24. Bleachercoach November 10, 2016 6:29 pm

We are looking very “PRIME TIME”, considering all the injuries early and still on going…I am pretty excited and I feel very good abouto our postseason. Let’s just take one game at a time and use the remaining matches to build more confidence . I love the way we are “finishing” the last couple of matches. GREAT JOB RAINBOWS!

  25. LanaiBoy November 10, 2016 6:40 pm

It seems that right now Hawaii is under-rated nationally. It is easily a top ten team and maybe even top five. The return of Annie Mitchem to full health has made a huge difference. So has the continued improvement Emily Maglio, especially on the offensive end. Mitchem is so impressive; she can leap high, is tall at 6’3″, and is one of the hardest hitters on the team.

  26. Bozo November 10, 2016 6:43 pm

Mitchem continues to give this team a post season left side. solid in the middle and emma smith looks like a good move on defense. new look takes the pressure off taylor and we look overall more balanced in our attack.

    Can’t wait for the post-season.

  27. Cindy Luis November 10, 2016 6:47 pm

Mitchem 13-0-27 .481, Taylor 11-0-15, .733. Maglio in on nine blocks, Taylor 7. Iosia with a double double 28 assists, 11 digs. Kahakai with 16 digs.
Taylor has 1301 kills, becomes 12th Wahine to reach 1300

  28. warriorfan November 10, 2016 6:49 pm

Gotta give credit to our passers, they are in a much better groove now, Savannah, Kalei and Emma making it easier on Norene and the hitters.
and Annie’s serve is becoming a bit weapon.

  29. Cindy Luis November 10, 2016 6:53 pm

true about the passing but you also have to consider the competition.

  30. Rabbit ears November 10, 2016 6:54 pm

Wow! Peaking at the right time. Stay healthy Nikki.

  31. noblesol November 10, 2016 6:55 pm

Taps for UCSB, the Hawaii win eliminates them from the conference AQ.

  32. Andy November 10, 2016 7:15 pm

Wow, that was an efficient hitting night. Okay I’ll nitpick again. As long as we’re comfortably ahead, I’d really like to see Annie gamble and practice swinging at long out of system passes instead of free-balling them over. One error wouldn’t be the end of the world!

  33. Cindy Luis November 10, 2016 7:34 pm

yes you are nit-picking. but agree that she doesn’t swing like Sibley does on those balls. but better to keep the ball alive than hit into the net.

  34. Duster November 10, 2016 7:40 pm

Nice. Took care of business with no 3rd set swoon. Way to go!

  35. Maverick November 10, 2016 7:46 pm

Competition, aside from LBSU, has been weak as of late. However, the team is playing better than they have all season. Final weekend will show us if UH is ready to dominate the better teams in the conference and go into the tourney with much-needed momentum.

  36. Cindy Luis November 10, 2016 7:50 pm

    34. a little ragged with the subs in Set 3.
    other Top 25 tonight
    12) BYU def. Gonzaga 25-16, 25-17, 19-25, 25-14
    20) Western Kentucky def. North Texas 29-27, 25-18, 25-22

  37. haleiwacrossfitter November 10, 2016 8:34 pm

    Is Shaney Lipscomb a lefty?

Annie on the left is definitely a difference maker from the first half of the season. She still has some things to get comfortable with, like hitting out of system instead of bumping, and varying her shot placement. CSUN started to figure out her spot and had a defender there. She needs to hit line or roll shots, etc. But that is just being nit picky. We have 2 official terminators on the pins this year. And with Annie being new, not much film on her yet.

  38. haleiwacrossfitter November 10, 2016 8:35 pm

Oh…and I’m glad this uc Irvine game is done. Davis is still a concern, but Irvine is truly jeckyl and hide. You never know who will show up.

  39. Volleyman November 10, 2016 8:39 pm

Wow. San Diego falls victim to Portland in 5. SD was trailing 0-2 too.

  40. Ron November 10, 2016 9:01 pm

Shaney Lipscomb is right handed who has trained and played on the rt. side. Listened to the game on radio, it sounds like we have a real battle for that second middle position and we need to keep more serves in. Also glad that Sibley got in the game. We might need her down the line. Really enjoyed the way Tiff described Annies hits.

  41. A View From Afar November 10, 2016 9:33 pm

I should be able to attend the match in Davis on Saturday.
The match with Na Wahine always draws well with a very large number of Hawaii fans.
It is a 3 day weekend, but there doesn’t seem to be other major events going on that day in Davis so not sure what the student turnout will be.

For those also attending and looking for an early/late dinner (before/after the match), these are my favorites:
    – Ohana Hawaiian BBQ, in strip mall corner of Russell Blvd & Anderson Road. This is just a block from the venue.
    – Sam’s Mediterranean Cuisine, corner of 3rd & B Streets.
    – Froggy’s Bar & Grill, corner 2nd & G Streets.
    – Dumpling House, E Street mid-block between 1st & 2nd Streets

    Go Wahine!

  42. livealoha November 10, 2016 10:36 pm

There is a rotation where Mitchem-Maglio-Taylor line up together. Whoever is serving on that rotation better ALWAYS serve in. That’s a good of a front-line and scoring/blocking line up as any team in the country.

Mitchem hits like no other player Hawaii has had before. Hawaii has had the shorter plays that can sky and hammer (Willoughby/Danielson), and the taller wire-y players that can pound (Kahumoku/Hartong), but we’ve never had a physical specimen of an outside like Mitchem before. She’s 6’3, physically strong, and can sky with the best of them. She’s what Penn State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois have thrived on. Big 10 style outsides.

  43. Maverick November 10, 2016 10:51 pm

    42. Agree on Mitchem. If we had a couple more like her, as those teams you mentioned often do, I think we would be consistently ranked in the top 7 or 8. BTW, she is the highest-rated prep volleyball ace on the team.

  44. setaone November 11, 2016 6:59 am

    42. Nice call on those players. I’ve always thought of Hartong as shorter than 6’2″ and Willoughby as taller than 5’11”.

True about Mitchem being a “big” 6’3″. Glad to see she has over come the struggles she has encountered. Cannot help but think of what could have been if she was here, healthy, as a freshman.

  45. blunite November 11, 2016 7:48 am

In this time of success coaches would do well to monitor the basics. For example,

    – Knees bent when landing will help to prevent foot and leg injuries,
    – Communication between players will help to prevent running into one another,
    – Sufficient sleep and a sensible diet helps the immune system fight off illnesses.

With the plethora of injuries/illnesses this season, players need to adhere to the basics.

  46. Cubicle1126 November 11, 2016 9:29 am

great efficient night. when you’re on the road, anytime you can take care of business quickly and not expend too much energy on the court … that’s a big bonus and advantage. travel takes a lot out of you to begin with you, so it’s good to see hawaii focused and winning in 3! especially against a team (uci) that can hurt when they’re playing well.

the blocking last night was impressive!

mitchem continues to impress. agree with much of the thoughts on here.

taylor was having just a decent night until about the 3rd set set when she got 6-packed, and then got 4 straight kills and a block … before the coaches shut her down for the night!

this mitchem/taylor 1-2 punch makes me look forward to the post-season! (but yes, first, let’s focus on the here and now, and closing out the rest of this big west season strong…)

  47. Cubicle1126 November 11, 2016 9:31 am

if only we had mitchem for 4 years … or at least the FULL 2 years she’s had with hawaii (with no injuries) …

  48. Cubicle1126 November 11, 2016 9:36 am

portland has had mixed results, but they’ve proven to be a legit threat in the wcc this year. they also knocked off byu in 5 earlier in the season …. their issue has been consistency …

san diego’s loss likely knocks them out of contention for a top 4 seed (their RPI is 5 right now). altho, that was probably an outside shot anyway. the top 4 in the RPI look solid. and if any team infiltrates the top 4, the best bet might be whoever wins the pac-12.

  49. tongo November 11, 2016 9:36 am

Wow, finally got to see in person the new lineup with Taylor, Maglio and Mitchem – so very imposing, especially the blocking. The fact that both Nikki and Annie hit at such high percentages without any errors is amazing. Also, credit Emily who really held the opposing MBs as her hitting is so lethal. Kudos to Norene for smart setting. Most importantly, I was so impressed with our backcourt – without their serve receive and passing, there is no “high octane” offense. It was an impressive showing. Only three matches left in the regular season and hoping the wahines stay focus on the things that matters – serving and receiving.

  50. Ryu November 11, 2016 10:54 am

#47-ditto. I’d really like to see Annie play six rotations against Davis on Saturday.

  51. Ashley November 11, 2016 12:31 pm

i believe Hawaii has finally found its lineup. Annie is a beast on the outside, i wish she had more years at UH.

  52. setaone November 11, 2016 12:44 pm

If Mitchem plays 6 rotations, does Greeeley still come in for Granato? I like to think that Smith provides more consistent defense than Greeley.

  53. Cindy Luis November 11, 2016 1:23 pm

  54. haleiwacrossfitter November 11, 2016 1:33 pm

#40, thanks Ron. On her photo she is signing her NLI, she is using her left hand, which got me excited. 🙂

  55. Andrew November 11, 2016 2:40 pm

It makes me sad that Mitchem is leaving after this season. She is such an explosive player that has begun to show her true potential that we knew she was capable of from the beginning. It’s a shame she spent a good chunk of her time here injured. Like others have said, imagine if she was a freshman/sophomore and we had her for another few seasons.

  56. setaone November 11, 2016 2:50 pm

Haven’t been following USC too much, but how did they fall so far this year?

  57. Cubicle1126 November 11, 2016 3:40 pm

setaone — usc is young and inexperienced this year, and they lost a lot from last year. bricio obviously the biggest loss. but they also lost an experienced middle (ogoms). both of them were seniors, but they also lost one of their starting setters (baylee johnson), who left the program during the offseason (i read posts on VT that it was due to academic issues). johnson was their best setter last year in their 6-2 offense.

big losses, and so, they are young in key positions. altho they did add freshman khalia lanier who was the #1 recruit in the nation and playing well for them. they will recover. usc always gets big time recruits.

  58. H-Man November 11, 2016 7:14 pm

That’s because they no longer have Samantha Bricio who completed her eligibility/graduated. Same for Penn St who no longer is the same without Micah Hancock, Just one player can make so much of a difference.

  59. rabbits ears November 11, 2016 7:15 pm

Annie is definitely in better shape this season compared to last. That probably accounts for some of the improved play. Of course broken pinky 2 straight years hasn’t helped.

  60. darkfire35 November 11, 2016 7:31 pm

As much as I would like to echo the sentiments of everyone here about Annie, remember that several things happened that put Annie where she is now; other than Shoji putting her there, lol. Sibley’s injury, Greeley’s slow recovery, even Castillo’s injury and Nikki being in/out. Even if Annie didn’t injure both pinkies, who knows if she would have stayed in the middle and not gone outside. But one thing is for certain, she’s peaking now and can prolly peak some more; right when the team needs her to…just before the play offs.

Hey Tongo, how was the Hawaii crowd there @ Irvine? GO BOWS!!!

  61. tongo November 12, 2016 10:21 am

Official attendance was 750 with lots of wahine fans. After awhile, you run into the same fans – some living in CA and those that come over, usually for the same matches every year. Eventually – even Tiff will recognize you and say hello.

Endured a four hour one way drive because we wanted to see Mitchem in person playing just the pin position. It was awesome and well worth it! Emily, Nikki and Annie are just so physically impressive. Near the end of set 3, Sibley came in and swung hard. Kirsten didn’t get the kills but there was fierce determination in her face. Was impressed by her attitude and says a lot about her desire to succeed.

  62. tongo November 12, 2016 12:16 pm

Watching Mitchem play the pin position reminds me of Penn State Nicole Fawcett, a 6’3″ OH who was big at the net and could really pound the ball. Some may recall her 26 kills when Penn played at Hawaii in 2005. I believe Annie actually jumps higher but Nicole may hit harder.

In either case, Nikki at OP, Emily at MH, and Annie at the OH are a totally amazing front court with all three being outstanding blockers and terminators. IMO, the best front line ever in the history of the program.

  63. Ron November 12, 2016 1:41 pm

Tongo, where do you live? When I left Orange County 16 years ago, we could make it to Cal Poly in 4 hrs. UCI in 20 mins. LBS in 40 mins, CSF in 30 mins. And the San Diego schools in about 1 hr. No need to answer, I already know that moving to Hawaii is the best thing I ever did. I enjoy your in-person assessments of what you observe.

  64. darkfire35 November 12, 2016 3:36 pm

Hey Tongo, I enjoy your in-person assessments as well. It gives us spoiled SSC fans a look overseas and how we should appreciate the SSC and all the support we have here that we take for granted. Do the girls interact with the fans after the game?
Agree on the formidable front line of Mitchem, Mags & Taylor. Although I’ve only moved back in 2009 and not watched Wahine Volleyball seriously until a few years ago (Kanani Danielson times) I can say that UH has not had such front line strength before. Imagine the other side of the net when a 5’11” outside hitter is looking across the net at them…oh my goodness…lol. GO BOWS!
