No. 8 Hawaii 3, The Beach 2
Higgins is setting in warmups, and moving along the net in drills. Though at the moment volunteer coach James Ka is setting the second side.
Looks like it’s going to be packed. Traffic backed for the University offramp before Bingham.
But of course do you think they’d plan for this by opening the arena a little early? nope. they actually didn’t open the games until after 4 p.m.
Looks like Wilson, who was playing right side after the first few matches, has been moved back to libero, meaning I guess Atkinson, who was little at 20 percent, is going to swing out there.

Thanks for all you do Cindy!! 🙂
Bahah during TV intros, when TMO is being introduced, u can see & hear Nikki yell to TMO “SMILE” lol! Go bows!
The Beach up 8-4. TO UH
1. thanks.
not a good decision by Maglio to take that serve overhand. ends up as an ace. 18-11. TO UH
LBS seems better prepared tonight.
Wahine starting off slow, they must have gone to the football game last night.
Passing is off , defense is off, setting, and no blocking.
one of the issues is they are worried about setter Hudson, who is very offensive minded.
Sure do wish Higgins was well enough to play
nice run by Hawaii behind Anderson’s serve. it’s 23-18. TO Beach
wouldn’t be surprised if Mitchem goes in for Maglio next rotation.
BG still a jerk to the R1 about the lift on his setter…he should know better by now…or not…
7. How could watching football last night affected the Wahines’ game today? Is it because they were discouraged by the Warriors’ loss?
Hawaii started off so tentative …, like they were afraid to make a mistake. I hope they finally woke up. They were so out of sync, until the last third of the set.
good rally by Hawaii but too deep of a hole to dig out of. Beach wins 25-22.
first time they’ve dropped a set this season in Big West play, first dropped set since Sept. 18 third set vs. Bakersfield
Football games end late, and I’ve noticed in years past when wahine attend they start off slow sunday matches.
Anyway hope the first set loss is a wake up call.
Awesome start this is the wahine team we all expected.
Maglio with a solo. UH up 10-3. TO Beach.
Cheee! Wahine’s finally arrived! Block party going on. Maybe took one set loss to get ticked off, go Bows!!!!
Wow, TMO and Mags!!!
15. game don’t end that late. no later than how late Friday was after a long autograph session. don’t know if the whole team went.
The Beach a little unorthodox on offense. think they were very concerned with Hudson’s attack. but they’ve done a better tracking her
During half time I was by the student section and I was standing right next to TMO & Savanah, they called Kalei G asking her where she was sitting. Don’t know who else from the team went with them. Go bows!
UH with another block. it’s 21-11 TO Beach
One other thing, most of the tape they had on the Beach had Wilson on the right, not as liboro. and Murray has missed two of the last 3 matches. Looks like they’ve adjusted fairly well.
Took about half a set for The Wahine to wake up … They’re all playing inspired volleyball at the moment. Great to see them play through some turmoil!! Let’s hope they keep it up!!
kendra playing mano y mano w hudson. wow.
Greeley still hot from Friday.
UH wins 25-12.
Crowd is loud and going crazy. I think this is the biggest crowd this yeaf. Cindy will let me when she posts the attendance.
Started slow but Clare came in to serve near the end of the first set and the momentum carried over to the second set. Hope the start the third fired up. Good to see everyone playing well.
Beach up 5-0 in Set 3. TO UH.
Passing, passing, passing.
Deja Vu all over again …
Middle attack is there.
Magill.
Nikki is having an off night.
defense is just not that good, they are letting diggable balls hit the floor. Wahine need to make a run here can’t stay behing 2-3 all set.
three kills by Barber helps the Beach take a 17-12 lead. TO UH
36, yea it’s like the UCLA game all over again for her.
Set the middles.
OHs facing double blocks. Mags had no block on her and was ready but no set.
37. wouldn’t say that. the block is creating odd angles off the deflections. just weird how momentum swings back to that side of the court. Mitchem in for Maglio.
40. they would set the middles if they could get the pass there.
For all the grief certain folks have given TMO, she is the leading OH with .312. If these posters were to be consistent, they would demand that Taylor be pulled for Castillo.
Now they can’t pass, this is a very poor showing.
Yikes, man we aren’t doing well at all this set! C’mon ladies! Feels like there isn’t any urgency in their playing right now for some reason. Lets pull ourselves together and get this!
The beach wins 25-16.
I’m not that impressed by Long Beach some of their hitters have no heat, UH is just not playing well. Hope they pick it up.
wahine need to not let the beach or hudson pull a 5-0 in set 4 and play with a lance.
We miss Higgins setting and serve right now.
maverick is having a bad day.
51. maverick is just pointing out the lack of consistency among certain posters
LBS playing great defense.
Just don’t know why they couldn’t keep the momentum from the second set. Disappointing.
maverick is bitter.
wahine letting themselves be treated like in ucla match. they need do some iron discipline to wright this.
Beach on a 4-0 run. It’s 7-4. TO UH.
it’s not completely on Taylor for an off night. Koelsch’s D sets have been off and a couple of times it’s been Kahakai who had to take the second ball. gave 49ers plenty of time to set up the block. Mitchem in for Maglio.
Can we not attack people? if you want to do that go to VT
I hate sunday matches.
Yea this is not a good match for Kendra, they need the block to come alive again to pull this off.
Luckily Kendra is a great blocker.
UH up 16-14. TO Beach
@Kimo. seriously, just play nice gee wiz. Its so catty, lets all just be civil & mature. Cindy has enough on her plate, she don’t need to freaking baby-sit u guys….
57. And the stats are starting to show some similarities with UH’s performance against UCLA. OHs all around having below-average hitting pct., one middle producing but grossly underused, other middles not set much either. Taylor having a worse night than vs. UCLA. Still have much more match to play, however.
Manu-Olevao with two kills. It’s 23-18. TO Beach
Two huge plays by Tai she has stepped it up in conference no question.
kendra w 3 K, 12 D, 8 Bs and 35 a.
on to 5. UH wains 25-21
62. thats the greatness of a big setter
67. now there is when we need the sheer agression of shar manuolevao

link for complete stats
Hope the pattern of won/loss alternateing sets is not happening here.
Darn Nikki is still off.
Magill is a blocking monster.
Magill makes it 18th block, season high. another makes it 19 and a UH 3-2 lead
UH up 6-3. TO Beach
#64. read #45. Now, that is catty.
Really good match. LBSU a little tight right now.
hmm, not sure if that was a touch or not but BG did not get the call. UH up 7-3 TO Beach.
wow, nice call by Martinez over ruling the back linesman. that was in by a foot. UH up 8-3 at the changeover.
@kimo Be the bigger person then, its like we are in h.s. all over again. Cindy, props to u for having to put up with some of the things on here!
Nikki’s serve shows up at the right time.
UH wins 15-8
Great win, they did not play well, but they still pulled it off, thanks to their big block.
it seems like no matter the talent discrepancy on paper , UH/Long beach always seems to go 4 or 5 on the island or the Pyramid ( except for those misty may years when the beach were so dominant and 2001 when Hawaii was missing starters.
Koelsch and Magill are blocking monsters, and when higgins comes back Kendra needs to keep playing front row even if she sort of struggled with location tonight her block just makes it much harder on opponents outside hitters.
kendra for pow. 3 K, 41 A, 13 D, 9 B.
na wahine shows why they are the number 1 armored team in the nation in blocks with kendra leading the hussle.
Kendra was so close to a triple double! Just a block away!
Good to have this team pushed to 5. This will help to make us better prepared for the post season.
Savanah was amazing. But so many players making plays that they did not have to rely on one player. Really good match for the wahine. They have grit.
T103. Agree with some of your points. However, there is really a subtext message here that just grates me the wrong way when posters attempt to stifle opinion that is contra to their personal holdings. Juveniles behave in that manner. It’s OK to call them out. Maverick was out of line. Stick to game commentary. He was instigating and trying to rub dirt when it was uncalled.
The last 3 times UH/LB played went to 5 games. Nov 6th they re=match at Long Beach. Tough win, gritted it out, #blockparty . Live to play another day, learn from this win and move forward and improve!
Tayler at the back for her serve and defense, and Koelsch in the front for her block and ability to dump tight sets, is the way to go. (when Tayler gets healthy of course)
I wonder if BG is argumentative with the refs on the continent..he seems to have big issues with them here, win or lose…
93. all the time.
90. I didn’t stifle opinion, I just offered my own. If that is critical to others’ views, so be it. That’s the point of a blog. But I didn’t attack anyone personally. The same cannot be said of you. Onward, this is silly now.
93. He is…he argues with everyone…sometimes I think he does it to fire up his team…
92. I agree, but Koelsch needs to work on set location…
96. I think he also does it to throw off opposing teams too. But then it is something you can pretty much count on. I also like playing against his teams.
97. they both have off matches IMO, I’d pair Koelsch up with Magill and TMO, she connects better with those two. Higgins with Taylor, Maglio and greeley.
Whatever the problem was tonight (set location/timing/ball control issues), Nikki really needs to up her game on a consistent basis. Hawaii needs to know she is reliable night in and out.
be back later. have to write
100. she was hitting over .300 prior to tonight, Nikki IS realiable. She got some key kills in the fifth.
Fun game to watch especially when Brian gets upset. He did get some bad calls but they evened out. I would agree with those who would like to see us use both setters the way warriorfan suggested. I am so glad that this was “pops” last broadcast of the year. He was embarrassing. The sophomore class is the best one we have had in a long time. All four started tonight.
With Higgins out, it’s very fortunate that we were at home for this first match. A #8 ranked team shouldn’t struggle like we did tonight. I can’t wait to see how we do on the road against Cal Poly and LBS.
So someone mention on volleytalk that since Kendra’s been a starter she averages, 1.64 blocks per set, thats crazy, that’s better than most middle blockers.
Great win. Great blocking and digging by the team. Give credit to the Beach because they came out with a great plan that neutralized Nikki and they also dug a ton of balls. For me, Tai was MVP for providing much needed leadership and rallying the team at key critical points. Koelsch had great night blocking but setting was streaky and locations were off to both the MHs and OP. Anderson serve effectively for long runs. Mitchem came in to put several balls down that helped to hold their block. Both Olivia and Emily blocked well. We need to work on our serve receive.
104. In Hawaii’s defense, they had to prep for TWO teams this week where the Beach had 5 days to prep, scout Hawai’i Friday night, and more rested than the Wahine. The Beach came ready to play with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Fortunately, the Wahine had enough to pull out the win.
#107 Totally agree. You could see it in the eyes of Beach players during the introduction – they were there to beat the wahines. The fact that both our passing and setting were off tonight says a lot about our strength – our blocking and effective serving. Our weakness remains the serve receive and the step out – both defending it and the inability to run it in order to stretch out the opponents defense.
105. This is why everyone sees more potential for Kendra over Higgins. Kendra can improve her location, Higgins can’t grow to 6′. She blocks well for someone her size, but you can’t make up for the height difference.
107. Agreed
107. The Beach did play UC Riverside Tuesday. Flew to Hawaii Friday. Did have more time to prep for UH than UH had for them since the Wahine had to play CSUN Friday.
105. think you take the blocking numbers with a grain of salt. If you jump with another player and there is a block, both players get credit even if one player never touches the ball. When Koelsch is a front row player, she is often with Magill and Greeley.
Higgins does block well for her size but as we’ve been saying, Koelsch’s advantage is her height, can do a lot more with tight passes.
105. Koelsch has had 2 BS and 17 BA in 11 sets as a starter. If you added Fullerton in since she played the majority of that it’s 3 BS and 20 BA in 14 sets.
Poor passing caused Hawaii’s 2 losses to LBSU last year; and nearly caused another loss tonight. (Same UH passers, same UH problems.) The difference tonight was UH’s block. UH shut down LBSU’s left side in the latter sets. Koelsch’s blocking made up for her inconsistent setting. (Tayler Higgins’ settting last year did not help against LBSU.)
Still. Higgins setting is much more consistent especially with the middles and Taylor. The lack of a slide for Hawaii also contributed to the Hawaii’s letup.
106. shar tai manuolevao sure was the leader she was, she showed everyone how fierce she is and played with a lance.
109. perhaps kendra can be trained to spin serve too? then that would even some odds between her and tayler. however her standing launch serve is sound and effective as far as accuracy, low risk and moderate award.
#109 You are right about the height but Kendra set location digressed and set selections were not the best tonight. Only time will tell if Kendra really improves or not – to a level where she can run the team smoothly for an entire match. At this point in the season, it is pretty risker to make changes. As others have alluded to, it makes more sense to go with Jen Carey/Margaret Vakasausau format when the situation calls for it.
sorry about double post.
na wahine really needs to work on serve receive, that set 3 5-0 serving run by the beach was abysmal to the wahine and that sort of thing ‘upends’ any team no matter where they are by postseason. there was even that dig kill by the beach and no wahine bothered to get it??
also they need to execute more step out slide manuevers, especially defend against them. that was 2 missing links, nevermind nikki having an off night.
finally, if necessary we need leader tai to use her jump/spin serve again if necessary for lack of that kine of serve. 1 is not enough, when tai initially did it from the getgo this season, it was a couple of aces before it went only errors. if the stakes are too high and accuracy is needed/shes tired or needs to cool, she may switch on the spot to her standing deep float serve (which can be applied to any server as needed). of course if necessary, tai may also ‘not start’ and instead watch and then come in leading as a mobile reserve hidden in the back corner to do a pike spike.
watching the replay, na wahine has armor too thick (#1 block right?) and kendra is no exception.
and forgot to mention tonight was also the better stronger kalei model g!
Simple analysis. Serve/receive and LBSU defense and their setting was the key.
Large percentage of our passes were not good and I’ve not seen so many bump sets.
Really think that defined set location problems and the lack of middle hitting.
Thank god for the blocking.
Great match! Beach came to play. Loved it.
Nikki looks like she is playing with some pain. When she is getting up from digging a ball, I just want to run over and tell her to stay down. I hope she can last the season.
Great match for LBSU . Hopefully Higgins is ready on the road. Kahakai is coming into her own
BG is a big crybaby. He was on the referees all night over very minor matters. However, he can coach a team and recognized that serve returns were Hawaii’s weakness. He must have called the serve to target Olevao 90% of the time over the course of the match. I was there and could see him give the server Tai’s location. Taylor’s problems with percentages were a large part due to bad location on the sets, but Kendra was trying to set from getting errant passes on the service returns. I guess that Dave feels that Tai is better returner than anyone on the bench, but I would like to see DS for Tai in backrow and letting Maglio serve. Watch her in practice and she can do the job as a server.
120. Gimmillaro has always been like this. someone said he was justified complaining on some calls but I didn’t see any that should have been overturned in favor of the beach. He did question why Maglio didn’t get called for the carry when Murray (I think) had been a few plays earlier. Thought Martinez, the up ref from the mainland, did a very good job about that. IMHO, several of the other Beach players should have been called for the carry but he let those go, as he did with Maglio. however the one called on Murray was more like palming a basketball and thrown down.
sorry but a number of times Koelsch’s sets were off and it had nothing to do with the pass. and they aren’t going to put Maglio into the serve-receive.
It is not unexpected that Nikki Taylor stats are not as good at the beginning of the season. We are in conference play. Opposing teams are going over film with a fine tooth comb to learn the tendencies of Wahine hitters, especially its stars like Taylor and Olivia Magill. Obviously, you stack your blocks against them. I don’t remember Taylor ever hitting against a single block during the match and the back row players were placed where Taylor likes to hit, forcing Taylor to try riskier shots down the line or at sharp angles. It doesn’t help when the set is off too. Sometimes a coach will take a chance and assign one blocker to a top player, like Arizona did to Lianna Sybeldon of Washington. Of course you know what happened. Sybeldon had a career night, hitting at a .731 percent clip with 19 kills.
Hawaii’s Nominations for Big West Players of the Week:
Player: Manu-Olevau
Defense: Magill
Great win for the wahine, this kind of tough matches will only make them better later on. The beach was really serving tough, thus making for harder passing, and not as accurate setting, but kudos to Kendra for setting a great victory. A win is a win. Next year should be interesting when Iosia gets here. Will Coach redshirt her if she shows that she is a better fit? or will she play? Hmm! inquiring minds want to know. I still think that despite losing Olivia and TMO, next year will be the wahines year. GO BOWS!
http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=33717
new thread up for Monday
123. some of that is true but seems the only one who was effective at digging consistently Taylor was UCLA. Her money shots are line and sharp angle. The tempo of the sets by Higgins and Koelsch are very different, especially the D sets.
Agree the block is stacked on her and that teams are doubling up on Magill as well.
