Nikki Taylor gets the Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week honor

Wow Nikki – and so well deserved. Lots of credit to the staff for effectively managing her so as to not wear her out. She looks really fresh going into post season. And kudos to the entire team – no player can achieve such success without the players around her. This is a great team with a great senior OP leading them. Nikki is arguable the best OP in the history of the program.

    Congrats Nikki!
Well deserved and a sweet Senior season parting gift!

congrats nikki! what a way to finish the regular season!

  7. Eric96822 November 22, 2016 10:17 am

Congratulations Nikki Taylor (NT)! She probably will receive Big West Player of the Year alone with an outside chance of Nele Barber (NB) getting it along with her, since they both have multiple Big West Player of the Week honors and each have a National Player of the Week honor. Nikki looks to have an edge on all-around Big West stats.
    Kills/set NT#1, NB#3
    Total kills NT#4, NB#1
    Digs/set NT#21, NB#9
    Total digs NT#33, NB#27
    Kill% NT#12, NB#14
    Blocks/set NT#3, NB#32
    Service Aces NT#1, NB#17
    Assists/set NT#44, NB#31

Important question: why do they always station super bazooka on the ewa side of the net? Most fan set on the Diamondhead side. Never could figure it out.

  9. rabbit ears November 22, 2016 12:58 pm

IMHO i think Nikki is the Best Wahine ever. I saw Kim, I saw Tee, I saw Angelica, I saw Deitre, I saw Kanani.

  10. Ron November 22, 2016 1:34 pm

I generally agree with everything you write rabbit ears and this is no exception. Nikki is the best. I am still in awe of the other ones you mentioned and I would add Emily H. ( I am not counting great setters which would be a separate category)

  11. Maverick November 22, 2016 2:28 pm

It appears that Nikki Taylor is not only taking fewer swings at the end of this season, but her hitting percentage is climbing. Mitchem is a big reason, as well as better passing and a stabilized lineup (yes, I know there have been some minor tweaks). Looking at the last seven matches, when I believe Mitchem was a full-time left, Taylor had 8.76 attempts/set and hit .310. For the first 17 matches she played, the figures are 11.26 and .271. The reasons for the lower early-season stats include playing better teams during the non-conference schedule, injuries, poor passing, younger players in the lineup, players in different roles, and multiple lineup changes. Interestingly, Taylor hasn’t had 12+ att/set since the second meeting with UCI, the match after the LBSU loss. She had 7 such matches in the first 17 of the season. All good things when the team is set to go up against bigger and stronger competition–she will be fresher, and the time off helps with healing up.

I also looked at last year too, the last seven matches, which coincidentally was played against the same 7 opponents as this year. Nikki’s stats were 10.61 att/set and .234 hitting. She had 12+ att/set in 3 of those 7 matches; she also had 3 during the first 19 matches of last year (note, she wasn’t injured at the beginning of last season). During those first 19 matches, her stats were 9.49 and .297. So she was hitting more often and less efficiently at the end of last season. It is the opposite this season.

So if you need a reason to be optimistic about UH’s tourney’s prospects, I think Nikki, and the team’s peaking, is one.

  12. tongo November 22, 2016 3:45 pm

Thank you for digging up the data and doing the scrutiny – it goes well for the wahines. With two weeks of R&R, and some fine tuning, the team will put its best foot forward with the best possible lineup that is rested and ready to go. Hoping Burns and Castillo will be ready to go. I got to admit that I still have fears of the overpowering serves that overwhelmed the team from teams like Minn. last year and from Washington many years ago.

  13. Cindy Luis November 22, 2016 3:56 pm

    7. could see it being co-players with Taylor and Barber.
    8. because of the room to shoot it.
    12. wouldn’t say they have 2 weeks of R&R. barely a week of prep.
they were off Sunday, Monday. practices Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Monday. then likely leave Monday night or Tuesday.

  14. Cindy Luis November 22, 2016 3:59 pm

    11. also think that Taylor was taking a lot of out-of-system balls, the ‘bail-us-out’ ones. agree Mitchem has taken a lot of pressure off Taylor being needed to set as much.

  15. Warriorfan November 22, 2016 5:01 pm

I hope they leave monday this time last year I think leaving tuesday was part why they were sluggish against tcu in the first round.

  16. Warriorfan November 22, 2016 5:03 pm

    Congrats to Nikki
Kim W was so great at everything (passing included) and soo dynamic hard to top her.

  17. Gossip Queen November 22, 2016 5:11 pm

Having seen TeeE also, I happen to know that she was very emphatic about three e’s in her name also. Shoji and Miller’s book would tell you who Shoji considers the best. It also helps being the tallest at 6’4.

  18. Maverick November 22, 2016 5:22 pm

    17. Answer on the best is Teee. I found excerpts of the book here:

    http://www.honolulumagazine.com/Honolulu-Magazine/November-2014/Legendary-UH-Womens-Volleyball-Coach-Dave-Shoji-Recounts-Career-Highs-and-Lows-in-New-Book/

i haven’t watched volleyball when Williams, Willoughby, & Kahuamoku played so for me to say Nikki was better than them would be unfair. i watched when Prince transferred to Hawaii to present and i must admit Nikki has by far been the most impressive in my eyes. there have been a handful of stellar players to play for Hawaii, but i never seen one player since i started following UH Volleyball to ever hit a ball from the places Nikki hits. Hawaii has produced many great players over the years, and Nikki will definitely go down as being one of the best to ever play for Hawaii. it’s a shame she is a senior already, would have loved to have a couple more years of her on the court.

  20. rabbit ears November 22, 2016 7:02 pm

Nikki has been a starter since her freshman year. Next stop (no not Zippy’s) National team, then on to the Olympics.

  21. Warriorfan November 22, 2016 7:42 pm

The US team is stacked on the right side too bad Nikki is not a left side player as they are low on those.

Hoping Nikki plays beach first in the spring .UH with Nikki will have a serious shot at the beach title.

  22. Bleachercoach November 22, 2016 7:53 pm

Congratulations Nikki!!! Well.deserved also!! It’s always GREAT to make National POW this time of the year especially when people are paying much more attention to teams and players going into postseason. This is GREAT timing for definitely making the All America team…also like someone had mentioned in an earlier blog….We might be the “most feared” unseeded team wherever we are sent! “LET’S GO BOWS!”

  23. darkfire35 November 22, 2016 8:29 pm

Congratulations Nikki!!! After last year, this is so well deserved!! I hope they see fit to put her in 1st team all American.

I wasn’t that thrilled with the Wahine line up vs UCSB. The 3 bigs of Taylor, Maglio and Mitchem weren’t in the front line for the awesome blocks. I understand the defensive strategy, but I think we lost out on a few block opprotunities.

Cindy, have some of the players influenced Dave’s decision to look at someone, like Iosia telling Dave to look at Misraje?

From an earlier blog, re: Tom Pestolesi. This guy is the real deal; humble, positive, energetic. I ran into him at the UC Irvine game, standing in line to get tickets of all things! I asked for his autograph and he said, “Me?! Looking very surprised. “You want my autograph?” Very genuine person. Too bad he can’t stay longer; a real asset to the team!

    GO BOWS!! Wherever you’re going!

  24. Cindy Luis November 22, 2016 9:22 pm

    21. Taylor hits left but has taken more reps on the right. She may or may not play beach. she told me today that she’ll see how her body is feeling after the indoor season is done and go from there.
    24. they are playing with lineups. that one rotation where mitchem was front left but in the serve-receive wasn’t good.
as for Misraje, she contacted UH. She came down to the Fullerton match and talked to the coaches. Iosia did not tell Shoji to look at her. she sent out recruiting tapes to a number of schools. USC showed interest in her as a walk-on but she said it didn’t feel like a good fit.

  25. Ron November 22, 2016 9:23 pm

Very educational and enjoyable blog today. Thanks!

  26. Cindy Luis November 22, 2016 9:31 pm

Teee initially wanted to have 4 Es in her name but the then-SID told her no. Believe it was Sue Crandall.
    18. true, that was the answer then. which was 2 years ago.don’t know if it’s changed. all he has said of Taylor is that she is right up there with the best to have played for Hawaii.

  27. Cindy Luis November 22, 2016 9:33 pm

    23. as for Pestolesi, he has brought so much to this team this year. different style of coaching. a little goofy but it keeps things loose. Enjoyed covering him as a player, now as a coach.

  28. hollycow November 22, 2016 10:04 pm

RPI help, Pepperdine beat San Diego 3-1.

  29. Bleachercoach November 22, 2016 10:15 pm

24, 27….Coach Pestolesi is a very GENUINE….He is never to busy to greet you and I live his demeanor. Hatext to see him go cause I really like him as a coach and person. I see him being an excellent HEAD COACH as well as Coach Hall…along with Lindsey Berg’s fire, I feel they would be a GREAT INDOOR staff to replace Shoji whenever he retires….

  30. warriorfan November 22, 2016 10:45 pm

I just realized the last time the wahine were in the national championship game was 20 years ago, and it was in Ohio, same state where the final four is this year. Too bad they ran into maybe the greatest volleyball player ever in Kerri Walsh.
Would love the wahine to be in Ohio the week before christmas.

  31. warriorfan November 22, 2016 10:49 pm

    28. I believe our RPI improved by two spots, so maybe we get sent to a sub regional hosted by a 12th or 13th seed instead of the 10th seed, like last year. I really hope we get put in Wisconsin or Texas, UCLA, Kansas ( if they are number 1 seeds) bracket instead of Nebraska or Minnesota’s bracket.

  32. noblesol November 23, 2016 6:09 am

    31. Agreed.

In action last night in Malibu, LMU put a good scare into BYU, losing to the Cougars in five. LMU just ran out of gas, not enough bench. Both BYU and San Diego now have recent matches where they’ve been exposed.

UCLA@UW tonight for what is likely to determine the Pac-12 Champ.

  33. tongo November 23, 2016 7:35 am

Watched the BYU vs LMU match also. LMU served the Cougars off the court in set 1&2 but step off the gas in set 3 and then ran out of gas. LMU Sarah Sponcil, a 5’10” OH and a great beach volleyball player, was amazing.

Congrats to Scott Wong and the Waves for beating USD. It will help our RPI.

  34. noblesol November 23, 2016 8:22 am

Sponcil was very good, front court and back court. Most impressive was her blocking and how effective that was against a much bigger BYU. She’s a big time talent in a modest sized frame.

  35. Maverick November 23, 2016 8:40 am

Shaney Lipscomb and Arden Misrajeā€™s respective teams advanced to the regional finals aka final fours of the the CA state volleyball championships, Div II and III, respectively. Good luck to both on Saturday.

  36. Maverick November 23, 2016 8:56 am

The RPI estimator I look at has UH at 27 today, just a hair behind #26 Florida State.

  37. oldtimer808 November 23, 2016 9:05 am

Malalo Maverick for sharing the excerpts from Dave’s book. I didn’t realize he had a book out. Tee Williams was the ultimate Terminator. Her hits came hard and fast and she could sky. I went to a few matches back in the day at Klum gym which got me hooked on Wahine volleyball. The wahines played hard nosed defensive volleyball with side outs not part of the scoring as it is today.

  38. PBnJz November 23, 2016 9:59 am

Are there any more details about this weekend’s BeachBows action? UH site says matches on Fri will run 3-6pm after a day-long beach extravaganza…? Not sure what these beach activities are, but wish matches were being played earlier so wouldn’t conflict with WBB!

  39. Cindy Luis November 23, 2016 10:07 am

    29. Pestolesi will return ti IVC where he has to stay another year to be fully vested and be able to retire. so not the next Wahine coach.
Hall’s hope is that the SandBows job will go full time and he’d like that.
    30. last time was 1996 vs. Stanford. Walsh a freshman who helped the Cardinal beat Hawaii in the SSC weeks early. A very sick Ljungqvist got blocked on the first play, her trademark slide. knew then it wasn’t going to be a good night.
    37. book out a couple of years ago, written by now retired Advertiser/Star-Advertiser sports writer Ann Miller. BTW, it’s Teee with 3 Es.

    38. conflicting schedules out from UH and PacRim peeps. see PacRimHI.com
