  1. Blunite September 3, 2016 6:22 pm

UCLA and Hawaii do very different stretching and warm-ups

  2. T103 September 3, 2016 6:45 pm

Hey, whatever happened to that lady who used to lead the band at the games, with that huge hat made of balloons??

  3. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 6:56 pm

so kendra played soccer before according to the broadcast when she kicked the ball into the air alive versus wisconsin. she would definitely be great in a ‘non-hands’ volleyball.

her number 2 is also a fitting number for her including as a type utility player – the first prime number.

  4. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 6:57 pm

    2. Gwen is still the band leader. was with the UH band at Michigan today.
Wahine wearing a retro top. the old UH logo on the sleeve, rainbow stripe on the shoulders.

  5. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 6:57 pm

    Na Leo singing tonight.

  6. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:05 pm

    Same starters as last night.

  7. Willie September 3, 2016 7:06 pm

Shud be a great matchup. Hope the Wahine diversify and don’t be too predictable with Nikki. Thought she got tired in the 3rd set last night. The Bruins got a really Big block. Need have a middle attack presence tonight. Go Bows!

    3. have mentioned Koelsch playing soccer a number of times. She’s also quite the surfer.

  10. Warrior Dave September 3, 2016 7:10 pm

    Great crowd tonight.

  11. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:13 pm

ucla loses the challenge that Maglio hit the net on the overpass. UH up 5-4

  12. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:16 pm

UH Stuffs Anderson. Wahine up 9-6. TO UCLA

  13. Don Williams September 3, 2016 7:17 pm

I like that the Men’s team is trying to get the crowd to clap for UH serves…

  14. z September 3, 2016 7:18 pm

Like the way Mags is hitting the ball tonight. Defense is flying around too.

  15. Warrior Dave September 3, 2016 7:20 pm

    What a run!!

  16. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:21 pm

UCLA has pulled to 12-10. TO UH

  17. Maverick September 3, 2016 7:23 pm

Slow start by all the OHs. Middle attack is very productive.

  18. z September 3, 2016 7:23 pm

UH with 21 digs already. Mags leading all hitters with 5 kills.

  19. Maverick September 3, 2016 7:24 pm

    18. UCLA with 15 digs. Will be a great defensive battle.

  20. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:30 pm

Wahine were up 19-15. IT’s now 19-18. TO UH.

for those of you playing at home, here is the link to live stats.

  22. kamaaina3261 September 3, 2016 7:32 pm

TV announcers commenting that Nikki’s trying too hard; hence her several hitting errors.

  23. Maverick September 3, 2016 7:32 pm

Ewww..two of UH’s OHs are hitting negative. 49 digs so far in the match, 27 for UH.

  24. HawaiiMongoose September 3, 2016 7:32 pm

Need at least some production from the left.

  25. z September 3, 2016 7:32 pm

    Nikki really struggling right now.

  26. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 7:32 pm

Just way too many unforced errors by the wahine, passing and setting have been good but too many hits into the net, out or like sibley rigtht at a solo blocker:( uh helping ucla out.

  27. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:34 pm

Shoji challenging that the ball was out.

  28. z September 3, 2016 7:35 pm

UH with 28 digs UCLA 23.

  29. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:35 pm

First time Shoji has lost a challenge this season. but Iosia with the joust. UH up 22-20

  30. z September 3, 2016 7:38 pm

Our middles carrying the team so far.

  31. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:38 pm

Guinasso serves wide. UCLA wins 25-23

  32. Brandon September 3, 2016 7:38 pm

    Taylor just playing awful

  33. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 7:39 pm

Terrible uh middles and defense and iosia good but our outsides gave too many free points to the bruins, hope they pick it up fast.

  34. HawaiiMongoose September 3, 2016 7:39 pm

Gave up 6-point and 5-point leads. Nikki with 8 errors. How does that happen?

I’m not a fan of the retro unis.

  35. Ashley September 3, 2016 7:40 pm

Hawaii threw this first set away.
doesn’t help when Nikki is pretty much non existent in the match.

  36. Maverick September 3, 2016 7:40 pm

Taylor has more hitting errors than the entire UCLA team. She’s got to calm down and focus.

  37. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 7:42 pm

tip shots from ucla being the problem.

  38. z September 3, 2016 7:43 pm

    Kalei in frint row.

  39. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:44 pm

    37. there weren’t that many tip shots. UCLA up 3-0

  40. Ashley September 3, 2016 7:44 pm

this looks worse than the Wisconsin match. lol

  41. z September 3, 2016 7:44 pm

    UCLA really sharp right now.

  42. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 7:47 pm

    40. No it doesn’t this ucla is not as close to as strong offensively.
hawaii just needs to clean up the unforced errors and they should win.

  43. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:48 pm

    40. it is no way close to Wisconsin

  44. Blunite September 3, 2016 7:50 pm

    UCLA is using fast sets

  45. Blunite September 3, 2016 7:52 pm

This is what I suggested to Shoji. Note the arc on the setter’s sets.

  46. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:53 pm

UCLA challenging whether ball hit the antenna. I don’t think it did. think it hit the tape.

  47. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:54 pm

    45. didn’t know you were helping scout.

  48. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:55 pm

    Call stands UH up 12-11

  49. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 7:56 pm

Lawlessss playing for first time this year. she has a bad back. was cleared a few hours ago.

  50. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:00 pm

Greeley had a chance to put down the overpass. couldn’t take a full swing. UCLA recovered. Bruins up 15-14 at the TTO.

  51. Blunite September 3, 2016 8:00 pm

Just trying to help :-). Shoji prefers high and wide.

  52. Ki September 3, 2016 8:00 pm

Hawaii is shooting themselves in the foot. Unforced errors are killing them.

  53. Maverick September 3, 2016 8:01 pm

UH had 41 digs last night–tonight, already 43.

  54. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:06 pm

Taylor blocked again. UCLA up 22-19. TO UH

  55. AlexM September 3, 2016 8:07 pm

    Nikki looks tired.

  56. Blunite September 3, 2016 8:09 pm

This is a philosophical battle as well. Fast offense vs high and wide traditional.

UCLA copied USC, USC copied the US national team.

  57. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:10 pm

Koelsch in as block sub. Sibley puts it down. UH closes to 22-21. TO UCLA

  58. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:11 pm

    56. hard to say who copied who or when. . no secrets in volleyball

  59. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:12 pm

Missed opportunity by Maglio. had an easy put back. looked like she wasn’t ready for it. UCLA converts. It’s 24-22. TO UH

  60. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:14 pm

Felix with the service overpass. UCLA wins 25-22

  61. Maverick September 3, 2016 8:15 pm

UH gave UCLA the first set. UCLA outplayed UH in set 2.

  62. Blunite September 3, 2016 8:16 pm

Mick Haley convinced Mike Sealy to change. Shoji is harder to convince. (Old habits die hard).

  63. AlexM September 3, 2016 8:17 pm

Hawaii looks so tight and tentative. I wonder if we’ll see lineup changes in the 3rd.

  64. Maverick September 3, 2016 8:19 pm

Middles are preventing this match from being a complete blowout. OHs are horrendous tonight.

    Middles: 14-2-29 for .414
    OHs: 16-15-67 for .015

  65. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:20 pm

61.Outplayed but Uh is still making silly errors to give away easy points.

Not sure what should be done at this point , maybe bring in smith instead of anderson/guinasso, try Ross for Sibley.

really frustrating how tight the pin hitters are playing, especially Nikki oh well.

  66. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:21 pm

    62. U dont know what you are talking about, Mick is back to moonball after going 0-3 last week.

  67. Maverick September 3, 2016 8:21 pm

Greeley should not be hitting. Nothing on her attempts tonight.

  68. HawaiiMongoose September 3, 2016 8:22 pm

UH needs better offensive options to beat an elite team. Hopefully when Mitchem returns to action she moves to OH or frees up Castillo to play OH. Neither Granato nor Sibley is the answer on the left.

  69. z September 3, 2016 8:24 pm

UH should be able to hit over Chandler. Maybe higher sets? Hit at a higher point? I’ve seen Granato hit over bigger blocks. And it should be easier for Taylor.

  70. T103 September 3, 2016 8:24 pm

Man, I wish we could or would mix
Up the sets, maybe some slides, or gap sets, get the middles involved. But then again I’m not sure if our passing is spot on where we can do that…. I hope we can figure something out and light a fire under our butts and get over that hump, we r sooooo close

  71. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:26 pm

Higgins in to set for Set 3

  72. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:26 pm

69, they have had split blocks and hit it right at chandler or out, they are struggling.

Not sure changing setter is the answer, Iosia was making plays.

  73. z September 3, 2016 8:32 pm

Granato has the line with the small blocker.

  74. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:34 pm

UH up 11-7. TO UCLA. Kahakai has been impressive.

  75. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:34 pm

    73. Really was hoping she would have an arizona like match she might not face a smaller blocker the rest of the season.

  76. Maverick September 3, 2016 8:36 pm

Agree with Kahakai. Very impressive. Maybe those who questioned her “national team potential” will re-evaluate. She has been everywhere. Middles hitting .438 and 57 digs, 17 by Kahakai, are keeping UH in this match.

  77. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:39 pm

Not sure why McKenna Ross is in the front row. Don’t see her getting set.

  78. haleiwacrossfitter September 3, 2016 8:41 pm

Higgs refused to set Ross during that front row rotation. Everywhere Ross was, she set elsewhere. Just an observation. See if it continues.

  79. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:42 pm

Taylor hits wide, UCLA leads 16-15. TO UH

  80. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:42 pm

Again our pins cant keep it in the court, Iosia had the connection going with the middles I wouldn’t have messed that up,oh well.

  81. kamaaina3261 September 3, 2016 8:42 pm

It’s so PAINFUL to see Nikki struggle tonight. Agh!

  82. z September 3, 2016 8:43 pm

    Taylor 14 kills 14 errors.

  83. Maverick September 3, 2016 8:43 pm

Taylor is way off tonight. UH jumps out a 4 point leads and now is behind again. Just like we saw in set 1.

  84. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 8:44 pm

shoji needs to abandon his taylor-made. higgins certainly aint working anymore.

  85. Blunite September 3, 2016 8:44 pm

Nikki is trying for high hands due to the double block. (High sets allow the MB to close).

  86. haleiwacrossfitter September 3, 2016 8:44 pm

They also are not utilizing any back row attack other than Nikki. Granato can do it. I see her as Tai this year as a back row pipe option.

I really want to see Annie outside when she returns. Just to see. We need an outside terminator.

  87. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:46 pm

Greeley aced twice, it’s 20-17. TO UH

  88. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:47 pm

Annie just wont be comfortable on the left IMO maybe on the right, with nikki left since Castillo is coming along and getting better.

Nightmare game for our pin hitters wow.

  89. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 8:47 pm

greely recovering shouldnt be used as ds role

  90. haleiwacrossfitter September 3, 2016 8:48 pm

Yeah, I’m not sure Higgs should be out there anymore. Iosia is just better. Period. I know he tried to change things up with Higgs, but she is not the same player from last year.

We need to develop our options. Way too much Nikki tonight, but we all saw it coming.

  91. Maverick September 3, 2016 8:48 pm

I think UH is going to get swept tonight. Other than the middles, liberos and defense in general, no one showed up. Greeley being aced twice is very uncharacteristic. I question whether the team has the mental strength to come back in set 3.

  92. haleiwacrossfitter September 3, 2016 8:49 pm

Warrior, how do you know? She played OH at Irvine. She may not, but you never know.

  93. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:50 pm

Emma should have been in earlier.

  94. haleiwacrossfitter September 3, 2016 8:50 pm

Man…ucla and Mike sealy really has our number

Here is Ross. Let’s see if any sets go her way.

  95. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:51 pm

    90. She’s the same player a freshmen is just better.

  96. Blunite September 3, 2016 8:53 pm

It may take a few more games like this for Shoji to reconsider the high and wide traditional offense. (Double blocks is the problem)

  97. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 8:53 pm

    Bruins win 25-22.

  98. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 8:53 pm

Ok no hosting again this season, oh well.

This one was ugly, better to forget about it.

  99. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 8:55 pm

shall it be said questionable or even suspect coaching from shoji tonight?

  100. haleiwacrossfitter September 3, 2016 8:56 pm

Did anybody catch that KG said during pre game she hopes to be 100% by playoffs? That’s not good.

  101. z September 3, 2016 8:56 pm

Granato had the line with the smaller block but chose to hit cross court against the bigger middles. Just couldn’t understand why.

  102. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 8:58 pm

    93. concur.

  103. Maverick September 3, 2016 8:59 pm

UH will not host a sub-regional this year. Not clear to me the team will be able to beat Washington either. Very disappointing performance from the OHs. Taylor was an error machine. Granato played as I expected against a big block–no Snuka to hit over. Sibley is a freshman, and not a top 20 recruit, so she needs more time to develop. UH needs to use its middles more–that is still a strength of the team. Most disappointing is that the team was able to put up good leads against UCLA in the first and third sets, only to see them evaporate and the team lose those sets. Very alarming.

  104. haleiwacrossfitter September 3, 2016 9:00 pm

I’m color deficient. What color was ucla’ uniform?

  105. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 9:01 pm

    100. yeah she admitted that. thats not promising at all.

  106. Warriorfan September 3, 2016 9:02 pm

Terrible day to be a UH fan today, better to just sign off and not type anything I will regret.

Only can go up from here.

hope Shoji plays emma more and goes back to Iosia starting next week. nikki won’t play that bad twice in a row.

  107. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 9:03 pm

‘(higgins) didnt even set ross once’ – lisa strand ma’a’

  108. z September 3, 2016 9:03 pm

No offense from the left side.

  109. Big Island VB fan September 3, 2016 9:05 pm

So Nikki Taylor was declared Tournament MVP despite a very low hitting percentage tonight. I guess when averaged out over all three nights, she had a high enough percentage and more kills than anyone else. UCLA attack was more balanced. Nikki was set too much tonight. Should have relied more on the middle attack. Anyway, this loss was no surprise.

  110. Maverick September 3, 2016 9:05 pm

    106. No, the team can still drop. Washington is in town next week, and UH’s first two road games to start the conference season are against UCSB (5-1) and Poly (4-2). Also, Nikki can play that bad twice in a row if she were to face another big block…luckily, Washington is three matches from now.

  111. Maverick September 3, 2016 9:06 pm

    109. I agree the loss was no surprise, although the sweep was a surprise to me.

  112. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 9:07 pm

loss was abysmal. did shoji resign with his words ‘theres so much a coach can say on motivation’?

  113. Ashley September 3, 2016 9:15 pm

a couple things that bother me.

opposing teams seem to love tip shots because Hawaii almost never tries to pick up those tip shots. you literally could see at one point all the Hawaii players freeze because no one knew who was gonna go for the ball. i thought my tv froze in that moment. lol

i saw a lot of bad passes, some by Greeley or maybe that’s just me.

Nikki was almost non existent tonight, it’s like she just couldn’t find a good rhythm to stay in.

i wasn’t expecting them to play the way they did. they honestly could have swept Ucla themselves because a lot of times they had a good lead, but really gave that up. which is also something i noticed about this team this season.

  114. Sickman Fraud September 3, 2016 9:15 pm

A loss that reflects a major shortcoming…a missing hitter on the left. Hopefully Annie is available for the Washington game…or another predictable offense and a likely outcome.

  115. Maverick September 3, 2016 9:16 pm

No liberos on all-tourney team; Kahakai had 40 digs this weekend. Interestingly, Gotterba of Pacific had 52 while MSU’s Johnson had 54 digs.

  116. Maverick September 3, 2016 9:20 pm

    114. Annie won’t be available next weekend. Maybe for the start of conference season. So expect to see another poor performance on the 11th.

UH probably falls to somewhere in the 16-20 range in the next poll.

  117. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 9:23 pm

    98. ever since they lost to k state, i dont think they would of been hosting anyways.

  118. Maverick September 3, 2016 9:25 pm

    109. Here are Nikki’s attempts to total team attempts for the weekend:

    MSU: 34/109=31%
    UOP: 41/87=47%
    UCLA: 56/140=40%
    Total: 131/336=39%

  119. Maverick September 3, 2016 9:27 pm

Well, we knew finding a replacement for Olevao was going to be a challenge. Didn’t count on injuries to Greeley, Mitchem and Taylor to make things worse. I think the focus should be on healing up, improving the left-side hitting and getting the team to gel in time for the tournament.

  120. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 9:35 pm

    113. i noticed that about the tip. usually its noreen who goes after it but of course that takes her out of setting, unless they start hitting that anyways especially via a ‘receive set’ (kill it on the second touch.) my friends wife said she likes noreens spirit since shes the one that goes after balls that would of hit the floor while everyone else stood idle.

perhaps noreen is considering to start hitting it herself if others set the ball on receive, rather than she has to re-set it again for others?

  121. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 9:39 pm

also shoji said theres nothing ‘structurally wrong’ with greeleys passing. but for betters sake. better to have her concentrate on healing and let a ds handle it, perhaps ross? shoji ought to train her to hit from back row.

  122. LanaiBoy September 3, 2016 9:42 pm

From where I sat, it seems that the line was open all night for the Hawaii outsides. But the Hawaii hitters kept going crosscourt and getting blocked or picked up. UCLA was a great defensive team last year. This year its offense picked up considerably. Reilly Buechler and Jordan Anderson improved a lot from last year in their hitting. UCLA should be one of the favorites for the Pac 12 title.

  123. AlexM September 3, 2016 9:43 pm

Nikki will be better. Her first 2 matches back, came against smaller, weaker teams. She didn’t seem to be able to adjust to hitting against a stronger team like UCLA.

Maybe Greeley should sit out and rehab her shoulder. Put Smith back there and hope that Granato/Sibley can improve.

Even with a healthy team, it would have taken a while to replace Tai and Olivia. Both were playing great at the end of the season. Granato, Sibley and Mitchem are still learning to play at this level. We should be good at the end of the BWC, but it will be rough until everyone is healthy.

  124. Ron September 3, 2016 10:00 pm

To look on the bright side, UCLA only had 8 more points than us and it was possibly our worst game of the year. We still have the potential to have a special year if everyone gets healthy. We might need to win the conference to get a bid and the Big West has some very good teams. Even if we were undefeated, the NCAA would send us to the most inconvenient place they can find anyway. I am stating that this team will in the top 4 at the end and maybe higher. We have not played a team that we can’t beat when we are at full strength . This is still our year.

  125. BeanS September 3, 2016 10:09 pm

Was at the game and we had fun, good crowd. Other then the poor performance between certain players 🙁 at least our L, S and MB showed up to play… Again I wanna say, why was Kalei even playing!? What didn’t make sense was having her in the back knowing she’s not playing well, knowing she cant hit the pipe and then having a DS sub her to server!?!?! Come on Dave…

  126. Cindy Luis September 3, 2016 10:23 pm

a couple of things before I leave the arena.

All three sets were very winnable. As most of you have stated, it was the unforced errors.

Agree that left sides had line shots but the one time Granato tried, she hit the antenna.

Thought Higgins was fine. they need to change up things. She had a solo, a BA.
Shoji said he expected Mitchem back soon. Might be this week, might be the following. That will help. She’s not going to play OH. Shoji said they will be giving Ross more reps there.

Yes, Mitchem played OH last year against UCI but that was because Taylor was out on the concussion protocol

Agree that it didn’t make sense to have Greeley in, especially the front row. that overpass that she could have put down but took a soft shot could have changed things.

As for the all-tournament team, most of the ballots were turned in before the Hawaii-UCLA match even started. I held onto mine until after Set 2. and no, didn’t vote Taylor the MOP. Did vote for the UOP libero.

Team will be back to practice Monday at 7 a.m. Shoji said he wanted 9 a.m. but the players wanted to go early.

Good night. Stay safe. Stay dry.

One positive from this loss, is that UCLA exposed a lot of weaknesses that can be addressed early in the season, before the start of conference play. Looking forward to next week.

  129. Ron September 3, 2016 10:32 pm

What rain? Its been dry and beautiful in Wailea all weekend except for the tears I shed when UCLA lost in football.

  130. blunite September 3, 2016 10:47 pm

Someone changed the way Iosia and Higgins sets the ball. They used to set lower and tighter. Now they are setting high and wide to the outside. Which is why our hitters are facing double blocks, and also why we had so many hitting errors (trying to evade the block).

Nikki Taylor tries to hit high hands against double blocks, which is why she had so many errors. The high setting works when you have terminators who can overcome the double block; otherwise, it works against you.

If the high setting continues it is questionable whether Hawaii even gets invited to the NCAAs.

  131. sharnene September 3, 2016 10:58 pm

I think high sets are good to get the hitters to jump and to hit down. If the sets are lower, they will hit into the blocks more. The sets need to be faster.

  132. Maverick September 3, 2016 10:59 pm

    127. Seriously, what kind of person does such a thing? Need attention or what?

  133. Maverick September 3, 2016 11:04 pm

    128. Those weaknesses were well-known before the UCLA match. Exception was Taylor’s poor play. Only her third match.

  134. warriorwahine September 3, 2016 11:26 pm

    119. yeah they need focus on healing up. no idea why would shoji use greeley nevermind front row, let alone as a backrow receiver. need a ds/libero there.

also the front row was jumpy at trying to get blocks or overpasses. just those two times or so lost situational awareness and didnt smack the ball down with some intensity.

  135. Bleachercoach September 4, 2016 1:24 am

My observation says Nikki had a very off nite. It seems that Sand Volleyball changes the way Maglio and Nikki hits the ball indoor. They don’t terminate straight down as often but hits alot of long shots. I feel that Mitchem or Castillo should be given an opportunity at the other outside spot. (Which probably won’t happen)…Claire played well at DS but Emma IMO is so so good not to be playing. Her passes are pin point perfect. She is so fundamentally sound and watching her footwork, she is excellent. I am glad Higgins got to play. Both setters were not the problem. Everything starts with the pass. We need to re-evaluate who is playing back there. I would sacrifice a 6 rotations player for a better back row player. I feel that not being able to perform 100% offensively is starting to mess with Greenly’s head on defense. This is not the Kalei we all know. She is the one of the best 6 rotations player we have when she is healthy. I don’t know if she continues to play will heal her labrum surgery. I think if everyone in the BW watches the film , they will see the way to beat our team is to dink over our blocks because our backnow players are so deep to run up to dig the ball. We really had a rugged preseason but I still feel we can go deep into the tourney once the “A” team is established…This is my wish list to start : Iosia, Taylor, Mitchem, Maglio, Castillo, and Kahakai (You find that next OH)….First subs: Granato, Sibley, and Emma Smith….(mix match them back row or front)….That A team because of height will take us to the other side of the Rainbow

  136. Hot September 4, 2016 2:54 am

Don’t wanna rag on Greeley because she’s doing her best and has proven to be one of UH’s most reliable six-rotation players, but it seems her injury has also affected with her back row play. She’s been aced six times and has shanked several serves. Is she so much ahead of Smith in passing that there is a need to use her even if she can’t serve? IMO, Smith can be used to pass in Greeley’s spot. They may or may not continue using an additional server for that spot, but I think Greeley should be rested for a little bit.

Granato and Sibley have not shown that they can be the consistent outlet players on the left. I don’t expect them to hit .300 every night, but hitting at least .200 would help.

Passing is very inconsistent. Maybe Smith can help with that. Kahakai is inconsistent, Greeley is not herself, Anderson can’t really be relied on to pass. Granato is so-so.

Maglio and Castillo have the potential to be good middles. They probably just need to work more and establish their connection with the setters.

Iosia is clearly talented. It’s a good thing UH has someone like Higgins who can run the team if they want a different look. Plus, Koelsch as a front row setter (since Taylor plays all around).

  137. me September 4, 2016 4:24 am

Disappointing loss, but Dave should have known the Wahine don’t have a left side terminator, so all UCLA had to do was camp out on Taylor.

And I still don’t understand the reasoning for playing Greeley, front or back row.
The more she plays, the longer it will take for her to heal. She’s trying, but not helping the team playing at less than 100 per cent.

Emma has shown she’s a very capable passer and defensive player and should be the DS and on the court.

IMO, move Castillo to the left, her natural position, and replace her with Burns, at least until Mitchem gets back. Then you can juggle the line up…..again.

    OK, enough coaching.

  138. rage777 September 4, 2016 4:27 am

I just have a question since I haven’t been able to watch a game only look at the blog for updates after it’s done: Has Norene been doing dump shots? In high school, she did quite a bit of dump shots to keep the middle blocker from straying to far outside. I’m wondering if the coaches tell her not to do them or not.

  139. Andy September 4, 2016 6:55 am

The static position of the live stream at least gives a great view of positioning that you don’t get on the telecast. Interesting to see how Higgins’ sets more often require a little adjustment by the hitters — just enough to break them from their stride. Her blocking and defense is pretty solid, though. Did the coaches mention any particular reason why they removed Norene?

  140. Hot September 4, 2016 7:27 am

Whoever is doing the stats should do a better job. Against Pacific, they had Ponce in the stat sheet even though she didn’t play. Against UCLA, they didn’t credit Koelsch’s block late in Set 3.

  141. laulauface September 4, 2016 7:37 am

Nikki was the pin that dropped Na Wahine. She clearly was in her head once her kills were either sprayed out or into the net. She was given so many sets that she just bombed on. And Granato is awful. The passing needs to be better, but with such beautiful sets, Nikki had no business hitting out. No blocks in front of her, just her very big ego.

  142. auntyz September 4, 2016 8:15 am

The arena only announced 4 of 6 of the all tournement team, who where the others?

  143. blunite September 4, 2016 8:26 am

It is disconcerting when coaches fail to properly diagnose the root of a team’s problems. For example,

    1. Hawaii’s hitters commit many errors against a good double block.

–Hawaii: Changes the hitter, but the new hitter faces the same problem.
–Root problem: The double block is impeding our hitters.
–Logical solution: Remove the double block, set faster.
–Observation: The setter is changed as a last resort; however, the new setter is also required to set the slow high and wide ball. (Because it gives the hitter ample time to make adjustments and is an easier ball to hit.)

    2. Tips are dropping, hits are landing in the back row.

–Hawaii: does nothing, expects players to get better.
–Root problem: players out of position to make the play.
–Logical solution: put players in a better position to make the play, continuously adjust defensive alignment to counter attempts to exploit open spaces.
Observation: Players are put in a particular defense where they stay. The opposition notes where the defense is positioned and puts the ball in an open spot.

  144. Not an Expert September 4, 2016 8:28 am

The older the person the harder to change a mindset and habits. Just the way it is. Very few exceptions finding one that can get out of their own normalcy.

Sealy knows Shoji’s normalcy and plans accordingly giving him the success he has over the Wahine. It maybe time for the sensei to get some advice from his former student. A teacher can learn many new things from a student which may result in adding more diversity to his offensive strategy.

  145. tongo September 4, 2016 8:34 am

Tough loss because the team had their chances if not for couple critical lapses at end of set 1 & 2. This is understandable considering the moving lineup changes. The OH positions will likely remain “under construction” for some time. I would like to see a greater focus on a middle attack as we have two good MHs in Maglio and Mitchem (once she returns). This will require outstanding in-system passing. A Kahakai and Smith back-court looked pretty solid last week.

Lastly, one of my very favorite player Greeley is clearly not recovered. There is nothing wrong with sitting it out and hoping for a medical reshirt.

  146. PBnJz September 4, 2016 8:34 am

#139, they announced all six…one each from K St and Pacific…I just don’t remember who they were…

  147. Not an Expert September 4, 2016 8:41 am

It is evident the KG is not the player she is due to her injury. She admits not being 100% according to some on this blog. If so and due to her backrow results why is Shoji still playing her.

She said she hopes to be 100% before the playoffs, wishful thinking. The injury needs to be rested and physical therapy and the correct exercises need to be priority. Who is fooling who here? The more she plays, is not what will improve her capabilities. We all know what she is capable when 100%. It is her mind that is now fighting what the body cannot do, which is causing the frustration she is experiencing resulting in the play not fit for success.

According to one’s report she stated she hopes to be 100% before playoff time.
Thus the question again is who is fooling who here or maybe should it be added is who’s mind is being fooled here?

  148. blunite September 4, 2016 9:06 am

@62. On the contrary, USC fast set all last year and Volleyball magazine has an article on this very subject. It is true that USC lost their starting setter and the passing has faltered. It is difficult to run a fast offense without the setter and the passing.

  149. blunite September 4, 2016 9:11 am

    Previous comment @66

  150. tongo September 4, 2016 9:14 am

No one is necessarily trying to fool anyone or themselves. “Stuff” happens in recovery – be real. You can tell Greeley was frustrated last night and that only comes from someone really trying. We are all wishing Kalei the very best.

  151. rabbit ears September 4, 2016 9:41 am

Not sure why Emma Smith hardly played this weekend? Was she in the doghouse?

  152. Not an Expert September 4, 2016 9:58 am

I am real, when someone says she is not 100% and she knows that her game is affected by not being 100%, who is being fooled? The coach or the player themselves many times will not admit to that fact and continue. As you said “Stuff” happens in recovery. Thus as you just so admitted she is in recovery. She is not 100% and yes I do want the best for KG.

  153. tongo September 4, 2016 10:05 am

#124 Agree with you Ron. Excited to see how it plays out and what adjustments the staff will make this coming week.

  154. hollycow September 4, 2016 10:12 am

Greeley has already played 6 matches. I have read where that is the limit for a player to qualify as a redshirt year. Anyone with any knowledge of this?
Also is a medical redshirt year request done after the season is over? Which is such the case with Ruddins of UCSB.

  155. tongo September 4, 2016 10:20 am

#149 No disrespect but never said you didn’t. Playing less than 100% healthy is commonplace. You can only try. Sometimes you can play through it and sometimes – not so.

  156. Maverick September 4, 2016 10:23 am

UH had more points, kills, attacks, aces, assists, and digs than UCLA, although by small margins. UCLA had a few more blocks than UH, and 7 fewer hitting errors. Imagine what UH could be with a left-side attack and fewer errors.

  157. Maverick September 4, 2016 10:29 am

Cindy, if you haven’t done so ready, can you please ask Shoji why he is playing Greeley when she can’t effectively hit and when he has an army of really good DSs on the team? Why not let her heal up a little and bring her back in November before the post-season? Many of us in the blog are perplexed as to the strategy behind leaving her in when she is defensive only and there are so many defensive options available.

  158. Maverick September 4, 2016 10:31 am

    154. This is a cost-benefit question, Greeley healing vs. a drop off in passing quality. I am hoping Shoji can shed some light on this situation.

  159. Cubicle1126 September 4, 2016 10:41 am

    it’s regroup time.

the ucla match exposed a bunch of weaknesses and deficits in the left side attack (poor efficiency and too much reliance on nikki), middle attack (lack of it, altho maglio stepped up last night, and castillo’s hitting numbers should have warranted more sets to her!), and passing (even the reliable passers from last season have taken a step back). to some extent, even in the blocking (the block showed up this weekend, but disappeared in stretches against ucla, and they still struggle to block the slide). even the setting (location for both setters has been an issue at times).

really though, it wasn’t just the ucla match that exposed these things. there were glimpses of these issues in the other matches this weekend against missouri st and pacific.

smith needs to see the floor. the passing is just better, at this point, when she’s in there. find a way for her to play back row for one of the left sides, b/c with nikki’s return, she’s not needed to play back row for the opposite.

do some shuffling amongst the left side attackers? granato, sibley, who can step up and hit for some efficiency, and hit smarter too. not low into the block, and be able to take advantage of the 1-on-1 situations that iosia gave them. i liked that ross was tried in set 3 against ucla, but they didn’t even set her! so that “experiment” hasn’t even really been given a chance yet, and i’m open to what ross can do there.

i would even be open to castillo being tried on the left now (and trying burns again at M2). at this point, some offense on the pins is more critical, and they can just give burns a directive to focus on blocking.

not the end of the world. ucla is a good team. and hawaii didn’t get blown out (even though getting swept leaves a bad taste in ur mouth, especially considering that hawaii nurtured leads in the first 2 sets).

this team should still look a lot different between now and the end of the season. but the upside to the potential lineup by season’s end is dependent on health. which leaves you as a fan hopeful and concerned at the same time … (still leaning toward hopeful!)

  160. hollycow September 4, 2016 10:52 am

If the 6 match qualification for a redshirt year is true, Shoji should seat Greeley now. Emma Smith is in my opinion a solid serve receive passer with Guinasso and Ross not far behind so why not, and decide later in the BW season what steps to be taken with Kalei’s position with the injury and also with the redshirt/medical redshirt decisions.

  161. tongo September 4, 2016 10:57 am

Amen brother! This is a real good team with a solid core. They are mature enough to weather the storm. The return of Annie gives the staff a lot of options. Excited to see what next week brings.

  162. hollycow September 4, 2016 10:59 am

Cubicle1126. Hopefully Annie gets the green light starting with one of the 3 matches this week and gets a start. That will give Castillo a look at the outside.

  163. Ron September 4, 2016 12:13 pm

A lot of interesting comments and observations in the blog today. I think that once Annie can play 6 rotations it will free up the substitution #’s to allow Smith or another D/S to sub for the Lt. side hitters. I like Higgins’s moxie but Iosia is a natural born player. I would keep Castillo where she is improving every game but Dave wants Annie in the middle. Dave’s the boss and he is still sharp as a tack.

  164. hollycow September 4, 2016 12:29 pm

Ron 160. I can see why Shoji wants Annie in the middle. She’s quick in the slide and hits it the hardest among the hitters and is quick to close the block with a great vertical. Once she gets in the flow by mid BW season UH will have one of the top pair of middles in D1.

  165. Maverick September 4, 2016 1:04 pm

Stanford just swept Penn St. #13 Nittany Lions are now 2-3 on the season. #14 Texas A&M and #15 UH also have three losses each.

  166. Rabbit ears September 4, 2016 1:35 pm

Agree with coaches decision to play kalei. She is a main stay on this team and a big reason for their success last season.

  167. darkfire35 September 4, 2016 3:32 pm

There were a couple of comments by the announcers during the game that frustrated me because it was working and seemingly, nothing was done to address it. First, UCLA was tipping every time Nikki was in the back row. It forced her to dive for the ball and she was out of position to do a D-set. This was happening way too often; not sure what they really could have done about it. 2nd, McCloughlin (sp) said that UCLA had watched film of everywhere Nikki hit the previous 2 matches and placed their players in those spots. That’s why Nikki wasn’t able to put much down. I believe that Dave and company saw all of this, it was just curious as to why it kept happening. I have all the faith in the coaches and the girls and I hope they come back calmer and more focused this coming weekend. GO BOWS!

  168. Astroboy September 4, 2016 3:50 pm

Hear, hear! From the comments you’d think was their worst game this season, not even close. They fought a top-notch taller and more experienced UCLA team to a near-standstill. I know the sweep and the poor performance last week made it feel like UCLA controlled the game, but the stats show otherwise. Sure, I wish we had at least gotten a set off them, and I think this team easily could have if not for some errors. Nikki was clearly tired (starts swinging for the bleachers like when she was a frosh), Kalei clearly not 100% and a lot of freshmen on the floor. Mostly I feel like we needed to start practice about three months earlier planning contingency lineups in the event of injuries which we wound up sustaining. My real worry is getting the team to gel this year while we still have Nikki.

  169. haleiwacrossfitter September 4, 2016 4:05 pm

Curious with Emma Smith, too. From going to one of the main DS from last week, to not even seeing the court this week.

I still stand by Mitchem at least try outside. Castillo is holding her own out there. Mitchem can play all the way around and add the pipe. At least try it.

How long has Renee been our trainer? I’m sure she is a great trainer, but I’m going to play Devils Advocate here and say that I’m not sure she’s a good D1 trainer. Lots of our injuries take waaaay to long to get better, and in some cases don’t at all. There is no way a shoulder surgery should take this long to heal and get strong. No way. Maybe it’s a combo of trainer and athlete being scared to push while training to get stronger.

On the flip side of that last comment, I’m excited to hear that Mitchem could be cleared to play this week or next. That’s exciting news. TRY HER ON THE LEFT!!!! 🙂

  170. hollycow September 4, 2016 4:27 pm

Shoji will not move Mitchem from the middle, that is her best and most productive position. If anything Castillo is out of position and should get a start in her most comfortable position on the left and see if she can get better production than the lefts have been doing so far. As far as Greeley’s shoulder is concerned, Chris M. mention that with the type of injury and operation that she had it takes about a year’s recovery time to get to 100%. Greeley’s operation was like 6-8 months ago.

  171. hollycow September 4, 2016 4:33 pm

    165. The first day of practice is designated by the NCAA. Usually the second week of August, about 18 days before the first serve.

  172. Maverick September 4, 2016 4:41 pm

Colorado just beat Illinois in 5, a day after beating PSU in 4. They should be ranked this week.

  173. Hot September 4, 2016 6:01 pm

    166. They used Smith as a three-rotation passer/defender for Koelsch last week. With Taylor’s return, they thought they didn’t need her anymore. Kahakai, Granato and three rotations of Greeley/three rotatioms of Sibley made up the passing formation this week.

I don’t think Mitchem should be moved to the left. Yeah, she took some swings from the left in JC, but this is DI VB. And if anyone remembers last year when she was healthy, she didn’t exactly put up All-America numbers in her natural position.

  174. Maverick September 4, 2016 6:44 pm

    173. Technically, no one other than Taylor and Magill put up All-American numbers, so the critique fails to distinguish the players. In any case, having Castillo or Mitchem on the outside will be an upgrade, so whoever is not the better middle should be moved to the left, IMO.

  175. Maverick September 4, 2016 6:57 pm

    169. Does a trainer have the expertise to accelerate the healing of a surgically-repaired finger or shoulder? I would think a trained physician has that expertise, not a team trainer. Don’t team trainers handle the relatively minor issues like sprains, scrapes, bruises, muscle stiffness, and the like?

Also, when you say, “Lots of our injuries take waaaay to [sic] long to get better, and in some cases don’t at all”, can you provide five examples? If there are lots, five should be easy to identify (Greeley’s doesn’t count as her injury takes longer to fully heal than the elapsed time since she got surgery, per other sources).

If a person is going to question someone’s competency in a public forum, then I think we should see what data supports it. I want to avoid speculation or supposition so that a person’s reputation isn’t tarnished unnecessarily.

  176. tako September 4, 2016 7:27 pm

Bottom line, allow the medical experts to do their thing… I am confident that the trainers and doctors that are treating our athletes are assuring their health and safety as a priority.

With everything being said, IMO, it speaks volumes to the caliber of Nikki and how fortunate we are to have her.

Geez give the team a break, let’s discuss at the end of the season when everything is said and done, currently, they are a work in progress. They are graduating only two scholarship players.

  177. hollycow September 4, 2016 9:28 pm

175 Maverick, I concur with your thoughts on Renee. I didn’t say anything about it to avoid confrontation to comments way out of line about her responsibilities and skills.

  178. haleiwacrossfitter September 4, 2016 9:43 pm

Not trying to tarnish her rep, just wondering if she has the experience for a D1 program. I don’t know, which is why I was asking.

“Lots” can be interpreted differently. Lots could be a literal “lots” or it could be just in relative. When I think of lots, I think of 2009 Amber Kaufman and her post season injury. I think of hewitt’s back problems. Taylor’s ankle last year, Nikki’s on going problems with her right shoulder, left shoulder, knees. And, yes I count KG and her shoulder because I had the same operation. I was lifting heavy weight over my head in 5-6 months. I don’t know how long she’s been our trainer.

And people need to stop making a bigger deal of this comment than it is. I’m not attacking or blaming her. Just wondering if she has trained and developed a D1 program before. A PT trainer your family dr refers you to is not a a D1 type trainer. I think you need to have dealt with sports injuries at this level and know what to do and get them ready to get on the field or court faster than a normal person who does not compete at this level and is just doing therapy to get stronger at daily life skills. Not for D1 action. There is a difference.

If she has experience, then great, but if she doesn’t, than its just good to know. Because her training experience does play a critical role in a D1 program and its athletes.

I’m sure she’s a great trainer. Don’t make my question or comment into a personal attack towards her. It wasn’t.

  179. haleiwacrossfitter September 4, 2016 9:45 pm

And it was meant as a devils advocate comment.

  180. haleiwacrossfitter September 4, 2016 9:51 pm

And Cindy, I apologize if those comments were taken out of context of my meaning from them.

My lost post is the last of me explaining it and I won’t go on and on with it with unnecessary back and forth banter.
