  2. tongo November 12, 2016 4:45 pm

Ron, it usually just takes a little over 2 hrs but this past Friday was one of those days – even on a HOV lane. Been to every opponents gym except Davis.

Darkfire, we usually always get the opponent gym early but we are the very first to bag it out due to our drive home. So, we don’t know about any interaction other than the fact that the So. CA based players always have lots of family and friends. Also cool to see old former players at matches.

For us old dogs, wahine volleyball is our passion and it is fun. Have met many wahine fans now living/retired in So. CA. One thing I am most impressed about is the dedication of the families of the players following their daughters up and down the coast – especially those families who are based in Hawaii and make every trip. What wonderful and incredible parents!

Sounds like there are some goofs in the stands today.

  18. Astroboy November 12, 2016 5:51 pm

Yes, I just heard the announcers chastise someone for an air horn. Can’t tell, I assume the person yelling at the players is sitting right next to the mic.

  19. Cindy Luis November 12, 2016 5:52 pm

Granato with the kill UH up 18-13. TO UCD

  21. Cindy Luis November 12, 2016 6:00 pm

Taylor ends it 25-19, 21 straight sets and 14 under 20.

  22. Volleyman November 12, 2016 6:05 pm

Lol. Bolko, Davis’ Libero, apparently has a block according to the live stats.

  23. tongo November 12, 2016 6:09 pm

Yeah, watching too on BW TV and heard the air horn go off just when wahines were serving – and all that shouting out of the first name of our players just before they serve. One in particular that was particularly appalling was the one saying something like “Emily, watch out for the ball behind you” just as Emily was serving.

  30. Big Island VB Fan November 12, 2016 6:44 pm

Now that Dave Shoji needs only one more win to secure his 1,200th victory he can celebrate it on Senior’s Night.

My question is this: Since he stated that he wasn’t going to coach into his seventies, and he’ll be 70 this December, why doesn’t he announce his retirement so he receive recognition and ovations for his 42 years of service on Senior’s night? This would be such an apt time to retire, three of his four seniors are from Hawaii, two of his seniors All American candidates, two of his staff are also going to be gone, Berg and Pestolisi and he can ride into the sunset with his 1,200 victories. This will give ample opportunities to find a new coach and the new coach to select new assistants. If I had only known in advance, I would have traveled from the Big Island for this special occasion. Glad I was on hand to celebrate the occasion of his 1,000th victory in the arena. That was so special and memorable. I know that Dave Shoji is shy of gala celebrations on his behalf, but it would have been nice to give him an unforgettable sendoff.

  31. noblesol November 12, 2016 6:45 pm

Taps for Cal Poly, the Hawaii win eliminates them from the conference AQ.

    LBSU swept CSUN…

  33. T103 November 12, 2016 6:53 pm

    Wait
What? Is that speculation that berg isn’t gonna be there and she’s leaving ?

  34. Ron November 12, 2016 6:58 pm

I noticed that Emma Smith is getting more floor time. This is a good thing. Our team reminds me of the old saying, “If the right one doesn’t get ya then the left one will.” Maybe Ali said it first but it is true today when you play the Wahine. except we could also add “fear our middles”. It is truly a joy to watch Nikki , Annie and the rest of this talented team play. Next week will be a true test in that UCSB has really improved and Cal Poly has several very good players.

  35. noblesol November 12, 2016 7:13 pm

UCSB is without Chanel Hoffman this weekend. Announcers yesterday mentioned they thought she might be out for the year with an achilles injury. UCSB lost a set to Fullerton at home yesterday, and Riverside is taking them to a fifth set tonight. Cal Poly is the match that Hawaii most needs to focus on next week.

  36. jmy November 12, 2016 7:16 pm

    UCLA wins it in 5…

  37. jmy November 12, 2016 7:23 pm

    UCR won it…

  38. Cindy Luis November 12, 2016 8:30 pm

    30. he has said that WHEN he retires, he doesn’t want to make it a huge deal. didn’t want to do it before or during a season, didn’t want to have a ‘farewell tour.’
He has said that as long as he enjoys it, he’ll coach.
Not sure why you are pushing him into sunset.

    33. Berg is on a one-year contract. Doesn’t mean it can’t be renewed. It was always going to be one season for Pestolesi. Has IVC to go back to in spring.

  39. Cindy Luis November 12, 2016 8:34 pm

    36. UCLA wins both matches with Stanford this season, 3-1 in LA, 3-2 on The Farm.
    tonight it was 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-11.

  40. tongo November 12, 2016 8:48 pm

Wow, so very sorry to hear about UCSB’s Huffman. In our first meeting with the Gauchos at the Thunderdome, their super freshman Lindsey Ruddins was injured and did not play – leaving it all up to Huffman who fought so hard while limping about in her PCL brace. There was absolutely no chance for Gauchos to win but Huffman kept on fighting. She is such a stud.

So, I agree, Cal Poly will likely be the one to watch next week.

  41. darkfire35 November 12, 2016 9:09 pm

Ron, agree wholeheartedly. Based on Tiff’s commentary, Emma was doing a bang up job passing. I believe she, Kahakai and Greeley are the reasons why we’ve had a “high octane” offense. Let’s not forget that we have started to establish (slowly) an ominous and sometimes deceiving pipe set with Nikki & Annie. That was the complete offense that the Wahine showed against LBSU. They had a hard time figuring where the ball was going to be coming from next. Between the slide/D set combos, back row quick, 3-1 set, etc, the Wahine have been firing on all cylinders. GO BOWS!

  42. warriorwahine November 12, 2016 10:02 pm

    40 previous thread.

didnt notice this earlier to address this. shaney lipscomb is right handed? photo does show she signed her nli left handed. unless thats supposed to be a mirror image or perhaps she is ambidextrous or dual handed (like me :D)

that said, cindy whens the last time hawai’i had a lefty, cant recall?

  44. Setaone November 13, 2016 8:01 am

Would someone be able to explain what happened in the UCI/LBSU match that needs to be replayed? Not the red card match, the first one.

Keep reading that it was a substitute misapplication rule against UCI. Did UCI protest the match (which makes sense, since why would the Beach protest a win)?

  45. Connor November 13, 2016 8:05 am

Why did maglio get so few swings? Was passing erratic?

Also granato did not have good game stat wise. Was she going against big block or was it her usual inconsistency.

  46. Ron November 13, 2016 10:15 am

Granato did not look as bad as the stats. showed. She has a good serve and her defense on the dinks was satisfactory. Hitting was inconsistent. I think Sibley would be a better choise to have on the court but I have to admit that Granato is improving in my opinion. I would also go with Castillo over Burns but it is very close.

  47. Cubicle1126 November 13, 2016 10:40 am

connor — in part, the passing was hot and cold last night. the setting was a little inconsistent too. but maglio did well with what looks she got … imo

  48. Cubicle1126 November 13, 2016 10:42 am

setaone — in the article today, there’s a brief recap of the disputed match b/w lbsu/uci from 9/24:

“No date has been set for the replay of the UC Irvine-Long Beach State match that has created an imbalance in the standings. The Sept. 24 match between the Anteaters and 49ers has been ruled a no contest after the protest by UCI was upheld by the NCAA. The match, originally won by Long Beach State in five, will be restarted from the point of the protest, which was late in Set 2. The protest was a result of misapplication of a player substitution rule against UC Irvine.”

  49. Cubicle1126 November 13, 2016 10:54 am

good week for the wahine … on the road, 2 matches, 2 wins in sweeps. this starting group is getting more and more comfortable with each other. 2 more matches at home against teams (cal poly, ucsb) who are probably itching to player a spoiler role.

unfortunate that gabby hoffman may not be available for ucsb. this opens the door for hawaii. but ucsb is still dangerous with ruddins back.

cal poly too played hawaii tough when hawaii was there earlier in the season.

hawaii needs to continue the steady, efficient play …

  50. VIVA November 13, 2016 11:12 am

I hope to see Berg back!

  51. hollycow November 13, 2016 1:21 pm

    47. Ron, I’m a stats person, and looking at the BW only stats, Granato is hitting .247 vice Sibley’s .191, but of course with many more swings since she’s (Granato) a starter. Burns is hitting .433 w/1.33 per set vice Castillo’s .250 w/1.25. Blocking avg is Burns .93, Castillo .70. Shoji’s got it right starting Burns and Granato if you go to the stats and not the other actions not in the stats.

  52. warriorfan November 13, 2016 2:42 pm

Watched socal southern section title game yesterday. Was real impressed with Mater Dei Freshmen setter Mia Tuaniga, Kristiana’s cousin.
She’s just 5′ 9 but a good one. Maybe Iosia replacement in 2020.

  53. warriorfan November 13, 2016 3:03 pm

I was impressed with Natasha yesterday, she didn’t have a great hitting night and I do wish she would hit with more power but she got so many touches up at the net that allowed the UH defense to control the ball easier.

  54. Ron November 13, 2016 3:34 pm

holycow, I agree that Granato has better stats and has earned her place in the starting rotation. I am just saying that illness, injuries, and lack of experience has kept Sibley behind Granato and I think she has the potential to be a bigger contributor. I love what Burns has done but I feel that Castillo has a higher volleyball IQ and fits in better. What ever, Burns and Smith have been the pleasant surprises of the season. ( Annie and Noreen were not a surprise) WF- I watched that game and wondered if Mia was related. She is very good, as were many players on both teams.

  55. tako November 13, 2016 4:19 pm

Interestingly, don’t believe Sunshine or Smith (Emma came in with lots of laurels) are surprises. Guru Dave has sustained excellence for 42 years. Believe the next Hartongs are just around the corner in Sibley and Shaney and followed by Trinity Castaneda. Howling looks to be the next coming of Mitchem. Our legacy of having excellent setters continues with Noreen and the probability of Liliana Light in a year.

And in the present, supporting the Wahine to win out and on to the final four. Go Wahine

  56. warriorfan November 13, 2016 4:35 pm

Lots of similarities between Norene and Mia., as a freshmen Norene’e team also loss in the CIF southern section final also in 5 sets but you could tell Norene was going to be a good one, same with Mia.
about the same height and build, Mia hits in the front row for Mater Dei and sets in the backrow.

  57. A View From Afar November 13, 2016 4:37 pm

I did attend the UC Davis match last night.
I don’t watch enough matches to be able to intelligently comment on specific performances.
But I can say something about what the match “felt” like.
Official attendance was 739 with a very large portion of those Hawaii fans.
Yet there seemed to be a general lack of energy in the building as a whole.
Oddly, the section where the UCD supporters were concentrated in was not the two or four arena level bleachers opposite the scorer’s table and team benches as had been in so in the past, but rather the two sections towards a corner behind where the UCD team bench was for sets 1 and 3.
The rest of the audience was UH and UCD fans mixed together along the sideline bleachers (almost no one sitting in the end line bleachers).
Yes, I heard the various calls shouted out sometimes when UH was serving, (and not to excuse the poor sportsmanship of it) but it was very little and I’m sure the team has heard much worst.
Also heard the air horn which was followed immediately by the venue announcer reminding the crowd that was not allowed.

  58. haleiwacrossfitter November 13, 2016 4:47 pm

I believe Hawaii last had a lefty way back in the late 80’s with Johanna Sahm. I can’t recall another since then. I could be wrong

  59. warriorfan November 13, 2016 4:55 pm

    54. Mia is Gus Tuaniga’s and Josh Tuaniga’s ( long Beach setter) little sister
I’m sure Brian G will also be recruiting her as they will be losing a setter in 2020 also.

  60. kahuna November 13, 2016 5:12 pm

Question is….does Mia want to play for that friutcake named Brian G. Get her to come on her official visit on senior night and she will see what UH is all about.

  61. warriorfan November 13, 2016 5:18 pm

    60. I guess we will see in a year or two lol. Remember while a high school freshmen seems very young, girls are committing now by their sophomore year , and at the very latest during their junior years.

I’d be happy if the wahine 2020 class is Mia Tuaniga and Elena Oglivie.

  62. Hot November 14, 2016 7:08 am

    52. Granato has had more opportunities than Sibley, especially in conference.

Burns has better hitting stats than Castillo, but you have to remember that she only played two full matches as a middle since the conference matches began: vs. UCSB (7-1-9, .667) and Cal Poly (4-1-9, .333). She has since been sidelined because of Mitchem’s return to the middle, and when Mitchem started playing OH, Castillo was hampered by leg problems and either sat out or played very little. Also remember that the most attempts she had this season was vs. LBSU, when she hit .000 with 3 kills, 3 errors and 20 attempts as an OH, replacing Sibley in the lineup. The most attempts Castillo had as a middle were 18 (6-2-18, .222) vs. Arizona, coming off the bench and replacing Burns, and 10 vs. Northern Illinois (6-2-10, .400).

Both Burns and Castillo have ways to go to be an efficient middle, but I think Castillo is a bit ahead when it comes to closing blocks. There’s not much difference in the offense that they provide. Both aren’t the go-to scorers in the middle.

  63. Hot November 14, 2016 7:10 am

Wanted to add that I am talking about Castillo in the second paragraph.
