Monday pm: Danielson, Iosia, Kaleikini
for those who might have missed my photo from the morning thread, this is the SSC when the lights are off.
Kanani Danielson is supposed to be playing in a pro-am volleyball celebrity thing on the beach fronting Duke’s Waikiki along with Misty May-Treanor, Kevin Wong among others. Scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. as of this evening. You never know if things get cancelled.
Many may have missed Stanley Lee’s story on 2016 UH commit Norene Iosia from the Ann Kang (major press problems didn’t allow for everyone to get a sports section). Some quotes were used, others weren’t.
Iosia played for American Samoa which won the gold at the Pacific Games. Team also had Jane Croson
From Stanley:
On visiting UH during her trip.
“Right when I walked in the (Stan Sheriff Center), it was so beautiful. That was my first time actually looking at the school. I fell in love with the gym. It was so nice.”
This was only her second trip to Hawaii. Came with Redondo as a freshman. Has a lot of family here, most of her dad’s side. Said that factored into decision to play at UH
“Ever since i was little, I’ve always wanted to come out here.”
On Hawaii
“I love it out here. I love the people, the food, the ocean, everything.”
Coach Tommy Chaffins said Iosia is very humble, makes coaching easier with players of her demeanor.
>> earlier today ran into Danny Kaleikini downtown. he said he’s looking forward to singing at Friday’s Wahine volleyball opener. Had heard they would be good. Such a nice man.
Also ran into Don Murphy’s wife who said Don is doing well after his knee replacement and that they’re hoping the weather clears up for Thursday’s Pigskin Pigout.
I predict Iosia redshirts, lets higgins play her senior season, and after that, we will see four years of Norene leading the Wahine.
ON a side note, Wahine recruit, Kirsten Sibley, doesn’t make prep volleyballs top 100, but makes the just missed list. Still think shell have a tremendous impact for the Wahine.
I think next years team will be so good at every other position with a legitimate chance at the title if Iosia is the setter. She is that good. If Higgins improves over last year, this years team will also go deep into the tournament. We are in for some great volleyball over the next few years. Higgins is becoming a good college setter, Iosia is the next Robin Au Mow.
1. not the scenario I see but I could be wrong
2. Was told by Stanley how nice Iosia’s hands were. Haven’t had a chance to see the online video of her playing.
Ah Mow-Santos a very special setter. She still does amazing things in practice and she’ll be 40 next month. Fluid and effortless.
