Monday checkin
School stars today. They are back to one practice, which will be this afternoon in Gym 1. Arena being prepped for opener and think they have some function in there Tuesday.
so let’s continue the discussion over here from previous thread.
Topics
Yes the S-A is having a volleyball special. It comes out Friday.
Yes DS can attack from behind the 3-meter line
Yes Maglio is playing middle, she is very capable of playing back row. But I don’t see her being used in all 6 rotations. They have a lot of good DSs.
And, yes, let’s keep it civil.

Good comment that the scrimmage was them playing against each other and not against another team which could be different. Some stats were on the hawaii athletics site. Nikki had some errors.

What is the match ups on Saturday night. Does it depend on who wins or is it predetermined?
All preset, UH vs. Kansas St on Saturday, Arizona on Sunday.
2. rabbits ears, here’s the UH schedule

Cindy, do you know the status of Nikki’s elbow injured during the latter part of the scrimmage. Fortunately, she collided with one of the two smallest players. It would be sad if she could not play against her Pan American teammate (Carlini)

thank you all.
5. will have update tomorrow.
It’s her left elbow, not the same one that kept her out a while ago.
Castillo was cleared to practice today. Practiced both at middle and OH. Koelsch continues to also take swings at OH as well as get setting reps.
About 3 hours in Gym 1. very spirited.
I don’t think Maglio is going to play back row. Perhaps in some rotations, they may leave her in to serve, but there’s no way she’s taking Kahakai’s rotations. Maglio’s serving turn is also occupied by Anderson, who’s proven herself last year. Then, you still have Ponce and Guinasso, both capable and experienced DS.
Regarding the DS, I have a feeling Smith and Okino are going to redshirt. Obviously, Anderson, Ponce and Guinasso will see the court in some capacity. If depth in the front row continues to be an issue, I think Ross is going to play this season.
Not sure if anyone posted this already, but here’s the Setter preview from the UH website:

To me it sounds like it’s between Higgins and Iosia, with Higgins at an advantage. Koelsch will backup.
Ma`afala will sit out due to transfer rules. Same thing with Courtney Lelepali, who also came in from Southern Utah.
Cindy, after today’s practice, who in your opinion will get the start at middle opposite Maglio, Burns or Castillo. Or maybe you may have a better idea as late as Wednesday’s afternoon practice.
Slipped my mind, did Shoji land and was he at afternoon practice? Thanks.
Saw Norene’s mom, she is really really nice. She said she just wants her daughter to have a chance to start. I told her Coach Shoji has a history of starting the seniors instead of best players, but all is not lost.
13. That is not always true. I remember Robyn Ah Mow took the starting position from upper-classman Kari Anderson back in 1993-94. So I believe Dave will start whoever is deserving this Friday. Higgins obviously has the inside track with 2+ years of experience as the starting setter for Hawaii but so did Kari before Robyn took over.
Dave Shoji @DaveShoji 6h ago
Back on US soil, sad to leave beautiful country and people. Lots of good memories, on to Wahine practice tomorrow.
10. agree. since Koelsch is taking a lot of reps at OH, i think it is between Iosia and Higgins.
11. hard to say about middles other than Maglio starting. Burns has shown a lot of up side but her footwork needs work and she needs to focus every play. sometimes gets lost. I like Castillo but since she’s also taking reps at OH, probably won’t have a starting lineup until Thursday. Or even Friday
12. was scheduled to get in tonight and be at practice Wednesday.
13 that has been the trend so I would assume Higgins starts Friday. but doesn’t mean we won’t see Iosia this weekend. She has great hands and a real court presence.
13. Interesting that she said chance to “start” vs chance to “play”. While Norene might be the “next Kanoe”, she is not THE Kanoe. She did look good at the scrimmage and I think might start by the end of the year if she adapts well to D1 and continues to improve.
14. it took quite a bit of discussion before Robyn Ah Mow replaced Anderson. If I remember correctly it didn’t happen the first match of the 94 season tho, which was Anderson’s senior season.
UH has been releasing daily position recaps. you can go to the VB homepage and get all of the ones they’ve uploaded
