16) Florida State def. 14( Texas A&M 18-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-8
if warmup any indication, it will be Taylor, Iosia, Granato, Castillo, Sibley, Maglio Kahakai. but it could change in about 3 minutes.
Noticed that Annie Mitchem is also warming up. I’m happy for her, Nikki and fans of Wahine VB!!!
Who’s doing the voice-over in the live stream?
See lineup at No. 4. Taylor starting.
5. Mitchem not cleared to play.
6. no idea. not listening to the stream. As mentioned, they’re supposed to be syncing with 1420-AM. maybe that’s who it is.
Maldonado’s operatic national anthem 🙂
6. so if it is the sync with 1420-AM it’s Tiff Wells. he’s been doing Wahine and Warrior volleyball broadcasts for 1420 since 2009. also does Wahine basketball color. You’ll hear him on Bobby’s show weekday’s.
Wahine with 4 blocks and it’s 12-6. TO Missouri State
Nikki’s blocking – immediate impact
Taylor at 993 in career kills.
10. Thanks, Cindy. I like listening to Wells.
Casey Castillo, Nikki Taylor and Norene Iosia with 2 blocks each already.
Taylor at 995. kill makes it 18-9. TO MSU
Very nice video and audio. I normally prefer the mid court view, but this is really good quality, so no complaints here. Kudos to all involved in getting this system setup so quickly!
UH looks much better than last week. MSU beat Illinois in Champaign so they are no slouch.
What a diiference a Nikki makes! Kudos to Shoji and staff for creating this lineup. Love it. Young wahine have no fear.
Higgins in to serve for Sibley.
16. for those of you familiar with the arena, the camera is up by the catwalk section EE
18. basically the lineup they had hoped to have to start, maybe with the exception of Iosia.
UH wins 25-16. Taylor at 997 kills.
21. Cindy, didn’t they win Set 1 against Kansas State?
Passing issues toward the end (jump serves caused it).
Really strong start. Now if they can get Granato going, this will be really fun to watch.
I’m not worried that MSU will come back.
Passing is only to the 3 meter line, Lucky we have Nikki
Iosia getting some nice digs.
Taylor with her 1,000th. it’s 10-6.
1000 kills for Nikki.
1,000 kills for NT!
22. yes they did which is why i erased it.
UH up 11-5. TO MSU
Not to mention leading the team in almost every catagory.
What a difference a Nikki Taylor make
Wow, Nikki making up for lost time no doubt. Really like the offense being spread out, causing the block to be all over the place with 1-1 matches for blocking. Nikki with 1000 kills. Majority of the girls on that list played during rally scoring when it was a lot easier to reach the 1000 mark. Go Bows!!
UH up 18-11. TO Bears
With the fixed cam view from the back we get to see the plays better than on TV.
Sibley with 8 kills. Nice.
Also, MSU not passing very well.
Now I understand how Arizona St. felt when they lost Macey Gardner last year. UH is at another level tonight.
Granato with 2 great passes, Sibley finding range
36. Agree
Passinggggg, can’t run the middle from the 3 meter line.
smart roll shot by Johnson brings the Bears to within 21-17. TO UH
Ditto
Nikki digs. Nikki kills.
Bears close to 23-22. TO UH
Ace by Iosia ends it. 25-22
The reason set 2 was close: poor passing forced Iosea to go high outside
Iosia has so much poise for a frosh.
Taylor with a double-double after just two sets, hitting .526 with 11 kills and 10 digs, while adding four blocks and two aces.
The audio went out for me somewhere, i only get the video now with the radio play- by- play ahead of the video.
so..who here on the blog is there at the game and plans to be at autographs?
I got the audio now , i think, when i clicked on the youtube link on the bottom right.
If they clean up the passing the 3rd should go fast.
Nikki was diving all over the court earlier , hope she doesn’t injure herself.
What going on?
Set middle?
Passing really bad.
Bears up 15-14 on a stuff of Maglio.
Bad passing. Even on a good pass, Maglio and Castillo can’t get the ball down.
UH very confused about their rotation. WAhine call a timeout at 16-16
MSU switch to faster sets, getting split blocks
Taylor with 17th. UH up 20-19. TO MSU
61. I noticed. Their offense has gotten a lot faster.
Taylor with 2 more kills. it’s 22-19. TO Bears.
They run a funky offense.
Bad passing – go to Nikki
Middles not producing – go to Nikki
Out of system – go to Nikki
NT covers up for a multitude of sins.
Bears challenging the touch call. It’s either going to stay 24-22 or go 23-23
No touch. it’s 24-22
Sibley ends it 25-22
btw cindy i heard somewhere about mike sealy of ucla receiving special scouting privileges, is that included this year? that he has other than normal scouting?
Hope the basketball streaming is good like this one.
70. Sealy has never received special privileges. he just happened to be at the scouting table that TV shows
Nikki looked like Lowe out there tonight.
mckenna and Mags struggled and Uh still swept and Iosia’s sets werent always great tonight but her serve and defense made up for that.
With a little help from Sibley.
they really need to get the middles going.
Cindy, I have a question. Will OC Sports live stream during conference season or have they bailed out completely and permanently?
kirsten was great , she has improved a lot in a week.
hope Mags gets out of her slump, was hoping mckenna would keep hitting like the Arizona match the rest of the season lol but hope she does againstrhe bruins.
76. don’t know about OCSports and their streaming. As of now. i would say no.
73. agreed.
72. cindy from what i gathered, its not because he was merely shown on tv at the scouting table but because he had other than what other coaches get to scout on na wahine.
whoever is getting autographs from na wahine, someone give noreen the warrior wahine compliment ‘dangerous setter.’ and ‘like a boss.’
79. HE DOES NOT GET SPECIAL PRIVILEGES. What else would he be getting that the other coaches don’t get.
I think some of tonight’s problems/confusions, happened because of the new lineup with Nikki. Once they play more sets together, things should go smoother. Was hoping to see Smith in there … maybe tomorrow.
81. i dont mean to be rude cindy. im just saying he supposedly gets it, just wondering if you had any idea.
83. and i’m not trying to be rude either. Tell me what you think he gets extra and from whom.
I think it should be more than the “I heard somewhere” “From what I gathered” and “supposedly.”
Last year people said it was because he was at the scouting table when no one else was. Only that’s because TV showed him and not the other table where the other coaches were.
Then it was well you know he recruited the UH players so he knows them and what they do. And he knows Shoji’s tendencies so that gives him an edge.
Sealy’s been gone seven years. He did go after several of the Wahine, including Iosia, but he was already at UCLA
76. If OC Sports will not live stream conference matches, I hope that someone will upload them on YouTube. I really miss seeing different angles of the court, closeups, and the colorful commentary of Chris McLaughlin. Not that Tiff Wells isn’t good since he is and I like listening to him as well. Chris McLaughlin is just different, original, funny and witty. So whoever uploads OC sportscasts on YouTube, please continue.
85. they’ll be up at some point on you tube. I’m sure it was very different for fans so used to the excellent job by KFVE/OCSports. At least you had sync-ed audio, which is more than a lot of Big West schools.
@warriorwahine…what do you mean by “special privileges”? What is it that you think he gets/has access to? Maybe whoever you”heard” it from should give you the details and then you can share with the rest of us what you “gathered”…
Anyway, stay safe out there. Overheard some talk that if Lester intensifies it may affect volleyball matches Saturday. It’s currently a Category 3.
I doubt if I’ll be back before Friday morning.
Play nice.
Welcome back Nikki Taylor! After I realized that Missouri St. upset then 14th ranked Illinois last week, I knew this match was big. If we didn’t have Nikki, the match could have been close.. Missouri St. has some very good players. I wouldn’t be surprised if they give UCLA a tough match too. Surprised Emma Smith didn’t play at all, but maybe we are saving her for UCLA? I am glad Guianasso ,Anderson , and Higgins got to serve several times. I have a great feeling this team is destined for a wonderful season!
Could the matches be moved to Sunday? I am afraid the ucla match if it stays saturday could be the lowest attended ucla match in a long time.
87. it was more of what i recall not actually ‘gathered’ but cindy explained it in 84.
that included because he was at the scouting table when no one else was, but thats because tv showed him and not the other table where the other coaches were.
and that included ‘well you know’ he recruited the uh players so he knows them and what they do as well as he knows shojis tendencies so that ‘would’ give him an edge.
other areas i thought ridiculous and hadnt mention earlier was that it was supposedly shoji who gave him extra special treatment. again, i thought thats ridiculous so i didnt mention it.
but all those above except the last were what supposedly constituted or compounded in addition to sealys ‘special scouting privileges.’
thinking about it now, it sounds like a rumor but still i had liked to get cindys findings on it to share with us, which she did.
89. Not surprised about Smith playing. If they needed to take Kahakai out, sure, they would need Smith to pass. But three players were already sharing one spot – Sibley front row, Greeley for defense, Guinasso for serving. Anderson is already in the rotation as the server for Maglio, and they had to work Higgins in because she has a great serve.
Last week, they needed Smith as a three-rotation DS for Koelsch, who only played front row. They don’t need her now, with Taylor playing all six rotations.
90. the matches could be moved to Sunday depending on what the teams flight plans are like. There was discussion last night of the campus being closed down Saturday and that include the Sheriff Center. That would be a decision made by Pres. Lassiter. Was told the decision might not be made until Saturday morning. Will keep you posted.
Got to thank Stanley staff for doing a good job in the placement of the fixed streaming camera – and the sync-up to the independent radio voice broadcast. Thank you. And to OC Sports, wahine volleyball fans are still bleeding from the betrayal. When will you stop the bleeding and get the streaming back up?
Hey Cindy, what was the whole fiasco and mixup and confusion in the middle of the 3rd set (I think?) when Shoji challenged that one call, and then it we re-versed couple points to 7-7? Wen he challenged it, I thought he was correct and UH was awarded the point? The next thing I know, the score went BACK to 7-7 and we were called for a rotation error? Did we win that challenge, or did the refs mistakenly give us the point after? I was super confused.
I think we saw Hawaii’s best lineup on the court last night, until Mitchem and KG heal up. However just a gut feel that getting Higgs out there tonight and ‘resting’ Iosia a bit might be beneficial to both, and the team. They’ll need Higgs down the stretch, and its healthy for freshman to see the game from the sideline once in a while.
Thank you Cindy for keeping the thread open overnight.
I don’t think I have ever seem Shoji smiling as much especially during the match? It appears that he is enjoying the match. And does it appear that Hall, Berg, Pestolesi and even Baxter, are much more involved in the coaching – with Dave often standing in the background. It is so unlike Dave to give up so much control. Is Dave getting soft in his old age – just kidding.
#97 Second that – thanks for keeping the blog open. Without a TMO or setter controversy, or an uproar over coaching favoritism, we posters don’t have a reason to insult each other – as yet.
98. Another possibility is that because of Dave’s absence during Rio, the other coaches stepped it up during training camp and as a result, are more comfortable being vocal and very involved during the matches. Also, you have two new coaches who are more vocal to begin with, including one that is a head coach in CA. To me, Robyn seemed to be a quiet leader but maybe I wasn’t focused on watching her during matches last year.
In any case, to reiterate what has been said, Taylor makes a huge difference. Barring another injury, this team should peak when the tournament begins, and I’d like to see a rematch with Wisconsin.
UCLA was sitting Lawless and Van Winden last night, injury? If they continue to sit, the Bruins depth chart gets tested. Against Pacific, Jordan Andersen (OH) was effective, Reily Buechler (OH) and Kyra Rogers (OH) less so, and Zana Muno at 5′ 10” playing opposite was surprisingly effective, but I don’t see that catching Missouri State by surprise the way it did Pacific. UCLA’s middles are big (6’5″ Jennie Frager, 6’6″ Clare Felix, and Gates 6’3″) but a connection with their setter, Chandler, not quite there. Missouri State, if they serve tough again and keep their middles involved, have a good chance against UCLA.
great to see nikki back!
good overall match from hawaii, against a dangerous missouri st team! bring on pacific and ucla … lester be damned! haha
i too would have liked to see emma smith find a way onto the court. she helped stabilize the passing last weekend. it’s tough b/c she was coming in for the opposite last week, and not that nikki is back, her offense is needed from the back row.
last night against msu, the passing struggled a little, and emma could’ve helped with that, imo. still though credit goes to msu’s tough jump serving.
90. Again, it could be moved only if the teams’ travel plans would allow for it. At the moment looking like the worst would be early morning Sunday. But we’ll know more either tonight or tomorrow.
94. you can thank Rich Sheriff for putting it up. They did ask me which angle I preferred, told them mid court, but the ‘coaches’ view from baseline was the easiest to place the camera since the catwalk is right there.
95. UH was out of rotation, had the wrong server. correctable error and it was fixed correctly.
As for the blog staying open, had enough people asked for it so am giving it a trial run. There are plenty of controversies and inappropriate comments. the nice thing is that most have been caught in the spam filter.
100. agree with that. The players are used to hearing from the assistants. Berg is very vocal in public. Ah Mow-Santos was very vocal in the locker room but she also had her ‘discussions’ with the setters.
As for UCLA’s players, have said all week that the Bruins are dealing with injuries and that Sealy is trying to put out a team on the court. Both Lawless and Van Winden have not been cleared to practice or play. That could change tonight or tomorrow.
103. with Taylor in there, it takes out a DS since Taylor also serves, passes and hits from 3 meter. There continues to be a lot of competition for that DS server, and they rewarded Guinasso for a good week of practice.

new thread up.
