Congrats to Hartong on league title; SandBows beat Tulane

Hartong had 15 points to help lead Hyundai Engineering & Construction to the championship over IBK Altos in the South Korean League earlier this week. First title for Hyundai and it was over defending champion IBK Altos.

I would be remiss if I didn’t say how much I enjoyed watching Ah Mow-Santso grow from a quiet high school player and fairly quiet in college to the player and coach she has become.
We spent a lot of time together on the Euro tour last spring along with trainer Renae. One memorable night in Milan had us on the tram that ended its nightly run miles from where we expected it to go. We must have walked 3 miles trying to find a tram still running that would get us close to the hotel.
She was so respected by the other teams and coaches that Hawaii played during the trip, something that gets forgotten here after her years playing internationally.

SandBows opened play in Deland, Fla., earlier today with a 4-1 win over Tulane. Loss came at No. 1 with Taylor-Schreiber. Winning in straight sets were Spieler-Maglio, Rooks-Schucht, Zalopany-Homayun and Long-Tucker

coach needs to break up nikki and lara. Maybe put nikki back with Katie. Not that you want to break up Katie and Emily. Katie makes it easy for her partners. Emily and Lara might work at 2.

Matlin needs to sit down with Shoji and determine the way ahead. Just walking away would be insensitive and thoughtless; leaving the team, the assistants, the school, and the fans out on a limb (not to mention absence of 2017 recruiting.) The gap of time between losing Shoji and hiring a new coach could take months so the process should be as seamless as possible.

  3. Warriorfan March 24, 2016 1:13 pm

    1. Why ? Dont you realize Lara and Nikki are facing the best of the best at flight 1 ?? They are a new pair give them time, also splitting Nikki and Katie up makes UH stronger overall thats all that matters with no pair chanpionship this year.

  4. Warriorfan March 24, 2016 1:15 pm

    2. I like the way Nebraska did it ,they hired Cook as an associate away from Wisconsin and then a year later when Pettit retired Cook took over and it was pretty seamless.

  5. tako March 24, 2016 3:46 pm

Maybe Hall will be the next HC that will be pretty seamless. Or, maybe Scott Wong will return, that also will be seamless.

However it plays out, Shoji will never walk away in an insensitive or thoughtless manner.

When he decides to retire there will be a plan, its just that the next HC will be faced with big expectations. Just maybe too big and there may be no viable candidates applying…who knows.. Enjoy the time we have with one of the great ones.

When Shoji decide to call it quits i hope they have a large pool of applicants for his position. First of though he needs to find a replacement for Robyn.

  7. Hapaguy March 24, 2016 7:05 pm

I hope Taylor & Schreiber get it together. They are not gelling right now. Maybe Hall might have to split them up.

  8. Cindy Luis March 24, 2016 7:11 pm

    1. no reason to break up Taylor and Schreiber. As mentioned they are facing the opponent’s No. 1 pair, most of whom have played together for a while. Tulane pair is now 13-1. obviously a good team.

    2. no one said anything about Shoji walking away. They continue to recruit for 2017. not sure why you say people are being left out on a limb. He has not decided to retire. All I said was it wasn’t happening now and WHEN it happens it will come after the season is over because he doesn’t want a farewell tour.
Consider when Banachowski and Matthies retired. done after the season was over.

    5. thank you Tako for sharing the same sentiments. As for Hall, to be honest he’s always said he wants to be the best beach coach there is. that’s his focus at the moment.

agree that there will be no lack of qualified applicants.

  9. Cindy Luis March 24, 2016 7:16 pm

    7. coaches can’t just split up pairs. players are allowed to move up or down 1 or 2 places.
They like the chemistry with Speiler and Maglio. Don’t see that combo being split up.

  10. rabbit ears March 24, 2016 7:28 pm

pretty sure emily and katie will be back at 1’s tomorrow.

  11. Ki March 24, 2016 8:02 pm

I actuality like Mags & Spieler at #2. That gives us a chance to win that flight against most teams since a lot of the veteran pairs are on the top flight. Plus Scheiber & Taylor make for a good pair. They just need time to jell; get acquainted and build chemistry. They’re on there way.

  12. Setaone March 24, 2016 8:08 pm

Seems that Iosia is taking it hard that Robyn is leaving. Hope she isn’t having second thoughts.

  13. Rabbit ears March 24, 2016 9:27 pm

#11 We are a top 5 team, We don’t need to sandbag to get the win. To be the best you got to beat the best!!

  14. Ki March 24, 2016 9:52 pm

    13. I’d like to think of it more as strategy. Otherwise, flight numbers wouldn’t be interchangeable.

  15. warriorfan March 24, 2016 9:55 pm

    13. Stop ragging on Schrieber and Taylor, they are good too, they face the toughest pairs every time that’s why their record isn’t as good. Also they are the type of team that can get hot and beat anyone at any time.
They will be fine and It’s not sandbagging.

  16. warriorfan March 24, 2016 9:57 pm

    14. Exactly, Coach Hall is preparing them to beat USC/UCLA/Pepperdine in Alabama, when it matters the most.

  17. warriorfan March 24, 2016 9:58 pm

    12. Doubt it. She’s probably just as surprised as Shoji and all the fans are. But she will still get great coaching from Shoji, Hall and whoever else Shoji Hires. Shoji has a great track record of hiring assistants.

Honestly, I almost feel that being the #1 pair is like a sacrificial lamb. And I mean that in a way because USC’s pair is basically unbeatable. That #1 pair will beat every #1 pair they play this season. So, strategically, why not focus on pairs #2-5? If we win those 4 pairs, so what if we lose #1. We could win a national championship even if we lose the #1 pairings.

Take for example, Nikki and Lara could not beat USC’s #2 pair and Emily and Katie could not beat USC’s #1 pair. But when they were switched, Emily and Katie beat USC’s #2 pair, which gave the team a 3-2 loss vs a 4-1 loss. So, why not just sacrifice the #1 pairing and focus on winning #2-4? At least while Claes and Hughes are together anyway.

    Put Emily and Katie #2
Put Nikki and Lara #3…so on and so forth. Don’t know who he would put as the “sacrificial #1” though.

Please don’t think I’m dissing anyone or just dumping, I’m just thinking strategically. 🙂 Maybe it’s not a “fair” way to approach it? Maybe it’s taking away the confidence and the competitiveness of the student athletes. I don’t know. Just throwing it out there.

#12, Setaone, where are seeing that Norene is taking Robyn’s departure hard?

I mean, I’m sure she is, but where are you seeing it.

And I would not blame her. Norene is exactly like Robyn coming out of high school. She could be the next 3 time Olympic setter. I’m sure Robyn being her coach played a factor in her decision, even if just a small factor.

Losing Robyn sucks….it just does. 🙁

Thanks for that story Cindy. That made me chuckle. I am sure Robyn is more famous internationally than we here in Hawaii notice. Losing Robyn sucks. Yes, I said it again because it warrants it. 🙁

I guess taking it hard is an overstatement. Hopefully one of the first things done was reassuring recruits

Yup…that does actually look really sad. 🙁 ugh….did I say how much Robyn leaving sucks? I did? Oh….well….Robyn leaving sucks. Honestly, I’m actually really surprised how bummed out I am by it. I’m like really, really bummed about it.

    Ok. I’ll shut up already.

    🙁

  24. warriorfan March 25, 2016 3:26 pm

I loved Robyn but it’s not the end of the world. UH will be to find someone just as good maybe even better.

  25. Cindy Luis March 25, 2016 4:10 pm

thanks for the links from beach
Hawaii beats Stetson, 4-1, the loss being at No. 1 Schreiber-Taylor, 23-21, 21-15
The Stetson No. 1 pair improves to 17-0
    Hawaii beats FAU, 5-0

    24. they will find someone. he/she will be good. not necessarily better just different. not too worried.

  26. Cindy Luis March 25, 2016 4:15 pm

    20. yes, a bit of an overstatement that she’s sad. so are the current Wahine.
think people are over thinking the 1-2 pairs.
the rule is that they can only move up or down one flight. That’s so teams don’t ‘sacrifice’ their weaker players at the top and game the system by putting the best players at the bottom.
But since this year’s NCAA championship does not have a pairs competition the important thing is the team record.
I would give Taylor and Schreiber a break. New pairing still working on their chemistry. and going against the other team’s beat pair.
