From Cindy’s last post in the previous thread, I would so much want Hawai`i to be the Pac-16 if that ever happens. I can’t imagine what it would be like. Every match, a dog fight. No time to relax or take teams lightly at all. Stanford and Cal this week, UCLA and USC next week, Washington and Washington State the following week, ASU and Arizona the next, Colorado and Utah after that, Oregon and Oregon State, etc etc. Can’t relax. OMG. Makes you tougher and stronger mentally but may breakdown a bit more physically, but even that will make you stronger. The football team may be trounced every week at the start, but recruits will know that we would be a PAC-16 team and we would attract more 4 or 5 star recruits.

    Dream on. Never gonna happen.

Yeah, aside from the high level of competition, the revenue sharing from the Pac 12 would solve all of UH athletics financial concerns. Currently, each Pac 12 school shares in the tv revenues – each school getting about $21 million each year.

There was time when the then Pac 8/10 was interested in Hawaii but it was a long time ago. Today, without a major tv market base, we appear to be non qualifiers – such is life.

I doubt that the added TV money would solve UH’s problems. IMO, joining the Pac-12 may exacerbate UH’s financial condition as the university/athletic dept. would feel the need to join the facilities arms race that has occurred in recent years. In addition, with more money and tougher competition comes the need for having to compete in all areas of attracting athletes–facilities, recruiting budgets, salaries, support staff, etc. Cal has a significant deficit because of the debt service related to its football stadium. UH would probably still have a deficit, but nicer facilities and more support for their teams, which would help with recruiting. But as others have mentioned, this is likely a dream now past–I don’t see the Pac-12 asking UH to join in any future expansion.

Arizona loses to Arizona State in five. Ouch.

Couple of items from previous thread and new thread:

    1. Hawaii will never be a part of Pac12/16 or whatever they expand to. I have given up on that dream a looooong time ago. I was hopeful when Sheriff was around, but since his passing, no way.

    2. Tucker/Martin I feel will be UH’s #1 team this year. The fact that they beat Spieler/Boylan and took the UCLA twins to the limit each game says a lot. Martin was one of the top beach recruits in country. She will be the new Spieler the next four years.

    3. Ok, I know this is a “negative nancy” comment, but I am concerned about Norene transferring when Dave retires. She has consistently said since she first committed, and even now when asked, the reason she committed was mainly, and firstly, because of Dave. I know Sealy wanted her BAD and I’m sure will still take her and it came down to UCLA and UH for her. I’m really hoping she stays with us for her career. Sorry for even bringing this up..I have ZERO inside knowledge on this and it’s just my own insecurities regarding players staying with the program when/if Dave retires. Look what happened when Andy left UCLA. It can and may happen to UH when Dave leaves, I’m sure. Even West Virginia when they lost Jill Kramer, we benefited with Burns, UCLA benefited with Jordan Anderson. When a coach retires, it happens. We need to be mentally prepared for it to happen. Ok…I’m done being negative about it. 🙂

I’m SUPER excited to see who the heck we are going to destroy in the first and second round this year. And the unfortunate seed who gets us in their regional for top 16/8. Final four here we come.

    8. HCF, welcome back. Btw, on the UCLA comment when Andy left, also recognize that in year 2 of Sealy’s tenure, the Bruins won the national championship. Also an outside shot that Sealy succeeds Dave. He loves Hawaii and might make the move. But I’m getting ahead of myself…

Sand VB has won six matches over UCLA so far today.

Watching #2 Minnesota playing #3 Wisconsin…..That’s Power Volleyball!!
Minnesota wins in 5….We can play with both of them but after watching them tonite, I would play Annie, Nikki, Maglio as much as possible up Front….Mixing in McKenna Granato.wisely against these huge teams would be advised. They will just go over her and take advantage of her height. If we play smaller and not as athletic as the Big Ten , then Mckenna can match up. She is a strong hitter and a good volleyball player, but this postseason becomes a MATCH UP COMPETITION…..We have to play at the level we played in the 2nd match vs. LBSU…..If we play at that LEVEL and even better , we will have a tremendous chance at the FINAL 4….but let’s just take one match at a time….everyone wants to win….IT’S one and out or move forward…
    IMUA BOWS!!!

UH beach team not playing three of their top four players from last season so who knows who the top duo will be come spring. Hope coach Hall plays his actual top pair at flight 2 anyway since Claes and Hughes will be neary unbeatable again.

  14. haleiwacrossfitter November 26, 2016 6:52 pm

    Thanks Mav…

I’m sure we will get a phenomenal coach to replace Dave and would not be surprised at all if it was Sealy. I would also love to see Dan Fisher give it a go. He’s building a great resume and some good USA vball and east coast contacts. I’m positive some blue chippers would come his way at some point.

Regarding Hughes/Claes. I agree, they are just unstoppable and look forward to cheering them on in the Olympics in Tokyo. And for finally leaving USC. I know it’s against the spirit of the game and the official rules, but just send a sacrificial lamb to the #1 spot and win #s 2-5. I’m kind of sort of kidding on that. Sort of…but not really. 😉

I could see a Martin/Emma Smith top flight. Martin is what 6’1″? Tall enough for the net game. Smith is another top ranked beach recruit we got lucky with as a walk on.

  15. Warriorfan November 26, 2016 7:50 pm

My guess for UH beach (if Nikki plays)

    Flight one
    Nikki Taylor
    Kaiwi Schucht

    Flight 2
    Emily Maglio
Carly Kan ( think she will be just as good on beach as she is indoors)

Flight 3 ( they can dominate here)
    Morgan Martin
    Mikayla Tucker

    Flight 4
    Emma Smith
    Amy Ozee

Flight 5 ( they will be unbeatable here imo)
    Hannah Rooks
    Ari Homayun

  16. Warriorfan November 26, 2016 8:00 pm

As talented as Martin and Smith are I just can’t see Coach Hall playing two true freshmen at the top flight.

  17. Maverick November 26, 2016 8:56 pm

Final adjusted-RPI rank estimates for UH: 23 (McGinn), 24 (Kern), 29 (other VT source). The last one seems way off. 23/24 puts UH with the 9/10 seed, if you go strictly by 32 getting 1, 17 getting 16, etc.

Estimated 7-12 RPI are BYU, UNC, Missouri, Stanford, Florida, UCLA. Highly unlikely UH goes to UNC or to Florida. IMO, likely Stanford or UCLA, then BYU and Missouri. Kansas is at 5, but has the worst SOS of the top 25. They may drop in seedings, and if so, outside shot of UH going there. I think San Diego played itself out of a seed.

    We will find out tomorrow.

  18. haleiwacrossfitter November 27, 2016 5:53 am

#16, WF…I would normally agree, but these two are not your normal freshman. They both could be on the pro tour and could be the next Hughes/Claes duo. They are both that good. I don’t know what kind of partnership or chemistry they would have together, which is obviously huge on the beach. But, if they click together, I can see them paired together…and dominate together.

    new thread up
    some comments
have long thought that football should just create four super conferences of 16 and go from there. It was sad to see the traditional rivalries get erased because football moved to another conference. Destroyed Big East basketball.
It would be interesting to see what the TV deal would be if the Pac-12 network would be in play with UH.

It really sounds like Taylor won’t play beach in spring. Hall said he was OK with the decision either way although his comment was “I’ll advocate for my program.”

don’t think Tucker-Martin would be the No. 1 pair. Believe it will be Maglio and whoever is the best fit as a partner. Hall is big on chemistry.
interesting pairing would be Kahakai. with Maglio she said she’s coming out in spring. We’ll see if Mitchem changes her mind. think it’s a no as of now.
