For those interested in reading about Dan Apol, the ref who died earlier this week and was the up ref for UH’s matches at the SSC vs. Long Beach State and CSUN, this is the link from USA Volleyball
    http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Volleyball/Features/2016/November/17/Dan-Apol

  2. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:02 pm

UH starting Burns, Iosia, Greeley/Granato Taylor, Mitchem, Kahakai, Maglio.

  3. volleyballson November 17, 2016 7:03 pm

    Hey Cindy,

For some reason when I click on the stream link it says it wont start for another 25 minutes? Anyone else having this problem?

  4. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:09 pm

UH tweaks its lineup, swapping Mitchem and Granato at L1

  5. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:14 pm

2nd net roll ace for UH, this one by Granato, makes it 11-5. TO Mustangs.

  6. Andy November 17, 2016 7:14 pm

Wow, Noreen set Annie on a pipe and Nikki on a D on the same point.

  7. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:18 pm

    2 words: Bad rotation
UH up 16-5 TO Cal Poly. Granato still serving

  8. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:19 pm

    3. sorry, no idea why it’s not working

  9. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:27 pm

3 great plays by Iosia in the last 4 UH points. Wins the joust, blocks Griesen, tips 2nd ball to back corner. UH wins 25-11.

  10. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:35 pm

Cal Poly wins the challenge. gets the touch call. it’s 5-2.

  12. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:41 pm

Yellow card to UH for delay of game. Castillo was going to sub for Burns. but she was wearing an earring Burns still in. Cal Poly up 12-6. TO UH

  13. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:42 pm

Still no kills for UH middles. Burns 0-2-5, Maglio 0-0-5

  14. Ashley November 17, 2016 7:42 pm

Hawaii is playing like Cal Poly did in set 1, omg. Dave what took you forever to call a time out? clearly the players are in a bad funk.

  15. Willie November 17, 2016 7:43 pm

No mention of yellow card on TV. Can you call a timeout to get the sub in, even with the earring infraction?

  16. Willie November 17, 2016 7:47 pm

Annie’s power and heavy ball reminiscent of Heather Bown, IMO.

  17. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:49 pm

Mustangs’ 6 point lead now down to 1. 17-16. TO Cal Poly

  18. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:51 pm

    14. give Cal Poly some credit. readjusted their block, tooling the block.

  19. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:53 pm

first kill from a UH middle. Burns ties it at 18

  20. Blunite November 17, 2016 7:53 pm

Jewelry violates proper attire in BW code.

  21. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 7:57 pm

Ace by Smith gives UH the 23-21 led. TO Mustangs

  22. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 8:00 pm

Cal Poly has tied it at 23. TO UH

  23. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 8:03 pm

UH wins its 26-24. on a net violation.

  24. Volleyman November 17, 2016 8:07 pm

Wow. That set made me nervous. Wahine need to set the middle way more especially Maglio.

  25. Maverick November 17, 2016 8:08 pm

Good to see UH come back from a 12-6 deficit and fight through a tough set.

  26. Maverick November 17, 2016 8:10 pm

Middles have to produce. Combined, the middle is 2-3-14, hitting -.071.

  27. Blunite November 17, 2016 8:14 pm

Both teams going to the pins. CP passing not optimal, due to excellent serving by UH. UH should camp out on Griesen or Van Winden (whomever is playing on the net).

  28. Andy November 17, 2016 8:15 pm

Surprised that Dave put Castillo back in before the break. He’s softening up in his old age. She did good, though.

  29. Willie November 17, 2016 8:15 pm

Hope that Castillo going to get some reps. Good to have her ready going forward. Burns seems a little tentative tonight and a step slow.

  30. HawaiiMongoose November 17, 2016 8:19 pm

UH’s passing hasn’t been optimal either.

  31. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 8:20 pm

Shoji challenging whether serve hit Kahakai on the way out.

  32. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 8:20 pm

touch called, it’s 7-4 Cal Poly

  33. Blunite November 17, 2016 8:21 pm

Someone tell Birns to cut the ball, she keeps hitting straight ahead.

  34. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 8:21 pm

    29. they did flop the L1 so things a little different for Mitchem tonight.

  35. z November 17, 2016 8:24 pm

Granato doing a really nice job tonight.

  36. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 8:24 pm

Granato with 2 kills. UH up 11-8. TO Cal Poly

  37. HawaiiMongoose November 17, 2016 8:28 pm

Both teams playing some real good volleyball tonight.

  38. Blunite November 17, 2016 8:29 pm

With Nikki’s serving, this is a wrap.

  39. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 8:29 pm

Taylor serving, 2 aces, hopes UH to a 16-9 lead. TO Mustangs

  40. Willie November 17, 2016 8:35 pm

Where’s Castillo? Like the Granto front row & Greeley back row combo.

  41. Blunite November 17, 2016 8:35 pm

Van Winden might have got away with a throw.

  42. HawaiiMongoose November 17, 2016 8:37 pm

Congratulations to Dave on #1,200, and to the Wahine on another Big West championship and NCAA tournament bid!

  43. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 8:38 pm

Taylor with a block. UH wins 25-15.

  44. Maverick November 17, 2016 8:40 pm

Now let the speculation begin about where UH is sent for the first two rounds…

  45. z November 17, 2016 8:42 pm

    King Dave.

  46. Volleyman November 17, 2016 8:44 pm

I think Hawaii is either going to be sent to San Diego, UCLA, or Washington. \

But I wish they would be sent to Missouri or Western Kentucky

  47. WaWa November 17, 2016 8:49 pm

Surprised Higgins didn’t get in there to set towards the end. I fell asleep somewhere in the middle of the match. I hope she got in somewhere during this match.

On a random tangent, if you watched Brian Gimmilaro’s interview posted somewhere, he mentioned wanting to throw in the towel recently after all the injuries his team has endured. I, for one, was happy for BG & The Beach’s win over the Wahine earlier in the season. Ever since, Hawaii joined the WAC, teams OTHER THAN LBSU were able to beat the Wahine (from Northridge to UCSB and I think some other team). He’s had the talent, but they’ve been just so injury riddled. This past season has been an emotional rollercoaster for him. From his team’s victory over the Wahine to the red card that cost his team the match vs UCI to his altercation with the fan at the replayed match vs UCI. I would not be surprised if he resigns after this season or is given some kind of ultimatum. Would Misty be ready to take over her alma mater after one season at LBCC? Will BG hang on and Misty take over eventually?

  48. Maverick November 17, 2016 8:58 pm

Wouldn’t mind San Diego. Think this squad now has the weapons to beat all three away from home.

  49. T103 November 17, 2016 9:29 pm

Ahhh I had to work tonite, was bummed I couldn’t make it, congrats dave on 1200 wins. BUT I will be there for senior nite saturday nite, white out if I’m not mistaken. So let me just double check, there was NOT an announcement made by BW correct? I just wanna be caught up just in case I missed it.

  50. blunite November 17, 2016 9:32 pm

    Serving Clinic by Hawaii.

Probably the difference between first match and tonight. In fairness to CP, they showed their toughness in the second game, when Hawaii’s serving tapered off.

Serving and passing are Hawaii’s keys. When they are on the sky’s the limit; otherwise, they are just another team. Unfortunately, they will have to travel for the post season (meaning they serve and pass better at home).

  51. Rabbit ears November 17, 2016 9:37 pm

The road to the final four run through our middle. Higher sets and quick sets would help. Middles doing more with off sets would help too. Nikki was awesome tonight. Annie was not far behind. McKenna played solid also.

  52. warriorfan November 17, 2016 9:38 pm

I thought Olivia was really great on tv, hope they bring her back for the mens season.

Really loving what Dave did with switching Mckenna to OH2 and Annie to OH1 , that way we have either Annie or Nikki in the front row at all times.

  53. Rabbit ears November 17, 2016 9:41 pm

Hope Higgins gets to start on Saturday.

  54. Rabbit ears November 17, 2016 9:43 pm

Is Olivia still at UH. ??

  55. Eric96822 November 17, 2016 9:50 pm

I would rather see UH at San Diego because I think UH can beat them from what I have seen online of San Diego. However, I would love to see UH beat Washington at Washington 0r UCLA at UCLA because payback is a b.

  56. tongo November 17, 2016 9:53 pm

Tough offensive match for our middles but they hung in there to block well against a quick Mustang attack. Taylor Nelson is just an amazing setter and you got to give much kudos to their coach Sam Crosson for deploying such a quick and intelligent offense.
Really enjoyed seeing Olivia as a commentator. She was really good – intelligent, insightful, and articulate.

  57. T103 November 17, 2016 9:59 pm

@rabbit no she isn’t. She graduated recently. I saw her and davis holt and struck up a convo w her, she graduated in communications and I forget where she is working, she says in a couple of years she wants to move back to her home, I think it was washington?

  58. tongo November 17, 2016 10:05 pm

Is it just me or does the sets between Iosia and Maglio appear to be off for last couple matches. Is Emily jumping too early or is Norene setting the ball slightly higher throwing off the timing?

  59. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 10:07 pm

    53. we’ll see what happens with the starters.

Shoji had a couple of interesting comments when asked about Castillo’s earrings. said the ref had warned him about her wearing them in warmups and he said he thinks Casey forgot to take them out. Shoji said the jewelry thing was a silly rule, that international players wear jewelry and it doesn’t affect the game, isn’t a cause f injury.

  60. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 10:11 pm

    58. it’s you ‘-)
Maglio 7-1-10 last Saturday at UC Davis. 5-1-13 at UCI.
tonight agree the connection wasn’t there and the passing did seem a little off with Iosia choosing not to run the slides.

  61. Volleyman November 17, 2016 10:18 pm

However, before looking at the seeded team, who knows who Hawaii will face in the 1st round. I really hope it won’t be a power 5 conference team.

  62. tongo November 17, 2016 10:24 pm

Does Nikki performance tonight add to the case that she may be among the best, if not the best server in the history of the program? Better than Amber Kaufman or Sarah Mason?

  63. Warriorfan November 17, 2016 10:39 pm

I think Kim Willoughby was the best server ever.

  64. Ron November 18, 2016 6:45 am

Kim W. was very good, but I think Nikki is better. Maybe our stat guy can put in black and white. Regardless, my favorite to watch serve was Jane Crosen.

  65. setaone November 18, 2016 7:18 am

Kim Willoughy could just over power teams with her serve. She wasn’t as consistent as more recent jump servers.

Kaufman’s serve had so much movement and was pretty effective from behind the service line. Victoria Prince also had a really effective jump serve. You would have thought that she would have been a great back row attacker……

  66. rabbit ears November 18, 2016 8:20 am

Sometimes I was wondering who Lisa Strand-Maa was pulling for last night.

  67. WizeMary November 18, 2016 9:03 am

    66. I believe Lisa Strand Maa was pulling her hair, our middles lacked production as she too noticed.

  68. WizeMary November 18, 2016 9:07 am

Angelica Lgungquist would have been an even greater jump server should the rules during her time did not allow let serves….Brandi Bruks had a fabulous standing spin serve, Jenny Wilton had stealth torpedos

Sudduth was the mother of the jump float….that resulted in the opponents ability to pass her serves perfectly and run multiple options against Hawaii

  69. tongo November 18, 2016 9:08 am

Lisa was pulling for good volleyball! And if we were fortunate enough to have a family member playing, we would be excited for them also – whether for wahines or the Mustangs.

  70. rabbit ears November 18, 2016 2:11 pm

Lisa shouldn’t be next to Kanoa when Cal Poly plays UH.

  71. Sharene November 18, 2016 3:12 pm

Am I missing something? I have seen at least one comment that says that Saturday will be Shoji’s last time in the SSR. I understand him not wanting a big send off but I’d like to hear something official than in comment sections (I think it was the sports article, not here).

I think the year Natasha, Emma, Norene, Sibley, and Ross are all seniors will be a great year, btw. I like this year’s team also.

  72. kahuna November 18, 2016 4:22 pm

Dave is not going to announce anything now. It would be counterproductive. It would be nothing but a big distraction to this team. 100% focus should be on winning as much game as possible and nothing else.

Making the anmouncement(to return or not) is best made at season’s end.

  73. Cindy Luis November 18, 2016 6:12 pm

    71. don’t know what article you’re referring to. There’s been speculation by many, including some saying that ‘you never know, Saturday might be his last.’

As I’ve written, he didn’t want a farewell tour, will announce it when he’s ready. When it comes, I would think after the end of a season. He will want the school to have enough time to find the right replacement.

new thread up for Friday. it will end the suspense about the walk-on.
