mentioned on previous thread
Big West ruling: it will be recorded as a no contest, which results in neither a win nor a loss for either team.
IMHO, it creates a lopsided standing and is unfair to UH. but that’s just me.

lets go bows! perhaps let norene take a swing at it if she has to take the first contact.

  2. T103 November 4, 2016 6:50 pm

Bahaha oh how I wish I could upload pictures on here, someone just gave me a little paper red card that says “show the Long Beach coach the red card!” #savage

  3. Maverick November 4, 2016 6:57 pm

I guess it is unfair to UH if you expected UCI to win the replayed match. It’s also unfair to LBSU, who had a win taken away with no way to recoup it. If LBSU wins tonight, loses once more, wins their other matches, and UH wins its other matches, UH gets the AQ despite having been swept by LBSU. Both teams would have two losses but UH would have one more win. Not that this is a likely scenario…

Cindy, were you able to find out from BG or the Big West why that match isn’t going to be replayed?

  4. H-Man November 4, 2016 7:02 pm

I suppose, but as Dave said, they just have to win.

  5. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:05 pm

    4. all i was told was they were having trouble rescheduling it. but that was earlier in the week.

UH starting Burns, Mitchem, Iosia, Greeley, Tayllor, Kahakai, Maglio.

  6. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:06 pm

    3. wasn’t expecting anything. think it’s unfair in the standings to all involved.

  7. Mike Maxwell November 4, 2016 7:09 pm

Let’s Go Bows!! Just got up at 1am here in Orlando for the game!! Hope y’all do a good play-by-play cause it’s all I got- wish I was there to yell & wave a Canadian flag!!

  8. Warrior Dave November 4, 2016 7:11 pm

    Let’s Go Wahine!!

  9. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:13 pm

Burns with a kill. it’s 10-6. TO Beach

  10. z November 4, 2016 7:13 pm

    Burns really focused tonight.

  11. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:15 pm

Live stat not working. They are working on it. Radio having issues as well.

  12. Maverick November 4, 2016 7:16 pm

    7. Not that it will happen, but wouldn’t it be cool if they sang the Canadian national anthem during senior night when Maglio and then Burns are in their final seasons?

  13. andy November 4, 2016 7:17 pm

Wow, the girls all hitting like they had extra rice at the training table tonight.

  14. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:17 pm

    live stats back up. yay

  15. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:20 pm

Mitchem from 3-meters. UH up 17-11. TO Beach

  16. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 7:21 pm

    2. that was savage! hahahahahahahaha!!!

    1. norene tests the waters early.

  17. jmy November 4, 2016 7:23 pm

Oregon swept UW in Seattle, 25-8 in the 2nd set…

  18. z November 4, 2016 7:24 pm

Wow Taylor and Mitchem in the back row.

  19. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:24 pm

quite the service run by Mitchem, included an ace. it’s 23-12

  20. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:26 pm

    Burns ends it 25-13.

  21. z November 4, 2016 7:26 pm

Now they just have to keep it up.

  22. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 7:27 pm

dominate, crush, destroy. do not go to sleep wahine. lets go bows!

  23. Warrior Dave November 4, 2016 7:27 pm

Annie is in Beast Mode tonight!!

  24. jmy November 4, 2016 7:27 pm

How long before BG gets a yellow card…any takers?

  25. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:29 pm

Wahine hit .406. only hitting errors 2 by Taylor hitting wide twice, Iosia blocked on the dump and Burns mistimed her jump

  26. Mike Maxwell November 4, 2016 7:29 pm

    Natasha kills tha Aloha ball!!

  27. Don Williams November 4, 2016 7:29 pm

    25. Forget yellow…how long before he gets a red again?

  28. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:29 pm

    14. there’s always an over under.

  29. Maverick November 4, 2016 7:30 pm

    24. If UH continues to dominate the match, no chance. If LBSU turns this into a close 4 or 5 setter, you’ll see one in one of those two sets.

  30. jmy November 4, 2016 7:30 pm

    27. Please no red cards tonight…Don’t give him any reason to protest the match!

  31. Maverick November 4, 2016 7:32 pm

    27. Ha ha, no chance for a red tonite. Match is for the AQ bid, IMO, so BG won’t jeopardize that opportunity. But a yellow, maybe if my scenario in 29 occurs and a really bad call goes against LBSU.

  32. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:33 pm

This is impressive. UH up 7-1. TO Beach

  33. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:34 pm

    30. Beach said they would protest that red card. Big West said it wasn’t happening. so there is no protest from last Friday.

  34. z November 4, 2016 7:34 pm

    Smoooth!

  35. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 7:35 pm

    23. annie taking command!

  36. z November 4, 2016 7:35 pm

    We own the middle.

  37. Mike Maxwell November 4, 2016 7:35 pm

Dominators!! The place is like a snake pit tonite!!

  38. Maverick November 4, 2016 7:36 pm

    32. Nice to see a focused UH team play to their potential. Given the opponent, some of the best volleyball I’ve seen them play this year. Annie is on another level. And the middle attack is what we have all hoped it would be.

  39. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:36 pm

two aces by Taylor. it’s 10-1. TO Beach

  40. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 7:37 pm

    and so is nikki!

  41. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:45 pm

There are red cards in the arena

  42. z November 4, 2016 7:45 pm

    Kahakai with the dig.

  43. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 7:52 pm

UH wins 25-15 on a Beach NV, standing O as the team leaves the court

  44. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 7:52 pm

alright crush. now time to destroy. paybacks a beach!

  45. jmy November 4, 2016 7:53 pm

Now the big test: Can UH come out after the intermission with the same focus & intensity? Beach will play tougher out of pride.

  46. Mike Maxwell November 4, 2016 7:54 pm

    Natasha kills ANOTHER Aloha ball!!

  47. Maverick November 4, 2016 7:55 pm

Who would have thought UH would dominate a match in which Nikki Taylor is hitting .000? Left side is dominant tonight, and the middle is very alive.

  48. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 7:56 pm

that kill by emily. kill, dig my ball? kill!

  49. z November 4, 2016 7:57 pm

Like how Dave is subbing tonight.

  50. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 8:00 pm

Fey defends his hardest hit ball title.
notice not a peep about Granato tonight. 5-0-91 solo block

  51. Bleachercoach November 4, 2016 8:02 pm

    That’s What I’m Talking ‘ bout!!
Playing awesome tonite in all phases….

  52. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 8:09 pm

Burns and Granato stuff Murray. It’s 9-5. TO Beach

  53. Mike Maxwell November 4, 2016 8:12 pm

Came out alittle slow but back in their groove now – groovy!!

  54. z November 4, 2016 8:14 pm

    Annie awesome.

  55. T103 November 4, 2016 8:15 pm

Man this is the line-up! I REALLY hope Dave keeps this. This faster tempo is really working and Annie from the outside is just money!

  56. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 8:18 pm

Shoji challenging that Taylor’s serve was in. and it is. Ace No. 5. it’s 19-10

  57. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 8:22 pm

    Beach calls timeout at 23-14.

  58. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 8:22 pm

2 more points. beach self destructing.

  59. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 8:23 pm

    55. nice challenge the ace by shoji.

  60. Mike Maxwell November 4, 2016 8:25 pm

2 more pts – WHAT a performance!! What were y’all worried about?? ‘Annie got her gun!!’ & NATASHA!! The Force was with her!!

  61. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 8:25 pm

    UH wins 25-16.

  62. andy November 4, 2016 8:26 pm

Awesome to see Annie consistently hitting from the outside at full speed. Okay, here’s some nitpicking. 13 kills and no errors, but I’d love to see her learn to take a full swing at long sets coming from out of system .

  63. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 8:27 pm

ekahi elua aloha! dominate, crush, destroy. congratulations to na wahine!!!

  64. Vollyman November 4, 2016 8:28 pm

Wow. LBSU goes out on three straight service errors. Yikes!

Great win for the Wahine though! Nearly flawless dominance.

  65. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 8:30 pm

annie is a legion. 13 kills, rate of fire in the 60s percentile.

  66. Ashley November 4, 2016 8:32 pm

couldn’t come here because I was too busy CELEBRATING! & cheering on these girls. magnificent performance all around. not the match i expected but i am not complaining, i will rest easy tonight for sure. Hawaii truly did all the little things, and it was those little things that frustrated the beach. so glad they SMASHED lbsu.

  67. cruisecontrol November 4, 2016 8:43 pm

Whew! This dismantling of LBSU was so quick we have more time now to replay it over and over and over.

  68. Warriorfan November 4, 2016 8:44 pm

    Starting to gel.
Annie and Natasha are improving so much.

  69. kk808 November 4, 2016 8:47 pm

Awesome match! Hope they bring that same intensity tomorrow night! Go Wahine!!!

  70. Connor November 4, 2016 9:02 pm

I said all season: keep Annie on outside. Now you can see her make the whole team better. Having her in the middle is a luxury that Hawaii cannot afford.

  71. Ashley November 4, 2016 9:11 pm

anyone still on cloud 9? i sure am, so much so that i can’t fall asleep. this match was sweet sweet revenge, you could see the smiles from the Hawaii fans and players all around. someone said Hawaii would sweep the beach, honestly i believed that could, but not in such dominant fashion. i was looking forward to this rematch, and so glad these girls came to perform and win. awesome win, let’s celebrate for a little longer

  72. T103 November 4, 2016 9:28 pm

Dang, Annie hit .619 with 13 kills, ZERO ERRORS on 21 tries.. Thats CRAZY!! Someone was telling me that Annie on the outside made all the difference. blanked the team out. Whatever it was, I’m glad we got payback and in such huge fashion too! I was sooooo worried headed into this match b/c I just remember LBSU libber was EVERYWHERE and they had our number that last match. Glad we just stuck it to them this time. Congrats Wahine! Lets continue this ‘fire’ and end the season well and lets head into post-season play ladies!

  73. Warriorfan November 4, 2016 9:29 pm

Eh kinda expected this i will be on cloud nine after the wahine advance to the final four!

  74. darkfire35 November 4, 2016 9:32 pm

To all the Wahine faithful, yes, I know that hindsight is 20/20, but just imagine if Hawaii was playing tonight against Washington, UCLA or Kansas…You know they would have dominated like they did tonight. Hawaii has the talent, Dave found the lineup and we are on our way to the final 4!!! For goodness sake, Annie, like I’ve heard others say, “spike like you do in practice!” She did that tonight and everyone was going, OMG!!! GO BOWS!!!!

  75. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 9:36 pm

    71. wahine got their revenge and vengeance dominating.

    72. annie was a juggernaut and made na wahine the most substantial plays ever seen in recent times!

  76. tongo November 4, 2016 9:37 pm

Great match! Give Norene credit for setting smart. Maglio came back with a vengeance and destroyed the Beach! Mitchem just destroyed the ball – just like Tom said she could! Great blocking from Granato while bringing the heat. We desperately needed Burns to deliver and Natasha did against the big Beach MHs. Our backcourt was outstanding. Great job Kahakai, Smith and Anderson. And then there is Ms Taylor – what else can we say about you Nikki. Congrats coaches and the other players who all did a great job of getting the team so prepared – it showed! For us long suffering old timers, this was so satisfying. Thank you.

  77. Bleachercoach November 4, 2016 9:39 pm

I knew Hawaii could Sweep LBS if they could play just half as good as they dominated tonite! Yup like everyone mentioned, Annie on the Left makes this team that Postseason look much more promising ..Tonite the TEAM with URGENCY and that POTENTIAL they truly possess!! This was truly a TOTAL TEAM AND COACHING EFFORT….Way to Go Bows!!! Don’t forget to wear “PINK” tomorrow nite everyone!! Shaka

  78. Bleachercoach November 4, 2016 9:40 pm

Oops I meant played with URGENCY

  79. Ron November 4, 2016 9:40 pm

I think that this team tonight was the team that most of us envisioned at the start of the season before the injury bug hit. The passing of Savannah, Kalei and Emma allowed Noreen to play her best game of the year in terms of selection and placement Everyone on on the front line played well. Annie and Emily really stepped it up. It was a total team effort, including the coaches that brought this about. It was such a joy to watch this team play at such a high level. I can’t wait for tomorrow to see if our “dream team” has finally arrived.

  80. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 9:54 pm

Agree that everything went right for Hawaii tonight. Long Beach was someone injured, Libero Harward had been in the hospital apparently earlier in the week, not sure why. grahovac was hurt, didn’t play against Fullerton. Shoji said they planned for 2 lineups and that Hall did a great job at preparing the team with his scouting report. Hawaii’s passing the best it has been, which allowed for Iosia to run that diversified attack.
Shoji said Mitchem hit with no fear tonight and that they’d look at using her more in the back row, playing six rotations, since the hit the BIC so well.

  81. T103 November 4, 2016 9:58 pm

Cindy, so was LBSU libero not playing tonight? And Grahovac not playing either or they just were a bit not up to par b/c of injuries/illness earlier in the week but played tonight?

  82. Cindy Luis November 4, 2016 9:59 pm

    81. see answer in 80 Harward played in all 3 sets, 8 digs, you barely noticed her. Grahovac 3-1-9. the biggest thing was Hawaii’s serving keeping them off balance. Murray hit negative 5-6-21. they couldn’t run the middle. Xue had 1 kill.

  83. jmy November 4, 2016 10:29 pm

…and Maverick called it: No cards for BG!

  84. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 10:56 pm

    83. shoji did present the green card to BGs point challenging the ace, does that count?

also when bg complained about his player hitting out, the fans showed plenty red cards. #savage

  85. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 11:00 pm

    76. norene did a phenomenal job setting tonight. she even took a swing, though unsuccessful and maybe a bit early, she tested the waters investing one point to keep the beach honest and pay more attention to her rather her hitters.

  86. jmy November 4, 2016 11:10 pm

Question: If LBSU finishes second in the BW, do they get an at-large into the NCAA tourney?

  87. warriorfan November 4, 2016 11:14 pm

    86. Definitely not, they have too many bad losses.

  88. Maverick November 4, 2016 11:20 pm

    86. LBSU’s RPI rank is around 60 right now, and four of their next five opponents have losing records. No chance, they are watching this year.

  89. jmy November 4, 2016 11:34 pm

Big matchup tomorrow: UCSB at UCI…should be good…

  90. Maverick November 4, 2016 11:36 pm

As an aside, Penn State’s est. RPI rank is 23. Unusual situation if they aren’t hosting, but this is a down year for them. Same for USC.

  91. jmy November 4, 2016 11:37 pm

    90. With the way the NCAA loves PSU, I’d be willing to bet that they will host…

  92. Maverick November 4, 2016 11:42 pm

If PSU’s resume and RPI rank don’t improve, such a scenario would prove to me that systemic favoritism exists for that program. IMO, PSU hasn’t earned a seed yet, not by a long shot.

  93. jmy November 4, 2016 11:50 pm

    92. Time running out for that…in terms of tough opponents, they only have OSU & Nebraska, both on the road…

  94. kimo browner November 4, 2016 11:56 pm

I do not believe it would have mattered who played for the Beach last night.
The wahine came out for the first time this year and performed with energy and heart. They smiled and laughed, but they were focused to draw blood and go for the throat. The wahine were like pit bulls and once they pounced on the Beach they locked their jaws on their prey and nothing could shake their deadly grip.
Staff did a good job too in prepping the crew.
Coach Shoji said himself in the post game interview he was surprised by the wahine performance and added they played their best game of the season.
I know I have been banging the wahine , without naming players, for under performing and lacking heart. As we saw tonite, they are capable of performing at a higher level. It is also true that Annie Mitchem’s performance was inspiring and gave Noreen more options. Maglio was on. Burns played fearlessly. Nikki was all over the court and and displayed All America skills. Passing was awesome the block was all over the net.
Look, Annie made a huge difference, BUT everyone on court played as ONE. IT took over 20 games for this team to finally hit stride…and if they continue this play with hearts-of-a-lion we are talking about final four.

  95. tako November 5, 2016 6:21 am

Thought Emma Smith a great job passing the ball while she was in, helped to propel the offense.

  96. Ron November 5, 2016 7:04 am

“The white-out turned into a wipe-out” Cindy’s first line in her Star-Advertizer report says it all. Kimo, your synopsis was right on the money. Tako, I am glad that you saw what I saw in Emma Smith’s play. Just a great night and I will watch it again several times.

  97. Pot of Gold November 5, 2016 7:04 am

As all have said this was a great victory for several reasons. Not to take anything away from the extremely high level of play, but you can’t expect that level to be reached from here on out. What we do know now is the level the team can play to.

With that experience it is positive growth in this year’s team, which had been lacking until last night. Not very often a team finds that level in a playoff match without displaying it in season play. That was a playoff game last night, it bides well for playoff expectations.

Last night was a needed demonstration from all facets of the game. To see LBS players look lost with zero answers, knowing that their season was on the line, was as good a payback as anyone could have wanted.

Hawaii simply out muscled LBS, showing who the real contenders were. Can’t find a fault in any aspect of the game including Shoji’s challenge. Very impressive, very impressive indeed.

  98. Andy November 5, 2016 7:28 am

    85. At the beginning of the season you said you wanted noise when Noreen was serving? Boom! Now you got some major noise at the Stan. I don’t live in Hawaii — so how did all the noise get started? Has it been building over the weeks, or did it all happen last night?

  99. noblesol November 5, 2016 9:39 am

#98. Last night the crowd followed the lead of the Men’s Volleyball team and amplified their efforts, when they started their rhythmic clapping and cheering that they do for their servers. Coach Milan Zarkovic reportedly brought that to the men’s team as something they did on his teams in Europe. Nikki seemed to feed off it, and LBS looked a bit like deer in the headlights during her serving runs.

  100. tongo November 5, 2016 9:50 am

#97 Well said and could not agree with you more. The table is set for the final push and it looks pretty good. Hoping the team and staff will stay laser focus in final month to significantly bake-in the level of play that we saw tonight so it becomes more of the norm and not the exception. Congrats to the entire team – A and B, for outstanding job.

  101. Maverick November 5, 2016 9:52 am

Interesting top ten ranking from the NCAA to come on Wednesday. A preview of teams who are likely to host.

    http://www.ncaa.com/news/volleyball-women/article/2016-11-04/womens-volleyball-division-i-committee-reveal-top-ten

  102. noblesol November 5, 2016 9:55 am

Not sure who gets credit for passing around the red cards to the crowd last night. It was a excellent idea and well executed. Along with the rest, I had great fun waving my card any time it looked like BG was warming up to get animated. Alas, he stayed relatively under control and didn’t bait the crowd or refs. Maybe the red card stunt helped with that, but more likely it was the dominate play of HI that kept the refs calls pretty much a non-factor. There wasn’t much close play to protest.

  103. noblesol November 5, 2016 10:10 am

Pink night tonight. I’m hoping the Men’s VB team shows up again, this time in their pink uni’s. Hey, they’re guys, some of them might feel a little self-conscious about it, but it’s in a good cause. Showing a willingness to endure a little embarrassment in supporting a greater good is something they can wear as a badge of honor. The same for the rest of the men in the crowd tonight… Pink it up!

  104. warriorwahine November 5, 2016 11:20 am

    55. you said it. that line up is money! play relentlessly.

  105. warriorwahine November 5, 2016 11:27 am

    64. beach numerous service errors and self destructed to the end. they were totally discombobulated.

  106. SS November 5, 2016 11:28 am

#102 – My friend came up with the red card (the larger one) idea on Wednesday and cut several hundred cards. He passed them out to people in the lower bowl area, the band and the men’s volleyball team.

There was a little girl sitting behind the Beach’s bench in Set 2 and was waving it and it caught Brian G’s eye. Too funny.

It was a great game. Go Wahine!

  107. Warriorfan November 5, 2016 11:58 am

i love the warrior team they seem like a bunch of fun close group of guys and they make the best cheerleaders lol
It was fun seeing joe worsley hit in the bounce contest too.

‘Grats to Wahine for a great effort; a few observations:

    a. more sets to the middles, NB had only 10 sets and the middles together had 30/95 sets, only 31%,
    b. NB may wish to cut the ball every now and then,
    c. rest NT tonight, her poor stats may be reflecting the hurting knees, shoulder, and elbow,
    d. Staff prep was extraordinary, continue same effort for all teams (film study, cut-ups, player briefs). Blocking was on-point most of the night.

    98. there was ‘Boom!’ when norene (or nikki) served? wahine plays as well as the crowd was so loud i had oversight that. darn it!

    99. we need more of that, as well as a ‘Boom!’ the serving rhythmic clapping/cheering was missing since 2013 last seen with emily hartong and meeettss

94-97. well said. especially 94 fantastic synopsis.

    102. it was an awesome idea for those red cards whoever designed them. can someone post a picture of said red card? it will also be useful in the future for home match vs the beach to remind bg his shame. #savage

so impressed by hawaii’s play last night, starting out strong and then maintaining the high level of play.

mitchem looked the most comfortable she’s ever been on the outside all season… hope she can keep it up and get even better!

maglio really bounced back from a poor showing the first time out. and kahakai too had a solid night compared to the first mtg with lbsu.

taylor had a quiet night hitting, but was phenomenal serving and blocking. and with the opposing defense leaning her way, it opened things up for the other hitters.

and iosia took advantage, setting a balanced offense, giving granato 1-on-1 looks, and even getting burns involved enough for the beach to respect her as an attacking option.

great night! and an emotional win for the team and the fans! … let’s hope for no letdown against csun tonight …

    108. No actual “boom”, but finally a lot of noise and a big home team advantage. I hope this keeps up for tonight’s game and the future.

Noblesol, Frankly I felt the red cards were in poor taste for Hawaii fans.

#113. sorry you feel that way… not. I kept mine, I foresee using it again on my H1 daily commute.

    new thread up

    113. thought it pretty funny actually. pretty mild compared to other places.
Gimmillaro was very subdued last night. The Beach’s after-match locker room chat lasted longer than the match, which was 78 minutes, the shortest of the year for the Wahine. who would have thought.
