Anderson named academic all-district

Congrats to Anderson for academic honor. She’s in the honors program for biology. now eligible for Academic All-American. one of six to be named all-district 8. Others are from BYU, Cal, Oregon, Fresno State and USC

Anderson is just the fifth Rainbow Wahine to be recognized by CoSIDA for the prestigious award. Lily Kahumoku (2003), Kanoe Kamana’o (2004, ’05), Tara Hittle (2008), and Kanani Danielson (2009, ’10, ’11) are the only other women’s volleyball players to receive the honor. She is the only player representing the Big West Conference.

Ran into Joe Worsley last night. He said he was really stoked his baby brother Gage would be on the men’s team next year. when I said I understood he was the best libero in the 2017 class, Joe said he was the best libero in the country from when he played with Joe on U18 club team

was told there was only one NLI next week for me. don’t know if that means DJ McInerny is a walk-on.
Wahine expect to sign
Janelle Gong (5-9 DS/OH) Campolindo HS
Sophia Howling (6-2 Middle) Venice HS
Shaney Lipscomb (6-1 Middle/Opposite) Cathedral Catholic
Skyler Williams (6-2 Middle) Mayfield HS

forgot to mention Thursday’s Top 25 result
Arizona def. 25) USC 25-23, 18-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-7

    Congrats to Clare,
Little bummed UH warriors aren’t signing anyone else, was hoping they would get Jasper or Hogland.

  2. po'okela November 3, 2016 1:48 pm

    janelle gong?

do we really need a DS on scholarship? i hope she’s walking on.

    3. Saw that a week ago or so , figured it had to be one of the local d2 schools, she doesn’t look like a d1 player, or maybe she’s a walk on or beach player?

    2. Of course Gong is a walk on they already have Kahakai on scholarship, come on dude!

  5. Cindy Luis November 3, 2016 2:23 pm

    1. sounded like they only have 1 NLI for next week. Have you seen how deep the roster is now? they are very young.

  6. Cindy Luis November 3, 2016 2:25 pm

2-3. they could always be walk-ons. never said all 4 initially mentioned were on scholarship since Hawaii only has 3 to give. and believe those are to Lipscomb, Williams and Howling.
Ross took part int her school’s signing ceremony but isn’t on scholarship.

  7. uhfan November 3, 2016 2:30 pm

I hope she’s a walk on. Not needed at all IMO but whatever because unless she’s got Kanani Danielson type of skills 5’11 OH should be a thing of the past tbh. Wahine need a terminator OH with Taylor graduating. They dont have one on the current roster and next year aint looking all that great either unless we get a big time transfer.

  8. Cindy Luis November 3, 2016 2:33 pm

    7. as mentioned, the three available scholarships look to be going to Howling, Lipscomb and Williams.

  9. bowsfan November 3, 2016 2:44 pm

Big west has the Long beach-Irvine games as cancelled, prior to that postponed.

  10. Bleachercoach November 3, 2016 3:01 pm

    7. The only girl I really am impressed at that 5’11 under stature is Emma Ogilvie from Iolani….Sky’s (or it Skies) the Limit for this High School Freshman Phenom…She is a flat out Superb Athlete IMO….

  11. Cubicle1126 November 3, 2016 3:03 pm

it looks like the lbsu-uc irvine match from 9/24 that was protested will not, in fact, be replayed. it will go down as a “no contest.”

i haven’t seen anything from the big west. but this info was posted on lbsu’s web site: http://www.longbeachstate.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/110316aaa.html

  12. Bleachercoach November 3, 2016 3:03 pm

Congratulations Clare Marie Anderson…That is the epitome for an athlete to have an honor like that…That speaks volumes of your character…I also that you are really down to earth and level-head….What a balance!!! You must come from great parents….shaka!

  13. Cubicle1126 November 3, 2016 3:08 pm

congrats to anderson! a very nice honor!

  14. Hodad November 3, 2016 3:15 pm

Number 10, it’s Elena. She is a freak. If she grows an inch or two more, I predict she will be the best woman to come out of Hawaii. She is all of 14 and was a joy to watch in States.

  15. Bleachercoach November 3, 2016 3:25 pm

    14…Thanks for that correction…

  16. kahuna November 3, 2016 3:28 pm

The NO CONTEST match against Irvine is really a win for the Beach since it will not go down as a loss for them as could possibly be. Irvine is out of running for the title so there is no incentive for them to re- play the match. LB now have no reason to replay the game too since they can avoid having another “L” in their loss column. I think the BW should have forced the match to be completed. Its not like they cannot get together again. They are like what???….45 minutes apart?

  17. blunite November 3, 2016 3:31 pm

    4. Scholarships are not permanent. Keani Passi once had a UH scholarship, but she left when she lost it. Not sure about Ginger Long’s scholarship, which was not extended for her graduate year.

It’s a hard and sometimes cruel business. Eminent coaches do not let emotions interfere with their drive to a national championship. For example, Victoria Pilar, Texas OH, left for Arkansas after she was supplanted by a freshman. Russ Rose sat all his roster DS’ in favor of a freshman.

  18. Pot of Gold November 3, 2016 3:32 pm

    12. Nice of you put the emphasize back on track here. Anderson should be applauded for her Wahine commitment and her academic standard. Afterall it should be the focus of every athlete to get the most out of their education while attending post secondary institution. That Anderson is recognized for her dedication should help inspire future Whine players to follow suit.

  19. blunite November 3, 2016 3:40 pm

    RE: Scholarships

Coach may be able to work something out with Laura Beeman, women’s basketball coach. For example, a player could come in and play both sports (i.e. Kalei Adolpho and Megan Huff) but be on a basketball scholarship. Ditto the women’s softball team.

  20. Ron November 3, 2016 4:30 pm

Congrats to Clair-Marie, the epitome of the student-athlete. I think the three middles coming in have great potential. I would train Williams to play left side after watching her video and Libscomb has already trained on the right. Greeley should be good to go next year, Sibley has the potential and Granato will still be able to pound the opposing blockers arms into mince meat. Back to this year. We are better than LBS even with our injuries and we will beat them! P.S. We all call this “Cindy’s blog” and that is what it is . I miss it when its down and I love it when it is up but I recognize her right to control the flow anyway she wants.

  21. Cubicle1126 November 3, 2016 4:40 pm

ron — good point. i too respect cindy’s right to control things here.

it’s a testament to the community that cindy (and really all of us who contribute) have built here … that it’s noticeable and it bothers us when it’s closed. so in a way it’s a compliment. we want the blog to be open so we can all come here to voice our joys and frustrations as fans. it’s just unfortunate that the rest of us are penalized for the actions of a few …

  22. Sickman Fraud November 3, 2016 4:53 pm

Not to demean the incoming freshmen but isn’t Hawaii going backwards? To replace Taylor’s 6’4″ and Mitchem’s 6’3″ the new recruits are 6’1″, 6’2″, and 6’2″.
To keep with the election theme, as other teams go higher, the NaWahine goes lower. Hope I’m proven wrong.

  23. Sickman Fraud November 3, 2016 5:00 pm

    PS; congratulations Clare Marie.

  24. warriorfan November 3, 2016 5:07 pm

    14. even if she doesn’t grow, she can be a world class libero, Oglivie has top notch quickness and ball control for her age.

Oglivie had 23 kills, hit . 367 with 22 digs in the championship last week
For comparison the best Kanani Danielson did was 14 kills, hit .500 with 9 digs in the 2007 championship as a senior. Mckenna Granato had 23 kills, 15 digs and hit .232 in the 2014 championship as a senior and Carly Kan had 17 kills, hit .130 and had 12 digs in the 2012 championship as a senior. TMO had 5 kills hit .000 with 5 digs as a senior in the 2011 championship.

  25. warriorfan November 3, 2016 5:08 pm

6’2 is tall enough, especially since Howling and Williams have serious athleticism and quickness. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are both quick learners and play sooner rather than later. Also Williams is listed as 6’3 by her club.

  26. T103 November 3, 2016 5:16 pm

Oh I’m so glad I remembered, it was bothering me that I couldn’t ask this, BUT does anyone remember hearing that Isaac Liva (I think I might have mis-spelt his name) transferred from HBA to Mililani and then graduated and was rumored to supposed to play for UH. Was that a rumor, or is it coming to pass?

  27. hollycow November 3, 2016 5:22 pm

Congratulations to Clare. Her hard studying work in the classroom is being well rewarded with this honor. Last year at the after the match potluck, I kidded her about always seeing her lugging a more than a foot thick backpack full of books for her studies.

  28. Warriorfan November 3, 2016 5:25 pm

    26. Liva is on the football team at UH.

  29. T103 November 3, 2016 5:31 pm

    28. Was he never planning on playing vball? Or did I get him playing football for vball?

  30. Warriorfan November 3, 2016 5:36 pm

    19. Lol i doubt that will ever work again as long as Beeman is the wahine basketball coach.

  31. LanaiBoy November 3, 2016 5:38 pm

Talking about awards…it is entirely possible that the State of Hawaii may have three Women’s Volleyball All-Americans (either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team) this season. The three locally-born are Nikki Taylor, of course, Carly Kan of Missouri, and Kalei Mau of Arizona. Admittedly Mau is a long-shot but the first two are already named as one last season as juniors. Penina Snuka made a name for herself too.

  32. Warriorfan November 3, 2016 5:40 pm

    31. kan’s stats aren’t looking so great this year Adora Anae has a better shot at making all american this year she is a shoe in first team all pac 12.

  33. noblesol November 3, 2016 6:45 pm

The LBS-Irvine no-contest result means an unbalanced schedule with HI playing 16 conference matches, and LBS and Irvine playing 15 each. No end of season conference tie is possible between UH and LB, or UH and Irvine. Either HI wins the auto qualifier, or LBS wins it, or they both go into a conference downward spiral and one of the other BW teams emerges from the pack to claim the NCAA playoff ticket.

The match tomorrow takes on even more importance for both teams. LBS can’t afford to equal HI in the loss column, as that means at the end of season that HI would have one more win and the better conference record. HI can’t fall behind LBS in the loss column, because after playing HI, the schedule for LBS is @CSUN, @Fullerton, and Riverside@home; these are games LBS is very unlikely to lose. HI has Northridge@home, @Irvine, @Davis, then Cal Poly@home and Santa Barbara@home. LBS has the much easier remaining schedule after HI.

Another way to look at it: if HI has a victory vs. LBS, they can control their fate; if they win out the rest of the way in conference, LBS can’t catch them or tie them. If LBS wins the match, they have a short, easier schedule and they would likely finish 14-1 (o.933) and HI could finish no better than 14-2 (0.875), and LBS would very likely be the auto qualifier.

Another loss to LBS@home, would likely knock HI out of the NCAA playoffs. Their RPI would likely make them at best ‘on the bubble’. two losses to LBS and no top 25 RPI wins, would likely swing the selection committee to rule them out.

Tomorrow’s match is a must win for both teams.

  34. AdmrVT November 3, 2016 7:36 pm

Wonder if it means only 1 LOI signee for early signing? There are 4 seniors: Mol, McKellar, Fey & Francisckovic.

Unless they are “re-allocating” among the returnees.

  35. Maverick November 3, 2016 8:26 pm

    33. Agree on one and done…one more loss and UH likely watches the tournament, even if it is ranked in the AVCA poll. Resume is not there, even though the schedule was set up for it. Interesting that a 19-2 UH team with a win against against LBSU is ranked in the top 20 of the RPI (approx. high teens), with an outside shot of hosting. Kansas has a worse SOS pct. than UH, but 4 top 25 and 7 top 50 RPI wins plus a 21-2 record gives them the 12th best RPI rank. Earned the bonus points. Three losses account for a 20+ place ranking drop. Harsh reality when you aren’t in the Big10 or Pac-12.

If team was fully healthy, probably wouldn’t have seen Annie on the outside at all. Been fun watching her hit over the outside block at times.

  36. Maverick November 3, 2016 9:31 pm

For the curious, former Wahine Megan Huff is redshirting this year at Utah WBB. Per her coach, “She’s an athletic 6-3 player with a great feel around the rim. This year is going to be huge for her to acclimate strength-wise to the Pac-12 and continue to work on her skills. She’ll be a good player for us in the future, for sure.”

  38. kahuna November 3, 2016 11:02 pm

Well….can you blame Beeman if she decided not to share players again?

She is actually getting the short end of the stick in the two sports set-up. Scholarship(s) is counted against basketball but Beeman only get the player only for half a season. Even that is not fair to her cause it would take that player a few weeks to get up to basketball shape.

Beeman have bills to pay and a program to o build too so she really doesn’t have to “bow” down to Shoji.

  39. noblesol November 4, 2016 1:36 am

With the unbalanced schedule, LBS could finish no worse in conference than 10-5 (0.667). This means that any other Big West team with more than five losses is eliminated from the NCAA playoff Auto Qualifier (AQ). The following teams now all have six or more losses, and they have no chance at the AQ: UCD, UCI, CSUN, UCR, UCF. This leaves only HI, LBS, Cal Poly, and UCSB still in contention.

With the unbalanced schedule and looking at the remaining conference schedule for LBS, LBS finishing any worse than 11-4 (0.733) is extremely unlikely, and any worse than 12-3, highly unlikely. Since LBS has the shorter easier remaining conference schedule compared to the remaining AQ contending teams, they become the benchmark team against which the remaining contenders determine their mathematical remaining chances.

UCSB currently has five losses, and have currently lost to LBS twice, HI once, and CP once. With the unbalanced conference schedule, I believe they are all but eliminated, with effectively zero chance that they win out and go 11-5, while LBS, HI, and Cal Poly all finish with five or more conference losses each. The Gauchos can pack it in, no NCAA’s for them this year.

Cal Poly currently has four losses, and have lost to LBS twice, and HI once. With the unbalanced conference schedule, I believe they too are effectively eliminated. They have to win out to go 12-4 (0.750). It is extremely likely that LBS will finish 12-3 or better, and extremely unlikely that HI finishes 12-4 or worse, and since Cal Poly needs to win out while both LBS and HI tank, it is beyond extremely unlikely they can win the conference and the AQ. The Mustangs still have a a very slim chance, but it’s a slim and effectively none chance.

Although HI and LBS can’t mathematically claim the Big West title with a win tonight, a win puts them in control of their fate. If LBS wins, then HI has win out and hope that CSUN, UCR, or UCF can beat LBS; small chance of that and it’s sorry HI maybe next year. If HI wins, then LBS has to win out and hope that HI loses at least two of its remaining matches against CSUN, UCI, UCD, Poly, and UCSB; again, small chance of that, and it’s time for LBS to starting thinking about their chances in beach volleyball.

  40. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 1:42 am

Congratulations Clare Marie Anderson! she the wahine on academic scholarship i believe right? this small (relatively speaking) blonde libero from punahou is quite a bookworm and steadies the ball! Congratulations to her!

  41. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 1:50 am

10, 14, 24. elena ogilvie is top notch. she relatively petite size has many more kills and more than digs with a powerful rate of fire hitting percentage and a high velocity swing. she can be an ‘attacking libero’/ds if she doesnt grow or she wouldnt have to (wasnt amy neal of texas outstanding and shes 5’ 9″/elena ogilvies present size now.) she has plenty of time to grow as needed.

  42. noblesol November 4, 2016 3:03 am

Most studies show that the by the time they reach 15, the majority of young woman will have reached their near final height. More than an inch of growth after that time would be out of the ordinary, it would be the extraordinary exception. More than an inch of growth past the age of 14 is only slightly less extraordinary, and not to be expected.

This chart sums it up pretty well:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Female_Stature_vs_Age.svg

  43. Hot November 4, 2016 4:39 am

    24. Could is the key word.

“Oglivie had 23 kills, hit . 367 with 22 digs in the championship last week
For comparison the best Kanani Danielson did was 14 kills, hit .500 with 9 digs in the 2007 championship as a senior.”

Oglivie has not played a single Division I collegiate match. Kanani Danielson is one of just three or four Wahine in school history to be named All-America four times. Enough said.

  44. Hot November 4, 2016 4:54 am

Also wanted to add that Oglivie’s 23 kills, 22 digs and .367 hitting percentage came in four sets.

Danielson’s 13 kills, 13 digs and .500 hitting percentage came in TWO sets.

  45. Warriorfan November 4, 2016 6:27 am

Excuse me but where in my post did I say Oglivie was better than Kanani ?? LoL nice try.
Kanani is obviously still the best local player in the past decade but I specifically remember Kanani would be subbed out of the backrow as a sophomore just to put in perpective how impressive Oglivies back row play as a freshmen is! She was the best ball control and digger on the floor in the championship amongst a bunch of players on Kam and Iolani that will end up being good ds and liberos in college.
Can’t wait to see how Oglivie keeps improving.

  46. Warriorfan November 4, 2016 6:33 am

38 well they weren’t her players originall lol
They went on scholarship for her program cause those are ncaa rules.

IMO its better to have a big with althetic ability for the big west season than not have them at all, beeman seems to have trouble recruiting athletic bigs.

  47. Warriorfan November 4, 2016 6:52 am

    44. Similar per set averages anyway I just posted stats in state title matches for some collegiate players . I wasn’t implying Oglivie was better than them all. But she was pretty damn impressive for a freshman no matter how many sets it took.

  48. Hot November 4, 2016 7:02 am

45, 47. So what exactly did you mean when you stated Oglivie’s stats “for comparison the best Kanani Danielson did” without specifying the number of sets they played? Nice try.

I also specifically remember that Danielson was taken out of the back row OCCASIONALLY because she had a problem with sweating/cooling down, not because she was unimpressive in the back row. To put in perspective, when she was injured/unable to play front row as a freshman in 2008, she was used as a DS. I also remember that she was only out during her serving rotation, but returned after the DS (Jayme Lee, a fantastic server and one of the quickest back row specialists for UH in recent years) finished her serving turn. Danielson, by all means, was a six-rotation passer/hitter who occasionally sat out during her serving turn to cool down.

  49. Warriorfan November 4, 2016 7:10 am

I was talking about Kanani as a sophomore in hs at Kam she didn’t play much backrow until her junior year but anyway.

looking forward to watching Oglivie keep improving and hopefully as a rainbow wahine someday !!!’

  50. Warriorfan November 4, 2016 7:12 am

    44. I meant those were the best stats all those players had in championship matches didn’t think it would be necessary to state how many sets it took to get those stats …:

  51. kahuna November 4, 2016 7:45 am

#22 don’t get hung up on size. If you look around the country. Some of the team’s best players are in the 6-0 to 6-2 range. UCLA Jordan Anderson is only 6-0. USC’s three most productive kill leaders are 5-11…..6-0 and 6-2. Wisconsin’s pin hitters are all in the 6-1 range. Washington’s Christie Jones in only 6-2. Kalei Mau is only 6-1. Oregon’s starting Opp is 6-2 Taylor Agost(former UH recuit). Sometimes athletic ability means more than size. If those coming in offer more athletic ability then we going have more versatility and maybe be able to be more diverse in our offense.

Stanford probably have the largest front line in women’s history. They have something like a 6-8…6-6…6-4 front line and they still lose to some middle of the conference PAC 12 teams so size no matter all the time.

  52. tongo November 4, 2016 7:49 am

I remember a girl in my middle school in the 8th grade who was getting hormone treatments to help her grow. Since this was a science class, the teacher thought it was okay for her to share. Test had indicated that taking certain hormones could help her grow. She looked average to me. It is something to consider – or not.

  53. rabbit ears November 4, 2016 8:26 am

What I heard is that hormone treatment will get you to your final height sooner. It will not make you taller. So basically it is for kids who are really small in their elementary school years.

  54. rabbit ears November 4, 2016 8:31 am

#51 your right. But they are super quick and athletic. We only get that type once in a while. Hartong was the last.

  55. blunite November 4, 2016 9:37 am

Kudos to CMA, an athlete and a scholar!

Hawaii needs a specialist in passing (serve receive). Hawaii has a slew of DS capable of digging balls but someone who passes “nails” consistently is hard to find. It will mean the difference between having a legitimate middle attack or just going high and outside on every ball.

  56. Rabbit ears November 4, 2016 4:24 pm

Great article on Maglio today. It will be interesting who coach plays at DS tonight.

  57. warriorwahine November 4, 2016 6:29 pm

    51. yeah that true about size. anderson smoke na wahine for 2 years and shes actually only 5’11” though they apparently changed her to 6’0″ (like mckenna perhaps?)

stanford had a 6’8″ that was too slow and was swept by lmu last year. the bigger the player is also slow and not ‘mechanically’ maneuverable in particular. compared to the smaller just sizeable enough is more nimble than mobile. the ridiculous tree is sizeable but is slow and weak.
