Enos’ silent productivity
By Brian McInnis on August 1, 2014You get your fair share of trash talking and complaining about calls in the College Summer League — and that’s just from the coaches. Then again, some guys just go out and play.

Well, if you haven’t heard by now, Hawaii point guard Keith Shamburger is picking up his ball and going home. If you drew up a list of likely candidates to leave early right after the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, Shamburger wouldn’t have been near the top; his starting job seemed relatively secure. But now UH heads into the fall requiring a new starting ballhandler for the fourth straight year. Less than two weeks ago, Shamburger was hyping up some […]
Hawaii will look to make it a second straight win tonight at 7 p.m. against New Orleans of the Southland Conference at the Stan Sheriff Center. Our Jason Kaneshiro was on hand for Tuesday’s practice, the last full session before the game. Here were some of Jason’s observations: ————— Hawaii head coach Gib Arnold issued a couple of challenges during Tuesday’s practice at the Stan Sheriff Center. Both were answered as the Rainbow Warriors continued preparations for Wednesday’s game against […]
It’s nothing to get too alarmed about — yet — but Hawaii backup point guard Quincy Smith will get an MRI on his back on Tuesday, UH coach Gib Arnold told the Star-Advertiser’s Jason Kaneshiro after practice on Monday. Smith has experienced lower back discomfort since the preseason, though he hasn’t missed a game yet. He took part in most of Monday’s practice, and rested near the end along with forward Isaac Fotu. “Quincy’s going to get an MRI tomorrow, his […]
It’s that time again, ladies and gentlemen. College basketball teams across the country tipped off action on Friday, and UH is no different tonight against Tennessee State in the 49th Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic. Remember, it’s a 6:30 p.m. start for the Rainbow Warriors against the Tigers. New Mexico State and Western Michigan follow, likely tipping that one off around 9 p.m. Senior guard Brandon Spearman will miss this tournament, and it’s probable backup point guard Quincy Smith […]
Hawaii coach Gib Arnold indicated earlier this preseason that he would make any determinations about this season’s redshirt players after the Brigham Young-Hawaii exhibition. Well, that time has arrived. The most logical candidate is true freshman Niko Filipovich, who spoke of a willingness to redshirt in the summer. But UH’s recent injuries to guards Quincy Smith (back) and Brandon Spearman (ankle) have affected UH’s depth, meaning Filipovich will not be wearing street clothes, at least for the Outrigger Hotels and […]
Hawaii basketball’s Green & White Scrimmage experiment on Saturday wasn’t perfect (it could have used game jerseys that were, you know, green and white), but it was a fair platform to introduce the 2013-14 Rainbow Warriors without any set national date for Midnight Madness events this year. There was more actual basketball action than you could ask for in previous iterations of the Ohana Hoopfest/Twilight Ohana/Midnight Ohana. The crowd of about 1,000 was also respectable, and the team and coaches […]
Christian Standhardinger was the favorite to repeat as “King of the Beach” champion today, for good reason. He’s got a ridiculous motor. He’s insanely competitive. And he’s a little sneaky. Well, that all came into play in the Hawaii senior forward’s narrow victory over the field in Saturday morning’s UH basketball preseason fitness competition at Queens Beach in Waikiki. Standhardinger edged senior center Davis Rozitis by a point, and redshirt freshman Dyrbe Enos, holding it down for the local boys, […]
