The gates hath opened

By Brian McInnis on January 20, 2014

The doors opened up again for Hawaii basketball practice on Monday, coming off Saturday’s 100-69 demolition of UC Riverside. Whatever concerns existed about team focus coming off an 0-2 Big West road trip were apparently solved during a week of closed-door practices preceding the UCR game, because the Rainbow Warriors displayed a killer instinct against the woeful and overmatched Highlanders. However, fifth-year senior center Davis Rozitis missed that game for uncharacteristic academic reasons. The graduate student is a two-time academic […]

Closing up shop

By Brian McInnis on January 15, 2014

In a somewhat expected move, Hawaii coach Gib Arnold said after team practice today that the remaining UH practices this week would be closed to media and the public. Tuesday’s session in Gym 1, the team’s first coming off its 0-2 Big West road trip was also closed. Arnold has closed UH practices in the past three years when his teams have hit difficult stretches of losses, as well as during one preseason while new players got accustomed to things. […]

Gameday (Kauai edition): Chaminade

By Brian McInnis on December 14, 2013

By default, you have to be on upset alert anytime the Chaminade Silverswords take the floor against a Division I opponent. The fact that today’s Hawaii-Chaminade game takes place on Kauai — in what is believed to be the first NCAA basketball game on the island — adds another wrinkle to the proceedings. Reminder: There is no TV or streaming video for this one. It will be on 1420-AM and there will be live stats at goswords.com. This matchup between […]

Gameday: Northern Arizona

By Brian McInnis on December 7, 2013

There’s snow on the ground at 7,000 feet in Flagstaff, Ariz. Hawaii will have to overcome the elements in addition to the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona today. Tipoff is in about 1 hour at 2 p.m. Hawaii time. You can see the game on Oceanic Ch. 246 (that’s a premium channel) or streaming online for free at nau-tv.com or watchbigsky.com. UH goes for the ‘Jackfecta today, with its women’s basketball (74-66) and soccer (1-0) teams having won in Flagstaff already […]

Fotu rests up

By Brian McInnis on December 3, 2013

Hawaii may have played Isaac Fotu with a fractured bone in his hand against Montana last week, but that doesn’t mean the Rainbow Warriors are taking any chances on their stud forward in the grind of everyday practices. Fotu has remained out of team sessions since injuring the hand in the blowout New Orleans game, including the first two practices this week, Monday and Tuesday. UH leaves for Flagstaff, Ariz., on Thursday to settle in before Saturday’s BracketBusters return game […]

Smith to get MRI

By Brian McInnis on November 25, 2013

It’s nothing to get too alarmed about — yet — but Hawaii backup point guard Quincy Smith will get an MRI on his back on Tuesday, UH coach Gib Arnold told the Star-Advertiser’s Jason Kaneshiro after practice on Monday. Smith has experienced lower back discomfort since the preseason, though he hasn’t missed a game yet. He took part in most of Monday’s practice, and rested near the end along with forward Isaac Fotu. “Quincy’s going to get an MRI tomorrow, his […]

Hilo Fun & Gun redux

By Brian McInnis on November 23, 2013

Hawaii ramped up its offense to its highest gear yet against an overmatched opponent on Thursday night. It made for an aesthetically pleasing display as the Rainbow Warriors put up 114 points — their seventh-most ever — and had their third-largest margin of victory at 51 points over Hawaii Hilo. UH pushed the pace throughout and got 12 different players in the scoring column. Freshmen Dyrbe Enos (nine points) and Jack Hackman (three) scored for the first time in their […]

Back to basics

By Brian McInnis on November 19, 2013

A return home from Kansas City meant a return to basic principles Monday for the Hawaii basketball team. Namely, defensive principles. UH had trouble containing Missouri’s athletic perimeter players in a 92-80 defeat on Saturday. It marked the second straight game the Rainbow Warriors gave up 90-plus points, both losses. “We actually did nothing but defense today,” UH coach Gib Arnold said. “I like how our offense is coming along, I like the tempo. We’re the 19th-ranked team in the […]
