Return home = return to form?

By Brian McInnis on January 14, 2013

Hey all, there won’t be a UH hoops story in Tuesday’s edition of the newspaper. Thus, I figured it’s a good time to use the blog format to help answer some of the burning questions some of you have had based on the road losses at UC Irvine and Long Beach State last week. UH (9-7, 3-2) plays at home vs Pacific (9-7, 3-1) on Thursday and UC Davis (5-10, 1-3) on Saturday. A 2-0 week would vault the fourth-place […]

Diamond Head Classic time

By Brian McInnis on December 21, 2012

For the first time, the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic field equals, if not surpasses, what the EA Sports Maui Invitational fielded in the same season. In the fourth HADHC,  No. 4 Arizona and No. 18 San Diego State headline a very strong field. Hawaii will probably have to get past Miami (receiving votes) in the first round on Saturday to have a shot at one or both of the ranked teams, but you never know for sure. Ole Miss, […]

Arnold, Taylor's Pepperdine history

By Brian McInnis on December 8, 2012

Hawaii head coach Gib Arnold and associate head coach Benjy Taylor go back a little bit with UH’s opponent tonight, Pepperdine of the West Coast Conference. Arnold “cut his assistant coaching teeth” there, in his words, from 1999 to 2003.  Taylor assisted there alongside him for the 2000-01 season. Pepperdine won more games during that span than at any other four-year period in school history. The Waves made the NCAA Tournament twice while Arnold was there, in 2000 and 2002. […]

Season opener blog blowout

By Brian McInnis on November 9, 2012

It’s that time ladies and gentlemen. The UH basketball 2012-13 season tips off tonight against Maryland-Eastern Shore at the Stan Sheriff Center. Here are some things to keep an eye on in this one: >> Vander Joaquim’s minutes. It’s looking like the big fella will play, but the question is, how much? Does Gib Arnold give him spot minutes off the bench? When he’s in, which other bigs will he play alongside? >> Point guard play. It was a struggle […]

Joaquim back in the fray

By Brian McInnis on November 5, 2012

Vander Joaquim is back. Or at least getting there. The Hawaii senior center got in some full contact work during Monday’s practice — which, unfortunately, happened to be closed to the media again. No direct observations available. He also apparently got in some work during an incognito team session on Saturday after a film session breaking down the 75-67 exhibition win over Hawaii Pacific the night before. Joaquim said he’d be ready to play for the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic, […]

UH frontcourt takes another hit

By Brian McInnis on October 22, 2012

Former UH hoops player Bill Amis, who will be a member of OC Sports’ pre and postgame UH men’s basketball shows this season, quickly demonstrated a keen media eye upon his arrival at the Stan Sheriff Center on Monday. “Where’s Christian?” Amis wondered within minutes of studying the Rainbow Warriors’ zone defense drills. It didn’t take too long to find out. Christian Standhardinger arrived halfway through the session in street clothes and his right elbow taped up thoroughly. The junior […]

No lineup determinations yet

By Brian McInnis on October 20, 2012

We’re just under two weeks out from the Hawaii men’s basketball team’s exhibition against Hawaii Pacific on Nov. 2, and under three weeks from the regular-season opener vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore on Nov. 9. That means lineup and rotation tweaks get a little less experimental and a little more solidified as the days advance. But the Rainbow Warriors are not solid or set there yet, UH coach Gib Arnold said after Saturday’s practice. “I’m mixing and matching,” Arnold responded to a […]

Getting the point

By Brian McInnis on October 14, 2012

One of the most interesting storylines around the Hawaii men’s basketball team all season will be point guard play. Jace Tavita has assumed the mantle of the starter after coming in from Utah nearly two years ago and redshirting since that time. Barring something drastic, he’ll get the bulk of the time at the position. But you can’t, obviously, have him responsible for all 40 minutes every game of the season. With no other traditional point guards on the roster […]
