UH hoops practice preview

By Brian McInnis on September 24, 2013

Practice? Y’all want to talk about practice? Already? Believe it or not (I can’t), it’s that time again, ladies and gents. The Hawaii men’s basketball team starts up full practices for the 2013-14 season on Friday — a good two and a half weeks ahead of the traditional start to practices of past seasons around Oct. 15. The NCAA bumped up the time coaches get to spend with their players before the season, giving them 30 days of full practices […]

Arnold speaks at QB Club

By Brian McInnis on June 25, 2013

Hawaii coach Gib Arnold entertained the Honolulu Quarterback Club with some general UH hoops updates on Monday. Here were some of the main items discussed at the Maple Garden Restaurant. The food was tasty. >> He led off by calling Christian Standhardinger and Isaac Fotu “two of the best forwards in the conference” as part of why he is anticipating the coming Big West season. >> Fotu turned down at least one fairly lucrative pro contract from a team in […]

Allen, Nevels arrive // Banquet time

By Brian McInnis on April 3, 2013

Hawaii basketball recruiting targets Corey Allen and Garrett Nevels of Mount San Antonio College (Calif.) are expected to attend the Rainbow Warriors’ team banquet tonight at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom. They’re believed to be primary targets among UH’s top five recruiting prospects for next season. The guard pair arrived in Honolulu late Tuesday night, and will be here until Thursday morning. (Allen is pictured on left with Nevels on right.) Having recruits in for a mid-week visit is […]

Disappearing act (updated: Joaquim speaks)

By Brian McInnis on March 22, 2013

Well, we’ve had a couple of days to digest Hawaii’s 69-65 season-ending loss to Air Force in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Here’s the short list of things the game could be remembered most for: A) Air Force bombing 15 3s in 31 attempts without its best player B) 12th man Michael Harper helping spark a 19-0 first-half run that put UH up three at halftime C) Vander Joaquim ending his career by storming out of the Stan Sheriff Center with […]

CIT still up in the air

By Brian McInnis on March 16, 2013

Let’s assume for a moment that the Hawaii athletics administration is willing to put up the $35,000 base fee for the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, plus whatever additional ticket and operational costs UH has to front, which might come out to about another $20K. As of Saturday night, there’s a chance Hawaii could score a berth to the 32-team CIT. Take a moment to appreciate how unlikely this seemed on the heels of the demoralizing 71-60 loss to UC Irvine in […]

Tavita dislocates finger // Big West scenarios // Kapiolani Hospital team visit

By Brian McInnis on March 4, 2013

Adding injury to insult, Hawaii point guard Jace Tavita suffered a dislocated left pinkie finger in UH’s 64-61 loss to Cal Poly on Saturday’s senior night. He played the last 10-15 minutes of the game with it, UH coach Gib Arnold said. Unlike Brandon Spearman’s ankle sprain, the team doesn’t believe it to be a serious setback, though. Tavita is set to have a minor surgery on Tuesday to re-align his finger, after which Arnold hopes he’ll be good to […]

End of the Rainbow

By Brian McInnis on February 13, 2013

Well, it’s happened. The University of Hawaii and athletic director Ben Jay announced an official shift in nickname for it’s men’s sports teams from “Rainbows,” “Rainbow Warriors” and “Warriors” from sport to sport to just “Warriors” for all its men’s teams, effective July 1. UH women’s teams will remain known as “Rainbow Wahine.” You can read the Star-Advertiser’s breaking news story on it written by Billy Hull here. There’s also the scoop Dave Reardon had about the impending move in […]

Four for the road

By Brian McInnis on January 22, 2013

Saying the season of the Hawaii men’s basketball team hinges on the next four games, all on the road, would be a little melodramatic. Remember, the Big West is a one-bid league to the NCAA Tournament and whichever team puts it all together in mid-March will be the one to go dancing. But when it comes to some of the alternate tournaments — as well as long-term coaching and program perception consequences — picking up wins right now absolutely makes […]
