Hawaii men’s, beach volleyball: Warriors stay No. 1, SandBows up to No. 5
The freshly crowned Big West champion Hawaii men’s volleyball team remained at No. 1 in the post-conference tournament AVCA poll today.
#AVCA Top-15 (April 22):
1. Hawai'i
2. Long Beach State
3. Pepperdine
4. Southern California
5. UC Santa Barbara
6. Lewis
7. UCLA
8. UC Irvine
9. Loyola-Chicago
10. Stanford
11. BYU
12. CSUN
T-13. Concordia Irvine
T-13. Princeton
T-15. Grand Canyon
T-15. Purdue Fort Wayne— AVCA (@AVCAVolleyball) April 22, 2019
There was no poll last week. Likely the Warriors would have traded places with the 49ers at No. 1 after the two losses at LBSU.
Today’s poll has Hawaii with 11 first-place votes and Long Beach State with five.
Pepperdine up to No. 3 and USC 4. UCSB drops to 5.
+++++
.
Hawaii beach volleyball back up to five, trading places with Pepperdine.
Top 4 stay the same: UCLA unanimous No. 1 followed by USC, Florida State and LSU
Cal Poly down a spot to 8 and Long Beach State down two spots to 12.
I am surprised that Hawaii was voted #1 even though LBSU won 2 of 3 of their matches. The 5 who voted for LBSU probably looked at it that way. Those who voted for UH either tried to match their votes to the NCAA seeding or used the “who won last” logic, and crediting UH for demolishing UCI in 3 while LBSU took 4 sets to beat UCSB. Anyway, UH and LBSU are evenly matched, and if they face off for a fourth and final time this season, the tragedy in this sporting drama is that both teams won’t play on a true neutral court for the national championship.
Cindy…..any news on ticket allotment for UH?
I wonder what the UH single-match record is for most kills without an error. Stijn had 25 the other night, and was 18-0-24 versus McKendree. Couldn’t find reliable stats at NCAA or in UH’s record book. I agree that Stijn should be BWPOW and NPOW, given his performance against LBSU. He and Joe are UH’s best shot at NPOY, given that Rado has cooled off in the three matches with the Beach. The NPOY award will be announced before UH’s next match, so there is nothing more that UH’s players can do to impress the voters.
Are hosting institutions not required to hold a certain number of tickets for participating schools? It would seem that a # of seats would be saved for traveling teams and then released prior to the tournament.
2,4. Per last year’s championship host operations manual: “Team Allocations. Each participating institution is guaranteed a minimum of 100 tickets, of which at least 75 must be courtside (defined as floor level, between the end lines of the volleyball court, beginning with row one). The committee may adjust these allocations if necessary to equitably address specific facility seating situations as they arise.” This year’s manual is not yet available online.
See page 68 of: http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2018NCMVB_Host_Operations_Manual_20180201.pdf
2. nope haven’t heard anything about tickets
3. good question. all UH lists is best hitting percentage. 1.000 by Malia La Barre 11-0-11
4. my understanding is it is the NCAA that does the ticket allotment not the host institution.
One suggestion: contact Lewis, USC or Pepperdine to see if they have tickets available. Whenever those are released in case Hawaii has run out.
Sand Bows up to #5 and Cal Poly down to #8 should help UH get the #1 seed which would mean Cal Poly would have to play the Beach on Friday.
4,6. Interesting article on women’s volleyball final four allotment. Teams get 200 tickets each, but as the article mentions, most go to family and friends of the players. In addition to Cindy’s suggestion, you may want to check out re-seller sites.

7. see the main box and headline.
Not a fan of our current format which where we update in the main box and not on the thread
Maybe it should not be a surprise that UH is ranked #1. UH does not have a bad loss. UH did lose two 5 set matches to LBSU but LBSU got swept by USC earlier in the year so that could have dropped LBSU’s RPI a little.
I already called Pepperdine ticket office this morning. They are only distributing tickets to players for their families. Just a handful of tickets priced from $400 -$700 right now on StubHub. It’s going to be a hot ticket.
10. the poll has nothing to do with RPI. It’s 16 coaches voting. Points fall where they fall.
Do believe the NCAA selection committee took the
BTW no POW for Big West this week.
Believe there is one for the AVCA. Van Tilburg will be nominated.
He is currently on the Sports Animals
11. it was just a suggestion to try other schools.
Some have told me that they had their names on Long Beach State’s wait list and have been able to purchase tickets today.
Also, you can now preorder BigWest champions shirts
