After commanding sweeps of UC Riverside earlier this week, Hawaii and UC Davis meet today to close the opening weekend of the Big West women’s volleyball season. The Rainbow Wahine (4-5, 1-0 Big West) enter today’s 4 p.m. match at University Credit Union Center with a 15-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Aggies (5-7, 1-0), but were tested in two wins in 2019. UH rallied past UC Davis in five sets (22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-12) in a […]
The Hawaii women’s volleyball program was insulted about being sent to Nebraska and took it out on the hosts. On this date in 2002, Lily Kahumoku and Kim Willoughby had 25 kills each and the Rainbow Wahine beat the Cornhuskers 30-25, 25-30, 30-27, 30-21 to advance to the Final Four at New Orleans. Hawaii was seeded sixth while Nebraska was seeded third. Hawaii ended Nebraska’s 63-match home winning streak. The run was short lived, however, as UH got swept by […]
Aloha ball will have to wait another year. Volleyball coach Charlie Wade confirmed his four seniors — including two-time All-American Rado Parapunov — will return for the 2021 season. It was presumed their eligibility had ended in March when the NCAA canceled the remainder of the spring-sport seasons because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But later that month, the NCAA’s Division I Council approved a measure providing spring-sport players “an additional season of competition and an extension of their period of […]

It is the second year in a row Parapunov has reached the recognition. In the recently abbreviated season, Parapunov averaged 4.47 kills and 5.28 points per set. Earlier, he was named the Big West’s Player of the Year. Worsley averaged 2.1 digs per set. For the first time since 2003, Hawaii men’s volleyball has a conference player of the year — and the Rainbow Warriors did it without playing a single conference match in 2020. Senior opposite Rado Parapunov earned top honors from the Big West Conference in leading the Rainbow Warriors to a 15-1 record and a No. 2 ranking before the season was prematurely shut down due to the coronavirus threat. UH’s only conference player of the year until today was Costas Theocharidis […]
UH’s spring-sport senior athletes will get a do-over thanks to an NCAA ruling. The Division I Council today approved a measure that will provide spring-sport players an “additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility,” the NCAA announced today on its website. The ruling was made in response to spring-sport athletes whose seasons were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision essentially freezes each athlete’s current class standing, meaning a senior this year will be […]

The Warriors returned today. The “Aunties” met them at the airport so they had several lei for the bus ride back to campus. Think they’re still all in shock. Got to speak with the four seniors and Coach Wade. All very gracious in their interviews. Here are video interviews with the four seniors — Patrick Gasman, Rado Parapunov, Colton Cowell, and James Anastassiades — as well as Wade. The four players expressed varying degrees of openness to a return, depending on […]
