This team has talent. You can tell though that they haven’t played a season together. So far so good

  8. z August 30, 2019 7:35 pm

    Wow no need libero.

  9. T103 August 30, 2019 7:36 pm

So weird not seeing familiar faces on the court, but this is awesome! Passing is a little shaky in that first set mid-way but we got talent! They just gottah gel together. surprise they haven’t played a libero in the 1st set and even this 2nd set. Go wahines!

  10. Cindy Luis August 30, 2019 7:41 pm

    9. No surprise about no libero. mentioned they did that last Friday in the scrimmage.

  11. Beauston August 30, 2019 7:41 pm

Someone’s got to check that score, before TO I thought Wahine had 4 points.

  12. z August 30, 2019 7:51 pm

    Too many errors.

  13. T103 August 30, 2019 7:55 pm

shucks sorry Cindy, haven’t been able to keep up with the pre-season talk, been busy, so it surprised me that they weren’t/hadn’t used libber, more power to us hehe. We gottah steady our passing cuz we are hurting! But blocking is doing well right now

  20. warriorwahine August 30, 2019 9:14 pm

well played robyn..bring in the ‘working’ wahine.

    Amazing.

  22. Big Island Volleyball Fan August 30, 2019 9:32 pm

Wouldn’t be surprised if UH will trade ranking with Cal Poly by Monday where UH will be ranked in the top 25 and Cal Poly will fall out. Last year San Diego defeated Cal Poly in the first round of the playoffs when they played without Torrey van Winden. If she’s still out, UH will be on top.

  23. warriorwahine August 30, 2019 9:51 pm

‘dont even worry about it’ – jolie

  24. Lloyd August 30, 2019 9:57 pm

Still up here from D.C. and im clapping by myself this morning. (4am) . Amazing players.

  25. Astroboy August 30, 2019 10:03 pm

I don’t know. In those middle matches I thought we were seriously lacking in back row defense. I can’t help but notice that putting in Rika and Kyra suddenly made this work a lot better.

  26. H-Man August 30, 2019 10:22 pm

Yeah, coach Robyn still has to figure out the pieces. She used a lot of combinations tonight. Van Sickle was a huge surprise. Wow, she can sky for someone maybe 5-8 or 5-9. A great win for first match.

  27. blunite August 30, 2019 10:39 pm

The team was a pleasant surprise tonight; however,

    – More offense from the middles would improve the hitting percentages for the OHs.
    – San Diego did not bother to double the UH middles in the final sets.
    – That Rasmussen was effective despite a double block all night was impressive.
    – Skyler Williams put up an effective block.
    – Too many missed serves. Work on those serves!

  28. darkfire35 August 30, 2019 10:52 pm

Wow, almost yelled myself hoarse tonight. Talk about being on the edge of my seat for the 5th. Agree that having the libero in there allows the hitters to get into position. What a difference Kyra made in that last match!
Great spread in the paper today, Cindy! You really put a lot of work into the articles, graphics and layouts. Loved the “laboratory” terms you used like “immersion oil” and “achromatic objective lenses”. The whole “under the microscope” theme worked really well! It was one of your better Wahine volleyball previews. Mahalo nui loa! GO BOWS!

  29. Bleachercoach August 30, 2019 10:52 pm

This team is loaded with talent. I love the way Coach Rob used her substitutions. The “No Libero” was a surprise and is a great option to have when you have athletes that can play all 6 rotations.
It did show especially in the 2nd and 3rd sets. BVS, Jolie, Hanna, and Riley had to do alot of passing, blocking, and hitting at the same time which could have worn them down a bit affecting them. I feel Okino and Hanawahine was brought in at very crucial times. Those Libero’s made huge plays and contributed much in the win even with very small roles.
I knew about BVS and Jolie’s athleticism but I am in awe of what Hanna and the rest of the Freshmen Class will become in their tenure here.
I could definitely see Hanna’s experience in international play. Playing in front of a huge cheering crowd with a different culture is really new to her, but you just can tell that in the 4th and 5th set that she possess that swagger and calculated confidence that could possibly take over a match just like Jolie R. Hanna is the Real Deal….Great nite to be a 🌈 RAINBOWS
I think we need to make our MBS more active at the net. Our blocking was lacking but they managed to get more ROOFS and Crucial Touches during the end of the match
Overall, this team makes me very happy and I predict big accomplishments from them this year and the next couple of years!
What a wonderful way to start the 2019 season!!!!!

  30. Cindy Luis August 30, 2019 11:16 pm

    a couple of comments.
Agree they need more of a middle attack but when you have a back row setter all the time it isn’t the easiest thing to do to set the middle.
UH’s middles: Igiede was 4-2-7 in 2 sets, Westerberg 3-0-7 in three, Williams 5-1-14 in five.
Thought UH did a good job on Wiblin (7-5-23). She’s 6-2, and got soloed by Van Sickle, generously listed at 5-9.
The one thing that USD went away from that was successful was their setter attacking. Newsome was 8-1-13. No attacks in Set 5, 0-1-1 in Set 4.

  31. Cindy Luis August 30, 2019 11:20 pm

    28. thanks. all i did was write and give some input on the design elements. Most of the credit goes to our graphic guru Martha Hernandez.
    29. Not sure about the ‘lack of blocking’ comment. UH had a 15-5 edge, plus a lot of touches that allowed their offense to set up and make plays.

  32. Connor August 31, 2019 6:43 am

I had understood that Choy and Rasmussen had devastating hard jump serves. Did not see that last night. Is this what we can expect?

  33. Bleachercoach August 31, 2019 8:18 am

31…wow! I didn’t realized we had that many blocks (15) my bad!

  34. islandman August 31, 2019 8:32 am

I don’t see Hanawahine in the “Individual” listing in the UH website
Box Score but she is listed in the 5th set Play- by -Play.
Also, Igiede,Skyler and Choy are listed as playing in only 1 set,
Priest and Turner not listed for San Diego.
Newspaper has Wagoner with 7 sets played.
UH site box score has 7 BA for San Diego but the newspaper has 8 and one solo block.
UH site has 5 SA’s and 14 SE’s but the newspaper has 6 SA and 15 SE’s for UH.

  35. H-Man August 31, 2019 8:49 am

Watching the replay this morning and only just noticed Van Sickle’s defensive play. She is great.

  36. islandman August 31, 2019 9:38 am

    34. Kara of UH said that the NCAA changed scoring programs this season and that there are many glitches in it.

  37. rabbit ears August 31, 2019 9:38 am

wow the freshman wahines, very impressive. I think Hellvig is a future All American. Seems like she got tired in set three and then caught her second wind in sets 4 and 5. Wagoner is going to be solid also. I can now see why Van Sickle is starting. Sklyer and the freshmen middles did good. Norene’s sets were a bit erratic at the start but she settled in. Bailey Choy is such a pure setter.

  38. Cindy Luis August 31, 2019 11:06 am

    32. it’s the first match. give them time. They also may have been instructed how and where to serve by the bench.
    34. the box we used was the one that UH handed out as ‘official. after the match. but when I left the arena, the SID was still trying to get the program to work right. so there may be some differences. I saw some errors in the ‘official’ one such as people playing in sets when they hadn’t.
There also could be errors when the clerk typed it in quickly to make our deadline. I will let the desk know and perhaps it can be corrected online.
thank you for pointing it out.

  39. islandman August 31, 2019 11:31 am

    38. The newspaper box score appears to be more correct than the UH website box score, except for Riley playing in 7 sets and Kyra in 0.
The errors in 34. were mostly on the UH website.

  40. Cindy Luis August 31, 2019 4:22 pm
