If Wahine-KSU play Sunday closed to public; Top 25 scores

From UH:
A decision on the potential women’s volleyball match between Hawaii and Kansas State will not be made until after Hurricane Lane’s impact on Oahu has been assessed.

If the decision is made to play the Sunday match, it will be closed to the public due the short time frame and unknown factors of the storm hinders ability to assemble the necessary staff to ensure public safety for a large group. We are working on having a single-camera video stream link, radio, and livestats available for fans to follow the match online.

Remedies for fans who purchased tickets to the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Classic are:

WVB Season Ticket Holders:
· For any games that were cancelled this week, the UH Athletics Dept will honor those tickets in exchange for any ticketed 2018-19 UH-Sponsored regular-season home game including Football, Women’s or Men’s Volleyball, Men’s or Women’s Basketball or Baseball. Tickets can be exchanged at the UH Ticket Office when single game tickets go on sale for the respective sports. Seating may be in select areas. Other restrictions may apply.

WVB Mini-Pack Purchasers:
· Mini-Pack purchasers may exchange their tickets at the UH Ticket Office for any other 2018 wvb regular-season home match

WVB Single Game Purchasers:
· Tickets can be exchanged at the UH Ticket Office for another home match during the current 2018 WVB regular season
· Refunds or exchanges will be available at the box office beginning Monday or when the UH-Manoa campus re-opens for business. Deadline to receive a refund for single game purchases is Friday, Sept. 14

Please check HawaiiAthletics.com for further game and ticket information.

Oh boy, hurricane done, and no rain yet here the windward side.. not a fan of this decision by UH.

  2. Brandon August 24, 2018 5:12 pm

That is totally unfair to fans. If it’s safe to play, it’s safe for fans to support our team.

  3. Warriorfan August 24, 2018 5:16 pm

Think 44-45 hours until match time on Sunday should be enough time to set something up to be open to the public , it’s not like Uh hasn’t held matches in the SSC during heavy thunderstorms before.
If anything they should play a match tomorrow (and if thats closed to the public I would understand) but sunday,No.

what a headache Lane has been.

  4. Brandon August 24, 2018 5:19 pm

I agree. If safe play a match tomorrow. No public. But there is more than enough time to get a crew for Sunday.

  5. Brandon August 24, 2018 5:22 pm

Is there any chance a Saturday game is played if the storm doesn’t hit as hard as predicted?

  6. Reggie August 24, 2018 5:33 pm

Season ticket holders should have the option of a full refund for the matches missed this weekend. We paid to watch Wahine Volleyball, not another UH sport.

  7. Astroboy August 24, 2018 6:04 pm

As a season ticket holder, I have zero interest in any of the other sports tickets being offered in exchange. Couldn’t they offer some food vouchers, or H-Zone discounts??

  8. H-Man August 24, 2018 6:10 pm

    From the Hawaii Athletics website:

“If the decision is made to play the Sunday match, it will be CLOSED to the public as the short time frame and unknown factors of the storm hinders ability to assemble the necessary staff to ensure public safety for a large group. We are working on having a single-camera video stream link, radio, and livestats available for fans to follow the match online.”

  9. Rodney Okita August 24, 2018 6:15 pm

I would be against playing on Saturday but I cant see see anything wrong on Sunday! I would think that the most fans would turn just to enjoy an event after all the stress caused by Lane!!

  10. Rodney Okita August 24, 2018 6:17 pm

opps! that most fans would turn out

  11. Brandon Yoshikawa August 24, 2018 6:27 pm

What about the KSU parents who flew all the way here to watch their kids play. That is insanely unfair to them. Let us watch UH. This is going to ruin a lot of things in the near future imo

  12. Cindy Luis August 24, 2018 6:44 pm

    1 et all
They had to make a decision and they’re going to go with this.
Perhaps not the best but no one knows how much rain there will be over the weekend.
They said Wednesday there would be no match on Friday or Saturday.
    6. perhaps you can suggest that to UH
    7. isn’t that what I posted?
    10. Don’t know how many KSU fans came and or stayed. Team had the option to leave and didn’t. I hardly think that this ruins anything for the future. Not like anyone had control over the weather. Snow and storms have cancelled matches on the mainland before.

  13. Brandon Yoshikawa August 24, 2018 6:47 pm

Canceling a match is different than having one and not letting anyone watch. I’ve never heard of this happening before

  14. Cindy Luis August 24, 2018 6:53 pm

    13. It is the compromise they came up with. And it still may not happen.

  15. Reggie August 24, 2018 7:01 pm

I hope other Wahine Volleyball season ticket holders will call UH on Monday and let them know that not allowing us the option of a full refund for the cancelled matches this week is unacceptable.

  17. Warriorfan August 24, 2018 7:19 pm

R15 agreed just terrible decision making, what if there is no heavy rain tomorrow what will the excuse be? Sunday Lane will be a memory..

  18. H-Man August 24, 2018 7:40 pm

Was this decision made by the AD or SSC Arena Manager? 48 hours to assemble a staff not enough time? The staff already was staged for matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

  19. darkfire35 August 24, 2018 7:49 pm

Even with everything that’s going on, I’d still like to say Mahalo Nui Loa Cindy for all your updates…good or bad. It is very much appreciated!
    GO BOWS!

  20. George Kaeo August 24, 2018 8:43 pm

yep agree with the masses watch live match at ssc sunday vice live stream. bring kahoohanhano back. lets go bows!

  21. Warrior Dave August 24, 2018 9:23 pm

All of us season ticket holders bought seats to support the team. You don’t know how bad the weather will be on Saturday and Sunday although the weather is nice right now. Can’t you “Whiners” just think of it as a donation instead of demand a cash refund? Why don’t you donate this weeks tickets to Boys and Girls Club and take a tax deduction for 2018.

  22. Bleachercoach August 24, 2018 9:41 pm

Getting away from the topic, I thought that #7 Florida was pretty efficient vs #2 Nebraska inning in 4…Nebraska is young and very good but I was so impressed with Florida’s size and future with Freshman phenom Thayer Hall (20Kills) She will be playing in the Olympics soon from what I saw. Okay… now I am ready for some Hawaii Volleyball this coming week….Lets Go Bows

  23. Reggie August 24, 2018 9:46 pm

Warrior Dave, donation on top of the mandatory seat donation we are already paying? I bought and have been buying season tickets for the past 28 years because I enjoy volleyball. Over the years, I have donated enough to support the Wahine program. I paid for matches that was not available for me to see this weekend, I want my money back.

  24. Warriorfan August 24, 2018 10:10 pm

R22 I think you should get a refund

Anyway the forecast says not much rain for oahu saturday why not play a match saturday night?
Would help the wahine to beat ksu twice and hopefully the wildcats have a nice season and become a top 50 team. The more top 50 wins you have the better in the eyes of the ncaa committee.

  25. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2018 12:19 am

    “Unknown factors of the storm”?

If the storm were still so unpredictable the City wouldn’t have decided earlier this evening to close the shelters at noon tomorrow and send everyone home.

If the people most responsible for ensuring public safety are confident the danger will have passed by mid-day Saturday, how is it that UH can’t arrange to staff the SSC for a volleyball match late in the day on Sunday, more than 24 hours later? Fairly or not, the message that sends to fans isn’t “we care about your safety”. It’s “you don’t matter enough to us to justify the extra work we would have to do to let you in.”

  26. Kahuna August 25, 2018 4:30 am

UH lost out on money on not playing the tournament so instead of doing the right thing and playing or give us refund, they are trying to “keep our money”.

No this is not a donation! Donations are solicited. This is flat out keeping our money.

UH will lose a lot of goodwill if they don’t do the right thing. I know this is troubled times but character(which Matlin is supposed to have) is to do the right thing and fully refund our money or do your darnedest to put on a live match for your fans.

  27. pakipark August 25, 2018 4:51 am

Shucks, Wahine Volleyball not open to the public? After having Thursday AND Friday off, probably not enough workers for Sunday.

  28. IgnacioSaid August 25, 2018 4:53 am

I have a lot of experience involving the University and know what huge preparation is needed to set up events. I can see the concerns of officials , but believe the SSC could be ready (Saturday & Sunday) for WVB (2) matches with it being televised. Bottom line— KANSAS State should be allowed to play , since they travelled and waited out the storm! Matlin can make comments , but , he’s in Colorado. Set up the match(s) and the PEOPLE WILL COME!!!! Go Bows

  29. Raider Dogs August 25, 2018 7:01 am

Easy solution if the arena cannot be manned make the seating free take donations at the gate to give to a charity like Ronald McDonald house, Salvation Army or Foodbank. No concessions free parking. At least the wahines have a crowd to see them play. Way better than an empty Stanley plus you make some friends and help a good cause, I thought Matlin was a thinker out of the box apparently his box must be made of cardboard.

  30. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2018 7:28 am

TheBus will be back in full service this afternoon. City parks will reopen tomorrow. The ZOO will reopen tomorrow, for heaven’s sake. You would think UH could find a way to open the SSC.

  31. Cindy Luis August 25, 2018 7:43 am

29 I like your suggestion They had opened arena last Friday for scrimmage that was free
At 730 am Saturday my thoughts
AD made the decision based on info available They still want people to stay off the roads
If you have spectrum watch channel 121
Pay attention to the radar and rain forecast Heavy rains out there Lane is currently No 4 in US history for rainfall total and it’s not done The associated rains predicted through Sunday Heavy wind gusts
    UH campus still closed
Flash flood warning still in affect
    Pali closed Kailua bound
Bottom line is decision made with safety in mind
If the refund choices not acceptable then contact UH with preferences
    Stay dry and safe gang

  32. Setaone August 25, 2018 7:48 am

Does the match count if it isn’t open to the public?

  33. Warriorfan August 25, 2018 8:21 am

i just don’t think the rain will be that bad here on oahu and they should play a match tonight, and certainly open it to the public for tomorrow’s match.

  34. Reggie August 25, 2018 8:24 am

It seems as though Matlin and the athletic department at the University of Hawaii are the ones not paying attention to the latest forecasts and it’s disappointing that you are defending their bad judgement, Cindy.

A closing the match to people with tickets and using weather conditions as an excuse when projections show that the storm is not kind to have any significant impact to Honolulu is not in the best interest of the Wahine Volleyball program or the athletic department of the University of Hawaii.

  35. Tomorrow’s Never Promise August 25, 2018 8:26 am

Aloha All you Hawaii fans!!!! I am very upset with the decision being made quickly on not allowing the public to watch. I believe they acted too quick and they are probably not going to regret it but shows us they don’t care. I attempted to reach out to Aven Lee via email but it brought me back a message saying out of office and will reply when she gets back as she is limited to her email. I also emailed Mr. Matlin and he may not respond but I attempted to. If I were you all I would email them all as I believe as a Division 1 school it’s sad what they decided as they should have everything in order and ready to go. I guest they don’t have there crap together it’s very saddening. We have a lot of time to put a game on and yet they say no. Unbelievable… Go bows

  36. Warriorfan August 25, 2018 8:40 am

The disappointing thing is tuesday/wednesday projections had Lane clearing on Oahu by saturday and sunday which is coming true.
KSU stayed because of those projections so UH should have stuck with the saturday/sunday matches plan and only cancelled at last minute if those orojections were off.

  37. Warriorfan August 25, 2018 8:48 am

    Projections*^

  38. H-Man August 25, 2018 9:05 am

I’m still waiting for rain in Ewa Beach to water my yard. Rain to make driving dangerous? Try driving on H1 when the state closes three lanes to perform maintenance or upgrades. Now that is really treacherous driving.

  39. Brandon Yoshikawa August 25, 2018 10:23 am

Yeah this is completely poor planning by UH. I don’t know why they made such a hasty descision to cancel these matches.

  40. Big Island volleyball fan August 25, 2018 10:30 am

I share all the volleyball fans’ disappointments but for a different reason. Right now I am in San Luis Obispo, CA, and I could have watched the matches LIVE online which I couldn’t back on the Big Island. That cut my viewing opportunities by one third as I’ll be back in Hawaii by mid-September. I guess we have to be grateful that our living abodes are not flooded or burnt down. Now that would have been a true disaster.

  41. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2018 11:27 am

The tropical storm warning for Oahu was cancelled at 11:00 a.m. What’s left of Lane is headed away from the island, moving westward at 7 mph. We’ll have some showers this afternoon and overnight but that should be about it. Unless the SSC has sprung a leak the only genuine obstacle to opening a Sunday late afternoon or evening match to the public appears to be an unwillingness to tell the staff to come to work tomorrow.

  42. Row13 August 25, 2018 11:29 am

K-State announced it will play Wahine Saturday night (closed to public) and Sunday 2 pm (open to public). No word yet on UH website.

    http://www.kstatesports.com/news/2018/8/25/volleyball-cats-to-open-season-saturday-night-at-hawaii.aspx

  43. Warriorfan August 25, 2018 11:57 am

Good decision, hope the wahine are ready need these two wins.
matlin should have stayed behind during this hurricane instead of traveling witj the football team.

  44. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2018 12:07 pm

    41. Hooray! If true UH has made a good call. Mahalo and let’s get the season going!

  45. FitTrainer August 25, 2018 12:14 pm

    21. Agreed, Thayer Hall is looking really good. AVCA Freshman of the Year?

  46. Cindy Luis August 25, 2018 12:43 pm

    http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=46526
    new thread up with information

    20. it was Matlin’s decision to make. wouldn’t have been Moniz-Ka’ohanohano’s.
    41. UH is putting something out in a bit
    What K-State posted is true.
and to respond I don’t think I was defending the decision. Was just giving facts that were part of the decision making process.
It wasn’t too long ago that flash flooding from Manoa came through campus and ruined offices both upper and lower campus.
and to say Matlin should have stayed behind instead of going to football? He was given up-to-date info and it wouldn’t have mattered where he was at.
will update with ticket info when I get it from UH
