Rainbow Wahine close homestand against UC Riverside
The Rainbow Wahine volleyball team closes the sixth week of conference play looking to remain tied atop the Big West standings and undefeated against UC Riverside.
UH enters tonight’s match at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center at 28-0 in the all-time series with the Highlanders and opened conference play this season with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 win in its conference opener on Sept. 23 Riverside, Calif.
That started an eight-match winning streak that ended with a loss at UC Santa Barbara last week. The Gauchos improved to 11-1 in Big West play by rallying past UC Irvine for a five-set win on Friday and a 25-16, 23-25, 25-12, 25-18 win today at UC San Diego.
UH will try to keep pace a night after turning in a balanced performance in Friday’s sweep of UC Davis with fans back in the arena for the first time this season. Setter Kate Lang ran a balanced attack and UH’s five primary attackers ranged between 12 and seven kills with Brooke Van Sickle leading the way in a .333 hitting performance.
UC Riverside (5-16, 1-10) picked up its lone Big West win at Long Beach State on Oct. 22 and was swept by UC Davis on Tuesday before making the trip to Hawaii.

>> Van Sickle goes cross court to end the run. After a serve into the net, Van Sickle scores again and a block by Williams and Leoniak gives UH set point. Williams sends a bump set to Van Sickle for her sixth kill and UH wins the set 25-19.
Riverside is 1-10 in conference and 5-16 overall, yet they’re giving the Wahine a hard time. Just plain sloppy with those tip shots. Serve-receive again a problem. A good team would eat up the Wahine tonight.
