    1. Thank you, but on Android.

  3. vballfan September 28, 2019 10:59 am

Robyn was quoted with very honest assessment of the team (including coaches, too?): Long road trip, people getting under each other’s skin. I can imagine how it must be. Not easy, but team and coaches better work on emotional intelligence or else this kind of stuff will eat away at the cohesiveness of the team. It’s not just about skills.

  4. Andrew September 28, 2019 11:46 am

With Jolie being out it has given the opportunity for other players to step up their play to make up for the loss especially on offense. When it gets to post season, not everyone is going to be on their game 100% of the team so it’s good to have others ready to to step up when it’s needed

  5. WaveRipper September 28, 2019 1:46 pm

Gonna be a long, fun conference season ….. 1 W down, 15 matches to go!

    Go Bows!

  6. darkfire35 September 28, 2019 2:42 pm

    3. Agreed. It’s often an overlooked symptom of travel. Even the best of friends can get under each other’s skin affecting one’s motivation for playing a good game, focusing at the task at hand or the assignments required. Talent does not beget a winning team. As Robyn said before, they are very young, inexperienced and still have to learn to gel with each other. We’re only 5 weeks into the season…we have to give them a chance to grow. Success will not happen overnight.
So, in the meantime, we need to support them all we can, however we can! GO BOWS!!!

    3. she had told me the same thing but didn’t use it in the story other than to say it’s a long road trip.

  9. Kazu September 28, 2019 3:24 pm

Wahine needs to be tough and focused, CSUN is no push over.

  10. shar September 28, 2019 4:21 pm

I think we should accept that it IS a long road trip and move on. It is of no use to discuss what is happening. In any workplace, we all do not have to be best friends but we need to get the job done. We should give them the space to get the work done without rumors and guesses as to what is happening. Let the players play and let the coaches coach.

  11. darkfire35 September 28, 2019 4:31 pm

Anyone else having a problem watching game on BigWestTV?

  12. Cindy Luis September 28, 2019 4:36 pm

    10. i don’t think too much should be read into it. Coach being honest in it being a long road trip and they’ve spent a lot of time together. A group that isn’t used to being together this much. Different being on the road instead of just seeing each other at home for practices, weight room, maybe some classes.

  13. shar September 28, 2019 4:40 pm

    12. I agree. My comment was more preemptive

  14. Kazu September 28, 2019 5:54 pm

UCSB and Cal Poly hard to beat. Both 3-0 in conference.

  16. HawaiiMongoose September 28, 2019 6:16 pm

Whew, that was a tough one. Glad the ladies are coming home and will have a chance to rest and recharge. Hopefully Jolie’s rehab is going well and she can rejoin the team soon.

  17. RainbowWahineFan15 September 28, 2019 6:31 pm

I like the emergence of Hanna Hellvig during this time of Jolie Rasmussen’s absence from the team. Her International experience is really paying dividends for the team. Overall, two conference wins without it’s leader and Hawai’i is off to a good start. I also like how this team stepped when it really mattered during those third and fourth sets. Not sure if it’s being on the road for soo long, but Hawai’i kind of took it’s foot off the pedal in that second set, kind of similar to the LBSU match. Otherwise, I’d say a great first road trip for the Wahine’s this season. Go Bows!

  18. Kauaiboy September 28, 2019 6:32 pm

Thank lord this road trip is over with, they definitely were not at their best the last 2 matches. They looked like old Hawaii teams, no energy and spirit… playing down to the competition. Although CSUN is much improved this year and could easily be 2-0 instead of 0-2.

  19. shar September 28, 2019 7:26 pm

I wish there was a “like” button. Hopefully Jolie has rehabbed and will soon be back to her old self. But, she could easily reinjure herself so I hope she fully heals and doesn’t come back too early.

  20. WaveRipper September 28, 2019 7:29 pm

Make that 2 down, 14 to go ….. After two consecutive dreary seasons, the fun is back in Na Wahine volleyball.

    Go Bows!

  21. tongo September 28, 2019 7:57 pm

Just back from the match. It was intense and could have easily gone to 5th tie breaker – but fortunately we closed it in the 4th set. Hanna looked really tired and perhaps a little hurt in her left hand as she was rubbing it. Riley had a mini breakout match that we all have been waiting for. The passing improved significantly in the 4th set making our middle attack viable again, just in time to save the day. Ross was heroic and I loved watching her go all out with great hits and even better digs to cover herself.

IMHO, RAM critique of the players was kind of over the top especially in the 3rd set, sapping energy out of the players. RAM settled down in the 4th set and returned to coaching – not criticizing.

  22. Cindy Luis September 28, 2019 8:05 pm

    20. wouldn’t call them dreary seasons. Made the NCAA tournament both times.
finished second in the Big West both years.
Had 2 losses in conference both years.
the biggest difference is they’ve won 3 five setters this year and have defeated three ranked teams.
At this point last season, they had dropped two five setters, lost to No. 12 Oregon twice
At this point in 2017, they had lost three five setters and lost to three ranked teams.

  23. darkfire35 September 28, 2019 8:26 pm

    21. If what you said is true, I hope RAM won’t wait 30 years before mellowing out and coaching like Shoji did. At least, that’s what I heard. If I’m wrong, I deeply apologize. But I’ve been in that position in sports before where sometimes the coach crosses the line between personal criticism and coaching. It is demoralizing not only to the person it is directed to, but others around them. But, I hope these girls have thick skin and will pull up their boot straps and continue on learning from their mistakes and try to get better.
    GO BOWS!!!

  24. Shar September 28, 2019 9:15 pm

Comparing the two coaches is unfair. The comparison is one at the end of a successful career while the other is beginning. Sometimes, when hearing…”the last time we beat Washington…” “…the last time we started the season (whatever it was) and zero…it seems we are rewriting history. This is not to take away from the most fabulous women VB coach but Coach Robyn has been doing well. They are different. We have an amazing beginning of a season..we should rejoice rather than nitpick.

  25. Andy September 28, 2019 9:28 pm

    21. Yes – at LBSU during one timeout Robyn was so aggressive it was uncomfortable to watch. She wasn’t so much yelling at Hanna as she looked like she was actually trying to stare her down. Maybe it worked that night, but I can see it growing old.

  26. WaveRipper September 28, 2019 10:07 pm

    22. Some see the glass as half-full for the last 2 seasons. I saw it as half-empty, with what seemed like every few weeks another dreary record being set, such as RPI 100. (Some would say, that RPI could have been worst! I would say it could have been better.)

Guess I believe that once you start lowering Na Wahine standards — such as finishing second in the Big West — you start lowering everything else. Perhaps “dreary” is a poor word choice, but IMAO I call it as I felt it. Those 2 seasons were uncharacteristic of our beloved NCAA D1 volleyball tradition.

Long way to go yet, but so far it’s been a blessing (not a moment of dreariness) to watch the growth of the 2019 version of Team Rainbow Wahine!

  27. vballfan September 28, 2019 10:22 pm

    21. Could you hear players being “critiqued?”
    24. Agree. Cannot coach by intimidating. Players could walk …can only take it for so long….
I think Robyn has such high expectations for each player and believes in them so much that she sets high standards and if not met, she gets very upset…

Keeping trust that everything is and will work out.
Go Wahine, you are a great group.

  28. darkfire35 September 28, 2019 10:45 pm

    24. I agree with you wholeheartedly, I’m really not nit picking. The 2 coaches are apples and oranges, but the point is, you respond better to positive criticism vs negative. It also matters how you say it. In the heat of the moment, yelling “WHAT WAS THAT!!!! YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THAT”! doesn’t help as much as “Remember your training, focus, settle down.”
    GO BOWS!!!

  29. Kauaiboy September 29, 2019 12:00 am

Robyn is also their BIGGEST cheerleader, she is very emotional on the sidelines and when they are playing at a high level she lets them know by her reactions. I’ve loved watching this wahine team because of their spirit and love for the game… although they didn’t seem to be having much fun these last 2 matches…

  30. Sheila September 29, 2019 3:58 am

It is a tough battle if any team brings their A+ game and CSUN did it very well and made wahine fans, players & coaching staff very stressful. Both team and coaching staff are progressing very well along the learning curve and keep up the good work. Although two ugly road trip wins, congratulation for whole team for hanging on for wins!

Sounds like the PC crowd is astonished that Robyn would yell at her players when they make mistakes.

    Shame on her.

  34. jmy September 29, 2019 12:33 pm

    UW leads Stanford 2-1…another upset?

  35. Maverick September 29, 2019 12:56 pm

Big win by Washington over Stanford. Helps with UH’s RPI and solidifies UW’s top 25 RPI status, earning UH double bonus for its victory over the Huskies earlier this year (also good for when the committee decides who to seed–a true good win). Stanford not so invincible as some thought.

  36. WaveRipper September 29, 2019 2:28 pm

34/35. Who knows what to expect from the Huskies: dropping its Pac-12 opener in Pullman in 4 then beating the nation’s top-ranked team at 50-year-old Maples Pavilion in 4. (Stanford, which held the nation-best home winning streak at 37 until it lost to BYU, has now lost 2 consecutive matches at Maples! And there went that 26th consecutive match win streak over a Pac-12 opponent dating back to 2017!)

And who knows what to expect from UCLA, whose 2-0 start in the Pac-12 make the Bruins contenders and not pretenders to a NCAA tournament bid this year.

As mentioned by others, a W by Washington and UCLA will boost Hawaii’s RPI numbers.

And Baylor, soon to be the top-ranked team, stays undefeated after its road sweep over Kansas. (Baylor swept its 9th opponent in 11 matches, and it has now posted a 33-2 W-L set record during the 2019 season.) Of course Baylor’s win streak will only help Hawaii’s RPI even though Hawai’i was 1 of the 9 opponents who had the brooms come out in its face.

    31. No, winning “2 of 2 on Road often enough to Move Up (into Top Ten).” Not when those road kills are against unranked opponents. True, a lost by the Bows would almost certainly mean a drop in the rankings. But moving up is more of a meh — even when, as you state, there are Ls by teams ahead of you in the Top 25.

    Go Bows!

  37. nomu1001 September 29, 2019 3:07 pm

Just my thoughts on RAM. As a player, if I’m not doing my job or playing well, then I would rather have the coach being tough on me, rather than just hearing some words that dont get me motivated. Now, if the coach starts making things personal, that is wrong, period. If the coach loses focus and stops teaching, which is their job and responsibility, then that is a problem. Some conflict can be healthy, if it helps everyone to be open about how they feel, how they might think or see things. Each team member has to understand their role. Yes, long road trip. Rest, relax, chill. Successful road trip, who wouldnt be happy?

  38. vballfan September 29, 2019 3:50 pm

    37. Thank you. Well stated.

  39. Sheila September 29, 2019 4:31 pm

Washington’s big win over Stanford, could shuffle the positions of BYU, Marquette and Hawaii. Probably, Wahine could climb all the way to #9 tomorrow.
